My colleagues Ida Meister, Karl Topham,Ermano Picco and I spent four jam packed days of discoveries, surprises and reunions at Esxence 2022. I had scrupulously prepared a list of brands to visit, but the show was so large I was unable to stop by all the booths. Fortunately, the unexpected is always welcome: aware of my mad love for tuberose, dear Deputy and Natural Perfumery Editor Ida Meister wanted to introduce me to a brand that was presenting a perfume preview, the third fragrance in a collection exclusively devoted to this mythical flower of the perfumery. Our schedule had been very busy; it was finally the last day that we visited Cristian Cavagna, the creative director of “La Tuberosa Seconda Me” (The tuberose according to me).

My gaze was immediately drawn to the Art Deco-style bottles and my nose was captivated by a cocktail of divine raw materials, from which tuberose reigned supreme.  When I met Cristian Cavagna, I knew immediately by his style, his eyes and his mellifluous Italian that he was a born artist. He founded Adjumi in 2005 (an fragrant entity he completely redesigned in 2020 and which he also presented at Esxence 2022).  The new Christian Cavagna brand is centered around tuberose in all its facets  and will includes seven fragrances. To  compose the fragrances he called on Arturetto Landi (Mane), his mentor and friend for many years.

Musa Paradisiaca, Boa Madre and Murice Imperiale are the first three creations in this collection. Cristian Cavagna Musa Paradisiaca (the botanical name of the banana tree) is an incredibly lavish tuberose, with green and luminous facets that seem straight out of the tropics. The top notes of this fragrance (tuberose and banana leaf) are common throughout the collection. Cristian Cavagna Boa Madre is adorned with woody, leathery and animal notes of a very “couture” sensuality. I love these two fragrances which launched in 2021 and I hope to share more about them in the future.

Murice Imperiale Cristian Cavagna

Cristian Cavagna quote on Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale – Background ©Pixabay, collage ©Emmanuelle Varron.

Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale (Imperial Murex) is a tribute to the underwater world and the murex mollusk. It’s royal purple color was used in Mediterranean antiquity to dye fabrics dedicated to the gods and the ruling classes, the Imperatores having the privilege to wear all purple clothes, known as Tyrian red. Today, it is still used for the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches cardinals’ vestments. In Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale, this noble color is symbolized by the rhubarb that is a top note in the perfume.

Returning to the world under the sea water: sometimes a fragrance’s “official storytelling” does not speak to me.. That is not the case here. I immediately identify with the mermaid conceptualized by Cristian Cavagna and can imagine her taking care of tuberoses fields cultivated in the depths of the ocean. From the opening, I easily identify the tuberose-banana leaf duo present in the two previous fragrances. Instantaneously, like a wave with a delicate but endless rhythm, the mineral and aqueous facets of Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale is revealed… and astonishes. Closing my eyes, I see (and smell) the red algae dancing to the rhythm of the water current that reveals powerful moist notes blending with a heady, camphorated tuberose. A contrast that never fades but gradually takes on a more earthy character, like a murex stranded on a beach of grainy wet salted sand, reminiscent of the delicious petrichor that can be smelled in the woods after a diluvium storm and at its heart, a tuberose with a straight stem and delicately curved and velvety petals. This rare duality does not weaken on my skin and is reinforced by the ambergris which offers more breadth to the (sub)marine and camphorous character of Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale, adorning itself in leathery, juicy rhubarb and the lightly tarry saffron that is woven throughout the perfume.

Identifying with a perfume… Thanks to AI, my face replaced the one painted in 1900 by John William Waterhouse for “A Mermaid” – via Reface.

The longevity of this perfume extrait is exceptional, and the projection outstanding. Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale is a tuberose perfume that will delight lovers of the ‘Queen of Forbidden Pleasure” and who are always looking for a new interpretation featuring their favorite flower.  What better perfume for a mermaid? An amazing fragrance, one of my most beautiful discoveries of Esxence 2022 and “Best of Show Top 10“, which makes me impatient to discover Cristian Cavagna and Arturetto Landi last four creations that will complete “La Tuberosa Seconda Me” sublime collection.

