DSH Perfumes White Rabbits Review (Heirloom Elixirs #5) + International Women’s Day Draw

Ostara 1884, Johannes Gehrts

SO many white rabbits from which to choose. Artisan and award winning perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz might easily draw any number of them right out of her capacious chapeau (it’s as big as Edward Lear’s famous Quangle Wangle Quee’s beaver hat which was “a hundred and two feet wide, with ribbons and bibbons on every side”!). What Dawn’s White Rabbits are NOT: a) related to Grace Slick; b) derived from John Tenniel’s illustrations of Alice in Wonderland; c) co-conspirators of Bunnicula (who meets Edgar Allan Crow); d) cousins of Rosemary Well’s winsome Max and Ruby. What White Rabbits ARE: mythic archetypal symbols of femininity associated with the lunar cycle, fertility, longevity and rebirth. They are also contrarians and the height of paradox – symbols of both foolishness and cleverness, femininity and androgyny, courage and cowardice, purity and sexuality. Ostara, Celtic goddess of the moon, fertility and Spring is often depicted with a hare’s head or ears and a white hare in attendance. It is this last image I feel most strongly: the heralding of The Eternal Return which is Spring, in whose wake the ancients stood speechless.

DSH Perfumes White Rabbits is a worthy addition to her collection, one you won’t want to miss. White Rabbits opens with an herbal and floral flourish, gloriously arrayed in tones of moss green and wisteria. Tendrils of rose and violet peep through the deliciousness of calendula and carrot peppered with angelica. Calendula has always been a favorite of mine: Weleda, a much-loved German skin care line – has chosen it to grace all their baby products for its therapeutic qualities, but we delight in its fresh-as-a-daisy aroma in the process. DSH Perfumes White Rabbits feels well-suited to the task, blithely companionable amidst a wealth of ionones and varieties of orris: silvery, rhizomal and earthily cool. Egyptian rose geranium contributes a vernal minty-green leafiness which enhances both herbal and rosy aspects; oakmoss, its forest floor undertone melding with grassy vetiver. Both ground us, tenderly drawing us closer to earth’s nascent pulse. Tuberose appears as seamlessly buttery and cooperative – she doesn’t grandstand here. What makes white bunny fur bunny fur? That I choose to leave to Dawn, the perfumer’s prerogative, and the sly versatile vegetal ambrette, a musky chameleon – among other sorcery. The inclusion of choicest sandalwoods feels as intuitive as it does perfect.

Regardless of the weather New England is seeing lots of snow, desperately trying to make up for previously ‘dry’ months). The Eternal Return is closer than we may be feeling. DSH Perfumes White Rabbits Heirloom Elixir No.5 is a marvelous way to usher it in: hopeful, wistful, charmingly with deep affection and a little bunnyfur. Into each life, however hard – may a kiss of softness fall…?

Notes:calendula CO2, carrot CO2, carrot greens accord, angelica, Egyptian rose geranium, Turkish rose otto, tuberose absolute, orris root, orris concrete, wood violet, Sri Lankan vetiver, green oakmoss, Australian sandalwood, Mysore sandalwood, ambrette seed, white bunny fur accord, musk

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – many thanks, Dawn! You knew I’d adore this one. My nose is my own…

You've had me at the herbal/rosy and orris plenitude, dear Ida – but that "white bunny fur accord" makes trying this scent imperative!

Considering how hard it is tovhave access to DSH fragrances in Europe, I'd be ecstatic to win the 6-month subscription.

Thank you for the generous prize, and for the witty, entertaining review.

    I live in EU (France).

P.S. You're absolutely right, Michelyn. Every day should be a fight for the rights  of women all over the world.

  • I love the story behind the making of White Rabbits. Dawn certainly has an artistic and creative mind. I would love to try this fragrance. Thanks for another fabulous draw! USA

  • Happy international women’s day to all the great women perfumers! White rabbit sounds wonderful

Thanks for the generous giveaway, I would love to win the subscription. I live in the U.S.

  • I really enjoyed the freshness that came across in the review. Living in NE Canada, I am more than ready for the fresh air of spring to arrive.

As Dawn's wonderful scents are so difficult to find here, I would prefer the 6 month subscription please.

Thanks to all for the opportunity.

Mmmmm, rabbit fur. I love the concept behind this, and especially the notes chosen (carrots! iris! wood violet! I imagine a little bunny nibbling in the garden)! I'm trying to think spring… This sounds beautiful.

I would choose the 5ml of White Rabbits. Thank you for this generous draw! I'm in the USA.

  • I enjoyed the background given on the symbolism of the white rabbit. Something I've never thought about before. Happy International Women's Day! I live in Singapore.

  • It sounds lovely and fresh and I am very ready for spring this year! I would love the white rabbits  should I win. What a great idea, allowing the rest of us to get up to speed on dsh perfumes! Thank you for the lovely draw

  • I've been reading lately about Ostara… I love that Ida has invoked her for this review of "White Rabbit".  It feels like spring is eons away but reading about Dawn's new Heirloom release makes it feel near. I love the scent of calendula and am so happy to hear it is used in the perfume…. wish it were more common. Can't wait to smell this one! – Marianne

  • Harbinger says:

I love the smell of calendula and I loved this review. DSH has some amazing fragrances. Would love to win the six month Heirloom subscription. Thanks for the draw. I am in the USA

  • Happy International Women's Day!

The story in White Rabbits is fascinating and intrigueing, as are the notes: I think calendula is extremely under-appreciated (I have some calendula co2, it smells beautiful) , and I would love to smell it in a fragrance.

