État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow Review (Mathilde Bijaoui) 2019 + Dune Rose Draw

“He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe! ” – Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in David Lynch’s film “Dune” (1984), based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel

Expanding its rose-centric “Orange Extraordinaire” collection that was initiated with Experimentum Crucis, (inspired by Isaac Newton’s world-changing scientific theories), État Libre d’Orange has just released the exuberant – former Selfridges exclusives – 500 Years and Spice Must Flow. Faithful to the collection’s concept of paying tribute to luminaries of progress or key events in history of mankind, 500 Years (to be reviewed soon) is an olfactory homage to the Renaissance, while Spice Must Flow honors both the spice merchants who boldly traveled old and new paths and Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi “Dune” saga.

The very name of État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow is a line from David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation of Herbert’s highly successful novel, and it epitomizes the vital importance of “the Spice” (or “Melange”) to the vast, spread among galaxies, worlds of a very distant future.  An addictive and  mind/body altering drug, the Spice is essential to interstellar travel, as it enables its users to extend their life and enhance their mental abilities. Meeting the universal demand for it is an extremely hard task to tackle, since the Spice can only be harvested on the inhospitable, desolate desert planet Arrakis (aka Dune), through a complicated and highly dangerous procedure; controlling Arrakis, and its Spice production, equals to almost controlling the Universe…

In actual history, spice trade has for centuries played a major role in the development of Western civilization, very often a most dramatic one. The (frequently artful) attempts of Arab traders to control the spice market by spreading all sorts of fantastic tales (while keeping the actual production locations completely secret), prompted Europeans to explore areas in which they had no interest up to then, in order to access directly the valuable aromatic substances. Around 1090 the Seljuk Empire’s obstruction of the existing trade routes triggered the Crusades, while a similar act by the Ottoman Empire in 1453 spurred the Age of Discovery. Wars and conflicts aside, spice trade facilitated cultural exchange between Asia, Northeast Africa and Europe, eventually affecting all civilizations that were touched by it. The pressing need for new maritime routes and the adventurous men who travelled them, easing the spice flow, virtually shaped the world. It’s to those spice merchants/travelers of the past that État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow pays tribute – for, while trading and exploring, they were also connecting the world as unwitting cultural ambassadors.

4 Étienne de Swardt of État Libre d'Orange & Mathilde Bijaoui

Étienne de Swardt of État Libre d’Orange & Mathilde Bijaoui of MANE

The evocative idea of Étienne de Swardt, founder and creative director of État Libre d’Orange, was aptly realized in scent form by MANE perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui (who has also composed the brand’s Malaise of the 1970s, Bijou Romantique, and Like This.) État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow opens with a vibrant, enveloping spice cloud: sprinkles of tingly pepper and luminous saffron, as well as generous doses of comforting cardamom and energizing ginger, unleash an aromatic extravaganza reminiscent of the glorious spice markets of the East. A velvety rose soon emerges amidst this heated, dry spiciness, accompanied by warm, reassuring cinnamon (a possible clin d’œil to “Dune”, where the Spice is described as having a decidedly cinnamon-like taste). At this stage the fragrance shifts towards a no-nonsense, non-gourmand sweetness, as the Turkish rose’s jammy floralcy mellows the spices, while the smoky, resinous incense adds a mystical dimension to the composition. Maybe I’m already on holiday mode, but I do find an abstract, albeit familiar, Christmas vibe running through the scent, a result of its “gingerbread accord” that to me smells exactly like an austere, sugarless, but highly fragrant pain d’épices, and the fir balsam note that adds an aura of dark, wintry woods of evergreen trees. The sensuous spicy/smoky/rosy experience of État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow lasts for a good 8-10 hours, before it slowly fades into an unexpected musky-clean, “soapy” rose that feels like taking a relaxing rose petal bath after a day under the blazing sun.

Etat Libre D'Orange The Spice must Flow review

Dune Rose (Multimedia/digital collage by Despina Veneti)

Unmistakably extrovert and unapologetically commanding, État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow is a thoughtfully conceived and brilliantly executed olfactory tribute to the grand travels of bold, ingenious humans that forged new routes, and the universal longing for spice as the wind beneath their sails. All this, and a rose blooming in the dunes too.