Natasha Gro is an Lithuanian artist

A true artist, Cristian Cavagna oversees all visual interpretation of his perfumes. For Murice Imperiale, it is Natasha Gro, a Lithuanian-born  designer, who illustrated the features of a mermaid with seductive lips and long gloves, enclosing a tuberose against an Art -Deco inspired murex.

Notes for: banana leaves, saffron, rhubarb, tuberose, coral, petrichor, tuberose absolute, red seaweed absolute, sea musk, ambergris.

Disclaimer: A huge “grazie mille” to Cristian Cavagna for the Murice Imperiale tester and Musa Paradisiaca and Boa Madre samples provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Emmanuel’s description of Murice Imperiale highlights its rare duality. As a marine ecologist (and Pisces) this mermaid-inspired perfume speaks to my soul. Based in the UK.

  • A tribute to the underwater world and the murex mollusk…. That’s what sparked my interest! I’m wondering how mermaids smell…I live in Greece (EU).

  • PetaloDiCera says:

I’d love to meet this dreamy mermaid that Emmanuelle followed wandering under the sea..
Love everything about Cristian Cavagna <3
    I live in Italy, EU.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a combination of notes! I don’t have a vast experience with tuberose, but I am fascinated by what I have smelled, and I love the storytelling that accompanies this perfume. It sounds so gorgeous and I’d love to smell it. Thank you for this review and this generous giveaway!

  • I am intrigued by Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale based on Emmanuelle’s review, especially where she talks about the leafy and seaweed (algae) notes in this perfume. I am sure this perfume is elegant, worthy to be worn by a mermaid. Not sure what sea musk smell like, so that is another draw for me. All in all, looking at the listed notes it seems to be a unique perfume that I am interested in checking out. Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

  • I agree that the bottle reminds us of classic bottles. It is, indeed, art deco-style and I particularly thought of older coty labels and carons bottles when I saw the bottle for Cristian Cavagna Murice Imperiale . It focuses on tuberose but it also employs banana leaf note and i have a feeling that the composition also pays a nod to oriental-fruity perfumes of the past. I am in the US.

  • When you think you’ve seen it all… then appears this fragrance! Notes of coral, petrichor, red seaweed. I really want to try Murice Imperiale!
    Thank you!!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I am a huge fan of actual tuberose flowers and love when the flower’s unexpected facets (wintergreen, meat) are emphasized in a scent, so I’d love to try this and see what aspects of tuberose the marine type notes provide. I also appreciate the brand’s devotion to tuberose as an inspiration since it is such a multifaceted smell/flower. Thanks so much for the generous draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • I love tuberose and the idea behind Murice Imperiale is very intriguing – a mineral and moist, underwater tuberose. Surely something you don’t find on a regular basis!
I am in the EU! Many thanks!

  • I love reading about these conceptually innovative fragrances. I’ve never encountered a marine tuberose scent before. The notes list is fascinating. The sea aspects are amazingly represented by coral, seaweed, sea musk and ambergris with the tuberose supported by saffron and tuberose. What a great combination! I also love the addition of petrichor to amp up the humid part of the perfume. Would love to win a bottle and I’m definitely checking to see of samples are available. I’m in MD, USA.

  • The fabulous details, intriguing information and how beautiful the review was sparked me. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Sign me up for a new interpretation of tuberose to add to my collection. The longevity of this extrait along with the water aspects sound great. In USA. Thanks!

First of all, tuberose is one of my favorites notes. Emmanuelle sparked my interest with “Closing my eyes, I see (and smell) the red algae dancing to the rhythm of the water current that reveals powerful moist notes blending with a heady, camphorated tuberose.”
    Hugs from Croatia, EU. ❤️

I love touberose and when I see a touberose I want it. I am addicted to touberose it is my life. I am from EU

  • Wet sand and tuberose… what an absolutely divine combo. The humid sun of the ocean at midmorning and the briny smell of seaweed combined with white flower sounds amazing, and reminds me of a childhood growing up frequenting the rocky beaches of the East Coast. Thanks so much for the opportunity! IL, US.

