ÇaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery: OK Fine Fragrances (Steve DeMercado and Michael Simpson)+ Behind the Barrel Draw

Steve DeMercado (R) and Michael Simpson (L) of OK Fine Fragrances

Steve DeMercado (R) and Michael Simpson (L) of OK Fine Fragrances

Our Profile:  Steve DeMercado and I, Michael Simpson, have been collaborators, workmates, rock & roll bandmates, and great friends for 20 years.  And this week, we’re thrilled, as Co-founders, to introduce you to our own indie brand, OK Fine Fragrances. The fact that it’s actually happening this week is still sinking in, but in a way, you could say it’s been in the works since we first met.  Everything about the company, and the amazing new creative process we’re pioneering, reflects on our history together. It’s a direct reflection of our beliefs about what fragrance is and what fragrance can be. Mostly, it’s about our passion to create a brand like no other for indie fragrance lovers that get it.

Steve DeMercado Master Perfumer Fifi Award winning

Steve DeMercado Master Perfumer Co-Founder OK Fine Fragrances

Steve’s intro to the business is a great story. He was the bass player in a rock band playing a gig at the fragrance house, Naarden, the summer of his senior year in high school.  The electricity went out and he struck up a conversation with newly hired master perfumer Johann Hydel. They immediately hit it off and Johann offered Steve a summer job as his compounder. Today, Steve is the multi-Fifi award winning nose behind scents for Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Givenchy, Michael Kors and others. A good lesson for all you young rockers…right?!!

I fortuitously discovered the wonderful world of fragrance as a junior marketer managing the classic after shave brand, Skin Bracer. (Thanks, I needed that!) I immediately realized that talking with people about fragrance and creating products that fulfill their wants and desires is an amazingly fun way to spend the day. I spent the first half of my career marketing brands at Coty and the second half with Steve at Fragrance Resources where we collaborated on creating fragrances and product concepts on behalf of a wide range of clients.

OK Fine Fragrances American Oak Barrels

OK Fine Fragrances is all about offering a rule-breaking, innovative, authentic, world-class artisanal fragrance experience to fragrance fans who, like you, who will settle for nothing less than WOW!  We are proud to introduce you to the first company dedicated to handcrafting fragrances aged in American Oak barrels. This process has been used to add aroma, complexity and to smooth fine wines, whiskeys and bourbons for ages, and now we’re pioneering this creative process for an entire range of fine fragrances.

And the results are amazing. We begin by crafting honest, straightforward, artisanal fragrances that are then aged in American oak barrels “seasoned” with ingredients specifically chosen to interact with the original scent. Steve monitors the aging process, just as a master distiller would, until he feels that oak barrel has worked its magic. In his words, “This approach is incredibly inspiring, and I’m always surprised with the results. And I love the fact that each batch is unique, never to be exactly replicated, even if I tried! And limiting our batches to 75 bottles makes them and the experience all the more special”.

On American Perfumery: We’ve all been pretty lucky to have experienced a golden age of perfumery in the US for the last several decades. And it’s been an amazing time to be in the business in New York City as we’ve trended from powerhouse florals in the 80’s, to sheers in the 90’s, woods in the 2000’s, and back to all of them again in the 10’s! We’ve also been lucky to experience the rise of niche brands, many of which now are corporate-sized or owned themselves. But we think today is the most exciting time of all in American Perfumery.

Today, AMERICAN INDIE FRAGRANCE is totally where the action is!  Small, independent makers are igniting the industry with new, innovative ideas, risk-taking scents and, finally, with more fun, and definitely less pretentious, attitude toward fragrances and branding. It’s less about trends and flankers and more about artistry and expression.  Steve and I are having a blast as the newest members of this talented, entrepreneurial and passionate group of Indie fragrance makers.

Waiting for Gracie rocking a fragrance industry party way back when. Steve is second from right and Michael is in the far right

Our Favorite  American Artists: Our favorite shared passion, after fragrance, is making music. We formed a garage band called Waiting for Gracie years ago with a few good friends from the industry and spent every Wednesday night and many Saturday nights rehearsing and gigging. We didn’t get quite good enough to quit our day jobs, but we did have way too much fun playing together. Today, we play in several different bands, and interestingly, the genres are all distinctly American, including the blues, jazz, country and bluegrass.

