Costume National I review Fanny Bal and Costume National J review Julien Rasquinet

CoSTUME NATIONAL is an Italian fashion house founded in 1986 by designer Ennio Capasa. The House is known for its “urban rocker” chic with slim and sexy silhouettes, minimalist,  fine Italian craftsmanship and avant garde designs. The two 2019 releases CoSTUME NATIONAL I by Julien Rasquinet and CoSTUME NATIONAL J by Fanny Bal are two very distinctive eau de parfums with niche vibes.

Let’s start with I by Julien Rasquinet of IFF.  We have featured Julien Rasquinet in our young perfumer series, (his mentor was the great Pierre Bourdon).

Frederic Malle The Moon by Julien Rasquinet of IFF

Julien wrote to me in 2016, “Some people say I have a hand with for spices, some others say for incense and smoke. But for me, the only thing that matters when I am writing my formula, is that the raw material is relevant to the story of the fragrance. I have chosen each raw material like choosing the right word to tell a story”. CoSTUME NATIONAL I: The “I” is for Italy, specifically Tuscany and  is an aromatic dry leather.

Perfumes by Fanny Bal of IFF

Fanny Bal of IFF

J was composed by Fanny Bal ,also featured in our young perfumer series, teacher was Dominque Ropion. She told me “When I receive a brief, the first thing I do is to dive into the brand’s universe. I look at the website, visit the store, read articles, everything that can make me understand what the brand is about”. J is for Japan and the clean summery, scent  that is at once minimal and complex. Sebastian recently did a top soapy scent video and wishes he had this first, as it would have been his number one favorite.  I find J to be more floral musky then Sebastian, with one of the most beautiful neroli notes I have experienced lately. Both I and J follow niche aesthetics and are like yin and yang, suitable to both men and women.-Michelyn Camen, Editor In Chief

  • I love that I really feel like I’m learning when I watch sebastians video. He describes the scents beautifully and explains them in a way that is understandable and also eloquent. I have not tried Costume National but would love to. If I was to win I would like to recieve J. From USA. Thanks.

  • Edward OHearn says:

I am interested in “I”. I haven’t liked many of the leather scents I have tried, keep hoping there is one out there for me.

Regardless I will give “I” a test and see how it is on my skin and with Fall just around the corner, I have better get at my testing.

  • I would very much like to get these fragrances. Being a fragrance connoisseur. I love completely unique in exotic scents. I’m not familiar with this house but I very much want to be.

  • fazalcheema says:

I am more intrigued by I. From Sebastian’s review it seems it has woody and leathery element and it is safe wear for daily use. My fav. from Costume National is their original Homme. I am in US.

  • Aaron Montgomery says:

Sebastian’s video piqued my interest when he said that “J” is a super clean soapy fragrance. I’m really drawn to those types of fragrances and to see that “J” would top his current list is huge! I really value his opinion! At this time I do not currently own a CoSTUME NATIONAL fragrance, but again his description “J” sounds amazing!

  • I am new to the fragrance world. So watching channels like Sebastian really help inform me and teach me what to look for in fragrances. I look forward to learing more from Sebastian.

  • I just love fragrances, so watching Sebastian’s videos are great because they ignite my imagination as to what the fragrances featured would/could smell like. I have never smelled a Costume National fragrance, however, I’m currently looking for a leather fragrance so it would be great if i could win “I”! Thanks! (In USA)

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s review, especially the note breakdown. Costume National is a new brand to me. I would love to get my nose on “I”. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • To say that if he had had “J” for his top 20 review it would have been #1 makes me want to try it even more. I would love to win a bottle of J. USA

  • Allen Recinos-Lopez says:

I appreciate that Sebastian is very informative and to the point with a genuine enthusiasm for the fragrances. I’ve been wanting to explore more soapy fragrances in particular and have an affinity for Japanese style and culture. I am not familiar with either perfumer and have not tried any from Costume National.

  • Greg Schlegel says:

I loved Sebastian’s review of these 2 fragrances. Especially of the super clean soapy frag “J”. This really sounds to be in my wheelhouse. I’m an avid citrus summery enjoyer. Hope to win a bottle.

  • “I” sounds great! I love leathers. I’ve read nothing but good things coming from Julien Rasquinet. Thanks for the draw! US.

  • I love Costume National, one of my first dives into niche/designer fragrances. It was great to see Sebastian get so excited about these two new releases — I didn’t realize there had also been other earlier releases (I’m behind!). Both sound fabulous, but Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year and I am always searching for fragrances that are perfect for Fall. Please enter me in the drawing for “I”. And thanks for a great review!

  • I’d love to try these in person, but alas, I’ve found nowhere to do so.
“I” sounds like a winner in my book and I do lack a proper leather fragrance. Fingers crossed.
    Nice job as usual Sebastian.

