Commodity Gin, Nectar and Tonka photo by Sebastian
Sometimes a brand will be discontinued…not because of lack of sales but because it grew too fast and couldn’t keep up with demand. In 2014, Commodity Fragrances started a Kickstarter campaign and it popularity grew as it became the first direct to consumer brand. You could try before you buy, free samples. In 2015 the allure of Sephora beckoned. By March 31, 2019, it shuttered its doors. On October 31st, 2019 the distributor Europerfumes purchased the company (This was such great news it made CaFleureBon’s Best Buzz of 2019). I asked the new brand owner, Vicken Arslanian, founder and President of Europerfumes why.
“Commodity was one of the rare brands that made the complex world of independent fragrances easy to understand. There was an elemental nature about it that attracted me (and many others). It’s simplicity almost pokes fun at how other brands try so hard to build a story around fragrance and Commodity does it without trying. A round black bottle with the word BOOK that smells amazing. What more would I want?”- Vicken Arslanian, Re-Founder
For those who are unfamiliar with Commodity, there were and are currently 15 fragrances in the line, divided into three collections: BLACK, WHITE and PLATINUM; under the new ownership the brand stays true to its early mission and at this time only sold on its dedicated website- https://commodityfragrances.com/ -Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
Personally, I have always been a fan of Book, Gold and Nectar, but I posed the question to Editor Sebastian Jara, The Perfume Guy to share his thoughts on the three you should be wearing. Sebastian chose:
