EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss by Quentin Bisch Review (2015) +The Orient Express Giveaway

EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss review

When I think of EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss, I imagine Agatha Christie’s famous character, the world-renowned retired detective, Hercule Poirot, boarding the famous Orient Express train. The journey begins, and the passengers are settling into their roomettes. Buckle up; your sensory buds are about to be shaken up by none other but murder itself, and the plot was set up by one of the best olfactory storytellers, Quentin Bisch. Bravo!

The night has fallen, and guests have gathered in the dinner car, slowly sipping on the cocktails in anticipation of a hearty dinner. A woman is sitting in the corner. She is traveling alone and has not spoken a word yet to anyone. Her lips are painted crimson red; she is dressed in a long silk dress with an elegant, chocolate color velvet robe thrown over her shoulders. Her lips touch the rim of the glass as she half-smiles in the pleasure of tasting what looks like the most delicious apricot liqueur. She seems to be ambivalent to the curious and prying glances of the crowd, desperately trying to figure out her story.

What is she running from on this decadent train? Where is she heading? And most importantly, who is she?

That is the opening accords of EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss, and it only gets better from here on. The story begins to unfold. Will the poison be involved, you may ask. Perhaps it will be the preferred method of murder. But who will be a victim of this delicious plot…

Half-past midnight, as Mr. Poirot lay there tossing and turning, he heard someone running past his door, unable to fall asleep. In the early morning, the cries of maids were heard far across the mountains surrounding the moving train as the body of one of the passengers was discovered. He was a handsome man in his late thirties, full of life and charisma just the night before. He was murdered in cold blood, still dressed in his night robe, ghostly pale skin. You guessed it; there were traces of deadly venom on his lips. The poison killed him instant, paralyzing his senses one by one. Were there any clues left at the scene of a murder? As Hercule Poirot stepped into the room, he felt a slight whiff of spicy amber fragrance wafting in the air, a touch of rose perhaps and a pinch of vanilla in the base. This may just be the clue he needs to solve this murderous puzzle. All that is left is to find the person who wore this intoxicating fragrance.

The day was spent interviewing the passengers, but no useful details were uncovered. Except that everyone heard footsteps in the middle of the night and a slight whiff of the fragrance described above. As it turned out, a mysterious figure was seen walking down the hallway on what turned out to be the night of the murder. After too many cocktails, was it a real clue or a result of pure imagination? The only real evidence is the trail of her venomous perfume. Perhaps she wore the EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss before planting the final kiss of death on her victim.

The turn came to interview the mysterious woman we had seen earlier in the dining car. She was hard to read, even for Mr. Poirot. She was traveling to Istanbul and would be staying there for the duration of the summer. Her posture, behavior, and story left our detective puzzled. Her alibi was spotless, yet he couldn’t shake off a gut feeling that she was not as innocent as she tried to portray herself.

Later that night, the train arrived in Istanbul. The last dinner among the passengers promised to be an awkward one as everyone suspected each other. The atmosphere was filled with tension as the bloody steaks were served, but after a few cocktails, everyone seemed to relax, and it was almost time to arrive at the station.

Most of the guests had left the dining car, and there were only a few still lingering by the bar. Hercule Poirot was quietly nursing his glass of wine while watching the travelers through the train window as he saw our mysterious, lonely passenger woman getting into the taxi. It was almost as if she felt his piercing eyes on her and turned around. She gave him a long stare. Her eyes were of the most beautiful shade of golden amber, and without saying a word, she slipped into the cab and was gone. As Hercule Poirot was exiting the dining car, he walked by the table she sat at during dinner. Suddenly he felt a familiar whiff of the fragrance and picked up her napkin, with traces of her lipstick. It smelled of perfume he noticed at the scene of the murder. Opulent and poisonous, it was impossible to forget, just like her amber eyes. The fragrance felt electrified and thunderous. Like a sweet taste of apricot liqueur on the lips of a woman you desire. A spicy whiff of saffron and suede-like smoothness of the sandalwood and vanilla in the base. It smelled of lust and danger, of risk and love. It smelled of pain and betrayal. It smelled of murder. It was her all along. He knew his intuition was never wrong, yet he couldn’t quite find the reason to detain her any longer. Perhaps their paths will cross again, and he will not let her go so quickly this time. That intoxicating EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss fragrance of hers will be all the trail he needs to find our beautiful murderess.

Notes: Saffron, Neroli, Nutmeg, Rose absolute, Davana, Amber, Vanilla, Styrax, Sandalwood.

I love Poirot! So far the only Ex Nihilo scent I’ve tried is Devil Tender, which is aptly named.

  • I enjoyed reading the murder mystery review, very clever idea. Venenum Kiss sounds really nice. I particularly like the sound of what Olya said, “Like a sweet taste of apricot liqueur on the lips of a woman you desire. A spicy whiff of saffron and suede-like smoothness of the sandalwood and vanilla in the base.” Sounds great. Ive not tried anything yet from Ex Nihilo but would like to. Thanks for the generous draw. From USA.