  • Bruce VanHoose says:

Enjoy Sebastian’s reviews, including this one. Interested by the description of J and its clean smell. I enjoy cherry blossom on my wife, now she can enjoy it on me mixed with rice flower.

  • I love the curved bottles. I love vintage soapy scents and I love leather. Both sound amazing. I like that although Sebastian likes I better, he has put a dent in J in the warm weather. I am not familiar with Julien and Fanny. The only CN that I have tried is Scent Intense, but I did not like it. I’m in USA.

  • I was specifically drawn to the representation of countries and cultures in these two fragrances. Each one speaks of a country’s heritage and tradition genuinely manifested through two young, outstanding perfumers. I have yet to smell a Costume National Fragrance. I would love to win the fragrance J. (Commenting from FL, USA.)

  • Great review. Costume National is one of my favourite houses on the market and i think it’s really underrated. I guess i would like more the “I” from Italy from the notes list, but i cannot wait to test both of them. I absolutely adore Scent Intense and the amazing 21 from the line. Thanks for the draw and thanks to Sebastian for the review.

  • Doc2SmellG8 says:

I enjoyed Sebastian’s very well put together description of each. I always learn so much watching his channel. Thanks! California USA

  • I’ve not ever tried any Costume national but I would Love to win a bottle of (CoSTUME NATIONAL J)
because I just love clean soapy fragrances. Sebastian has very good taste so I’m sure I would love it!!

  • kkarnes1986 says:

I love all of Sebastian’s reviews and how thoroughly he talks about the notes. I would love to win J because of the unique cherry blossom note.

  • leah nunally says:

What I most appreciated about Sebastian’s review was how he broke down the inspiration for both fragrances, J for Japan and I for Italy. Then he begins to describe different notes and how they compare to each other. I love his descriptions because it helps me imagine what each one smells like without actually smelling them. I have never tried anything from this house before, and was unfamiliar with the perfumers involved, but I am very new to the fragrance scene. If I won this giveaway I would love to try fragrance J.

  • The “I” sounds amazing. It would be perfect to win for the current summer season and have an opportunity to try out this brand.

  • Like all of his videos, Sebastian’s video for Costume National’s latest creations is clear and concise. His love for fragrances comes across as genuine and knowledgeable.

  • Sebastian is obviously knowledgeable about and has a genuine love for fragrances. He has clear and concise explanations that always come across as engaging and personable. I am very interested in “I.”

  • Tyler J Sweeney says:

I love the idea of two broader mentalities influencing one house so much and you can honestly see it in their designs and get an idea of that in their fragrances.

  • CeCeLaFleur says:

Wow, both new fragrances sound interesting the way Sebastian described them. I’m very interested in trying J. I’ve been looking for a clean fragrance that would also evoke memories of my travels to Japan…something that I could wear more than just situationally. (Many of the other fragrances listed in the article about Ms Bal sound super interesting to me as well, so I think her J fragrance could be right on target for me 🙂 Thanks for your consideration!

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always so informative and interesting. I’m very much intrigued by cosTUME National J. Given the current amount of heat, I like the idea of a “…clean summery, scent that is at once minimal and complex.” Loved the review. Thank you for the generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I like how Sebastian explained both fragrances in intricate detail. I am not familiar with either perfumers but I would love too become, my favorite fragrance from the costume national house is soul costume national. I’m very interested in The J fragrance from this house.

  • “I” definitely sounds interesting. Leather and wood makes excellents combination for me.

  • Marcus E Martin says:

Living in Arizona I often seek out fresh summer scents. “J” seems like a perfect fragrance for our weather here in Arizona. Sebastian is the best at describing fragrances. I thought about Mugler Cologne when he was describing “J”. I am very curious about how they compare. The only Costume National fragrance I tried was Homme which I like very much.

  • Sabastian said he would habe put J at the very top of his soapy fragrance list! So I would love to win that as I’m very fond of clean soapy fragrances! Thank you!

  • Saqib Jamil says:

It is the first time I heard about CoSTUME NATIONAL and Sebastian always introduce new housed to me. I would love to win J as i live in warm climate and it would be perfect for me. I never owned perfume developed by ulien Rasquinet or Fanny Bal.

  • Sebastian is incredibly knowledgeable. I always enjoy his reviews and this review was no different. It is great to see him speak about fragrances that excite him. I would love to try J, though I think I should choose I to try first.

  • My favorite costume national is: Homme Eau de Parfum. Loved the review, the woody and the citrusy. Living in the EU.

  • Lisa F Collins says:

Sebastian’s reviews are always so detailed, and this video was right on point. I love the enthusiasm he has for fragrances. I haven’t heard of either of the perfumers, nor have I tried any Costume National scents. I would love to win J because the notes sound more like my style…clean & crisp.

