Francesca Bianchi Libertine Neroli (Francesca Bianchi) 2022+ The Protagonist Giveaway

Francesca Bianchi Libertine Neroli

Libertine Neroli is the first fragrance from the Francesca Bianchi line devoted to a specific ingredient, with Unpoken Musk and Byzantine Amber following not long after. Far from what your first assumption might be, it’s not a simple rendition of the flower but a complex composition built around neroli as the central pillar – and as always with Francesca’s creations – with great longevity, body, and structure.

This creation draws inspiration from the vibrant settings of Italy’s social life and all the glorious places of the bygone eras: the carefree atmosphere of the Roman Dolce Vita, the sense of freedom of Wyler’s Roman Holiday, or the refined-yet-casual vibe of Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Inspiration for Francesca Bianchi Libertine Neroli

Francesca Bianchi Libertine Neroli, mood photo via the brand

Re-reading the inspiration behind it, and looking at the mood picture chosen by Francesca for Libertine Neroli, my mind wandered, thinking what fertile ground it would be for a very cinematic, deeply Italian video ad campaign. And in an imaginary world where one would have all the possible resources to accomplish this, one name came into my mind as the best cinematographer for her (for now) imaginary ad: Luca Bigazzi. One of Italy’s most acclaimed directors of photography, he is an award-winning genius with movies like La Grande Bellezza (2013), Youth (2015), and Sicilian Ghost Story (2017), to mention but a few. If one would translate the use of light into the olfactory realm in the same flawless manner that Bigazzi does on film, that would be Francesca. Intense, bright, blinding lights, juxtaposed by extreme darkness, edges blurred in a soft haze, an artistically idealized sense of time delivered with a cruelly realistic macro vision of history – and above all – the lavish type of abandonment in the embrace of the senses only an Italian can convey – these are the olfactory set of lenses we are invited to watch the world through.

“This scent represents the abandonment of pleasures, or Luxury intended as enjoyment of life with a sense of freedom and relaxation. The protagonists are neroli, in its refined light-heartedness along with the sophisticated and seductive leather. A Chypré structure presents an animalic facet that makes this fragrance seductive and intense as well as sophisticated and somehow vintage.” – Francesca Bianchi

In a crisp, snow-filled, sun-with-teeth-peeking-through-the-window morning, after reading Francesca’s words, I placed it generously on my wrists and neck and went about my morning routine, expecting the quite stern but loving leather-chypre embrace I remembered from the paper blotters. While smudging the black kohl under my eyes, I looked in the mirror and smiled, still under Bigazzi’s spell, as a scene from one of my favorite TV series came to mind. And if one can daydream of directing imaginary ads, at least let’s dream BIG when thinking of the protagonist.

Best John Malkovich

“He’s persuasive, seductive. He envelops you,” remarks the Holy See’s marketing chief, Sofia (Cécile de France). “The man seems to be made of velvet.”

John Malkovich’s performance in the New Pope TV series (2020) as Sir John Brannox will forever be embedded in my mind whenever I think of the perfect embodiment of the intellectual, introverted, fragile, yet majestic type of aristocratic elegance. And if one scent can encompass all of this, Libertine Neroli would surely be it.

The first notes are fresh, deceptively crisp, and green, making you feel a familiarity that makes you come closer, eyes wide open, unsuspecting of the darkness yet to come. It scratches at the edge of memory; for sure, you have smelled this before, maybe in your childhood, perhaps a freshly shaven, half-forgotten distant relative, hugging you in a railway station in a sequence of memory that has blurred away to oblivion. Or is it that bright spring day you skipped school, the green nettle shampoo that used to sting your eyes, and the thick cough syrup mixture that tasted like medicine dug from the forest’s undergrowth? Time shifts and perception changes, leaving the nostalgia behind and morphing the scent to a type of old-world elegance only an Italian soul would know how to balance in just the right proportions. From one gorgeous facet to the other, the chypre path winds between sleek leather, warm sticky labdanum, and sweet resins until it reaches the base – where shadows elongate into the mossy dark green realm and the animalic whispers of arcane secrets.

