You got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat
And a brand-new pair of shoes
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all, a moment in the sun
It’s a-gone and you can tell that one goodbye.

Oh, put me in, coach
I’m ready to play today
Put me in, coach
I’m ready to play today
Look at me, I can be centerfield

Wrigley Field Chicago Cubs

Wrigley Field was built in 1914

When the Blocki family contacted Michelyn and me about their latest fragrance, Fielder’s Leather, I admit to a stealthy frisson of delight. What a marvelous concept – evoking the nostalgic tenderness of a well-loved and much-used baseball glove! Baseball, one of the great American passions, is the harbinger of spring and summer pleasures. This comes from a woman who has never quite figured out what is going on in the field (organized team sports are not my forte), but enjoys being swept up into the blazing heat and excitement of it all. After all, Boston is a Baseball Town, and we love our Red Sox, even if they’re having a deplorable season. The Blocki family are native Chicagoans, so they absolutely get it: they adore their Cubs, no matter what. There is a great story which accompanies Fielder’s Leather – and as is their wont, the Blockis always create fragrances which resonate deeply with their sense of civic and family pride. Perfume is personal to them, and a shared family endeavor – which renders them quite special to us at ÇaFleureBon.

Season Pass to Chicago Cubs

 Fred Blocki’s Season’s Pass

A little background: founder John Blocki began composing perfumes in 1865, at a time when American perfumery was still in its infancy. His son Fred was such an avid baseball fan that he was granted an American League Pass – which in those days (the early 1900s) signified that he had free admission to all Major League games for life. In fact, Fred was part of a syndicate which attempted to purchase the Chicago Cubs in 1914. His group was unsuccessful; Fred was outbid by Charles Weeghman, who purchased the Cubs in 1916 and built Weeghman Park, later to be resold to William Wrigley, Jr., in 1921. Renamed as Wrigley Field, it became the second-oldest major league park (Boston’s Fenway Park is the oldest).

Rogers Hornsby via Wiki

“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” – Rogers Hornsby, infielder for the Chicago Cubs from 1929-32

How does Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather smell – and how does it make you feel? In a word: comfortable. Relaxed, untroubled, at ease: choose your alternative, if you will – as long as you acknowledge how precious it is to be surrounded by the warmth of familiarity, fond memory, and a sense of being cosseted. Unlike other leather-inspired fragrances, this one truly captures a cherished, weathered item – perhaps one handed down through the generations. That alone makes the aroma venerable, and gentle. As we know, a brand-new baseball glove will smell entirely different and much more raw than one which has seen the seasons come and go, and passed from hand to hand over the years. There is a patina, a malleability which only develops with time.

A little poetic license is helpful. Who am I to question what is intended by listing sunshine and wildflower as part of the given scent pyramid? We all need to keep a few trade secrets up our sleeve now and then. What I experience as I wear Fielder’s Leather is an amplified sensation of fresh air and fair weather, wrapped up in a leather which invites you to press it to your cheek and close your eyes. This perfume is smooth; it glows with the oils which emanate from one’s own skin burnished with amber, vetiver, and the sun-baked beauty of Atlas cedar. Brisk citrus notes introduce the more intense base ones, with an undefined soft floralcy bridging top and bottom. A little mystery is a fine thing; what matters is that Fielder’s Leather works. It wears lightly, effortlessly, and intimately. This fragrance is not a beast, although it conjures the animal hide from which it was fashioned; there is more insinuation than proclamation about the way it asserts its presence.

 Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather

Is Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather a reasonable blind purchase? I would have to say yes – providing that you appreciate a supple leather which is realistically portrayed, artistic, and nuanced. This perfume reveals a narrative which develops and evolves, a quality which seems ever more scarce in modern perfumery. It is so easy to wear and enjoy – and suitable for any scenario one might wish to dream up. How many fragrances are in your closet that you only reach for on special occasions? I’d warrant that, if you are a perfume devotee, there are quite a few. Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather is patently not one of those; it always feels just right. You don’t have to think about it, you simply wear it and feel wonderful.

Notes: green mandarin, bergamot, sunshine, leather, wildflower, Atlas cedar, vetiver, amber

I imagine this fragrance being a supple and soft leather scent. Not too rush and more nostalgic than some of the animatic leathers one can find out there. Notes like amber and bergamot lift up the overall composition giving it a spring edge. I can see the inspiration with Wrigley Field as I have visited it and it’s truly a perfect marriage between old and new. Love the inspiration behind this fragrance and the feeling it evokes. I’m located in the USA.