  • Ghuffy Zeesh says:

By the reviews I would love to have both but being a freshie addict and an admirer of Perfumer Fanny Bal I would love to have “J” as your precious gift 🙂

    Thank you

  • I have costume national soul and it’s a classic. Looks like the I is more style as I love Italian leather. I liked the video a lot but don’t know about soapy perfumes so costume national I it is. I know the perfumers names and read their bios

  • Adrian Horga says:

I would like to try these fragrances. Being a fragrance connoisseur, that owns a few other fragrances I love unique scents. I am familiar with this house And I love Homme and Soul.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Another great review by Sebastian. Definitely interested in J as clean, soapy scents are my favorite style of fragrance. Hope to get my hands on this juice!

  • doveskylark says:

I used to find so many Costume National pieces in second hand stores when I lived in Tokyo. I bought some great jackets from them. I have never tried any of their fragrances. I would love to try J to remind me of my time in Japan. The rice flour note intrigues me.
    I live in the USA.

  • Sebastian is always concise and descriptive in his reviews. With this, he made J sound most appealing. Particularly given the soapy, floral, neroli character. So I’m most interested in that one, and I’d like to get it if I win.
Im not familiar with the noses. Of the house, I really like Homme. I also love their clothes.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • I love sebastian’s reviews ! He tells us the texture and feeling of the main notes and the accords and talks about his experiance wearing them. Very honest and casual is his art ! Japan has my heart and I wish to own it !!! I am not familiar with these stellar fragrance creators. My favorite costume national is the origanol homme !

  • Sebastian always does an excellent job of reviewing the fragrances. He mad “””Italy sound so inviting I wanted to curl up with it. . I’m not familiar with either perfumer But with Julien studying under my fave I’m right there. My fave CoSTUME NATIONAL frag is a toss up between Soul and Homme? I’m from the USA.

  • Darryl Farrington says:

As always great detail in your reviews, in my opinion the most trust worthy fragrance reviewer

  • Darryl Farrington says:

Great review as always, most trusted reviewer bar none. Not familiar with costume national but excited to try . I would love to get I if I am chosen

  • Wow, this sounds so beautiful and clean! I love that it has a clean, soapy feel to it. I’m always looking for a fragrance like this. One of my favorites is Mugler Cologne but simply has no longevity. This may be a great replacement! Another great review by Sebastian!

    I live in the US.

  • He gives wonderful in depth descriptions of the scents..can almost smell them just from his reviews. I myself would be most interested in J. I’m not familiar with Julien or Fanny. I have no favorite Costume National as I’m new to the scent world. Yet to own a Niche cologne. USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

J sounds quite interesting to me with the Neroli and cherry blossom creating an elegant soapy fragrance. Great review by Sebastian, he’s made me want to try this one. Thank you for the draw I’m in the US

  • WaltherP99 says:

I do follow Sebastian as a reviewer for a long-long time – since his old chanel Man Loves Cologhne .Count me in for sure for this one.
I was not aware CoSTUME NATIONAL and Jusbox are 2 brands under the same hat . Good to know .
Of course i’m familiar with both Julien Rasquinet and Fanny Bal.Julien Rasquinet composed :
    1. Russian Tea , masterpiece of a fragrances , and to me the best tea fragrance ever created.A must have for every fragrance lover.
    2. Green Bubble by Jusbox i will get for the winter.
Fanny Bal i know for Hemingway by Masque Milano . One of the best vetiver fragrances for the past 2 years.
I do ownl Soul by CoSTUME NATIONAL-great scent for a autumn nights out.
I’d like to win a bottle of I , because of the leather note.
    All @cafleurebon @lookfeelsmellgreat , @Offical_ Europerfumes , @costumenationalscents , @julienrasquinet , @fannybalparfumeur i already follow.
    Thanks

  • isunnychaudhary says:

As always with your videos it’s not just fragrance but it’s about who is behind them which makes it amazing to watch and ofcourse intergluing as well. If given a chance I would prefer J as it has cherry blossom and I love to visit Japan one day!