Main accords: bergamot, petit-grain, neroli, geranium, iris, animalic accord, leather, labdanum, benzoin, oakmoss

Also, check out the reviews for Unspoken Musk, Encounters, Byzantine Amber Luxe, Calme, Volupte, Dark Side, Sex and the Sea, Sticky Fingers, Angel Dust, Lost in Heaven.

  • Wow that picture of the man and woman hiking through the rocky crags. They are in love and up for random adventures, as long as they’re together. It’s warm outside and they’ve heard about a little known beach beyond the crags and hills. The wind blows with the smell of leaves and flowers. It’s a gorgeous image to use for a perfume, as I feel like this perfume is a relaxed adventure, it’s familiar, yet unknown at the same time. I really love the scent of neroli, it makes me think of warm summer days full of possibilities, just like this picture conjures the same feelings. I’ve only tried Divine Perversion from Francesca Bianchi and Hedonic, but it’s gorgeous and worth a sniff, or a full bottle-it’s sexy, but cozy. I thoroughly enjoy it, and it lasts forever. Ohio, USA

  • Sounds absolutely unisexy. I liked the description of “medicine dug from the forest’s undergrowth.” I’m a gardener, so it sounds right up my alley. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

I have not had the opportunity to try a Francesca Bianchi perfume before so I’m unable to share what my favorite is but everything I read to describe it reminds me of my summers spent in Greece. I love perfume with notes of Bergamot…..I live in the US.

  • Ah! I love Francesca Bianchi but still haven’t bought a perfume. But as I remember Libertine Neroli, Nicoleta is right: it is a delicate nostalgic letter, introverted yet bright. Unspoken musk is my favourite one tho. I am from EU.

  • Love Francesca Bianchi fragrances. Im interested in her first Fragrance Neroli. Each fragrance has a story. Thank you for this chance USA

  • Byzantine amber definetly sparks my interest. I never tried Francesca Bianchi but Libertine Neroli sounds magnificent! I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I have recently begun exploring Francesca Bianchi’s fragrances and each one I have tried thus far has been incredible. The Dark Side and The Black Knight instantly went into my cart. I did not grab this one in my first set of samples, but it sounds quite lovely. I admittedly skipped over it, thinking it was just a fresh, soapy neroli. Discovering that its a chypre built around neroli and leather has certainly changed my perspective as chypre is my favorite classic structure. I will certainly be getting my nose on this no matter what. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

This sounds interesting. A Neroli w/ leather and Chypre to give it a bit of a animalic vibe. Doesn’t sound like something I have in my collection but sounds like something I would like to try out. This would be my 1st time trying a Francesca Bianchi Perfume.

  • Love the sense of freedom and the mood picture. In the middle of winter it is a tease to see people dressed for heat. The notes sound lovely. I haven’t tried any of her fragrances yet. NY state USA

This scent represents the abandonment of pleasures, or luxury intended as enjoyment of life with a sense of freedom and relaxation and elegant! It is fresh, vintage, seducing, sophisticated.
It is a wonderful neroli refined light-heartedness along with the sophisticated and seductive Leather.

  • Nicoleta’s thoughtful description of Libertine Neroli by Francesca Bianchi has ignited my curiosity, especially the aromatic journey through Italy’s vibrant past. The combination of fresh, green notes interwoven into the blend of leather, labdanum, and resins is sooo appealing. Although I haven’t experienced any Francesca Bianchi’s perfumes yet, this review makes me eager to explore Libertine Neroli, particularly as a lover of neroli-based fragrances.

I am from the EU Germany

  • From bright to dark, passing an animalic touch.
The photo of the couple (campaign ad?), describes the scent.
Fun, Sun, and youthful, going down on those rocks.

Libertine Neroli sounds interesting to me because the article, and what I know about Francesca Bianchi’s creation.
Her bottles are 30ml, and you don’t need much. Her creations are bold, strong, with the intention to challenge those willing to try her perfumes.

I don’t own any Francesca Bianchi’s fragrances, but I am eyeing one ir Teo to add this year. And hopefully, I will be the lucky winner of Libertine Neroli.

    From Massachusetts, USA.

