Best of Show Esxence 2023 Show stand-outs

As a follow-up to my Esxence trends article and to close our team’s event reports, I present to you my Best of Show.

I fell for fragrances of such obvious and above all timeless beauty that they stood out a bit, immutable to trends. Perfumes that you can imagine still smelling in ten years and still find relavant. There is of Le Galion L’Astre (Rodrigo Flores-Roux), which I reviewed before Esxence 2023 opening on March 31 and which will undoubtedly be in my top 10 for 2023: a real ultra sensual olfactory fireworks and homage to Ava Gardner.

Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul Parfumeurs du Monde Blanc de Chine Francesca Dell Oro Else Le Galion L'Astre Jacques Fath L'Iris de Fath Esxence 2023 best of show

Best of Show Esxence 2023 Show stand-outs: Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul, Parfumeurs du Monde Blanc de Chine, Francesca Dell’Oro Else, Le Galion L’Astre, Jacques Fath L’Iris de Fath – ©Emmanuelle Varron.

Also Jacques Fath L’iris de Fath Eau de Parfum version (Patrice Revillard), which I had the chance to discover a few months ago in Rania Naim’s studio. Is it possible to find this version even more beautiful than the Extrait (Michelyn’s review here). The iris is even more magnified, more realistic, with a peach note that brings a delicious sweetness, without losing its nobility.

One of the perfumes that I was most looking forward to was Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul. Céline Verleure, founder and DA of the brand, told me last year that Marc-Antoine Corticchiato was finalizing a series of three perfumes dedicated to the Sepia collection (the one with bottles dressed in fawn leather). Unlike the first two series created by Bertrand Duchaufour, then Dominique Ropion, “MAC”’s trilogy dedicated to tea will require a little patience, since the three perfumes will be released independently, a few months apart. With Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul, Marc-Antoine Corticchiato pays homage to Lapsang Souchong, a smoked tea with woody notes. Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul opens with great delicacy, patiently unveiling the famous smoky notes of this majestic tea associated with vetiver and osmanthus with delicious apricot notes. The seaweed absolute brings a mineral facet of a beautiful contrast, illuminated by jasmine and rose. I have only one desire: to discover Marc-Antoine Corticchiato two other creations!

I had the chance to smell Parfumeurs du Monde Blanc de Chine (Patrice Revillard) at a Jovoy event a few weeks ago, and had found wonderful. At Esxence 2023, it was very slightly modified at the (perfectionist) perfumer’s initiative. Flawless. A solar gardenia, a bit juicy (thanks osmanthus), carried by jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang, then warmed by sandalwood, opoponax, benzoin and styrax. 100% natural, an unprecedented exercise for Patrice Revillard, who also won over Thierry Bernard, founder of Parfumeurs du Monde: “It is perfect.”

I also  liked  Francesca Dell’Oro Else (Michele Marin), a tribute perfume to Arthur Schnitzler’s new Miss Else. Even before identifying the notes, you can smell a universe of drama and passion, Eros and Thanatos, which shines through. Absolutely decadent, Francesca Dell’Oro Else plays the card of sensuality without barriers: a floral bouquet with vintage accents (rose, carnation, champaca, iris, lily of the valley, heliotrope) embellished with cassia, patchouli and saxony moss. An ode to the 19th century and its many artistic currents that can be admired in museums.

Best of Show Esxence 2023 Indie Innovations

Ellen Dahlgren Ruler Eau de Boujee Verdant OHTOP Paranoiaque Bel Rebel & the pea Toskovat Génération Godard

Indie innovations: Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler, Eau de Boujee Verdant, OHTOP Paranoïaque, Bel Rebel …& the pea, Toskovat Génération Godard and David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, the brand founder and perfumer – ©Emmanuelle Varron.

Here are some new brands and fragrances not necessarily following current trends. Let’s talk about Ellen Dahlgren, whose work I had discovered through her superb Parfumeurs du Monde Tjärn. The Swedish perfumer presented two outstanding creations. My Favorite is Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler which, on paper, could seem like a classic composition. But working on the balance between raw materials really makes the difference, with juicy, green and tangy rhubarb. Myrrh, tonka bean and rose create an elegant and refined facet, with patchouli, benzoin and vanilla providing a comforting warmth in the background.

