DSH Perfumes Royal Grey Cologne Review (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) + Everything Stops for Tea Draw

DSH Perfumes Royal Grey Cologne Review

“Wouldn’t it be dreadful to live in a country where they didn’t have tea?” asked Noel Coward, apparently aghast at the idea. As a tea lover, I wholeheartedly agree. It’s not just the comforting cuppa that starts my day that I’d miss, but the endless variety of aromas tea leaves and their brews impart: the delicate, lychee perfume of Shui Xian Oolong, the malty, dark chocolate of Assam, the smoky dried bark smell of Lapsang Souchong. And then, of course, there’s the quintessentially English Earl Grey, whose distinctive bergamot note summons daydreams of emerald lawns, fine china and elegant silver tea service. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s new summer scent, Royal Grey Cologne, is a multidimensional take on that celebrated beverage. The result is a delightful, aromatic sparkler, both playful and sophisticated, that will have you pining for misty English gardens and plates of scones.

Best all natural fragrances

Royal Grey Cologne is an all-botanical fragrance made with no less than four different teas. Using these variations on a theme notes gives Royal Grey a complexity a straight-up black tea fragrance might lack. “I think that tea is a rather difficult note to get right” says Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. It’s something that many are really familiar with and with that notion of it being an ‘every-day’ kind of thing, it might be easy to compose with. But it’s very easy to make either thin, flat accords or ones that don’t really have the correct tannin/floral /earthy relationship.” To create dimension and balance, she created a black tea accord with black tea absolute and co2 and combined it with a strong infusion of earl grey tea, green tea absolute, and green tea co2 before marrying it with florals, brilliant, bitter citrus and woody notes.

A tea purveyor’s calling card, c.1770

Royal Grey opens with a life-like, bright burst of bergamot that is flowery, bitter, juicy all at once. Tea rises like steam behind it, stretching out in different directions: astringent, pungent, anisic, nutty. The black tea notes dominate well into the middle section, when the grassy smokiness of green gunpowder tea comes through. Sandalwood intensifies as Royal Grey develops, as the middle section takes on woody, earthy aspects. As it leans into the dry-down, a sweet herbal note wends its way through. Yerba mate, along with milky vanilla and some understated rose, segues Royal Grey from morning rouser to afternoon cream tea.

DSH Perfumes Royal Grey Cologne is more complex than a typical summer cologne, which should appeal to those looking for something a bit different from the many light tea scents on the market, but bright and sparkling enough feel refreshing and easy. Royal Grey is both bracing and calming, perfectly pitched for a lazy day in the heat. Breathing it afresh, it makes me long for the shade of a huge chestnut tree, Henry James in hand, while tea seeps nearby on the terrace. Now, please pass the clotted cream.

Notes: Earl Grey natural (Accord), Earl Grey tea infusion, ruh khus, ambrette seed, Australian sandalwood, vanilla absolute, black tea, Bulgarian rose otto, damask rose absolute, green tea absolute, gunpowder green (botanical accord), patchouli co2, yerba maté absolute, bergamot.

  • Fabulous review! Just love Dawn’s creativity.
    Here’s my favorite part.

I live in the USA, thanks for the generous giveaway!
Right now my favorites from Dawn are Avocado Toast And Sharkskin.

  • Absolutely love earl grey tea! Thanks for your suggestion of Tung Ting, cute name. I enjoy Dawn’s creativity in perfumery and would love to try Royal Grey. Thanks for the opportunity! USA

I’ve heard so much about DSH and Royal Grey Cologne sounds amazing. I love Earl Grey (and Earl Grey Creme is my fav brew) but can’t imagine it against a cologne structure. This sounds like a lovely scent for my home of New York City in the summer. Henry James on the terrace? YES PLEASE.

I love this review! Pass the clotted cream indeed! A lovely scene is painted at the end. Please sign me up for that!!! I love a good white tip earl grey… thank you for the generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • I dont have any tea scents and this one sounds so complex with the different teas as well as the notes, I’d love it to be my first tea scent. I drink tea sometimes more coffee but on occasion a tea called yogi bedtime tea to help sleep. I dont have any DSH perfumes either so would love to try this. In the USA. Thanks

  • I was thoroughly impressed by the different transformations and inclusions of the beloved tea in this fragrance. The journey this read took me on makes my pallet long for an experimentation with a variety of different tea flavors in the morning. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • I love tea-scented fragrances. And Earl Gray is one of my favorite teas. I’ve always wanted to smell a DSH perfume, but I’m sad to say I never have. Maybe I’ll win the draw and get to try this one! I live in the USA. Thanks, as always for the draw.

I think at this perfume as one very refreshing, light and easy for the summer heat. I think I would like it, because I love the tea scent on my skin. My only tea scent perfume is herba fresca and I would like to try DSH Royal Grey COlogne.

  • Sounds like a lovely perfume. I thoroughly enjoy “gourmand” perfumes which are not necessarily so in terms of sweetness nor have a bakery dimension. In my opinion, an Earl Grey inspired fragrance is perfectly classified as a summer gourmand. I like that Dawn decided to go for this in order to compose a summer perfume, rather than the basic citrus (floral). Would love to sample it, since my favorite tea blend does happen to be Earl Grey, though I also enjoy jasmine green tea. I don’t have a favorite DSH perfume, because I never sampled them. Thanks for the article and the draw!

  • Absolutely love tea fragrances, interesting to see where DSH are heading with this one! Would love to try, thanks for the opportunity. Living in Europe

  • I am not a huge tea drinker, but truly appreciate tea fragrances. This one seems to be sparkling, bright, beautiful and I would be thrilled to try it. I am very curious to test the Earl Grey natural accord. I am quite familiar with Dawn’s fragrances and I am especially fond of her animalic creations, Foxy in particular. I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for another great review, Lauryn! I love tea scents and this one sounds beautiful and complex at the same time. This part of your description is what I love – ‘Royal Grey is both bracing and calming, perfectly pitched for a lazy day in the heat.’ I’d love to get my nose on this. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

DSH Perfumes Royal Grey Cologne sounds like a great summer tea fragrance with the depth and complexity I am looking for. It has a good blend of tea, floral, citrus, and woody notes. I don’t have a favorite DSH fragrance. I am a tea drinker. My favorite tea would be Chai…I just love all the spices. I am from the USA.

  • Beautiful review as always, Lauryn! I appreciate that Dawn has explored the possibilities of making a tea-centric scent that has more than a simple resemblance to a beloved beverage. I’m a devoted tea drinker, and Royal Grey Cologne seems like a perfect perfume to get acquainted with DSH’s impressive line.

  • I don’t own any tea fragrances, maybe because they have not been complex enough. This sounds amazing with the variety of different tea notes. “Bright and Sparkly” seems perfect for the season now and into fall. I am a tea drinker, I love Mariage Freres Wedding blend and anything from Charleston Tea Plantation (very cool that it is the only tea farm in the US). I have never smelled anything from DSH before, but always hear good things about them. USA.

  • This sounds like such a gentle, calming scent. I don’t own any tea-based fragrances. I do love the smell of earl grey tea!

  • strangedim says:

I am a tea lover. My body can’t take black tea, but I do love its smell and taste, and earl grey I sniff every time I go in a tea shop. I can not imagine starting a day without a cup of green tea (I tried, I am not myself), but my thoughts keep going back to a cup of Pai Mu Tan White tea I had years ago (so delicate it can change the world), so let’s say that’s my best-loved brew. My favourite note in a fragrance is tea (especially green tea), so imagine my eyes getting bigger and bigger when I saw the title of the link posted on Cafleurebon facebook page (although I never had the chance to try any DSH creation). I enjoyed every word as I enjoy every sip of a tea cup, but being in the beginning of an extremely busy period, I was hooked by “perfectly pitched for a lazy day in the heat”. So due to Lauryn’s great review, this complex, yet comforting Royal Grey Cologne went straight to the first position on ‘I need it now’ list. Thank you!

Thank you for the great review. Sounds like a really nice scent. I drink earl grey tea nearly everyday. I havent tried any DSH perfumes yet, but would love to sample some. Thank you for the chance of winning one. Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • This fragrance sounds great with the balance of sour and dark notes. I love these fabric like smelling fragrances, like this one might be. Black tea is one of my favorite notes. I have never tried DSH and would love too. Hibiscus and rose is my favorite tea so far. Comforting and rejuvenating. USA resident

I am registered and would love a Entry !

  • Wow, what the amazing bunch of ingredients. I like rose and tea combination in the scents and this blend looks really complex and amazing, I’d love to try. I live in Poland.

