Lily Pulitzer said it best, “Despite the forecast, live like it’s spring.” With hope in our hearts that soon we can safely unmask and stroll through the park arm in arm, here is part 2 of our favorite spring fragrances.

Etat Libre d’Orange Archives 69 (Christine Nagel) 2011: Every sunny spring day seems like the promise of winter’s end, but then a colder day comes along like a devastating setback. During those last weeks of winter, cozy indoor smells become oppressive and the deep, mysterious fragrances that suited colder weather are no longer compelling. Enter the insouciant Archives 69 by Etat Libre d’Orange. Sometimes it wears as peppery pink bubblegum, snapping between someone’s teeth. Other days, it is slightly camphorous, proffering an effervescent incense. It’s a changeable fragrance for a changeable season, perfect for that wild urge to throw caution to the wind and go outside anyway, even with mud on the ground and icy tree branches. Notes: pink berries, tangerine, pepper leaf, orchid & prune JE, benzoin, camphor, incense, patchouli, musk. Dalya Azaria, Sr. Contributor @theperfumeddahlia
Soon to be magnolias – by Emmanuelle Varron
Matière Première Parisian Musc (Aurélien Guichard) 2019: Springtime in Paris was quite magical: we loved walking by the Seine warmed by the sunshine, spotting green leaves on trees, wearing lighter clothes… and meeting our friends. Parisian Musc is one of my favorite spring fragrances and the perfect perfumed outfit: a woody musk, light but very chic, that goes straight to the point. You cannot miss its fruity-vegetal start, where the fig pairs with ambrette. Cedar wood adds depth and sensuality that is heaven on skin: you get the fruit and the branch united. The ambrettolide supreme brings the musky side, clean and enveloping, that augments the milky facet of the fig; thanks to ambroxan, woody and musky notes link together like a couple in love. Aurélien Guichard created an unexpected modern musk that embraces its softer side Notes: fig, ambrette seed Peru, cedar wood essence Virginia, ambrettolide supreme, ambroxan –Emmanuelle Varron, Senior Contributor

Ormonde Jayne Woman (Linda Pilkington with perfumer Geza Schoen) 2002: in the past month, the Namib desert was covered with lilies. For the past 10 years they laid dormant, covered in darkness and the rustle of the sand, just beneath the surface under the foot of wandering teeth, in slumber. And then the water came, and what’s ingrained in their beautiful gene helix was once again stronger, and they sprouted, and they bloomed. This past year left many of us bone-dry of life, vital shine, and creation. It’s chewed our juices, drained our essence, and buried us in a slumber close to emotional disapparition—and very few things are there left to move, and ignite, our nature. Ormonde Jayne Woman is my personal appeal to myself, to once more shake the dust and break through. It’s what happens before germination, when you need to go deep and find yourself. Notes: cardamom, coriander, grass oil, black hemlock, violet, jasmine, vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, amber.- dana sandu, @a_nose_knows
Citron Boboli image by Kaya Bagamaz for Le Jardin Retrouve
Le Jardin Retrouvé Citron Boboli (Yuri Gutsatz) 1977: After the torpor of lockdown and winter, what could be more revitalizing than an effervescent citrus fragrance? And not just any citrus fragrance, because at the hands of the remarkably well travelled perfumer, Yuri Gutsatz, this citrus classic merges with the exotic Indian spices he fell in love with. The lemon, orange and lime never leave this dazzling scent, but are tamed into a benevolent accord of spiced lemon, bringing dancing thoughts of far away places to a balmy spring evening as the sun goes down. Sun drenched citrus groves meet exotic spices. The botanical meets the gourmand in perfect harmony. Notes: lemon, lime, orange, galbanum, petitgrain, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, geranium, vanilla, musk

Lilac Photo by Elise Pearlstine
Ineke After My Own Heart (Ineke Ruhland) 2006: After My Own Heart brings back precious moments of my childhood, memories of happy days. I lived in a small basement apartment in Brooklyn and my grandmother had a tiny plot of dirt near the curb where lilacs grew, seemingly through the concrete. I must have been three years old, maybe younger and stuck my nose into the blooms, giddy with joy. There are many lilac fragrances, each have a certain beauty, but for me After My Own Heart is the most photo-realistic lilac scent there is. Others rave about the transparent watercolor sheerness of Frederic Malle En Passant, but that bottle is half-full on my dresser. I drained all but the last drops from my original bottle of After My Own Heart a soliflore that evokes the entire lilac- the flower, the stem, and the leaves with a hint of woody musk in the drydown. It is one of the most hopeful fragrances I have ever smelled and one of all-time favorite spring fragrances.