Notes: Cardamom, Ginger, Pepper, Gingerbread Accord; Cinnamon, Cumin, Turkish Rose, Saffron; Incense, Fir Balsam, Cypriol, Patchouli.

Disclaimer: Many thanks to Étienne de Swardt for my tester bottle of État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow. The opinions are my own.

  • Oh wow, as a huge DUNE fan I must get this fragrance! I’m looking forward to the new Dune film out next year!

I enjoyed the history in this post as well. Great review top to bottom! In from Canada.

  • As is always the case, the art direction of the articles is exquisite. It really helps tell the story and it adds a wonderfully evocative element to the detailed review. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe. My favorites from ELdO are Tom of Finland and Afternoon of a Faun. I haven’t read Dune or seen the movie, but it your description of it makes me very curious. Thanks again!

  • Edward St. Grey says:

I loved reading about the saffron, cinnamon and rose facets. My wife loves Dune and is excited about the new movie. She enjoys rose and we have been curious about trying this one but the availability and price were inhibiting that. I live in the USA.

  • Symbian Pandora says:

Wow!! Despina has done a wonderful review.
Read the book, saw the movie and read the book again!!
Yes, the spice must flow, but be wary of the giant worms!!!!
For some inexplicable reason I have never tried a perfume from this brand!! Can’t say why.
They picked a wonderful perfumer for this!!
Winor not, I must try this.
    I am in the USA.

  • Coconu Monica says:

I would not have dreamed of this, Dune gave me strength and confidence growing up, as a teen, it was the beginning of my passionate love for sci fie books/films. I find the review so true to what Dune is to me that it almost felt like I was right back in the universe I still draw inspiration and meaning from.
I have not worn any Etat Libre D’Orange perfumes, sadly.
    I live in Europe.

  • There’s growth of The spice trade around the world and how all scents transpire together. Has allot going on and sounds wonderful. I love “I Am Trash” USA

  • Spice Must Flow is an interesting concept, inspired by movie Dune and also reminds us spice trade played an important role in global trade in the past and may do so in interstellar trade, too if future follows the past. My fav. is Jasmin et Cigarette. I am in US

  • Great detailed review. Longevity for 8-10 hours is impressive. The spicy/smoky and rosy scent sound amazing at this cold season.

  • As a rose fan, I loved the description of this fragrance as a velvety rose with non-gourmand sweetness and a dimension of smoky, resinous incense. Have not tried any État Libre d’Orange fragrances yet and was not aware of the novel until now. Regards from Boston USA.

  • Brian_perfume_ says:

I am a HUGE fan of État Libre d’Orange Je Suis in homme, it was my second ELDO purchase and my list prizes blind buy for a fragrance, I would love to Try Spice Must Flow!

  • I love that Despina included actual historical facts of spice trading, it really did shape civilizations. My favorite ELDO is Remarkable People. And yes I’ve read the book and seen both movies and looking forward to the upcoming remake coming in 2020 with Jason Momoa! I live in Indiana, USA

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

État Libre d’Orange, is one of the houses I really read about as I get mesmerized by reading their product names and I like you or someone like you the most from the house 🙂

I haven’t got the chance to read this book as I read too much of my educational books a lot 😀 and haven’t got the chance to watch the movie however after reading Despina’s review I am interested in watching the movie 🙂 as she described it so perfectly.

Spice Must Flow seems an exciting fragrance and I would love to win this for sure 🙂

    I am from Atlanta, USA

  • I have not yet read the book or the film but this review has already cemented the legend of this fragrance for me in my mind as a lover of spice-based Oriental perfumery. I have really enjoyed every ELDO fragrance i sampled so far but this one sounds unbeatable to me. Thank you, Canada

  • Fantastic! I was wondering when these would reach out shores! Huge Dune fan plus have a few Eldos: Jasmin et Tabac, Fils de Dieu, and Like This. I got the Dune reference but didnt think about the Spice Trade and the exploration for trade historically. The notes look promising and am eager to try as I do like Like This by Mathilde Bijaoui. This sounds perfect for the season!
    I live in the US

  • I’m consistently delighted by ELDO’s creative concepts. Drawing inspiration from early modern and sci fi spice trades is such a novel idea. This scent also sounds gorgeous thanks, in part, to the review’s evocative description. I’ve read all of the Dune books and I also think the Lynch film is underrated; it’s just its own distinct thing. I’m in the US.

  • I loved the world history lesson on the spice trade and the merchants that are the inspiration for this spicey, balsamy fragrance! I love history and learning about a fragrance that is inspired by history is so interesting to me. I also love that Despina got a a Christmas vibe from this fragrance, this is one that I would love to try! My fave ELDO fragrance is You or Someone Like You and I live in the US.

  • Andrei artimon says:

Oau huge Dune fan !! Must get my hand on a bottle , my favourite from the house is rien intense incence , new york , usa .

  • My eyes nearly popped out of my head at the sight of “gingerbread accord.” Christmas vibes indeed! It’s the kind of rose scent I like – spicaaaaay. Gourmand too. Incidentally, one of my first highschool english reports was on Frank Herbert’s Dune series, so I’m quite familiar with the auspices of the muad’dib, as well as the needs of the starship pilots (I count myself among them). A very much evocative description of Spice Must Flow and a trip down memory lane to winters spent in the imagination of a burgeoning visionary. Definitely will be picking up a bottle once it becomes available, even if it’s just for the sentimental value of riding the mighty fragrance worm. Cheers. Canada.

  • This fragrance sounds so complex and comforting to me! I loved how this review made me envision being in India, in an open air market full of spices and incense! My dream! I have never tried any of these fragrances, but would love to! I’m in florida USA

  • Despina Veneti’s reviews are always tactile for me. In this piece, I FEEL the adventure and excitement of travel to distant and exotic places. Her description coupled with my long buried memory sense of Dune’s “spice” from my early readings of the series makes me eager to personally enjoy this one. Love from New York

  • All that spice and a rose! I’m a fan of spicy fragrances and would love to try Spice Must Flow. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! I like that it has a holiday vibe. USA

  • I love Eau de Protection! Yes, I am a Dune fan and looking forward to the new movie remake. Spice must flow has a great description and Loved the article, Despina. USA

  • Oh, velvety rose and “Dune”! I’m in heaven. I have a bottle of that classic and this review reminds me to pull it out again. The ELdO fragrance sounds lovely with its hint of gingerbread, smoky resin and an enveloping dry spice cloud. It sounds like a perfect transport to the desert. Favorite ELdO is Fat Electrician. I’m in the US.

  • Thank you Despina for this detailed review. I think it sounds much more interesting than the recent Spice Blend from Dior which is bland and boring. I’m glad this one has come out of the Selfridge exclusivity and is available for all to discover.
I love the Dune series, and my fav ELdO is Rien. Thank you very much for the draw! I live in EU.

  • I really liked the Dune references. Never heard of this house but are they trying to make Spice?!
    Coming in from cloudy NYC

  • Love this! Dune is a great book and the old miniseries is way better than the movie. Can’t wait for the new version. This scent with it’s spice, rose, and cinnamon sounds great. Love all the references Despina threw in from Dune. Great review and would love to win this one. My favorite Etat so far is Fat Electrician

  • I liked Despina’s description of the “Christmas Vibe” of this fragrance, it sounds very appealing. My current ELDO favorite is Vraie Blonde. I live in the USA; thanks for this draw!

  • Sounds great by such a terrific description – Christmas in a bottle?
ELDO has some good ones – You or someone like you.
    Pennsylvania USA
    Sunny

  • Jennifer Wingard says:

As Despina describes it, I’m also finding myself drawn to spicy ‘Christmas’ scents. The two ELDO fragrances I have are the gingery Like This, and Noel au Balcon; both are spirited festive fragrances in their own right. Spice Must Flow will be perfect for warming up a Maryland winter night.

  • polaroidcaesar says:

I am a massive Dune fan. I’ve read the whole series twice, seen the David Lynch movie, the Syfy miniseries (both Dune and Children of Dune), and played the video games since childhood. So of course this has been on my must try list since I first heard about it. I liked how Despina linked the exclusivity of the spice melange in the books to the importance of spices in our world’s history, and of course the actual description of the fragrance itself, which sounds right up my alley. I’m a lover of rose and spices, so I don’t see how I could go wrong here. My favorite ELDO fragrances are Like This, You Or Someone Like You, Rien Intense Incense, and Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes. I’m located in the USA.