Multi-genre American music musician, Ry Cooder.

Multi-genre American music musician, Ry Cooder.

That’s why our favorite American artist is Ry Cooder, a musician’s musician well known for his interest in a broad range of American roots music.

Steve and I are totally thrilled to be the first company dedicated to this amazing new approach. And we’re proud to be small, rock and roll, rule-breaking American Indie makers.

  • Are you kidding?!!! Smoked Oud aged in Bourbon barrel? Sign me up! Consider me an instant fan in Monterey, California.

  • fazalcheema says:

I didnt expect Steve and Michael to have industry background as they seem country chaps from the pictures and in their interests. Their concept reminds me of Mugler’s oak barrel limited edition releases of their classics. My choice is Santal. I am in US

  • Doni Light says:

Finally someone actually did what Mugler pretended to do with Pure Malt! As a guitarist myself, I totally resonate with both Steve and Mike. In fact, it seems that they might have succeeded in bottling the memory of SRV! At least, that’s the vibe I get from the lineup. The packaging even reminds me of a six-pack (what I like to call a pack of strings) – all-american, straight up. Like how they added vetiver and suede to VBO and frankincense to AMO. Favourtie though looks to be PRO with its buttery qualities and added vanilla. Would definitely love to win that one. Rock on! NC

  • drewactor says:

This house sounds so interesting. I love when beer is aged in oak barrels so why not perfume. Glad to see two friends working together to make thier dreams come true and do something unique in thr fragrance world. Love their rock and roll background which i thinks bleeds into their new apporach to fragrance. In the USA in VA. Would love to win VBO.

  • Michael and Steve are inspirational for any creative entrepreneurs. It’s so refreshing to see people put their ideas into action. It’s what American is all about. Bravo! I love vanilla fragrances so VBO sounds wonderful to me. Thanks for the review and the giveaway! I liked the CaFleurBon Profiles in American Perfumery.

  • I’ll be searching for these soon! I enjoyed reading about their music background, and Steve’s perfumery experience. If lucky. I’m interested in PRO, and I liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery. USA

  • I really like Steve and Michael story. To age fragrances is oak barrels . Now that’s what I call creativity. No doubt I will sample OK Fine Fragrances , because of your uniqueness. Plus I like music too.
We should have more people like them . Best wishes guys with the business.
I’d like to win Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon .

Thank you for sharing your journey with us! I wish that I had the chance to go on a similar journey to you. There’s always hope for the future, at least. As for which I’d like- oud? spice? smoke? Sign me up for Smoked Oud! I did like your profile, and I’m in the us.

  • WaltherP99 says:

According to the article both guys should be extroverts , and that’s hard . It’s not easy nowadays to smile , to look happy and to do what YOU think you should do , and not going with the flow.I’m talking from a personal standpoint.Peronally i do not care at all about others opinion , but that’s me.
I only hope the oak barrels ( i presume used?!?) will give all the fragrances strong boozy vibe .
I’ll go with Michelyn’s pick – Patchouli fragrance aged in Rum . Patch and rum? I’m all in.

Oak barrels aging no doubt makes their creations unique.Smile , make music , be happy and create more.Coffee fragrance will be nice too haha.
I do have a sweet tooth , i like patchouli and vetiver , so Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon is my choice.
    Top opportunity – thank you.

I like their diverse backgrounds coming together to create a unique indie brand. I visited their website, and all of the fragrances sound great. OBO Smoked Oud in Bourbon is the one I’d like to win. I’m in the USA.

  • Marvalicious says:

I totally agree with Steve’s assessment of the fragrance world today is more exciting and groundbreaking than ever before. I love the idea of aging fragrances in whiskey barrels and I love good aged whiskey too The ending was poetic sending shivers and pride down my spine, “and we’re proud to be small, rock and roll, rule-breaking American indie makers” Hell, yeah, brother! ‘Merica

  • Marvalicious says:

Oh I forgot to include where I live and what fragrance I would want- I live in Indiana USA and I would love to try OBO for sure!! See my other comment for what I love about this article. I couldn’t agree more with Steve!!