  • Olya… this is so creative. “The fragrance felt electrified and thunderous. Like a sweet taste of apricot liqueur on the lips of a woman you desire”. I love the movie and I know I would love VENENUM KISS

  • I have been an Agatha Christie fan since I was a kid, what a great way to review a fragrance. I am also a big QB fan. I haven’t tried any from Ex Nihilo. NV, USA.

  • I love how Olya uses murder on the Orient Express to describe this mysterious Fragrance. The notes are sexy. Venenum Kiss is definitely something I want to win . Thank you for this Chance USA

  • From Olya’s review, EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss seems like it has oriental vibes but with a western touch. It is a fragrance of multiple facets that slowly unfold over time. It has notes that I enjoy in perfumes like saffron and suede. I am in US.

  • What a review by Olya! You surely did an amazing job in this story based on the fragrance. Agatha Cristhie is one of my favorite female writers and I loved every word you wrote here. The spices, the saffron, the opulence, everything combines to this fragrance that is surely divine.
I hope to smell it soon.

  • This line appealed to me, “It smelled of lust and danger, of risk and love”.
    I don’t have a brand favorite. US

  • Wow! Olya you do weave quite the tale 🙂 It sounds like EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss would be inspire an irresistible attraction such as felt by those hapless mantises and spiders who know they’re going to be kissed to death. I’ve not yet tried any Ex Nihilo but I’m glad to start with the kiss. Thank you for an engaging review and for the giveaway. I’m in USA

  • The obvious take away from this article is the perfumer behind Venenum Kiss, Quentin Bisch. He is fast becoming a superstar perfumer and everything he touches is so unique and appealing I don’t know how he does it. I have never tried Ex Nihilo, but I see the brand mentioned while watching/reading people’s reviews.

  • I thought the murder plot of the review was so fun! I really like saffron fragrances but never tried anything with Davana. This would be my first fragrance from Indigo Perfumery if I win. I am from CA, USA.

  • Great story, Olya! I loved the timing of “the bloody steaks”, hahaha.

Venenum Kiss definitely is a story unto itself. My husband and I both wear it…

  • I love the story line. It describes the fragrance perfectly. Lovely details.
My fave from the brand is Explicite.

  • Great review Olya, Thanks! I tried several perfumes from the brand and Musc Infini was my favorite so far. Thanks for the draw! I live in the US.

  • This is a new brand for me! Fittingly I just watched Death on the Nile last week, so I enjoyed reading the Christie inspired review. I’m a big fan of saffron notes, as well as classic vanilla. Davana is also very intriguing and I am excited to see the note creeping up in more perfumes lately. Love how this sounds sexy yet dangerous! I am from New England, USA.

  • Venenum Kiss by Ex Nihilo seems to be a mysterious fragrance based on Olya’s review. This doesn’t sound like any fragrance I have tried before and would love to try this fragrance from Ex Nihilo. No favorite from Ex Nihilo yet but need to try a few especially Venenum Kiss and Explicite.

  • Such a great and creative review! I loved reading it. Olya has a talent for blending creative writing with perfume reviews. I have yet to try any Ex Nihilo fragrances. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • It’s a great review! My favourites from Ex Nihilo are: Gold Immortals and The Hedonist. From EU.

  • GennyLeigh says:

The image of Hercule Poirot brings to mind a certain moneyed, European glamor tied to a specific time period. It was fun reading Olya’s Hercule Poirot mystery and seeing how it unfolded much like the fragrance unfolds upon the skin. The spices, rose, davana and resin blend sounds like an intoxicating rich experience. MD, USA.

  • LightOfJoy says:

What an unconventional, compelling, and entertaining review! I felt like I was on the train, and could smell the lingering perfume.

I’ve never tried an Ex Nihilo perfume before, but Quentin Bisch is a very talented perfumer.

I’m in Texas, USA. Thank you for the review, and for the drawing. Good luck to everyone!

  • Bryant Worley says:

I love Olya’s Story, especially since I’m a Poirot Fanatic! And she interwove the fragrance notes seamlessly, and perfectly. Further, she gaveus the thought that the sillage and projection would be excellent, telling üs that, even through closed compartments, the other passengers would get a nose full. Brava! Encore!!!

I’ve never tried any Ex Nihilo, but because of YouTube, I desire to try Amber Fever or Fleur Narcotique.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and follow you on IG: @Brygantor_1.

  • That was quite a story Olya to describe the notes in EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss. I liked how Olya highlighted the uniqueness of Venenum Kiss by saying “That intoxicating EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss fragrance of hers will be all the trail he needs to find our beautiful murderess.” I have not tried this brand, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

Wonderful review Olya! What appealed to me about Olya’s review is the way she wove in the description of the perfume with the mystery and seductiveness of a Hercule Poirot novel. I ADORE Hercule Poirot and Agatha Chrystie, and the very reasons I do are the reasons Venenum Kiss as described by Olya appeals to me – that tension, that anticipation, and the drama, enveloping and intoxicating, translated into an opulent and spicy perfume of saffron, nutmeg, rose and smooth ambery sandalwood.