I also had the chance (thank you Pep!) to discover Eau de Boujee, a collection created by Pia Long and Nick Gilbert. At Esxence 2023, I fell in love with Eau de Boujee Verdant, an ode to nature that reclaims its rights in this world invaded by concrete. Among the raw materials that stand out, a cactus accord, tomato leaf, Timut pepper and a facet of intense white flowers with a hint of a “concrete” accord that I vaguely perceive… Of course, as nature wins! Then, once back in Paris, I rediscovered Eau de Boujee Gilded, a multifaceted, warm, bewitching and spicy incense where myrrh, beeswax, leather, civet, labdanum… and a “gold” accord also coexist. A papal, introspective perfume… superb!

Another curiosity, the Franco-Korean brand OHTOP and especially OHTOP Paranoïaque (Roméo Oh and Carbonnel) where antagonisms are omnipresent in the composition, and disconcerting on the skin: the brand reveals notes of grapefruit, blackcurrant, coriander, patchouli and amber. My nose would like to add the galbanum as its raw and earthy aspect is present. Very conceptual on blotter, OhTop Paranoïaque proves to be “easier” to wear on the skin.

In line with my with love of vegetable notes last year, I naturally loved Bel Rebel … & the pea (Jean-Christophe Hérault). A crunchy green pea, impressively realistic, which gradually blends into the magnolia and retains all its originality and naturalness thanks to a hint of lavender. Cedar brings structure to this slightly crazy fragrance, which envelops the skin over the hours with a good dose of musk. The brand’s blotters, rather short and wide and pierced with multitudes of tiny holes, were a “must-see”.

This is without a doubt my big favorite of Essence 2023: Toskovat’, a Romanian brand, which I had spotted in mid-March on Instagram thanks to Cristian Marianciuc, our former contributor. At booth S11, I discovered David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi, a young artist who got into perfume without any training, creating on instinct, with his memory as his muse. David-Lev claims the right to nostalgia, without seeking a conventional olfactory harmony… quite the contrary! Several of his fragrances from the “Extrait de mémoire” collection impressed me, even stunned me. My Favorite is Toskovat’ Génération Godard, a lightly indulgent popcorn with tobacco and musk notes, paying homage to the atmosphere of movie theaters and, of course, to the illustrious Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard. Not to forget Toskovat’ F2, a chypre revisited in a 2023 version, again stunning.

Eau de Boujee Verdant would be one I would love to try/wear. I love the idea of its sentiment being an olfactory illustration of nature and concrete. The cactus accord, tomato leaf, Timut pepper, and vibrant white flowers being the reflection of nature with a worldly touch of concrete accord. This sounds extremely appealing to me! Thank you for the review!

Wonderful review on Esxence, thank you Emmanuelle!

Most of all I was intrigued by this description: “cactus accord, tomato leaf, Timut pepper and a facet of intense white flowers with a hint of a “concrete” accord”. It really sounds like a piece of art! Eau de Boujee Rock it! I had their candles. And this description reminds me of their Succulent candle which was soo refreshing, juicy and good! So I would love to try Verdant once. I am also interested in Bel Rebel’s … & the pea which also contains the concept of a green fresh fragrance.

    I am from EU.

  • I enjoyed getting know about very intriguing and beautiful fragrances. I would love to try Le Galion L’Astre. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Thanks for making this a multi-page article Emmanuelle!

I didn’t think you’d fit all your experiences in one article and look forward to reading many more!

Jasques Fath is the first Perfumer that I read about on CaFleureBon and decided to purchase some fragrances from.
I was not disappointed! I loved Green Water and Vers Le Sud which opened a whole new world of fragrances for me as someone who only bought the more popular designer fragrances.
I should not be a surprise that L’iris de Fath sounds VERY interesting to me and I look forward to trying this.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • So many wonderful fragrances highlighted here! Thank you, Emmanuelle for sharing your top picks. I know it couldn’t have been easy with so may excellent offerings coming out now. Of particular interest to me are:

Le Galion L’Astre – I love the history and story of this fragrance. Of course, I’m also intrigued by the composition – a floral quartet spiked by spices, ginger, and aromatics. Sounds great!

Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul – I am really getting into tea fragrances and it seems as if Lapsang Souchong might be a new trend in the tea fragrance world. The new Arquiste Indigo Smoke is but one example of recent releases using this particular prized smoked tea. I love when it is combined with cooling incense and I imagine it playing very well with the mineralic seaweed in Smoky Soul.

Eau de Boujee Gilded – I love a good incense-based perfume and this seems to be an interesting take. Leather, civet, and myrrh sound fantastic but it is the curious gold accord that has my mind in overdrive trying to imagine what it would smell like.