  • Interesting biographical snapshot of the two men. My choice is the Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon. US

  • NiceVULady says:

What a unique path these two have chosen! I’m trying to wrap my head around the concept of this aging process. I’d go with the PRO as I love patchouli and rum both. I’m interested to see how that would play out. With the small amount per batch, I hope they would still be able to offer samples of their fragrances. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Fragrances age in barrels! Wow is this a winner in my book. The fragrance I like is the PRO – Patchouli Rum. Thanks for the generosity. I live in CA, USA.

  • This sounds like a pretty fascinating line of fragrances. As a fan of adult beverages, I sometimes encounter a wine or bourbon that I wish could be bottled as a perfume, and these guys seem to have worked it out! I’d love to get a bottle of SGO or OBO if I won this draw. I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love this! Rock and Roll, Bourbon, and Perfume?! Yes, please! I also LOVE the bottle designs! I think I would go with the VBO because vanilla and bourbon are two of my favorite things. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw and for the heads up for these fragrances. I will certainly be ordering some samples.

  • wildevoodoo says:

I think the coincidental nature of Steve’s entry into the business is hilarious! It also is intriguing but doesn’t really surprise me that Steve and Michael were in a rock band together, as I find a lot of similarities between music/composition and perfumery. The practice it takes to become truly skilled at blending harmonious notes together to create something more beautiful than the sum of its parts, and the reality that in the end, it’s all a matter of personal taste. I would most love to try VBO, although AMO also sounds delightful! I ‘liked’ the facebook page for CFB Profiles in American Perfumery, and I am in the US 🙂

  • James Sherwood says:

I find it interesting that Steve got involved with fragrance while playing a gig. I have ordered samples of all six. Not sure which is my favorite just yet. It’s cool that they are a couple states north. Jim in Southern Md. \ DC

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Fascinating! I know someone near and dear that would flip over this. What a cool idea, I’d love to get a chance to smell these, especially SGO (AMO comes in a close second). With a history of 20 years, I bet they had some great fun making these! Thanks for the article and the generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • Sometime we just don’t know that fate has in store for us. Interesting to read how Steve went from a bass player in a band to a fragrance master. I love the story. I’ll love to win double vanilla aged in bourbon.
    I live in California.

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed learning about the fragrance journey of Michael Simpson and Steve DeMarcado of OK Fine Fragrances. Steve DeMarcado learning the ropes from a Master Perfumer as a senior in high school and Michael Simpson starting his journey working for Skin Bracer after shave. I also am a huge music fan so I can respect their love for music. All of these fragrances sound amazing with the aged Oak Barrels. The VBO and PRO sound the best to me. For the tie breaker I will go with PRO since that is Michelyn’s pick.

  • I found it interesting to hear how their careers shaped their new hobby/career in perfumery. I would choose VBO Batch 101. I’m a sucker for a smokey vanilla. Arkansas, USA

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Having a background in the fragrance industry does not mean you’ll succeed as independent /niche/indie house owner .Some will , others won’t , but i have a good feeling about Steve and Michael. There is some sort of positive vibe around them .

“with more fun, and definitely less pretentious, attitude toward fragrances and branding”

Good – i like their attitude.

If someone from OK Fine Fragrances is reading the comments i have a question. On your site in the sample section there is one fragrance not available in full bottle. It’s called “Blonde Oud Aged in Rye Oak Barrel” .
    https://www.okfinefragrances.com/product-page/ok-fine-fragrance-samples
Why i can order a sample , but i can’t get full bottle? You’ll start selling it a bit later i presume?
If possible i’d like to win a bottle of it , if not “PATCHOULI AGED IN A GOLDEN RUM” is my choice.
    Thanks for the draw

  • AlwaysWater says:

I always have time for a rich sandalwood. Sign me on for SGO Santal!
Loved reading about the small batches, and how they don’t even want to try to recreate the same scent twice. That’s true artist spirit right there.

  • Uncle1979 says:

I like the idea of a new indie brand offering :
“…a rule-breaking, innovative, authentic, world-class artisanal fragrance experience to fragrance fans who, like you, who will settle for nothing less than WOW” … with one BIG if – if the blending of the fragrances , the ingredients and final results will make me say Wow. Performance should be good too.
There are new indie and niche brands popping almost every day last few years. Huge amount of people want to jump the bandwagon, and sure there’s gems, but there are A LOT of horrible “rule-breaking” indie fragrances too.
I am a fan of boozy fragrances, and because of oak barrels aging I have high hopes for Ok Fine Fragrances.
Long time friendship, background in the sector , barrels aging – a lot of boxes are checked . I’ll order a sample pack soon.
All 5 sounds great on paper. If I have to pick one Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon will be my choice.
    Appreciate the giveaway campaign

  • Wow! First of all I love Ry Cooder. Interesting aging perfume in barrels. Why Not? I would love to try the Patchouli aged in Rum. Sounds Yummy! Thank you for the chance to win.