  • In classical myths sirens’ beauty is a mysterious and dark thing, it takes over your best rational mind and delivers it to the abyss. I am not surprised to see it accosted to the Tuberose, to me the headiest and most mesmerizing of flowers. The rhubarb, the saltiness, the leather facets, everything in the description of this perfume appeals to me.
I am in Italy EU and I’d love this.

  • Interesting review for an emerging brand in Italy. Really quality ingredient, that Emmanuelle was able to highlight in the review.
I am curious to try and see how the marine note works, as it seems very strong.
    Hope to win it
    Riccardo, Italy EU

  • Already finding “tuberose” and “banana” in the same sentence got me incredibly excited! I love a juicy, fleshy, creamy tuberose as those that come accompanied by banana (leaf) and I’m happy to read this duo is pretty much a constant presence in Cristian Cavagna’s tuberose collection.
Anyhow, the part that really made me curious was the addition of mineral/marine/petrichor elements in Murice Imperiale without breaking the beauty of the classic tuberose and banana pairing, but adding even more charm and uniqueness to it.
    I live in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • This sounds so incredible! A collection dedicated to tuberose (swoon)! Banana leaf and tuberose and ambergris! I never thought I’d be so excited to try a perfume dedicated to molluscs… I think my favourite part, though, was your description of a mermaid tending underwater tuberose fields. Thank you for the delightful review, writing from the EU.

High praise indeed from Emmanuel really fascinated by the notes and the longevity of this fragrance. A house that I have got no experience with but I am curious to know more. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • ANDREEA ELENA TIMOFTE says:

Finally someting unique…I am really curious to try Murice Imperiale as I love tuberose and mermaids always fascinated me (I am pisces). Great review from Emmanuelle as always.

  • I was sparked by this whole underwater tuberose thing and the petrichor note which I don’t recall ever seeing before in a note list. US

  • intoperfumes says:

Very unusual notes combination. The bottle is so beautiful.
I had a chance to try all three tuberoses and they are gorgeous. I know that there will be even more in the line, I’m sure they will be as unique and creative as these three already created perfumes.
    Italy, EU.

  • Emmanuelle’s review speaking of an ethereal tuberose mermaid contrasted with the earthy petrichor is very intriguing! Would love to try this one. I’m in MN, USA

  • Ooh this sounds so different! Love the “don’t call it marine” tagline. And how Emmanuelle described the mineral notes as coming out like a wave. I enjoy both tuberose and marine notes but tend to seek out ones that veer away from how they are typically presented, and this certainly fits the bill. The vintage bottles are lovely! All the mermaid imagery is so me and seems to really suit the perfume. I am from New England, USA.

  • Learning all the ways tuberose can be presented is exciting. The story of a mineral tuberose grown deep on the ocean floor sounds so new. I’ve recently been fascinated with how ambergris, salt and seaweed can make a fragrance radiate off the skin for hours. I would love to try this and feel like a mermaid! In TX.

  • Trying a new tuberose fragrance is always a great idea! More so if it has the chances of being unique!
I am in Europe. Thank you!

  • So proud of this true Italian talent in the perfumery world.
Never have the chance to try the cavagna lines but I hope soon it would happen. Also Tuberose is one of my favorite note of all time
    Greetings from Italy

  • NituNicolae says:

What an enigmatic scent. Enbodying what a mermaid would smell like definetly makes me curious. Not the biggest fan of tuberose heavy scents, but i love anything aquatic, marine and/or salty. Great review! From Romania, EU.

  • I saw the beautiful siren and I knew I was in! Such a beautiful article. I live in the EU.