Toskovat’ Génération Godard – I love when fragrances push boundaries and hover over that line where they are dangerously close to being a novelty scent but are surprisingly wearable. This one sounds like it would fit that description perfectly. Popcorn and tobacco – intended to make you think of an old movie theater…yes, please.

I’m dying to get my nose on these now. Thank you again for sharing with us. I live in NC, USA.

  • What I enjoy is reading about perfumes I otherwise wouldn’t know of and also a bit about them. From the article above I’d like to try L’iris de Fath Eau de Parfum. US

  • Emmanuelle! ❤️❤️❤️ Amazing finds! I want to experience every single one! ❤️
    Le Galion L’Astra sounds divine!

A beautiful description by Emmanuel really looking forward to Smoky Soul by Olfactive Studio. Thanks a million

  • I had the chance to smell Parfumeurs du Monde Blanc de Chine (Patrice Revillard) at a Jovoy event a few weeks ago, and had found wonderful. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Thanks to Emmanuelle, I discovered some new perfumes and houses. I like it that she took notice of some new indie brands and fragrances not necessarily following current trends.
The one I’d most like to try is Parfumeurs du Monde Blanc de Chine – solar gardenia carried by jasmine, orange blossom and ylang-ylang. I’m also interested in Toskovat’ Génération Godard – a lightly indulgent popcorn with tobacco and musk notes souns so interesting.

  • Patricia R. says:

L’Astre by Galion is the one I’d like to try, followed by Jack Fath’s Iris. Galion for the solid, traditional looking bottle, as I can’t imagine the juice. Slovakia

  • Beautiful list Emmanuelle!. I amd so glad that Marc-Antoine Corticchiato (Perfums de Empire is a must) made it to the best of show and he worked with Olfactive Studio to create a series around tea. Smoky Soul is in my list already of what I would love to try. As a lover of scented candles and Boujee Bougies are in the top three , I am very excited that they launch Boujee perfumes and Verdant sounds an amazing nature green scent in the middle of the concrete we live : Love the notes they use Timut pepper, Tomato leaf, and Cactus accord… I live in Spain, EU.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

I really enjoyed how Emmanuelle brought us the exciting feeling of Esxence, like I was actually there!!
These are some magnificent choices and I’d just looooove to try Toskovat’ Génération Godard beacause I’m a huge fan of cinema and popocorn!
    Hello from EU.

  • Along with, of course, Le Galion L’Astre, I would love to check out Smoky Soul with its notes of vetiver, tea and osmanthus. Emmanuelle’s review makes me interested in it, along with Bel Rebel … & the pea (pea smell in a perfume – not sure I will like it, but am intrigued nevertheless). Eau de Boujee Verdant too, due to its incense notes. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. From continental USA.

  • I guess the sheer amount of new perfumes is either a great thing or a bad thing (just depending on your opinion) – sure having more choices is good but maybe the speed at which things are being released dilutes down the market? Things are the way they are though. The Jacques Fath Iris scent seems the most intriguing of the ones mentioned as I remember reading another article about it. Thanks for the opportunity – Southern CA here.

  • Once again, so many houses and releases to catch up with!
I was particularly smitten by the description of Blanc de chine with its 100% natural composition revolving around my ever-loved white flowers, then Paranoiaque, with its unique name and blend of notes, as well as the stunning tea in Smokey Soul.
Of course L’astre with its tribute to Ava Gardner also must be something to remember. I’d love to try any of those.
    Commenting from the EU, cheers!

  • I’m picking one from the show standouts Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul. Smoky tea with apricot notes make this a healthy choice.
The leather covered bottle looks super cool too.

    Thanks again from the US

  • Another great review. Thank you!
I Love Le Galion, L’Ame Perdue is one of my favorite perfume.

  • I really enjoy how Emmanuelle’s “Best of Show Esxence 2023 Part 2” presents a curated report of unique, interesting and special new fragrances. I learned a lot. The fragrances I’d most like to try are Le Galion L’Astre and L’iris de Fath Eau de Parfum.
    In the U.S.

  • Thank you for the review on Excence 2023 Emmanuelle. It seems like there was a lot of new and interesting fragrances to experience. I’ve tried a few Jacques Fath scents over the year and I find it an exceptional fragrance house. I’m an iris fan and am looking forward to trying a sample of L’Iris de Fath. Since Le Galion L’Astre was created as an homage to Ava Gardner with ulta-sensual fireworks, I know that’s a must try as well. MD, USA

  • Great to have a part 2 because part 1 got me so hooked, Emmanuelle.
It is great to know which new fragrances are outstanding so I could look for them and try.
I would love to try Le Galion L’astre, Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler and Jacques Fath L’iris de Fath Eau de Parfum. They all look really promissing and would to put my nose on them soon.
    USA here.