    Sunny – USA

  • My first clash so to speak, with Costume National was when I blind bought Soul . Saw so much positive reviews on YouTube I had to get it. Usually I don’t like buying fragrances without proper testing, but the price on the discounter was way too good to miss out such a deal. I’m glad I got it. Niche quality fragrance, on mid level designer prices.
Both J and I sounds really good, but herbal leather I beats soapy clean J all day , every day 🙂 I is my choice.
Julien Rasquinet I do know because i bought Jusbox discovery set from Europerfumes for $38. Fanny Bal I’m not familiar with.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • I could be in the minority , but i know Costume National as fashion brand only . I love my Costume National leather jacket and black dress , but fragrances? This is the first time I’ve heard about CN fragrances.
I know all Jusbox fragrances since the 2 companies are related , and Green Bubble, Beat Cafe , Golden Serenade, Siren & Sailors are all really good.I was able to smell all while in Germany. I’ve heard both perfumers names .
“I” is the one for me.Smooth soft leather with cedar = winner if it’s done well.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Leather is one of my favorite notes in perfumery, so If I’m lucky I will be my choice for sure.
I’m not familiar with Costume National, but Julien Rasquinet = Masque Milano Russian Tea. Mesmerizing scent.
Fanny Bal = Hemingway. I’m not so sure about this one. Unlike Russian Tea, Hemingway is a bit too mature for me. I will sample it again in the winter, just for case . My mind could change because of the colder weather
    Thank you for the giveaway
    USA

  • What I enjoyed about Sebastian’s review is the research he did, along with the picture he paints, making you just WANT to try the fragrance. Which I want to do. I’ve only tried Costume National Soul (which I really like) so, right now, that’s my favorite.

  • Costume National is one of my favorite designers and i’m glad Sebastian reviewed two of their new fragrances. I like J because of Sebastian’s description of it being an ultra clean and soapy fragrance. I hope I get the chance to smell it soon. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Sebastian, great review of I and J by Costume National. I am not familiar with Julien Rasquinet and Fanny Bal until learning about them in this review. As of right now Costume National Pour Homme is my favorite from this house. I would pick I because of how Sebastian describes the note breakdown of Aromatics and a nice, smooth, wearable, and non-animalic leather. I am from the USA.

  • I loved hearing Sebastian’s description of these scents; they both sound amazing. The fact that summer is winding down and fall is coming soon makes “I” very appealing right now.

  • I loved hearing Sebastian’s description of these scents; they both sound amazing. The fact that summer is winding down and fall is coming soon makes “I” very appealing right now. I honestly was not familiar with this fragrance house prior to seeing Sebastian’s review, but I will be looking into their other offerings.

  • Costume National I know because of what I do. I’m a barber, and a few years back one regular client came in for a cut , and after he was done sprayed himself with Costume National Homme. I do admit i was impressed, and asked him about the fragrance , and soon after bought a bottle. Powerful manly spicy fragrance.
Tuscan Leather fan here. When Sebastian mentioned “Leather from Tuscany” I immediately made my choice.
After I saw Sebastian Green Bubble video for Cafleurebon, bought a bottle from Perfumology. Julien Rasquinet made it. Good looking Fanny Bal I know nothing about.
    Thanks

  • RobertNicolasB says:

Another great review, Sebastian! As much as I would love another clean and soapy summer scent, “I” sounds like the best fit for my tastes. The leathery ambroxan sounds really nice. Thanks for the opportunity. -USA

  • As always, Sebastian has a great review, in always looking for nice summer scents that are not too heavy, so I’m gonna have to go for scent J. I would love to try I, especially for fall, but I also love orange blossom too! In the us, thanks for the review and the draw!

  • Carol Webb says:

I always learn alot from Sebastian’s reviews. He has way of breaking down the scents/notes that just makes sense to me.
If chosen, I would prefer to receive J. I’m intrigued by I but I’m more drawn to the notes in J.
I’ve not purchased any CoSTUME NATIONAL fragrance yet – but I’ll be reading some more and may splurge on myself.
Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Costume National “Soul” is one of my dad’s favorite fragrances , and i know Sebastian is a fan of it too.
Aromatic and herbal smooth leather , Italy inspired. I’ll go with “I” .
Fanny Bal i do not now , but Julien Rasquinet i 100% do .He’s the creator of my beloved Russian Tea by Masque Milano , and the two best Jusbox fragrances – Golden Serenade and Siren & Sailors. Both already available in UK , and i’ve smelled them there.
Thank you Europerfums for the draw.
    USA

  • Excellent review by Sebastian and he is always so descriptive! Both of these fragrances sound amazing and I love that the “I” is for Italy and the “J” is for Japan. My choice is definitely “J” because of it being a soapy scent. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Sebastian always does wonderful reviews that really break down the scent. I love leather fragrances and this ine sounds complex yet easy for daily wear. Dint have too many of them so would love to win I. Love Julians Green Bubble from Jusbox and Homme from Costume National. In the US. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s review because he touched on the notes and what he likes. He ignites one’s imagination regarding any fragrance. I’m not u familar with Julien Rasquinet and Fanny Bal at all. I’ll love to try CoSTUME NATIONAL J.
    I live in USA.

  • I loved Sebastian’s video as always. Even though “I” was his favorite, I think I am most interested in “J”. I live in a hot climate most of the year and love clean and soapy scents. Leather smells don’t really suit the climate here. This is also the first time I have heard of the company Costume National. USA