  • Chypre, animalic leather topped by neroli? I would adore a bottle of this! I love Francesca’s work, and believe that Nicoleta puts it perfectly: “making you feel a familiarity that makes you come closer” … THIS! The reason I adore Francesca Bianchi and her wonderful talent for creating living lovely pieces. They connect, then reinvent on repeat 🙂 Fingers and toes crossed for this drawing!! — I’m in the US

  • How Italy’s social life and all the glorious places of the bygone eras was the inspiration behind this perfume was interesting. The way this chypré creation goes through different stages from the fresh, green and crisp beginning all the way down to the base with its animalic, mossy dark green facets is intriguing. I’ve never tried any Francesca Bianchi perfume. Thank you. New York, USA.

  • Based on Nicoleta’s review, what sparks my interest the most is how the first notes – fresh, deceptively crisp, and green morphe to a type of old-world elegance only an Italian soul would know how to balance in just the right proportions – chypre with warm sticky labdanum, sweet resins and mossy dark green notes.

  • Enthusiastically, this fragrance promises an olfactory experience that artfully balances familiarity and sophistication, a symphony of scents with Italian soul and timeless allure.
My favourite Francesca Bianchi Perfume is Sex and the sea
    Hugs from Romania

  • I have a deep, deep passion and love for Italy’s cinematic “Dolce far niente” way of life that oozes in every sun-touched patch of sand, hill, old rustic house and vineyard. Nicoleta’s review brought back memories from days of doing nothing during my past trips in Italy. Days too hot to go for walks unde the scorching sun and yet too filled with the excitement of travel to afford falling asleep and missing anything. I have previously tested Libertine Neroli and I really identified with the way Nicoleta felt the mood of this fragrance. I love Fracesca’s works. My favourites from her releases would be Etruscan Water (another fragrance that screams Italian rocky wild beaches at sunset, to me) and Under my Skin.
Sending best wishes from Romania. 🙂

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I love how her perfumes are unapologetic and this sounds no different. I’d love to try this especially because of the anamalic purr. I live in Indiana.

  • As a screenwriter and a massive fan of the New Pope, to see ti referenced in a review for a fragrance made me smile, so I definitely want to try the fragrance that evoked the comparison. Also, it would be my first Biacnhi!

  • Amanda32828 says:

Awesome review by Nicoleta. This fragrance sound like the perfect spring summer fragrance, besides what’s not to love about a neroli in the magic hands of Francesca Bianchi? Really I have been looking to become the main character of my own story for a really long time. Thank you for another great review and for the opportunity to participate in your draw. Commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA

  • My favotite from her line is Sticky Fingers. I am looking forward to trying Libertine Neroli as the perfumes I know from Francesca are on the heavier side, so a neroli-based one is a new thing for me.
    Thanks! Europe

  • This perfume seems to be beautiful firstly because I’m italian(ahahah) then because it seems to be nostalgic, it can recall beautiful memories with it neroli scent. I love chypre perfume so I know i’ll like this one too. My favourite FB perfume is surely The lover’s tale but I love them all.

This sounds like a fascinating floral and leather, with an amazing depth of complexity. I haven’t had a chance to smell any Bianchi perfumes. US.

  • Neroli fragrances always tend to be on the unisex side.
I would love to try this one out !

  • Nicoleta’s talent and poetic flair fits Francesca’s fragrances like a glove (a supple, shiny, pitch black leather one, for the record). These reviews show a match made in heaven.
Libertine Neroli sounds absolutely delightful: an elegant chiaroscuro, an ample palette of light and darkness, of day and night, of metropolitan coquetry and sensual, earthy forest depths.
I would be very curious to smell the evolution of this fragrance from its bright, fresh, crisp opening to the deep, mossy leathery-resinous drydown.
My favorite perfumes from the house are Sex and the Sea and Tyger Tyger.
    Commenting from the EU.

  • First, wow, the writing of this article. I love the idea of spraying this and rereading it and its description – green and dark – I love it. I live in the US.

  • I just recently acquired my first Francesca Bianchi fragrances, and for this time of year I’ve very much enjoyed Etruscan Water. I’d actually been contemplating Libertine Neroli as an additional acquisition, and one that my wife and I could share. I was intrigued by Nicoleta’s description of the initial green tones giving way to darker undertones of the base. I’m in North Carolina, USA.