My favorite from the brand is definitely Fleur Narcotique. I live in the US.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

From Olya’s review, EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss seems like it has oriental vibes but with a western touch. It is a fragrance of multiple facets that slowly unfold over time. It has notes that I enjoy in perfumes like saffron and suede. I am in US. New York

Quentin Bisch!! Oh yes, fantastic! I really want to try out this house as well! Missouri USA.

  • What an awesome tale! Saffron, vanilla, rose, and sandlewood is one way I would like to go down and the last thing to smell. This is my first time hearing about the brand but not from Quentin Bisch. I am based in Marina, California.

  • Such wonderful imagery in this article! The notes are gorgeous. I love saffron with rose. It reminds me of Tom Ford’s Rose Prick, which I adore.
    I live in the USA.

  • Such a creative way to review a fragrance, weaving into a mystery. I love the name of the fragravce and the scent profile is right up my alley.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve certainly heard of this company, and I’ve heard a lot of admiration for them, but I still haven’t had a chance yet to try any of their fragrance releases. The list of notes for this fragrance is appealing to me, e.g. I like saffron, sandalwood, and vanilla and they seem to be prominent in this one. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I’m new to Ex Nihilo , Venenum Kiss is versatile , well made fragrance suitable for different occasions, from office settings, close encounters , to long cuddling night times. Nice natural smelling bouquet of roses, non confectionery apricot liqueur sweetness, and a little bit of both mystery and lust , that’s what Venenum Kiss is.
    Thanks for the draw

I loved Olya’s review of EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss and how she described it based on the Murder of Orient Express. Elaborating is such vivid detail every facet of this fragrance. A very spicy and aromatic Rose with Saffron and Nutmeg making way to a very resinous, ambery, vanillic, and creamy sandalwood drydown that sounds wonderful. My favorite fragrance from EX NIHILO is The Hedonist. I am from the USA.

  • Uncle1979 says:

Olya’s take on EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss reminded me of Dulce de Leche Apricot & Brandy Fruitcake I made last week. I imagined eating the cake, while on a trip in a train .
Thanks to Steven’s review of Atlas Cedar I now own the fragrance. Smells similar to Baghrir , traditional Moroccan Cake with pomegranate .
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I love Hercule Poirot and Agatha Chrystie, and the very reasons I do are the reasons Venenum Kiss as described by Olya appeals to me with that tension, that anticipation, and the drama, enveloping and intoxicating, translated into Saffron, vanilla, rose, and sandalwood and Quentin Bisch’s work!

My favorite is Fleur Narcotique. I live in the US.

  • What a fun review, Olya! It was a real page-turner, with lots of twists and turns, and you worked the notes of this fragrance into the story beautifully.

EX NIHILO Venenum Kiss sounds warm and heady—perfect for a cool night out. I haven’t tried any EX NIHILO fragrances, and this one sounds like a wonderful place to start.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • WaltherP99 says:

Top notch review, Olya literally took the words out of my mouth.
Venenum Kiss is everything Olya said it is, thick and loud syrupy amber, with sweet peach , rose and vanilla. The only thing that surprised me , is the fact there’s no suede leather mentioned by Olya, to me the suede is one of the most dominant notes in Venenum Kiss.
If I have to rate my favorite Ex Nihilo fragrances:
    1. Night Call
    2. Atlas Fever
    3. Amber Sky
The fragrances I’ve mentioned are from the higher end of Ex Nihilo portfolio, all are fantastic.
    All profiles I follow already , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I wonder what kind of fragrance associated with “Opulent and poisonous” , “impossible to forget” stories?
Ex Nihilo i have no experience with, in Venenum Kiss i see classy spicy fragrance, with creamy sandalwood, and rose , modernized with slight additions of gourmand touches.
Decadent train, decadent man with a decadent suit, it’s all me. Venenum Kiss is contemporary and refined fragrance i’d like to win
    Thank you all

“Her lips are painted crimson red” , “she is dressed in a long silk dress with an elegant, chocolate color velvet robe” …. “handsome man in his late thirties, full of life and charisma”

    Wow
I almost started embodying the strong and intense feel of an enigmatic night in Orient Express , and I also know the type of guys Olya likes, and the way she dresses, when she wants to be the Femme Fatale ot the night .
Venenum Kiss is sensual and sophisticated, but also playful liquor , with hints of candied apricot , and vanilla.
My favorite Ex Nihilo is called Amber Sky , Harrods exclusive . Gorgeous fragrance, but unfortunately it costs £495 , right now that’s approximately $650
    Thank you for the opportunity