  • I’ve watched Dune twice and liked it quite a lot even though the worms were a little over the top 🙂 I’m always amazed at the myriad places perfumers get inspiration from and appreciate Despina’s provision of the history of the spice trade/routes. In addition, being a lover of spices and with specific mentions of saffron, cardamon and pepper, this sounds like a good fit for me. I haven’t tried any Etat Libre D’Orange fragrances and hope this will be my first. I’m in USA

  • Great review, this one sounds amazing. The notes of spices are between my favourites, especially cinnamon and saffron. Also i’m a big fan of the Dune movie and books, so it intrigues me a lot. I would love to try it, thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU.

  • Dune was my favorite book when I was a teenager and I’m deeply curious as to how this desert rose from Etat Libre D’Orange is going deliver because I find this line more hit or miss while appreciating the experiementation. I remember being sad when the book ended and the rich tapestry of a universe Frank Herbert built came to an end, then I found the sequels…

I’m in the USA, thank for the drawing.

  • I like that the perfume has basis in both spice routes in history and also in the book and film “Dune”. I have not read or seen “Dune” but may have to now. I really enjoyed the description of the perfume as well. It sounds really nice. I have not tried anything from ELDO yet. In the U.S. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • Enjoyed both the book and the movie. I absolutely loved the backstory that Despina gave us. I must say that this fragrance had me at “…I do find an abstract, albeit familiar, Christmas vibe running through the scent, a result of its “gingerbread accord” that to me smells exactly like an austere, sugarless, but highly fragrant pain d’épices, and the fir balsam note that adds an aura of dark, wintry woods of evergreen trees. ” I so want to sniff this. Thank you for the review and thank you for the generous draw. I”m in the USA

  • RobertNicolasB says:

I loved hearing about the history of spice trading. Great review! I have only samples Tom of Finland and I loved it. I have watched Dune countless times and it’s directed by my favorite director of all time: David Lynch!!! Thanks for the drawing.
    -USA

  • Despina’s review is great as always, and the used pictures are amaising! The inclusions in the history is also interesting and makes me very curious about this fragrance. I never try any of the house fragrance, but this one will be on my top list, also by taking into consideration the asociation with Dune movie.
    Thanks,
    Greetings from RO, EU.

  • Lovely review once again by Despina, I loved reading about this “spicy cocktail”, to call it so. Being used to the playful, a bit ironic, enfant terrible kind of attitude that ELDO creations usually have, I actually appreciate the change which this perfume seems to have. There is something very serious and solemn about this name and concept. A tribute to wayfarers, negotiators, courageous and energetic people who opened and led the ways. I haven’t read the book nor seen the movie (time for that to change), my favorite EldO is Jasmin et Cigarette and I am in the EU.

  • I love dune, this sounds like one right up my alley. This scent must be perfect to wear for Christmas, I love it. Living in the EU

  • Intriguing that it has been inspired by the movie Dune. I am a rose fan at heart and all the the notes speak to me. Cheers from UK

  • Intriguing that it has been inspired by the movie Dune. I am a rose fan at heart and all the notes speak to me. Cheers from UK

  • I thorouhly enjoyed how Despina was able to navigate the different facets at play here (the history, the importante of Spice, the fiction, the actual fragrance description and how delicious it sounds).

I haven’t tried all État Libre D’Orange fragrances yet, but am a big fan of Jasmin et tabaco, Rien and Malaise).

As a film fanatic I have watched Lynch’s Dune and am looking forward to see what Dennis Villeneuve does with his own adaptation next!

    Thank you,
    Ana

  • Wow, an enticing review to something that appears to be a very complex and inspiring fragrance! I love spices, mysterious notes and a good spicy perfume and if it has a fascinating story, like this one, it becomes even better! I would love to test it! I live in Romania, EU.