  • Libertine Neroli sounds like a vintage chypre dream. Whats really intruiging for me that #libertineneroli seems to be no summer citrus, nor a cool refreshment or a fruity scent. Instead, it sounds like a luminous golden melange which radiates – like a warm yet tart floral elegance. Never bitter, but with a self-confident, proud sensuality.
I would be very happy to win this creation von Franchesca Bianchi and I’m from the EU.

  • This description, “Seductive and intense as well as sophisticated and somehow vintage” had me. I love her work and chypres, and my (current) favorite is Sticky Fingers. Thanks! US

  • I like the inspiration from the vibrant settings of Italy’s social life and the fresh, crisp, mossy composition with neroli. My favourite perfume from the brand is Sex And The Sea Neroli. It is another neroli-centered scent with sexy and beautiful aura. Greetings from EU.

  • Elizabeth Hatton says:

I don’t yet own a single Francesca Bianchi perfume but follow countless fragrance enthusiasts who love their perfumes! I am drawn to neroli so so much and love the animalic pieces included in this. It sounds so intimate and powerful. From Portland, OR.

  • Love the Dolce Vita Italian Cinema aesthetic of this fragrance. The citrus and neroli opening with leather on a chypre structure sounds elegant yet seductive. I’ve not sampled any Francesca Bianchi perfumes yet. I’m in the US.

  • This is actually my favorite perfume from Francesca Bianchi! (And I love a lot of hers). Nicoleta’s description of it as “lavish” feel accurate, as does the “old world elegance” and “animalic whispers”. It’s elegant and seductive for sure. I’d love to own a full bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • Neroli and leather do sound like a different, out of the ordinary creation, a step away from the nowadays trends. Wherever the crowd goes, run in the other direction!
I would love to get my nose on this one, more so if it has a vintage vibe to it. Thank you!

  • I love the fact that John Malkovich’s portrayal of Sir John Brannox is how Nicoleta introduces this scent! That and describing the opening as a freshly shaved, half-forgotten relative provides a tangible backdrop for the emotional connection this scent stirs. So far, Dark Side is our favorite from Francesca Bianchi, and excited to try more offerings! Cheers from Ohio!

  • I remember for sure the green nettle shampoo that used to sting your eyes, but also left the hair so sparkling clean It’s a nice childhood memory I would love to re-live. My favorite Francesca Bianchi perfume is Sex and the sea and I cannot see (see what I did here?) this coming as a surprise. I live in Romania, the land of all possibilities

  • At first, I found the neroli/orange flower perfumes a bit bland and uninteresting. Then, I began loving them for the clean feeling they impart, but I still saw them as unprovocative.
Trying a few of Francesca Bianchi’s scents, I’m pretty sure her take on neroli must be daring and maybe a bit challenging :), but I’m extremely curious about it.
Thank you for the review and the draw, from Europe.

  • Francesca Bianchi holds a special place in my list of favorite perfumers (I’ve received Tyger Tyger as a gift, and bought myself a bottle of Byzantine Amber).

Libertine Neroli -sunny and bright this one, fresh, sweet, chypre-green, perfect for warm days of La dolce vita. Italians know best, and Nicoleta can persuade us to seek libertinaggio without compromising elegance. As always, a pleasure to read her reviews (the green nettle shampoo? Haha. Had that too many times in my childhood).

Greetings from Portugal, hope to add Libertine Neroli to my collection

  • From one gorgeous facet to the other, the chypre path winds between sleek leather, warm sticky labdanum, and sweet resins until it reaches the base – where shadows elongate into the mossy dark green realm and the animalic whispers of arcane secrets.

Main accords: bergamot, petit-grain, neroli, geranium, iris, animalic accord, leather, labdanum, benzoin, oakmoss. This sounds like a magical concoction the notes sound great. Adding animalic, leathery and labdanum and iris really piqued my interest. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • Januarililjan says:

I like this fresh but alluring fragrance. Francesca Bianchi is very good and one of my favorite. Neroli is a beautiful note. I live in the EU.