I've been trailing DSH for a while, though I haven't tried any of Dawn's creations yet, and I would love, if I'm lucky, to win a 6-month subscription. Hong Kong/ China

Like Leonard Cohen said, I'm waiting for women to hurry up and and take over. I love reading reviews like this where I can learn new things (here, about the goddess Ostara and the symbolism of white rabbits).

I woukd choose the 5ml mini spray.

    I live in the USA.

  • I really liked the “Alice in Wonderland” / modern fairytale I got from this review…rabbit fur perfume note! That sounds exciting! I would choose the 5 ml sample. From EU, I’d like to wish all women a happy, fulfilling, empowering women’s day!

  • NiceVULady says:

Happy International Women's Day to all the wonderful women out there.  Many thanks to Ida for her amazing review.  She always seems to create such amazing pictures of fragrances and this is no exception.  I love the relation to the goddess Ostara.  Thanks for the generous draw.  I would love the 6 month subscription.  I live in the USA

  • I never saw American Gods, so that was something new that interested me. I live in USA and love Dawn. Hi Dawn!!!! Mwaaaahhhh.

  • I surely agree that this orris is multifaceted, earthy, fresh creamy and just atmospheric. I was lucky to try it and as a fan of oriis root and iris I totally love it. I enjoyed that it is described as NOT Alice in Wonderland bunny… Would love to win the subscription for the next month. I love Dawn’s work and her limited editions. I am in Germany. Thanks

  • Amy Leonhardt says:

I didn’t know about this archetypal symbol. Interesting read. I love calendula, and as far as I know, have only smelled it in the Weleda products. That and orris and carrot notes and sandalwood sound perfect for spring. Would love to try White Rabbits. I’m in CA.

  • The fragrances sounds so amazing and intriguing to say the least. CO2, carrot CO2, carrot greens accord, angelica, Egyptian rose geranium, Turkish Rose Otto as some of the notes. What a artist and interesting composition. This is the fragrance I would love to try. I live in CA, USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I slathered my youngest in Weleda lotion, which we found when seeking a solution for her eczema, and it was so wonderful for her skin.  The calendula aroma was a pleasing bonus.  How clever of Dawn to include carrot and carrot top, to create something different from the run of the mill cool winter winter theme one might expect, but she is always surprising us with interesting new ideas.  If I should win, I would so much love to be enrolled in the subscription program, it would be so exciting to try her new scents as they come available.  Thank you Dawn for your ongoing generosity, we love hearing about your work here.  I live in the US.

  • Happy Women's Day (everyday but especially today!)!

The concept of the Eternal Return has interested me for the longest time, – as I was reading the review I immediately wanted to rewatch the old film of the same name. The perfume itself sounds equally mysterious, so if I'm lucky I'd be happy to receive Heirloom Elixirs subscription and try it. I live in Russia.

  • Belladonna says:

Not entering the drawing – I've got a subsciption to the Heirloom Elixirs (no way I'd miss out on that!)  Just wanted to jump in and say how much I love Ida's review of White Rabbits!  Also Michelyn's art direction – with the inclusion of Ostara (read the book American God's & Kristen looks just how I imagined Ostara to look) is so perfect for the vibe.

  • Damiana Chiavolini says:

I would love to win the 5 ml mini spray sample of White Rabbit. I recently tried the sample and loved the combination of carrot with calendula and angelica.I live in Dallas, TX.

  • White bunny fur accord? I would love to see what that smells like! This sounds like such a cozy, beautiful fragrance!

I would love to win the Heirloom Elixirs Subscription.

  • RoseMacaroon says:

This sounds so lovely. For some reason the list of notes really corresponds with sort of literary quality that a white rabbit would encapsulate: the cool sweet earthy rhizome-y, floral and carroty profile. It sounds so sweely nutritious, like baby spring vegetable stew with the lightest fresh herb garnish, like you can only find the precisely rigjt ingredients for in very early spring. Thank you for the lovely review, it's just a beautiful read.

  • I do love Dawn's creations so it would be amazing to win this! White Rabbit sounds to me of spring – and the addition of those fleeting ionones is what does it…..and bunny fur? That makes me think of the silky muskiness of my kitty cats soft soft fur. Somehow feral but also comforting and that baby soft ultra-fine fluff is something I can't ever get enough of – they are just so wonderful to pat.

I would love to win the subscription! I am in Melbourne Australia

  • Monica Beaton says:

I have days when I identify strongly with the mad hatter, and others when I'm running around like a crazy white bunny. I love your writing Ida – and the addition of beautiful art from Michelyn brings Dawn's fragrances to life. White bunny fur accord – I can't honestly say I can ever recall sniffing a white bunny, but what a fun (and furry) addition to a fresh and floral scent. I would love to win the subscription and live in Australia.

  • Such a poetic review. I must say that all the carrot notes made me chuckle.

I would absolutely love the chance to try the DSH subscription!

Happy women's day! Let's make it last all year!

Great review! I would love to win the subscription! Wish you all a Happy women's day! White rabbit is a really creative name and also the notes are very interesting especially the carrots. From Austria

Happy belated Women's Day , although I think each day should be special and celebrated like one !
Dawn never fails to surprise and amaze me with her creations.
The name "White Rabbits" is a wonderful idea. I love the fact that there is a story: Ostara, the goddess of the Moon, fertility and spring with a white hare.
I don't think I've encountered calendula in perfume before. In our region it's used as a component in creams for it's high regerative properties.
Thank you for a lovely read Ida !
I'd love the chance of trying Dawn's creations offered in a subscription !
    I'm in Romania.