  • An intriguing drug spice alters mind and body got me really. All the notes appeal to me Cardamom, Ginger, Pepper, Gingerbread Accord; Cinnamon, Cumin, Turkish Rose, Saffron; Incense, Fir Balsam, Cypriol, Patchouli. Cheers from UK

  • How beautiful this fragrance, in the wonderful review the spices combined with the rose enhance the charm of the perfume, the pachouli, warm and passionate, gives a strong character to this fascinating composition. Everything in the end is harmonious. Very interesting and full of seduction.
    Linda – UE

  • This is incredible! I’m a massive Herbert and Lynch fan and this sounds like exactly what I’m looking for in a spicy rose fragrance. I love the description of the opening transitioning into the velvety rose! I’m in the USA and Dune is always good for a yearly viewing in my household!

  • I loved hearing the intricate way that the notes played out , the review painted a fascinating almost olfactive view of it!

I’m a big dune fan , and re reading it now in anticipation for the newest movie!

My favourite etat libre d’orange is rien intense insence.

    From Ireland / EU.

  • I had the chance to test this perfume and it immediately hit my “want” shelf. I really liked it and I would love to have it in my collection. The review painted it in a golden, almost bronze color and I couldn’t have chosen a better patina for it. I`m in EU, Romania.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Now this is something for me, I promise I won’t overspray so my eyes don’t turn all blue 😀 Spice must flow! Thanks Despina and Etienne!

  • Great review! Noel au Balcon is my favorite scent from them, I haven’t read the novel. I live in Europe.

  • Spice Must Flow got me by surprise. I’m Dune Saga fanboy, and I’ve read all 23 novels (some could argue about the number 20-23) , not all written by Frank Herbert by the way, only the original six .
Spicy roses, with cinnamon and non gourmand sweetness , and with good lasting power. Both the article and the fragrance are exquisite.
Yes I do have favorite Etat Libre d’Orange, it’s called Bijou Romantic.
    I’m so excited.
    USA/France

  • Such a great inspiration for a perfume and yes I have read dune and seen the mini series. Please enter me I love the idea of this spice must flow

  • I have been liking spicy fragrances more, especially those with cardamom, so I am intrigued by this one. The addition of rose definitely makes it appealing. My favorite ELdO fragrance is Putain des Palaces. I live in the USA.

  • This sounds like a lovely holiday scent! Cardamon just mayes me feel good. The picture of the rose is exquisite and I like that it is long-lasting. I do not have a favorite, nor have read the book, but there’s always 2020. I live in the USA.

  • Spices (cardamom) and a soapy rose drydown. This sounds like the most comforting scent ever. My grandmother always smelled like soapy roses (probably from her Ivory soap), while her home was always redolent with spices.
I actually own Dune the movie, and love it. But I think I may be in the minority with that love.
And Etat Libre d’Orange is one of my favorite perfume houses.
This scent ticks all the right boxes for me!
    I am in the US

  • Most of my Dune memories are connected to playing the 1992 computer game of the same name (made by Cryo & Virgin), though I have seen the movie ages ago. The book’s still on the list…

Honestly the best thing about this review was that it made me want to play the game again. But really: The fragrance sounds lovely, too. Wanting to smell like Cinnamon is what got me interested in perfumes in the first place!

Haven’t smelled anything from État Libre d’Orange yet. So no favorites there. And lastly: I’m from Germany.

  • I love the sound of how this fragrance changes from an overload of spices to a soapy rose. I’m also a big fan of cardamom. My favorite line… “feels like taking a relaxing rose petal bath after a day under the blazing sun” has me hooked. I think my favorite would likely be Remarkable People. USA

  • I love both Dune the movie and EldO, my favorite fragance being Fils de dieu and Tom of Finland at the moment. I was very triggered by Despina’s description of this perfume and how it seems like it’s not only a fragrance about a travel, but also a voyage itself, going through the opening with fresh and frizzy spices, to the dry rosey scent, to the Christmassy gingerbread vibe and lastly, dying on skin as a spray of rose water on heated skin or a rose bath. Would love to experience that evolution. I am in the EU. Thanks!

  • I enjoyed the little trip to the history in this review, among other things. I have never tried anything by this brand.
I have read Dune and have loved it, and a fragrance based on it is very exciting!
    I live in Finland, Europe.

  • I own 2 Etat Libre d’Orange frags- 100 ml’s of You Or Someone Like (gift) and Like This – extremely underrated fragrance that always makes me happy . Both I love equally.
I always try to stay up to date with new niche fragrances, but I was not aware of Spice Must Flow.
Classy rose , lots of spices and cardamom is timeless combination I’m eager to try.
I have watched the movie Dune , but have not read the books yet.

My very favorite spices, a definite must-try for me. I have not seen the movie. My favorite ELDO is Remarkable People. USA

  • Interesting review, and this perfume sounds very beautiful and yummy: “vibrant, enveloping spice cloud”, “sprinkles of pepper”, “luminous saffron”, “energizing ginger” and in the end vibrant, enveloping spice cloud: sprinkles of tingly pepper and luminous saffron, as well as generous doses of comforting cardamom and energizing ginger with fir balsam.
I want to test this beauty.
From ELDO I like “I am Trash”, Attaquer Le Soleil Marquis de Sade.

  • Elinor Vasiliou says:

I really liked reading the historical context – sets the scene for the scent beautifully. My favourite ELDO is Divin’ Enfant with all its contradictions! I don’t think I’ve read Dune, or seen it. Perhaps if I’m the winner I’ll give myself the full sensory experience of it! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the UK.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Enjoyed the history lesson on the spice trade in the article. Hope to try this one thanks.

  • This bottle is so beautiful and quite indicative of the fragrance that rests within. The base of the fragrance really comes as a surprise, though, drying down into that unforeseen fresh soapiness. Quite the masterful composition, indeed, it seems. (USA)

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I appreciated about the review was the history lesson along with the movie reference. That along with the note breakdown, causes anticipation to arise, especially since I love my spices. My only experience with Etat Libre d’Orange is I am Trash, which I enjoyed, and I never saw “Dune”. I live In Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • So rose , ginger and cardamom? As a Pastry Chef I always compare fragrances to some kind of food, I can’t help it.
Turkish ginger and rose cake with cardamom is what I was reminded of. Traditionally it should be made with freshly chopped ginger, but it the States people prefer it with glace ginger.
Fat Electrician is my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange. No doubt it’s unique . Combination of vetiver and the cream is done very well. I’m not sure about Must Flow, because I do not know it , but to me Fat Electrician is actual gourmand, and not some semi-sweet fragrance. I mean is more sweet and eatable, than earthy and smoky.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign.

As a huge fan of Dune (the book and the movie) I am more than curious to try this new scent from ELdO, a house that always brings us creative and groundbreaking fragrances. My favorite from the house is La Fin du Monde – love the smell of popcorns…Lisbon Portugal

  • I’ve sampled “I am trash” because of Despina Veneti take on Cafleurebon last autumn, and bought it a week after. My favorite one.
Again because of Lauryn Beer “She Was an Anomaly” review bought a sample, but I’ll wait for the spring to make up my mind. The weather is way too cold for it.
Now I have to check another one. Spice Must Flow I imagine being like a warm pashmina scarf you wear around the neck. Perfect for the colder weather outside .
Thanks to all involved in this giveaway.
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • I liked the way Despina’s description made the fragrance sound both old-fashioned and modern at the same time, as if it has one eye looking to tradition and one eye looking to the future. I like the way it sounds completely unisex and a rose fragrance that guys could wear just as easily as women. That may be because of the reported lack of excess sweetness. I have not tried any Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances, but they always sound inventive and boundary-pushing. I have not read the book DUNE, but I have seen the David Lynch movie. It may not be Lynch’s best work, but any Lynch is worth seeing. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • This one sounds very interesting. Dune is one of my favorite SiFi books. The note list sounds like it is right up my alley. I will definitely try this. My favorite État Libre d’Orange perfume is Rien. Thank you for another great review. Greetings from Austria, EU

  • Okay, this sounds gorgeous and makes me finally want to try something from État Libre (I’ve never smelled anything from their line). I love all those spicy notes.
And yes, I saw the film Dune. Back then, I thought it was a great movie. But I’ve heard the book is SO much better.
    I live in the USA.

  • I loved the details of the spice trade and how it affected history. What ELDO do I love? I own Jasmin et Cigarette, Fils de Dieu, Putain des Palaces, and decants of Like This Tilda Swinton, and Someone Like You. I’m in the US. Thanks!!