  • What a brilliant fusion of history, sport, and art! Blocki’s Fielder’s Leather, inspired by Wrigley Field and featuring a collaboration with Lionel Nesbitt, sounds like a multi-layered masterpiece. The concept is incredibly strong, promising a fragrance that is both familiar and entirely new. The description makes it sound like it captures the very soul of the ballpark experience. This is definitely a release I’m looking forward to hearing more about and hopefully smelling.

A fragrance that is a safe blind buy and feels right for any occasion. I love fragrances that fit that description. Also, something that is inspired by America’s favorite pastime. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I love leather. A realistic and nuanced take on the leather of a baseball glove sounds very satisfying. Something I could wear to the ballpark. If I ever actually make it to game again which is something I haven’t done in a very long time. I’m in the USA.

Ida, a wonderful read for me. Your article and the inspiration for this Blocki creation conjured up memories of my baseball days as a youth, as well as, my days as a young dad teaching my boys and my baby girl about the game and the lessons it presented. I’m looking forward to this same experience with my grandchildren. The notes in this fragrance seem to be a perfect match for this time of the season…after all, it’s baseball season 🙂

  • It was appealing to read this perfume is “easy to wear and enjoy”. Plus I was pleased to see all the baseball references. US

  • I love the idea of an airy, brighter take on leather. I own a few of Blocki’s fragrances and appreciate their easy, unfussy take on vintage-inspired fragrances. This Grand Affair is a winter favorite, and I’ll be breaking out my bottle of For Walks now that the weather is warmer. I’d appreciate the chance to experience Fielder’s Leather.

  • Wow, what a fantastic idea for a scent. Every male in my family played ball. My father was a short stop. I, as a young girl, played first base. I remember that scent of standing in the infield, glove at the ready, with the bees buzzing around. And in my neighborhood, after a game in the hot sun, our coach would usher us all across the street to the little blue house that had the snowball machine on the front porch and he would buy each of us a cup of ice dripping with syrup and if you were really lucky, marshmallow fluff. Again, the perfect muse. In maryland.

  • As a fan of unisex fragrances, leather based fragrances always appeal to. I liked the inspiration behind Fielder’s Leather. I loved how Rogers Hornsby would “stare out the window and wait for spring.” I would do the same during my softball playing years. Thanks for another fantastic review and draw. MI USA

  • Ooh it is that time of year! I love love love baseball. I’m not a sports fan especially team sports. But baseball is my secret exception. I grew up listening to the games on AM Radio (yeah I’m old) and I still love following a game that way. And 2 out of 3 of my sons were in little league and one even did travel ball. I took them to the AAA or AA games growing up – places that still had an organ player and the crowd played silly games while we waited for the bases to get swept, fireworks in Saturday nights. I still have the gloves, caps and even some hats from my kids time in baseball and my dads old catchers glove! It’s a game like no other. Every body type and skill has its place and is needed on the team. Some of the most elegant moves ever done in sports were done on the field! Siiighhh lots of nostalgia. Back to perfume… I love Blocki’s For Walks – another nostalgic fragrance but with violets.
I am located in USA and hope to be the lucky duck!

This is truly fascinating! Fielder’s Leather sounds like a scent that would transport you right to the stands or even the field at Wrigley. The sensory details of a baseball game are so specific, and translating them into a wearable fragrance is a bold and exciting move by Blocki. The leather, the grass, the history – it all sounds like it would make for a rich and memorable perfume. Can’t wait for a chance to try it! from US

  • Very appropriate for the season, especially for baseball fans! When I think of leather fragrances, I usually picture a pair of women’s gloves or a jacket. I’ve never considered a fielder’s mitt but the combination of a sunshine laden spring day with wildflowers in bloom and the warm earthiness of the leather sounds perfect. MD, USA

As a lifelong baseball fan, former player, and current coach, this scent brings about so many emotions. Combining my two loves of baseball and fragrance together would be such an awesome thing for me. And the store about this fragrance and the meaning behind it was really interesting. An enjoyable read for sure.

I played for my high school softball team. I really wasn’t very good but I enjoyed playing. Now, in my late forties, I still have my high school glove in the garage and live for the spring when I can get it out for a little bit of catch. The smell is as nostalgic as Ida states and her review made me feel like a young adult again.

