Blocki Press Club (Michelle Bruckmann) 2023 + Billiards and Journalists Giveaway

The aroma of woods and spices drifts over the table as perfumer, John Blocki, cues a game of three-cushion. It is 1925 and the newsgatherers in the Press Club billiard room are determined to get the scoop. Rub shoulders with these social buccaneers and the cosmopolitan celebrities, sharp-witted orators, and famous artists and writers that flock to the Press Club’s legendary soirees.” ~ Press Club copy via Blocki website

John Blocki, founder of Blocki

Founder and perfumer John Blocki of Blocki initially set up shop in Chicago, 1865 – right on the heels of the American Civil War. He had been apprenticed, at a young age – as a chemist to a local pharmacist.  American perfumery was in its infancy then: admittedly, Caswell-Massey preceded it by 113 years, in 1752 (Newport, Rhode Island). Clearly, no one can compete with claiming the patronage of first president George Washington – but John Blocki certainly proved his place. New Orleans’ Bourbon French came into its own in 1843, Hové in 1931, and Crabtree and Evelyn in Cambridge, Massachusetts as late as 1971. Although the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 demolished Blocki’s business, he quickly rebuilt and flourished. He was a determined man indeed.

Perfumer Michelle Bruckmann of Berje has brilliantly employed the elegant materials of this family-owned-and-operated fragrance house (both Berje and Blocki fit this description) to splendid effect with her evocation of the nexus of pundits and wits: Blocki Press Club.

She might have elected to depict a smoke-filled room populated by the ardent and profusely perspiring; instead, she has chosen to paint a contemporary portrait of the well-groomed and erudite literati who congregate, combining leisure with competitive amiability and astute observation. Press Club is all this, and considerably more: with soigné aplomb, it culls the allure of herb, spice, a kiss of conifer, and the precious attributes of incense and amber – deftly executed with a lightness of being, a measure of finesse.

The pen is mightier than the sword if the sword is very short, and the pen is very sharp.” ~  author Terry Pratchett

Overstuffed, well-worn leather chairs are tucked into the corners of this close chamber where business mixes with pleasure; we are aware of their august, shabby presence as we sling our legs over a tatty arm. All deals are not brokered at the billiard table, perhaps – but the dissemination of information surely is, especially as liquor loosens both tongue and inhibition. Gilded saffron infers leather; clove and amber recall what is best about the barbershop and a straight edge shave. The impeccable tonicity of bergamot, armoise (artemisia or mugwort), and rosemary promote a sense of wellbeing and good grooming – the seemingly effortless art of single-minded sophistication. Serpentine coils of incense are woven throughout the fragrance, imparting intrigue while grounding  Blocki Press Club for those amongst us who find ourselves earthbound. After all, true journalism requires both feet firmly planted in the real world, not a fantasy. The chosen Press Club participants never skip a beat while smelling like a million.

Blocki Press Club may have commenced, at its conception – as a scent intended for men, but limiting its prospective audience pays it short shrift. Deliciously dry and faintly piratical, it is a pleasure to be shared. Its waggish charm glows on every skin.

Notes: bergamot, armoise, rosemary, saffron, cypress, clove, olibanum, amber

I enjoyed mentions of the straight edge shave, a sense of well being with good grooming, and smelling like a million. I live in Maryland USA.

The serpentine coil of incense definitely intrigues me the most. Sounds like a nice addition to an otherwise clean, barbershop scent.

Wow such a reminder of wonderful times.
This makes me think back to the heady days when I was a reckless freelancer, working the Mediterranean and Near-East, during 2011 and 2012 – stepping out of the road noise and protests on the street into the Zappeion courtyard in Athens where the Press Corps had erected a staging area for the emergency elections underway.
I walked in, bandana around my sun-reddened neck, hair falling in my eye and scruffy from travel, suddenly surrounded by suits and ties, financial news commentators; bright screens with remote broadcasts about ‘austerity’ – and there in the corner, away from the catch lights and Fougere… 3 khaki vests in a dark corner waving me over, where we shared a whiskey, a cigarette, and few stories from the beat. I always remember the smell of rubber camera cables, church incense, and the arid city concrete from those days… a different era and place, but, the essence still very much alive.

I’m intrigued by the incense & amber & “kiss of conifer” (gorgeous phrase)—& I definitely want to smell like a member of the “erudite literati.” In the US.

  • I loved getting the history of Blocki, whose fragrances I have sampled before. Also, you quoted one of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett. Press Club sounds very intriguing!

  • Thanks for sharing the history of Blocki.
I get the “promote a sense of wellbeing and good grooming – the seemingly effortless art of single-minded sophistication.”
When a fragrance promotes those aspects in life and lifestyle, a fragrance like Press Club can boost you to achieve those mindsets.

