DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) Review (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) + Golden Iris Draw

This perfume came in a dream. Sometimes that’s how it happens…”

In slumber, a golden iris, one that sparkles as if gilded at the edges and illuminated from within, is every bit as possible as the silvery purple flower that glories in late spring gardens. Dawn Spencer Hurwitz dreamed such an iris: lyrically lovely as a flower sonnet, fashioned of velvet and silk, sparkling like a giddy topaz but breathing its ethereal perfume as if dancing to the breeze just outside the bedroom window.

DSH Perfumes Golden Iris, (now titled L’Or (ris)) from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, is an irresistibly gorgeous, jewel-like fragrance, and the the second in a trilogy of iris perfumes (The first, Iris Tuxedo, was reviewed by Senior Editor Ida Meister.). As she relates on her website, the fragrance came to Spencer Hurwitz as she lay asleep: “The sparkling, golden iris floats, fluttering both silk and velvet, emitting its beautifully creamy, powdery, floral and yes, enigmatic, perfume. This was my dream. I awoke with this lovely fragrance still in my nose and in my consciousness. The next day I began painting the golden iris and sketching the fragrance. L’Or(ris) is the dreamy, golden orris perfume.”

I’ve never before encountered an iris that twinkled as it left the bottle, but DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) begins like the ending of those poignant fireworks that glitter brightly at their last moments of falling. There’s a tickly sensation as aldehydes begin to fizzle and a grapey-metallic prosecco note bounces and pings before settling into some downy iris and dark purple violet.

The flowers intensify while the fizz quiets down as L’Or(ris) spreads out. A vein of bitter chocolate trickles through briefly, followed by milky, verdant jasmine, the candied delicacy of angelica, and another helping of iris, with touches of rice powder and that characteristic French pastry dough sweetness that this flower always has for me. Cooler now, L’Or (ris) turns platinum and beams.

For hours, I sit with this iris. It makes me smile as I watch the rain.

Later still, creamy, smoothed sandalwood warms everything back up. There’s a subtle fruitiness I hadn’t noticed before, possibly from ambrette seed, and fluffy pink rose joins the mix. Rose is such a natural optimist that the iris seems quite chipper once more. I do get that metallic tang from the opening again, but it is less pronounced. Wood notes fill in the fragrance with quiet warmth, and  glows like rose gold now.

There are many beautiful iris perfumes out there. But most are chilly affairs, flowers for the wistful, the soulful, the silent.  DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) bubbles and gleams with such infectious joie de vivre that even in these bleak hours, it feels like it was made for dancing under a beneficent sky. One of my favourite florals from the ever-lovely Dawn Spencer Hurwitz.

  • Everything appeals to me! I love the sound of a sparkling iris with Angelica and a chilled prosecco accord. Iris is usually chilly to me so this sounds incredible. I am in the UK

  • This sounds lovely. I tend to like Iris fragrances but with fizzy aldehydes and hint of chocolate with jasmine note is very appealing to me. I’m based in the US.

this sounds AMAZING, the aldehylic sparkling prosecco notes leading up to fluffy iris and violet sounds like A dream! I’m especially looking forwards to enjoying an iris based perfume that isn’t serious or chilly but vivid and fun!

  • I have yet to try any of Dawn’s Creations but the multiple pieces about her work are very appealing and ethereal. L’Or (Iris) being my favorite review thus far – the description of sparkling Iris and the notes of aldehydes and ambergris sound like a metallic fish. It immediately reminded me of a children’s book my mother used to read where a rainbow fish gave up its very special metallic scales to all of his friends.
I would really love to experience this fragrance in all if it’s glory.

  • I love iris and I’m always interested in trying a new interpretation. My favorite iris fragrance, SL Iris Silver Mist, would be considered cool and austere. I always see purple when I think of irises but the golden iris is certainly lovely. I appreciate the warmth in the form of sandalwood and bitter chocolate as well as the prosecco note DSH brings to this composition. Commenting from MD, USA.

Lovely read, this perfume sounds exceptionally appealing. The prosecco note and dark purple violet is not a description of a perfume I’ve heard before! Leave it to the magical perfumer DSH to dream that up, literally! Love that you used an Iris Van Herpen image of an Iris-looking dress for this article on a Iris perfume, very meta!

  • This sounds divine to me and with many accords I’d be fascinated to see how they are present in a scent.
A sparkling chilled iris? That is temptation incarnate.