  • The part of Emmanuelle’s “Best of Show Esxence 2023 Part 2” that I really enjoyed was the Indie Innovations section. The new fragrances expose me to different scents or trends outside of the typical designer fragrances. The fragrance I would love to try would be Eau de Boujee Verdant based of the Cactus and concrete accord. From TX, YSA.

  • Thank You for this wonderful review. Of course, in this time of the year flowers are dominant – iris, rose, white flowers. I am impressed by the review of each perfume, but what especially drew my attention was Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul with its’ seaweed and smoky/woody/fruity/floral notes combination – sounds like a unique experience. I would also love to try Le Galion L’Astre as I have read the review on this perfume earlier and the description left me speechless – ginger and tuberose, those are my favorite notes so far. I believe this one would have a special place on my shelf. I live in Lithuania EU

  • I wish I could go to Esxence myself but Emmanuelle’s article/review is the next best thing. 🙂 Le Galion L’Astre sounds fantastic, ever since the standalone review I’ve been thinking about it, and seeing it mentioned again as a standout tour de force cements its place on my wishlist. I am in the USA, thank you for the draw!

  • Excellent and varied list, Emmanuelle. Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul caught my attention; I’m curious how it compares to something like Providence Perfume Co. Lapsang Lover, which lacks the Olfactive Studio perfume’s unusual seaweed note and stone fruit emphasis. Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler’s note list is also very intriguing (love a good rhubarb note), as are both Eau de Boujee mentions. Verdant sounds complex and Gilded combines everything I like in an incense fragrance. Finally, that popcorn note in Toskovat’ Génération Godard sounds really cool—it’s probably the fragrance I’d like to try most from this list.

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Gnossiennes says:

Thanks for your lovely choice and introductions, Emmanuelle.
There are so many intriguing launches this year! L’iris de Fath! While the extrait is a little too costly, I cannot miss the EdP, especially because of your high compliment.
Also very interested in the new trio of Olfactive Studio. MAC is literally the name I am going for. I wonder how the creations, with the art direction of Ms. Verleure will differ from his former creations.
On the indie side, I have been curious about Bel Rebel for a while. Unfortunately, it is not very available here yet. The pea note seems not very common in the perfumery nowadays and sounds definitely appealing.
And Toskovat’. Honestly, I can be ambivalent on their concept. As the notes disclosed are often so radical compared to the traditional ones that I cannot help but doubt its marketing nature. However, on the other hand, why pin the scents on the materials in the first place? It is true that scents can arouse our memories and get interpretted based on our experiences, isn’t it? I’d try their creations to see whether they are conceptually successful!
    Love from San Mateo, California.

  • foreverscents says:

I have enjoyed reading Emmanuelle’s summaries and roundups from this year’s Esxence event. This year has a richness of fragrances…they all sound mesmerizing! I am particularly interested in Blanc de Chine from Perfumeurs du Monde because of the gardenia and osmanthus. Bel Rebel’s …& the Pea intrigues me with green pea note.
    I live in the USA.

  • To read these reports, one gets a sense of how overwhelming it must be to be at Exsence, and just how much theere is to see there. I enjoy seeing what each writer finds of interest. Their choices are often different, but when more than one mentions the same perfume or brand, I pay attention! I love Le Galion and already own three from the brand. For that reason I would be very happy to try L’Astre. It sounds like something I would enjoy. I live in Texas.

  • I’m loving the exciting world of Indie Innovations trend! As Emmanuelle beautifully described in her review of Eau de Boujee Verdant, it’s ‘an ode to nature reclaiming its place in a world dominated by concrete’. This concept is incredibly inspiring, and I’m eagerly looking forward to trying it out for myself.
    Thank you from USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the neat log Emanuelle.

I loved reading about two fragrances in particular – Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler and Bel Rebel … & the pea. Both of these concepts are really neat and the idea of a realistic pea fragrance is quite neat. I also loved the presentation of the bottle.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Wonderful report and pics! What enjoyed about Emmanuelle’s “Best of Show Esxence 2023 Part 2″ is her description of Olfactive Studio Smoky Soul as a majestic tea fragrance that opens with great delicacy and yet has beautifully contrasting seaweed mineral facet. I love a good tea fragrance and appreciated the way Emmanuelle highlighted that one. Smoky Soul is a fragrance I would love to try from Esxence, although of course there are many others, like Ellen Dahlgren The Ruler which she also mentioned. I live in the US.