  • My oh my, this sounds like a soiree that I would love to attend. Leather, incense, spices, and ambers a plenty. All this recent talk of AI interfaces such as ChatGP makes me wonder if this is a fragrance it might spit out if one told it to make the scent of a Victorian era man. I love Ida’s description of Press Club as “deliciously dry and faintly piratical.” That makes it sound so sexy to me as I just love arid fragrances on a guy, myself included, especially ones with a touch of bad boy thrown into the mix. I would love the opportunity to get my nose on this one. I live in NC, USA.

  • The history is interesting. Clove & incense is all you need to say to get my attention. In the USA

What a fascinating history for a brand. We often forget that France is not the only country with a long history of perfumery. The scent sounds incredibly elegant.

Press Club by Blocki when described by Ida, paints a scene I would love to be a part of. Leather chairs, billiards, liquor in a glass, a chamber where these notes commence. Herb, spice, conifer, incense and amber…all set the scene for what I imagine this mature, beautiful fragrance represents. I would love to wear something like this for my weekly outing with my partner where we play a couple games of pool in a nearby pub.

  • I loved learning about Blocki’s storied history and the nostalgic, literary evocations of Ida’s review. This sounds like a really lovely and interesting twist on a classic masculine scent; I’m intrigued! I live in New York.

  • Fantastic review by Ida.
I love all the concept behind the fragrance and the richness that the brand has, just amazing.
I think that Blocki Press Club is the perfect fragrance to use as a journalist, but you can totally rock it if you are a perfume lover. I love that it is bright, but also have power in it with the saffron notes. Would love to try it.
    USA here.

  • Apart from the note breakdown I think that bottle is very handsomely designed. The detail work in the cap and the simple font layout is a great combo. Thanks for the opportunity, Southern California here.

What excites me about this house is its deep history. Being from Boston I’m surrounded by history & I really appreciate the decades of hard work to keep this brand afloat.

  • Really fascinating piece Ida. I’ve ever heard of John Blocki and was unaware of the history of American perfumers and perfume houses. The Press Club setting brings to mind specific images; certainly the leather chairs and wood paneling make an appearance as well as the spice notes in traditional men’s cologne. I love Ida’s description of the fragrance as “deliciously dry and faintly piratical”. TIL of the existence of the word piratical. MD, USA.

  • Older, masculine, barbers shop is this Rive Gauche Pour Homme 2.0? Liked the Iconic Rive so much in my 20’s I went thru a couple of bottles.

I’m hoping this can replace that. By the accords it has a chance since nothing has for me.

    Thanks from the USA

  • Press Club sounds very intriguing! Ida’s description matches the photo, which matches the image I have in my mind. I imagine a full, rich smelling fragrance. New Jersey, USA

  • Excellent review, Ida! I enjoyed reading about John Blocki’s work in the mid-1800s and where Michelle Bruckmann drew inspiration for Press Club. I immediately noticed the header photo of the bottle; I love the attention-grabbing Art Deco type, an intricately patterned cap, and the understated colorway. The fragrance itself sounds equally measured, with a subtle nod to leather, barbershop tonics, and traces of incense. Would love to try this one.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • What appeals to me about Ida’s review is the way she paints this clear picture of what she associates this perfume with. Being well groomed and having discussions over billiards DOES gives me a sense of well-being. This makes sense when you notice the brightness at the top symbolizes pleasure and darkness in the base to symbolize business.
    Cheers from Illinois, USA

Thanks for the great review Ida.

This review makes me thing of sitting in a leather chair at a speakeasy, enjoying the ambience of Chicago.

It’s quite interesting that the scent notes do not list leather.

I am very interested in trying this fragrance from Blocki. Incense, conifer, cloves are some of my favorite things used in perfumery, and this fragrance seems to have them. I first heard about Blocki and Le Jardin Retrouve from Cafleurebon, and ever since then, I’ve been interested to see what these resurrected fragrance companies have available (luckily, I got to try a discovery set from Maison Violet, another resurrected fragrance company, and I’m glad that I did). Ida’s review caused me to be very intrigued to try “Press Club”, and I’m, interested to smell the elegant materials which Blocki uses. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • I had not heard of Blocki before. Ida described the history of this brand along with some of American perfumery. This is why I love Cafleurebon. You learn something in every article and review. I am intrigued by Blocki Press Club, a trip back in time to press club meetings, with smells of leather, barbershop aftershave lotions, clove, bergamot, amber, saffron, and the like. Comforting and exclusive smells of an era gone by. Old world glowing – I’d love to try Blocki Press Club. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

  • Upon reading Ida’s review, I was transported back in time and could almost picture myself walking into the Press Club in the 1920s, surrounded by a scene reminiscent of a classic film noir. As a lover of perfumery, I appreciate how it has the power to take us on a sensory journey through time, much like the way movies can transport us to different eras and locations.
    Thank you!

  • Outstanding review by Ida. What I enjoyed about Blocki Press Club is the Serpentine coil of incense and amber note. Thanks for such a great giveaway! Greetings from the USA.