  • My heart quickened when reading Despina’s review of Spice Must Flow. I’m also in love with the Dune series of books (although the ones written by Frank Herbert are superior to the later additions) and have great expectations for the movie. Despina did an excellent job of briefly showing the parallels between the history of the spice trade in our world and the rich, imaginative future world as so profoundly depicted by Frank Herbert, which shows that in some ways human nature is unchangeable in its thirst for an ever enlarging reality. The mesmerizing combination of spices, warm cinnamon, and a beautiful unfading rose sounds so engaging, just like the world in Herbert’s novels. Thanks Despina for the review and to Etienne and Etat Libre d’Orange for the generous giveaway. I’m in Oregon, US.

  • What a wonderful by Despina, such detailed review. Defiently can’t wait for the new Dune movie I just hope it’s gonna be a classic like the previous film.

  • I loved reading about the spice trade, I had never heard about it before. I love that État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow lasts for about 8-10 hours before fading. I don’t have any favorite fragrance from État Libre d’Orange and neither have I read nor seen the movie Dune.
    I live in USA.

  • Provocative campaigns , names , slogans or bottles do not move me much. All I care is the smell, and most importantly how it makes me feel.
I will sample “Spice Must Flow ” because of the:
    a) Notes – result intrigues me the most . Rose , cardamom, other spices and some sweetness.
    b) The perfumer . I like Mathilde Bijaoui , Tilda Swinton Like This is a beauty .
    c) Then comes the nice job done by Despina, her review was really good , as usual.

  • Oh my gosh!
This review had both me and my husband so excited to get our hands on this perfume!
We BOTH love the Dune books, movie, all these listed perfume notes and the beautiful presentation. I also own and adore Bijou Romantiqe- but this sounds like it will be even better.

  • gingerbread! but frankly i love all those notes… so i guess spice must flow will become my fav État Libre d’Orange fragrance. and yes i have read dune & seen the movie out here in california

Dune was the book that started me on my love for sci-fi. I was super excited to hear about this perfume. From your review it sounds like everything I had hoped it to be. Thank you for this wonderful review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thanks for beautiful review and draw!
Interesting overview about spices. Very interesting perfume- aromatic extravaganza of spices, energetic ginger, “soapy” rose, smoky incense… I would like to test this perfume of “spice”))
From Etat Libre d’Orange I like Like this, Remarkable People.

  • Wow, it sounds wonderful, I like the idea of spices, rose plus incense.
Perfect for this time , hope I’m able to win this one.

    Thanks.

  • etat libre d’orange is always so innovative. for instance, i love i am trash. i enjoy how despina allows us to travel with words through the fragrance. usa

  • This sounds really good! Love spicy fragrance with a kick! I also love that it turns soapy in the dry down. I enjoyed the was Despina broke down the bote listing. My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange is Rien Intense Incense. I also own and enjoy Fat Electricain. There are still many I have not tried yet from this house. Thank you for the draw! Buffalo, NY, US.

  • In late 2019 how you will promote your products is really important, and I do admit Spice Must Flow backstory is catchy, Dune is a classic scifi movie everyone should see.
“A velvety rose soon emerges amidst this heated, dry spiciness, accompanied by warm, reassuring cinnamon (a possible clin d’œil to “Dune”, where the Spice is described as having a decidedly cinnamon-like taste). At this stage the fragrance shifts towards a no-nonsense, non-gourmand sweetness”
    Ok i’m 100% sold . So comforting…
Remarkable People is my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange, I should have got the 100ml bottle, instead of 50ml.
    Beautiful giveaway, thanks a lot.

  • Great review! I appreciated the two levels of interpretation for the fragrance: the literary one and the historical one. I haven’t read Dune, or seen the movies, as I am not into Sci-Fi, but Despina’s review made me curious about the book. The only État Libre d’Orange fragrance I am familiar with is Putain des Palaces, which I like for its powderiness. Thank you for the draw (from the EU-Romania).

  • An extroverted, long lasting spicy fragrance. Wow. I wasn’t aware this line had anything upcoming. My favorite of the line is “Fin du Monde”. Thanks Despina!

