If you are a regular reader of ÇaFleureBon, then you know how talented we believe Michael Schrammel is; he’s a new-on-the scene artisan perfumer from Wisconsin (I awarded his brand For The Scent of It Best Discovery of 2022). Michael is also our Notes From the lab Contributor.

Michael credits Sylvia Plath and one of her writings from “The Bell Jar” for the creation of Forbidden Fig, the first perfume he launched in his line.  “I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked…I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest.” – Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Michael chose to encapsulate this imagery into For the Scent of It Forbidden Fig by creating a fresh fig of realism. Each spray is like a bite into a fig, fresh off the tree. The sunshine peeking through the leaves while a breeze carries aloft a musk of serenity.-Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

. Notes: Fig Leaf, Sunny Grapefruit, Fig Pulp, and Musk.

I’m always reminded by Steven that fig is not ever a natural note, it’s an accord. I don’t currently own any fig inspired fragrances but I love the fruit, I have eaten lots of it, they’re delicious. I don’t mind a little vegetal/earthy fragrance if it’s done correctly which I get the vibe from this one. Also, it being lactonic is a plus! Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • Fig is one of my favorite fragrance notes and it’s so interesting to hear about creating the accord and the the inspiration behind this particular fragrance! I’m in TX, USA

I loved hearing about how the fig accord in this was created! I love me a fig fragrance!! I live in NJ

So interesting to hear about the creation of the fig accord. Oh how I adore this note. Philosykos, Debaser, and Purple Fig are a few of my favorite fragrances that showcase this accord, and I know I would just love Forbidden Fig with that dreamy, delicious lactonic aspect. Thank you for the video review, Steven and the written introduction Michelyn!

Hello Steven and Cafleurebon and Michelyn ,I love the fig accord my favorite is Christian Dior Homme Dune thank you for your generosity.

  • equatorgrim says:

Love the juxtaposition of Sylvia Plath’s quote which is full of longing and melancholia with the uplifting, fresh, sunny description of the fragrance itself in the introduction. A fig well-picked from the tree.

Very much enjoy how Steven is able to take simple notes and break them down into complex and articulate descriptions. A transitional, earthy, sweater weather scent is so exciting.

    In the US.

  • I always love Steven’s content on his channel. He is always so detailed. I am Intrigued by Michelyn’s view on fig.

    Cheers form Seattle, WA.

  • Well Steven has sold me! I have been looking at Forbidden Fig and wasn’t sure, because of the limited notes. But I trust Steven and his reviews. I did buy 2 For the Scent of it perfumes for my husband, Loving Spoonful and Oud Cafe (I think that was the name). Both are lovely. My husband has been wearing Loving Spoonful quite a bit this summer. In maryland.

I love a good fig fragrance. I like how Michelyn mentioned how each spray is like a bite into a fresh fig. I enjoyed Stevens video as well. I liked how he mentioned the projection of this fragrance and said that it would work well as a “sweater weather” fragrance. I live in Maryland USA.

Fig accord is one of my favorite notes — I am currently wearing Philosykos! For the Scent of It Forbidden Fig has been on my list since I first read about this brand. I enjoyed Michelyn’s description of “a bite into a fig, fresh off the tree” and I learned even more about the fragrance from Steven’s video review — especially that this perfume has an earthy quality to it. I would love to try it myself!

  • From the intro I learned that Michael credits Sylvia Plath and one of her writings from “The Bell Jar” for the creation of Forbidden Fig. From the video I learned the perfume is not overly sweet. US

Michael’s creations are so good! One of my favorite fragrances from his house is Wasteland Warrior…One of my most addictive fragrances in my entire collection. As Steven stated in his review, this house uses high quality ingredients…and my nose has duly noted this. My wife and I currently own 4 “For The Scent Of It” creations and will be adding more. Forbidden Fig sounds so good!

  • Fantastic review by Steven and great introduction by Michelyn.
For the Scent of it is a fantastic brand that I had the pleasure of trying this year. The quality they manage is just amazing.
Forbidden Fig I definately need to try since I am a fan of fig and fruity fragrances. The realism that this fragrance offer is surely fantastic and I hope to try it soon. I also love how clean it is and it fits perfect for summer.

  • I find fig based fragrances very calming. The explanation of the creation of a fig accord is fascinating. I’m so used to the scent it fresh and dried figs, I didn’t realize it wasn’t a natural note. Forbidden Fog sounds like a perfect scent for the upcoming cooler weather. I’m in the US.

  • I love Steven’s detailed knowledge about notes, like fig. I do love fog frags, and Michelyn’s inclusion of Sylvia Plath to illustrate Michael’s inspiration was great! I have a sample by Philosykos and I keep putting off getting a fb. Thank you for the draw and the great reviews. I’m in the us

  • I’m excited that Steven says this is stand out and high quality. There are so many fig fragrances out there, and I know Steven has smelled a lot. That’s a good longevity too. Now I want to read the “Bell Jar”, sounds like an interesting and inspiring read. I’d probably eat all the figs as I love them and grow them in my yard. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Of the FTSOI samples we’ve tried, Forbidden Fig is my wife’s favorite, and one she reaches for often. We’re going to need a bottle! The balance of sweet fruit and aromatic musk is really nice; there’s a hazy quality to this fragrance that makes it easy to wear and a perfect fit for sunny days. (It sounds like Steven also reaches for it in the summer.) I hadn’t heard about Michael’s “The Bell Jar” inspiration for this fragrance. Thanks for sharing, Michelyn! In Steven’s review, I’m glad he talked about this fragrance’s restrained sweetness and how Forbidden Fig utilizes the sweet fig accord and grapefruit. The lactonic, “earthy,” and “vegetal” aspects provide depth. Another detailed review from Steven.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’ve heard such good things about Forbidden Fig! I love fig notes and realistic nature-like perfumes in general, so Michelyn’s intro really caught my eye. I also really liked how Steven described it as earthy and juicy yet smooth and not overly sweet. I would love to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • The level of commitment and intentionality Michael puts in his fragrances is next level. I love the story behind the fragrance and carefully select notes! Just blind bought Blacker Sails and can’t wait to try it!

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Steven’s review and Michelyn’s introduction of Michael Schrammel’s American Indie House For The Scent of It. Steven’s describes this as one of the best budget fig fragrances on the market. Fig fragrances have become increasingly popular over the years. I appreciate the creamy milky fruity variety as well as the green fig leaves aspect of it which are both utilized in this fragrance. I love how Michael credits Sylvia Plath and one of her writings “The Bell Jar” for the creation of Forbidden Fig. I also like how Michael chose to encapsulate Forbidden Fig by creating a fresh fig realism. I am from the USA.

  • Really excited about For the Scent of It forbidden fig as Steven describes it as it doesn’t sound too sweet.
Enjoyed Michelyn’s introduction about Forbidden Fig was based on a Sylvia Plath quote which is a bit dark but this perfume is photorealistic and sounds happy

  • Thanks for the nice writeup Michelyn and the nice video Steven.

It was very neat to see that Michelyns review mentioned that this fragrance was inspired by Sylvia Plath.

I appreciate that Steven mentioned that fig is an accord and not an EO. Resonant is a good way to describe this fragrance – the combination of fig and grapefruit is just buzzing with energy.

    Cheers from WI, USA