  • Beautiful article !
I can imagine green smell likes as from childhood and with leather and labdanum it will be perfect contrast !
Unfortunately, I have not tested any Francesca Bianchi perfumes.
    from Greece

  • I love the parallel drawn between use of light and perfume – light and shade and edges… very apt. “unsuspecting of the darkness yet to come” is particularly evocative. I have a real weakness for both neroli and amber, so that bright beginning that turns to “leather, warm sticky labdanum, and sweet resins” is very tempting. Plus the vivid depiction of the chypre base: “mossy dark green realm and the animalic whispers of arcane secrets”. This is a perfume I’ve wanted to try for a while, and this review makes me want to try it even more.
As I said, I have s weakness for neroli, so Sex & The Sea Neroli is my fave from Francesca Bianchi thus far.
    I’m in the UK.

  • wandering_nose says:

I am getting a strong feeling that Libertine Neroli has managed to create very strong and unusual links in Nicoleta’s emotional memory, to moments and events lived decades ago… I am happy to be able to get to know Ms Bianchis latest creation. I love any sort of artistic connotations, it’s great when a perfume makes the wearer feel like a more grandiose version of themselves. I have had a streak of hit and misses with neroli-centered fragrances in the past; Libertine Neroli sounds different, way more grown up. I would love to see how the neroli and citrus works together with the leather, benzoin and oakmoss. My favorite perfumes from Francesca Bianchi’s atelier are Sticky Fingers and The Dark Side. I am based in the EU.

  • Neroli is one of my favourite note, but this one sounds different. With its mossy vibes and the iris+animalic Francesca Bianchi’s signature, it’s worth a try!
    I live in Italy, EU

  • If there is a common characteristic in many of Francesca’s perfumes, it is that animalic facet that she knows how to use so well, and that gives her perfumes the personality they have. Well, that same signature also appears in Libertine Neroli, if you haven’t tried it, do it!!! Greetings from Spain

  • Great review! I really enjoyed the description of Bigazzi’s cinematography. That does sound like a wonderful way to see the world. And you remind me to circle back on the New Pope.

Fragrances built around one ingredient are always interesting. Do they smell like a more intense version of the namesake material? Do they highlight a specific aspect of that note you usually don’t think about? Are the companion notes a surprise? Bianchi’s prioritization of the leathery chypre accord is unexpected, and a dark contrast to the soapy bright sweetness I typically associate with neroli, though the mossy drydown connects back to the green aspects of the perfume’s namesake.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Francesca Bianchi Perfume fragrances yet.

  • “Time shifts and perception changes, leaving the nostalgia behind and morphing the scent to a type of old-world elegance only an Italian soul would know how to balance in just the right proportions. I am yet to try anything from Francesca Bianchi, but have wanted to for a while, particularly Byzantine Amber which sounds lovely! Hopefully I get to try this out.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Nicoleta’s reviews can only be read with a notebook by one’s side. Movies, series, paintings, books – there’s always something more than perfume (as if that wasn’t already enough!) to be discovered. An animalic neroli? That sparks my interests. I love Francesca Bianchi’s creations (my favorite is Sticky Fingers) and I’d be thrilled to be able to try Neroli. Have a great weekend, Dia from The Netherlands, EU

  • I have always been a fan of that typical Francesca Bianchi DNA and I particularly enjoyed sex and the sea, both the OG and the Neroli version as well as Byzantine amber. I am very curious to find out what this has in store! Neroli forming the pilar of this perfume without losing that “animal touch”. When Nicoleta states that the chypre path winds between sleek leather, warm sticky labdanum, and sweet resins…some of my favorite notes, I just know I have got to get my nose on this.
    Kristof from Portugal, EU

Nicoleta’s review sent me to research the Italian cinematographer Luca Bigazzi. I always enjoy reviews from Nicoleta because I always learn about so many topics. I love the image of hugging a relative in a railway station. The notes in Libertine Neroli sound so well blended.

Thanks for the great review Nicoleta.

I love the big citrus in this fragrance – bergamot, neroli that really turns a spotlight on.

Green nettle shampoo sounds so intriguing – I need to find some.