  • First thing that caught my attention was definitely the bottle. As my collection has grown I am appreciating the art work that goes into that as well as the fragrance.
Reading the review the mentioning of the banana leaf and tuberose immediately caught my eye. I can honestly say I have never heard of banana leaf being used as a fragrance note and I am intrigued. Also, the way Emmanuelle said this fragrance easily can tell a story makes me think that wearing it will be something memorable.

I am based in Dallas, Tx

  • Wow, I love those bottles – the retro shape and the brass title plates are stunning. (Also that re-face painting turned out very pretty)

The ingredients here sound unique – coral, banana leaf, petrichor and seaweed paired with tuberose? I’m curious to try it. Count me in for the drawing please. I’m in the US

  • Emmanuelle!!! ❤️❤️❤️ This fragrance sounds absolutely Captivating!!! ❤️❤️ Murice Imperiale Is going on my “to try” list straight away! I love seaweed, petrichor, ambergris, and rhubarb; what kind of heaven will these notes smell of when combined with tuberose? Thank you for this Gorgeous review and the opportunity to find out!!! USA ❤️

  • Okay, wow. The description is beautiful and interesting, but the strange combination of notes shouldn’t work at ALL and makes me want to sniff this! I live in the USA.

  • What a brilliant review of this magical note tuberose. Emmanuelle presented this beautiful perfume in a Shakespearean fashion. Oh what eloquence. I could only dream of the effect this fragrance would have on my psyche. It’s so uplifting with tuberose at the center of a potion of unusual notes. I love tuberose as it’s my favorite note in Fracas. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win a bottle .
    I am NY based .
    Wonderful review !

  • Tuberose , ambergris , saffron and mermaid imaginary stories is something i always desire, thanks for the draw, from EU!

  • The longevity of this perfume is exceptional and the projection outstanding – that’s where Emmanuelle really got me interested! Also, this is a tuberose perfume for people like me who are always looking for a new interpretation featuring our favorite flower.

  • I love tuberose in perfume, but I think, after a while, it is difficult to find a tuberose that doesn’t follow some known paths [fresh green, heady, creamy sweet].
Since I am a big fan of marine fragrances, I am extremely curious about Murice Imperiale and of the smell of underwater tuberose fields 🙂
    I live in EU.

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for the detailed review. I have a soft spot for fragrances that make a big impression in a fragrance show and it sounds like Murice Imperiale did just that and more. I’m also curious on how the banana leaf note works out with tuberose and ambergris. I would be stoked to smell Murice Imperiale. Greetings from Texas USA

  • wandering_nose says:

I am so happy for Emmanuelle that she had the opportunity to discover three of the seven tuberose based fragrances in the amazing “La Tuberosa Seconda Me” series from Cristian Cavagna. I can only imagine her happiness and excitement, and really hope she gets to try the other four perfumes in the series. I truly admire the concept of dedicating a sizeable line to various iterations of one flower – this shows true dedication and the high craftsmanship of the perfumer. An underwater, moist, mineral tuberose has my full interest – I would be delighted to win Murice Imperiale. Thank you from the EU

  • Thanks for the review Emmanuelle!

I love reading about fragrance and perfumers that I have not been introduced to yet.

Aquatic fragrances always hit a soft spot for me. I’m an avid outdoor swimmer and I love fresh, salty air. Marine notes suit me well and I would love to give this a wearing!

    Greetings fro the UK!

  • wallygator88 says:

Fantastic review of such a fascinating fragrance Emmanuelle.

I have not seen a tuberose fragrance with these notes before. The use of banana leaf is quite interesting and would work wonderfully with the waxy nature of tuberose. The use of petrichor, coral accords, red seaweed accord, sea musk and ambergris to bring the ocean to the wearers mind is also a beautiful touch.

Will certainly try to pick up a sample of this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Oh boy, I love tuberose and the description of this fragrance made my mouth watery. I would love to smell this fragrance and this fragrance house in particular. I love the concept behind Murice Imperiale and I adore the longevity and projection it delivers.
    USA here.