    I’m from Ireland

  • Oh my, does this perfumer ever create something that doesn’t sound divine? An iris perfume that glows like embers on the skin is what I crave, and that dark purple hint of violet is what makes it extra appealing to me.
Thanks for the chance. Greetings from London, UK x

  • Pixiedust2 says:

The rice powder and the mention of pastry dough really stuck out to me in Lauryn’s review. This fragrance sounds sparkly and delicious! I have quite a few samples from DSH and I’m trying to whittle down my list for a full bottle purchase. She really has an incredible talent and I love that she can recreate the scents she dreams about! I’m in the USA.

  • blombergskan says:

An iris that bubbles and gleams sounds just lovely! I would love me some joie de vivre right now, in this bleak and rainy summer with so many questions about the future. Olfactory optimism is just what I need and crave! Living in Sweden.

A beautiful description by Ida. I am intrigued by cacophony of notes especially ambrette and galub attar. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • What sppesls to me about L’Or(ris) is how Lauryn mentioned the parkly bubbly opening and then the iris and violet followed by the sandalwood warming base with a fruity touch. It just sound really unique and like a great experience. Im in the U.S. thanks for the great review and generous draw.

  • DSH is my ultimate favorite. So is iris. After reading this review I have an impression it’s an optimistic iris which appeals to me. Thanks I am in Germany

  • I love the idea of an iris that makes you smile as you watch the rain. This sounds beautiful. I’m in Australia.

A beautifully golden and warm iris fragrance found in a dream…how can one pass up such a miracle? There are so many DSH fragrances that I love – I can’t choose a favorite – but this one may go to the top of the list. Lovely review Dawn – and thank you fro such a generous giveaway. I live in Australia.

  • lindseyl1985 says:

This sounds beautiful! I find iris to be a somber affair in perfumery, beautiful somehow distant. An iris that dances and warms and has those hints of gourmand sounds like a wonderfully creative change.
    From NY.

  • I loved the sense of intimacy that transpired through Lauryn’s review, as well as the description of this gleaming, beautiful, calm and transparent perfume. I was especially intrigued by the prosecco vibe followed by hints of chocolate, flowers and sandalwood. I am in the EU and would love to try L’Or(ris).

  • A fizzy prosecco with chocolate iris? I’m listening! Dawn’s creativity is amazing. I enjoyed reading about her inspirations for her perfumes. If lucky, edp please. Mich USA

  • Love iris, and want to experience this one. The prosecco note is new to me. Not sure I’ve smelled many iris scents with a aldehydes. US

  • A fantastic draw, thank you for your impression.
I love iris scents, especially to experience the differences.
    A lovlely greet from EU

  • After reading Lauryn’s article, L’or {iris} sounds appealing with it’s sparkiling Orris, “There are many beautiful iris perfumes out there. But most are chilly affairs, flowers for the wistful, the soulful, the silent. DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) bubbles and gleams with such infectious joie de vivre that even in these bleak hours, it feels like it was made for dancing under a beneficent sky. ” Love this!USA

  • THIS sounds like an iris fragrance I could really love! “Twinkles as it leaves the bottle”…”bubbles and gleams with such infectious joie de vivre that even in these bleak hours, it feels like it was made for dancing under a beneficent sky”…perhaps this is the elusive fragrance of my own dreams. Lauryn, I am completely won over by your description!

  • I love iris and this sounds so dreamy. I feel relaxed just reading this review. I would love to try it the scent of a french pastry and a rice note sounds delicious. I am in U.K.

  • This fragrance sounds very interesting and nice. I would very like to try it. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Such a joyful Iris fragrance is very attractive to me, as I usually relate Iris to more melancholic and / or introvert perfumes, such as Après l’Ondée or Iris Silver Mist.
I very much miss Marron Chic by Nez à Nez (Stéphane Humbert Lucas), sadly discontinued. It had a lovely iris – cocoa combination.
So I would be delighted to get a chance to discover L’Or (ris) and rejoice in its bubbling Joie de Vivre!
Thank you for the draw and greetings from Newfoundland, Canada, where I live!

  • I really love orris perfumes, but often they are associated with powdery more old fashioned scents. This sounds elegant and modern, the bitter chocolate note describes by Lauryn intrigues me and I’m curious to smell the fizzy prosecco accord in relation to the Iris. Also I have heard so much about Dawn’s perfumes, I would love to try one of her creations! Marit, UK

  • I never thought of iris as a cold flower in real life. It always peeks out, brightening the spring and I love its cheery and beautiful indigo and gold. This review definitely sounds like the way I would interpret an iris so I’d love to give it a try. I live in the USA; thanks for the giveaway!

  • I enjoy aldehydes (especially because they give a fizziness) in fragrances so this is definitely something I would like to try. Lauryn’s description of French pastry dough makes me even more interested. Would love to have this. From NJ, USA.