  • I do have the pleasure of smelling Spice Must Flow, and I find the smell of it very similar to Chai Masala – Rose, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom . If you know Chai Masala, you know Spice Must Flow. Fabulous smell, and unlike some other Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances it’s a powerful one, really powerful.
My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange – Remarkable People and You or Someone like You . I’m also curious about the pumpkin one Like This .
Of course I’ve seen Dune . Masterpiece .
Enjoyed the review , and thanks for the draw.

  • I really enjoyed reading Despina’s review of Spice Must Flow as it encouraged me to read up on the silk road and the age of discovery. The bottle itself is a work of art and It reminds me of a star chart. The way in which Despina describes this scent, makes me think that it is a wonderful Christmas fragrance to wear while I eat my own body weight in chocolate and wonder where I will put the 600 pairs of socks my grandma has bought me. In Dune and Twin Peaks, Kyle MacLachlan is brilliant, and I can see why him and David Lynch have such a terrific partnership. I am from the UK.

  • I appreciate the short history lesson on spice. I have read Dune. The epitome of the sci-fi genre imo. I have not smelled any ELDO fragrances but I have been wanting to try this fragrance since it launched.

    I’m in Canada.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • I loved the book and the movie, so I am curious to try the scent. I found the way she wrote about the notes’ integration intriguing. My favorite ELdO is Putain des Palaces. Thank you for the drawing. I live in the United States.

  • What a great idea for a perfume and I love that is rose with cinnamon and gingerbread. I have read Dune and saw the movie but I like the idea that the spice route was also part of this article. Great photos.

Despina, great review of État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow. This fragrance sounds amazing!!! A middle eastern/oriental vibe with the turkish rose and variety of spices that dries down with a beautiful incense, fir balsam, and gingerbread accord. This may be my new favorite from État Libre d’Orange. My previous favorite was Fat Electrician. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie Dune. I am from the USA.

  • “Dune” is one of these books that have had an impact on me. Taking it a reference when making a fragrance is a bold venture.
I liked a part about the history and importance of spices in the history of mankind.
I would love to win this new ELDO fragrance.
    I live in Poland.

  • As a Lynch fan (I have seen Dune several times), I was delighted to read Despina’s review… I would love to try ELDO’s Spice Must flow…

Dang! I love Dune and the day dream that this review took me on was crazy. Thank you for the exquisite write-up Despina. I really liked the way you talked about the development of the scent.

I’ve only smelled Fat Electrician from this house (and I love it!)

    Love from Madison, WI, USA

  • My favourite part of the review was imagining the warm, spicy scent in the context of Arrakis the desert planet… and then being completely shocked at the mention of fir balsam! I had to read that paragraph twice to wrap my head around it.

I don’t know Etat Libre d’Orange but have read lots- I would love to try some but as of yet I don’t have a favourite fragrance from them.

I read Dune as a teen and didn’t much care for the old movie, but I look forward to the new one! Perhaps I will read the book again during a cold week 🙂

  • Excellent review by Despina and I loved the history of spices in Western civilization! This fragrance sounds dreamy and other worldly! I was a HUGE Dune fan and wore it for years and I look forward to wearing this one. My favorite line is: “The sensuous spicy/smoky/rosy experience of État Libre d’Orange Spice Must Flow lasts for a good 8-10 hours, before it slowly fades into an unexpected musky-clean, “soapy” rose that feels like taking a relaxing rose petal bath after a day under the blazing sun.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I love Dune and it’s one of my all time favorites. Reflect on what the story is and a fragrance that is apart of such a cult classic is awesome. Excellent review which has me interested. Thanks for the draw. I live in CA, USA.

The abstract, yet familiar Christmas vibe that Despina has described is what caught my attention right away! Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year… we put up 9 Christmas trees and the front of the house looks like a sophisticated Griswold house, haha! (Or at least I like to think it is sophisticated…) We go all out, needless to say! When I saw this had a gingerbread note and Despina said it was abstract, yet familiar, that just made me want the fragrance even more! Despina’s artwork goes superbly with the bottle, as it always does! She does such a fantastic job putting pictures together for her reviews! Thank you for the great artwork, as always, Despina, and for the awesome review of Spices Must Flow! You have made me add another one to the never-ending list! Thank you Michelyn for putting this all together and thank you to Etienne for your generosity on such a beautifully described fragrance! Good luck to all! I live in Delaware, US.