What interests me about Emmanuelle’s review of Murice Imperiale is learning about his passion for Tuberose and learning about this beautiful Tuberose based line from Christian Cavagna at Esxence 2022. Winner of Best Show Top 10 Murice Imperiale sounds truly delightful with Tuberose, aquatic vibes, identifying with the color purple and mermaids this fragrance sounds divine. I’m from the USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

I am so happy you featured Cristian in your blog! I have started following him and Adjiumi a couple of years ago and I managed to meet him in person 2 or 3 times already and it is true he is really an artist at heart and a lover of beauty in all its forms! The (for now) trilogy dedicated to tuberose is really great, I have and love Musa paradisiaca and I agree that the particular accord he created with tuberose-banana leaf-(also ginger?don’t remember) is really peculiar and cannot be forgotten after you’ve smelled it. I am not a fan of marine and ozonic perfumes but Murice Imperiale is definitely an exception, it takes you to the depth of the sea and up again drying your tuberose on the beach, and why do I detect also melon? I also love the retro style of the bottles, so elegant! Can’t wait to discover the other 4 interpretations of tuberose, a note I am particularly fond of, in the meantime it would be nice to add Murice to my collection! 😀 Greetings from Italy

  • I love the mermaid! I enjoyed reading about the petrichor scent, that can be smelled in the woods after a storm. The rhubarb, saffron and coral notes are calling my name. On my wishlist it goes. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • This sounds like paradise indeed. And the pictures of the mermaids are so beautiful and dreamy.
I have a special sweet spot for mermaids and this sounds like a fantastic perfume. I’m in the EU.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested to try this fragrance because it seems very interesting. I’m interested to see what certain notes/ingredients in this are like, e.g. red seaweed, petrichor, coral, banana leaves, and more. I like to hear about fragrances which have good performance. Emmanuelle’s review caused me to think that I’d like to try this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Richard Potter says:

The description is enchanting, the bottle is exquisite, and the AI mermaid is startling. Since my bottle of Bogue’s Maai ran dry I have been longing for a new tuberose. This sounds like a winner. I hope I may be one. USA

  • foreverscents says:

What a fascinating concept and what fascinating ingredients. Red seaweed absolute? Yes, I must try this fragrance. I love that all the fragrances from this house revolve around tuberose. The idea of a mermaid cultivating tuberose under the sea–genius! And those art deco bottles are gorgeous.
    I live in the USA.

  • What an interesting combination of notes! I would like to be transported into the world where mermaids take care of underwater tuberose fields, and smell the scent if flower and mollusk, of flora and fauna and a different world. Greetings from Austria.

  • AdventurousFox says:

One thing I love is when perfumers emphasize different facets of certain ingredients and create a wide variety of complex sensations around one ingredient. Talented Mr. Cavagna seems to achieve exactly that in his most recent work. As a huge fan of tuberose who wears it in all seasons, day and night, I’m a little bit “bored” with the classic floral interpretation and am always looking for new unusual ones. I would love to be able to try the Murice Imperiale, Greetings from EU!

  • You’re right about these bottles Emmanuelle—they’re a really cool design, especially paired with Cristian Cavagna’s artwork. Speaking to these fragrances, I’ve found tuberose to be challenging in the past, so I’d love to try a fragrance that changes my mind! Musa Paradisiaca is an interesting take—I don’t see banana tree used often. Murice Imperiale is even more intriguing; rhubarb often makes a good fragrance great for me, and along with the tuberose, the mineral texture of this fragrance sounds terrific. I also like the sound of the saffron here. Thanks for the detailed review.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • These bottles remind me of the Annick Goutal bottles, funnily enough! I would not have thought of the marine notes to complement tuberose, but with Emmanuelle’s review, I can imagine it working. The art is stunning too.
I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Love the photo. I love a fragrance with good longevity. I’d love to win this. Thanks. USA.