  • I loved that the founders introduced us to their brand and discuss “the golden age of perfumery.” Yes, it costs gold nowadays. This influx of collectors and trendiness has caused prices to skyrocket in two years. I’m in Ohio and would want to win either oud or patchouli. Tough tough choice. I think I would go with the patch since I like rum better.

  • I love the background stories of the perfumers. The best part is that they formed a band together and play together too! The whole line sounds great and I think my favorite is AMO, Amber Fragrance, aged in Mezcal. Thanks for the giveaway! I live in the USA. I also liked CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery .

  • This is such a great concept! I like the idea of limiting the batches, too. I think I’d really like Double Vanilla Aged in Bourbon.
    I live in the USA.

  • Handcrafted fragrances aged in oak barrels? You got my attention.
Being independent in the fragrance industry has both advantages , and disadvantages. You can basically do what you want to do , but at the same time it’s harder to keep up the fragrances consistent , because of lack of ingredients and so on. I was wearing a lovely smokey and boozy fragrance by …. One other American indie brand , but the second bottle I got was so different compared to the first one I had to return it. They were not able to secure the same ingredients , and even though the fragrance was nice, it was way too different .
I don’t drink , but I do enjoy boozy fragrances , and Double Vanilla aged in Bourbon is my choice.
Out of curiosity i do consider getting sample set .
I have to say bottles are nice. I like the look , and the vintage feel.
I don’t like FB , but just followed @okfinefragrances on Instagram. Hope my entry will count twice Lol
    Thanks a lot

  • I always enjoy story about how person make truth his dreams, ideas! I think if person is talented, he can have success in other arts too.
I find idea to aged in barrel great!
I would like to win Patchouli- I trust Michelyn’s test.
    US

  • WOW !!! I ave never read about perfumes which are aged in different types of barrel.
Interesting story about becoming perfumer (or founder fragrance brand) from rock musician.
i would like to test all this perfume aged in different barrel or same ingredient in all barrels.
But I would very happy to win VBO.
    USA

  • Pretty cool story and concept. First for me hearing of them. Would love to try all but for now I’d go with either VBO or OBO. Thanks for the draw, California

  • Hey Everybody,
Giant heartfelt thanks to all for your thoughtful and encouraging comments during our official launch week. It’s super cool to hear that you dig the American Oak Barrel aging idea and that you’re intrigued by the fragrances. Connecting with informed and involved fragrance lovers like you is what it’s all about for us. Your interest and support is a real driving force behind the indie movement…so, again, big thanks! And very special thanks to Michelyn and her crew for the amazing CaFleureBon! All the best, Steve and Michael

PS Bubeto – nice I spy on the ORO fragrance on the samples list! Yes, you are correct, that batch is still in the works and will become available later this summer.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

The barrel-aging process sounds very cool! I think my husband, a rum aficionado, would be very interested in these! He home ages cocktails in used barrels. I’d love to enter for one of these – perhaps the Santal in golden rum. I’m in the USA.

  • Ooh, this sounds fantastic! Aging whiskey in different types of barrels really influences the final result, so this could be really interesting… I’m interested in the Santal with juniper notes in the gin barrel, but the vanilla might be nice too. In the us, thank you for the informative review and interview.

  • doveskylark says:

I love the idea of ageing fragrances in American oak barrels. It is new innovations like this that really define American perfumery. I like that Michael and Steve play music. The shoutout to Ry Cooder is very appropriate.
I would choose the Smoked Oud.
    I live in the USA.

  • citizenkage says:

I absolutely LOVE the idea of steeping fragrances in oak barrels. These all sound so great. I love rum and bourbon accords so this would be great for me. What a cool idea. I vape, and some of the best vape juice I use is steeped in oak barrels(Castle Long Reserve). Some of the craft beer I like to drink is also steeped in oak barrels. Next in line for me is perfume steeped in oak barrels. Thanks for the opportunity. USA, Florida.