  • Lauryn, what a phenomenal review of this scent. Dawn makes her scents come alive and you have done this justice, I’m craving this now!

I almost always attend Dawn’s livestreams, and though Iris/Orris usually does not agree with me, her Iris trio intrigues me and sounds wonderful.

Your descriptions are delicious and vivid and I think your description of the last fizzing sparkles of fireworks is probably the most apt description you could use, it’s such an amazing and powerful visual.

    I’m in the US.

  • What appeals to me the most about this fragrance us the ambergris. I will never say no to ambergris haha! USA

  • Elizabeth T. says:

You always have my complete attention with any iris perfumes you write about! I love the work of DSH, and the creativity with which she infuses everything! (Such as a chilled Prosecco accord!) The orris and iris accord are always among my favorite. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and for the ever generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I love this part in the review best: “For hours, I sit with this iris. It makes me smile as I watch the rain.” Only sitting and enjoying a scent, I have this sensation with Tubereuse criminelle from Serge Lutens. Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • This sounds like such a complex fragrance, at times cool, then warm. I don’t think I ever tried a fragrance with both iris and chocolate notes.
    I live in Europe

  • Tambri Lawless says:

I love chilly iris but am intrigued by thIs description of velvet, silk and joy. And the combinations of the notes! I’m in the U.S.

  • She even dreams fragrances–no wonder she is so prolific!!! I like the sound of this sparkling iris with a warm, creamy drydown. Thank you for the review, I’ll have to add this one to my sample list. I’m in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I agree with Lauryn that many iris fragrances are chilly and a bit wistful. L’Or sounds very sparkling. I love that it has twinkling qualities. The sandalwood and rose note sound so cheerful and optimistic. This perfume sounds like another winner from DSH.
    I live in the USA.

  • My girlfriend loves it when I wear Iris fragrances, but if I can combine this with the chocolate and jasmine she’ll love it even more. Amazing review. This fragrance sounds amazing.

    I live in the UK.

  • Favorite sentence: “There are many beautiful iris perfumes out there. But most are chilly affairs, flowers for the wistful, the soulful, the silent. DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) bubbles and gleams with such infectious joie de vivre that even in these bleak hours, it feels like it was made for dancing under a beneficent sky.”

That’s the kind of iris perfume I keep hoping to find! Also LOVE the photo of the Iris van Herpen dress, she is such a phenomenon.

I would love to try this and see if it changes my mind about iris! In Canada. Thank you for the review!

  • Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING with iris in it gets my undivided attention :).
    I am in EU.

  • My favorite part of this review was the comparison of this fragrance to jewelry. I’m very curious about the prosecco accord here and I’m happy to see another DSH creation being featured. I am in the USA.

  • Rose, sandalwood, iris, what a heady combination. Enjoyed Lauryn’s review of L’orris plus the beautiful pictures accompanying the review. Some day I hope to try DSH perfumes, as they feature so prominently on Cafleurebon. Perfect perfume for gloomy times. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • patrick_348 says:

By specifying prosecco to chocolate to French pastry dough, Lauryn’s review has multisensory appeal. And any fragrance that evokes William Carols Williams has to be a winner! I live in the US, in North Carolina.

” DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) bubbles and gleams with such infectious joie de vivre that even in these bleak hours, it feels like it was made for dancing under a beneficent sky. ” What a description!! It sounds divine. Many thanks for Lauryn’s great review and many thanks to DSH for her generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Four hous of Iris and then sandalwool? I want it so bad! I am always amazed by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, so many perfumes, many of them totally different from each other… she is basically a workaholic artist! I live in Romania

Thank you for the great review Lauryn,

Just reading this review makes me wish for cloudy skies and a cool drizzle, so that I can sit in my garden, amongst the irises and smell this bottle.

I really love how you describe the opening of the scent – “ut DSH Perfumes L’Or (ris) begins like the ending of those poignant fireworks that glitter brightly at their last moments of falling. There’s a tickly sensation as aldehydes begin to fizzle and a grapey-metallic prosecco note bounces and pings before settling into some downy iris and dark purple violet.”

I’ve been waiting to try a Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s perfume.
What appeals from the review of the golden iris is the thought of, smiling through the rain, while waiting to dance under beneficent skies. The image of the cerulean blue iris, courtesy of William Carlos Williams, sums the review up nicely. I’m in Canada.

  • Hi! I love Dawn’s irises and L’Or(ris) appeals to me due to the mention in the review of dark violet and angelica notes.

    I live in the USA.