  • I love this concept for a Blocki fragrance, full of nostalgia and American imagery. Glad to hear the leather accord in Fielder’s Leather is “relaxed, untroubled, at ease,” since a well-used glove should be utterly comfortable and worn-in, and like Ida said, cherished. The fresh, sunny notes wrapped around that accord also are deftly applied. “Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather…always feels just right. You don’t have to think about it, you simply wear it and feel wonderful.” Sounds terrific!

  • Kensolfactoryodyssey says:

What really struck me in Ida’s review of Fielder’s Leather was the idea of scent as a vessel for memory and comfort. The way she described the leather as “cherished, weathered,” and even “cosseting” evoked a kind of emotional warmth you rarely see in leather fragrances, which often lean sharp or aggressive. I love the imagery of pressing a glove to your cheek and closing your eyes—so intimate and evocative. The notes of sunshine, wildflower, and Atlas cedar wrapped in vetiver and amber sound like the scent equivalent of a summer day at Wrigley Field, full of nostalgia and quiet joy. It feels like a fragrance I wouldn’t have to overthink, just wear and feel at ease in. That kind of effortless beauty is exactly what I’m always looking for.

ida’s review makes me nostalgic for baseball games, despite my experience being mostly that it was very hot in the sun & wishing the game would be over so i could get some shade. i feel like this perfume seems to capture an idealised american youth, spent outdoors in the sunshine and out on grassy fields, with yes, a leather baseball mitt. i’m always amazed by the creativity in fragrance, looking forward to searching out this one to sample one day!

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great writeup Ida.
I really enjoy leather in all it’s formats – smooth, supple, animalic, waxy. I love how simple this composition is and how the leather is supported with wildflowers, cedar and vetiver.

    Would love to sample this.

I adoreeee leather in perfumery. I used to only buy perfumes that have frankincense but lately my focus has shifted to leathers and this seems right up my alley. I love when a perfume can transcend demographics like this clearly does. Ida states that she has no real affinity for the sport and yet this perfume that is an homage to it still manages to transport her mind regardless and that tells me that they have something special here I’d love to try.

  • Ida, what a fantastic read! Your article—and the inspiration behind this Blocki creation—stirred up such vivid memories for me. Absolutely fascinating! Fielder’s Leather sounds like a scent that could whisk you straight to the stands—or even onto the field at Wrigley. The sensory details of a baseball game are so distinct, and the idea of translating them into a wearable fragrance is such a bold, exciting move by Blocki. The leather, the grass, the history—it all seems like it would blend into a rich, unforgettable perfume. I can’t wait to experience it for myself! From US

  • What appeals to me most about this review is the way it describes the scent as something familiar, calming, and consistent — all things I deeply value. As a 51-year-old autistic man, I find comfort in things that feel grounded and predictable, yet still have layers I can explore over time on my own terms. The idea that this fragrance smells like a worn-in, well-loved object — like an old leather glove passed down through generations — resonates with me. I often connect emotionally to objects that carry history and memory, and the scent seems to reflect that kind of quiet storytelling.

I also appreciate that the perfume isn’t described as overwhelming or attention-seeking. I can be very sensitive to strong or chaotic scents, so the mention of Fielder’s Leather being smooth, subtle, and intimate is reassuring. It sounds like a scent that respects my space — something that’s there with me, rather than pushing itself onto me. That sense of ease and gentleness makes it feel safe and approachable.

The poetic descriptions — like wildflowers, sunshine, and sun-warmed cedar — may sound abstract, but I actually understand them as sensory cues. They help me imagine how the scent might feel emotionally: open, soft, maybe even a little nostalgic. The idea that it’s easy to wear, every day, without needing a reason or special event, is especially appealing. I don’t like having to overthink decisions like when to wear a fragrance. Something that just feels “right” every time — that’s exactly what I look for.

  • This is an interesting take on leather fragrances. Typically think of leather as a fall or winter note but the other notes make this a summery sounding leather. Plus baseball is the boys of summer. Usa

  • This is paying homage to the Americas greatest pastime as we enter the season that it’s played. The freshness and airy nature is what I’m looking at this spring/summer. I like how it’s composition reads and I’m really excited to see how it wears. Comfortable and relaxing is how one owner described it’s wearing. That’s right up my alley but I’m not sure it’s as weak as sum perceived it to be. Would love to win. From Jacksonville, NC.

I tried to go see the Boston Red Sox, but when I was in town they were playing the Yankees and there was not a ticket available. I recently gifted my grandson his dad’s baseball glove from little league. My son was surprised I kept it all those years. That it wears light and effortless is perfect sounding for this spring season. That it could be a blind buy is bonus. Thanks for the memories of baseball and the chance to win this. USA.