  • It’s appealing since I love tea notes (eg Silver Mountain Water, a number of Bvlgari scents, Declaration Essence etc). It can be fresh, dark, earthy, floral. Plus the different kinds of teas sounds like a really good dynamic.
I mostly get some loose leaf ones from a store nearby. Not sure where they’re from. I also steep some cheap ones to flavor water I’ll drink during the day.
I havent tried any from DSH.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

Four different kinds of teas- black, earl grey, yerba maté, and gunpowder green? Sign me right up please! I adore tea fragrances and a significant percentage of the fragrances in my collection contain a tea note. Lauryn makes this sound much more sophisticated, complex, and multidimensional than a standard single-note tea fragrance, perfect for a relaxing day in hot weather, or to use the soothing properties of the fragrance to calm down during a moment of stress. The development from bitter yet citrusy-floral bergamot to strong black tea to green smokiness to woodsy and earthy tones sounds fascinating without being distracting or overwhelming. Overall it sounds like an incredible fragrance, one that I would absolutely love to try and that would be my first from DSH. My favorite kinds of tea are French Breakfast, a creamy vanilla blue tea from Mariage Frères, and vanilla-infused oolong from David’s Tea. I will have to look into the Tung Ting and Shui Xian oolongs as well, they sound wonderful! I am in the US 🙂

  • I haven’t found a tea scent that was for me yet, but I’m loving the hunt! Royal Grey Cologne sounds so different from anything I’ve tried. DSH perfumes are exquisite and so unique! My favorite DSH fragrance is La Reine des Fleurs. I love to wear it sipping Jasmine Green Tea. 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! In the USA

  • NiceVULady says:

I have many DSH favorites and it would be very hard to pick just one. This sounds like something truly terrific for the summer. Marrying the tea notes with citrus and rose sounds perfect. My favorite tea is Lapsang Souchong. Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • doveskylark says:

As a tea drinker, I would love to try this fragrance. It’s amazing that there are three tea accords in Royal Grey. I love to drink Chinese teas like Yunnan and Keemun. I don’t consume milk and I find these teas are perfect straight up.
My favourite DSH perfume is Lilas de Minuit.
    I live in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I don’t think I’ve smelled a tea fragrance quite like the one described here. This sounds much meatier than what I’m used to. The use of CO2 in the composition of the tea scents is new to me and quite interesting. The idea of the scent being both bracing and calming describes how I feel about a good black tea. I’m a big tea drinker in the colder months and tend to stick to herbals but I do love a good chai in the mornings. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Royal Grey Cologne sounds excellent! As a huge tea lover I agree that it is almost impossible to compose a good tea in perfume format, taking into account its refreshing, tanine, green/black, earthy, zingy elements. My favorite tea is Oolong, but i mostly drink Earl Gray with a slice of lemon. Would love to try this perfume!
    Thank you for the draw!

  • This fragrance sounds very nice. Yes, I’m a tea drinker. My favorite tea is green tea with ginger. Thanks for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I do love Earl Grey tea; so I think I would love a fragrance that smells like that. I also love English and Irish Breakfast teas. My new fave DSH is Colorado. Swoon. In USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I’m not a huge tea drinker but I love tea scents and I know Dawn must have created a wonderful one! I love how she added rose and Yerba mate. My favorite DSH scent is Zeitgeist and my favorite tea is Chai Karak (a spicy cardamom chai found in the Middle East). Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Such a great review . Anything I own or smelled from Dsh is amazing.
The description of combination of tea accords and sandalwood seems to be very interesting. I’d love to try it.

  • Royal Grey Cologne sounds perfect for a hot summer as we have now in Romania. Just what you need for a refreshing and easy feel. I haven’t tried any DSH perfume yet. My favourite tea is Lady Grey.

  • Ionela Bulimej says:

I don’t know much about DSH but I would love to try it.I like the association with :”perfectly pitched for a lazy day in the heat. Breathing it afresh, it makes me long for the shade of a huge chestnut tree”.

  • Spectacular review by Lauryn. I liked how her review explains that Royal Grey is not your light summer fragrance but yet bright and sparkly. I have not tried any fragrance from DSH. Best loved brew is White Tea. I live in USA.

  • Lisa F Collins says:

The scent of black and gunpowder tea is much more interesting than all the green tea fresh summer scents I’ve tried. I do not currently have a favorite DSH perfume, but this one sounds like it might be the ticket. My favorite brews are blackberry sage by Tea Republic and English Breakfast by Harney and Sons.

  • peppermoon says:

Royal Grey sounds perfect for this time of year, with the end of summer and transition into fall. The amount of tea in the scent appeals to me; Earl Grey natural accord, Earl Grey tea infusion, black tea, green tea absolute, gunpowder green and yerba maté absolute! I’ve recently switched from drinking a morning coffee to drinking Lady Grey tea (Earl Grey with lemon and orange rinds) with a splash of cream. It smells lovely – oftentimes I’ll add a little dash of star anise as well. USA

  • My favorite part of the review was the introduction, because I love tea also! My current favorite is Harvey and Sons’ Tower of London Blend. I would be so excited to win this perfume!

  • This would be the first time I would try a tea based fragrance, so I hope I win this sample. The combination sounds classic and delicious. I never tried any DSH perfumes and I enjoy ginger infusion tea. Thanks for the draw!
