Harrods Knightsbridge held an extraordinary event on 4th July 2023 owner and creative David Benedek and the renowned Master Perfumer Dominique Ropion, marking the unveiling of their latest creation: BDK Parfums Vanille Leather. This exquisite fragrance is a Harrods exclusive until autumn, before launching worldwide.

It was at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris (a fashion institution with two centuries of history) that David Benedek and Dominique Ropion’s creative paths intertwined, igniting a spark of inspiration that would lead to much more than a “fashionable” fragrance.

At the Masterclass Q&A, fragrance enthusiasts were treated to a fascinating conversation between David Benedek and Dominique Ropion, delving into the inspiration behind the fragrance and the intricacies of their creative process. Their shared passion for perfumery artistry was evident as they discussed the challenges and joys of bringing BDK  Parfums Vanille Leather to life.

David Benedek, with a discerning eye for fine art spoke eloquently about the essence of luxury and the embodiment of his vision within the fragrance. He emphasized the importance of creating an experience that transcends the ordinary, where each whiff of BDK Parfums Vanille Leather evokes a sense of opulence and refinement. The starting point of this collaboration was a fashion show from students at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Dominique worked with a student to create a perfect match with a gourmand sensuality to pay homage to the garment. When I first smelled the perfume, I loved it straight away, but I found it slightly abstract and thought I should meet Dominique Ropion to talk about it. We met and together we refined this beautiful vanilla note. We gave it even more light with tuberose and orange flower absolute. The addiction, initially spicy with pink peppercorns on top and Indonesian patchouli and Madagascar vanilla on bottom gives it gourmet and smoky notes. The oak wood reinforces the leathery and slightly animalic side of the vanilla absolute.”David Benedek

Their shared vision was clear from the outset – to pay homage to gourmand sensuality, crafting a fragrance that embraces the warmth and richness of vanilla, but with a contemporary twist. Thus, they embarked on a journey to refine the vanilla note, infusing it with radiant luminosity through the marriage of tuberose and orange flower absolute.

“I love this fragrance because it’s a mysterious and audacious perfume, paying tribute to the majestic vanilla.  My intention was to combine the precious vanilla pod with a bouquet of white flowers to slowly reveal its warm and sensual personality. The vanilla is adorned with the sulfurous and slightly honeyed tones of tuberose, then drinks in the powerful sweetness of jasmine and finally melting into the round, carnal notes of orange blossom. To intensify the trail, I chose to work around the notes of oak wood and patchouli.” Dominque Ropion

Picture the precious vanilla pod adorned with sultry, honeyed tuberose, an enchanting blend that draws you into a realm of indulgence. The velvety sweetness of jasmine and the delicate allure of orange blossom dance gracefully, complementing the vanilla-tuberose duet and elevating the fragrance to new heights of sophistication.

The heart and soul of BDK Parfums Vanille Leather resides within the trail it leaves behind. The central stage is captured by the interplay of oak wood and patchouli, forming a solid foundation that supports and balances the ethereal top and heart notes. The result is a journey of contrasts, where the plush, comforting aspects of vanilla harmonise with the earthy, sensual qualities of leather.

Dominique Ropion, a maestro of the olfactory realm, offered fascinating insights into the blending of notes and the meticulous art of perfumery. He revealed how the combination of tuberose and orange flower absolute added a delightful twist to the classic vanilla, unveiling a mesmerising complexity that unfolds over time.

Thank you for the review of Vanille Leather, Karl.
BDK Parfums is an incredible line in my opinion, and Dominique Ropion is one of my all-time favorite perfumers. He has created one of the most incredible perfumes, Portrait of a Lady, which is truly a masterpiece, and I have always admired his immense talent.
Yes, this truly sounds like an upmost sensual version of vanilla and sounds absolutely divine paired with tuberose and orange flower absolute. Gourmand and carnal, a perfect marriage of aspects I love in perfumery. The earthy leather with oakwood and pachouli to be so delicately balanced with its other facets…dreamy and I would love to have this spectacular blend dance and unfold on my skin.
BDK Pas Ce Soir will always hold as one of my favorites from this line, and I would be so thrilled to have Vanille Leather join my collection.

    Many thanks!

  • I enjoyed learning about the inspiration behind Vanille Leather coming from a fashion show. Also love the way it sounds as a big vanilla fan. So far my favorite BDK is Gris Charnel but I have yet to try the extrait and many of the other perfumes. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Yes baby I am in. I love this brand, I own three bottles and I wish to acquire more. Vanilla, leather what can be better?! I am very interested in winning this giveaway.

my interest was sparked by the name alone- vanille leather. i love both notes but don’t often see them together. this fragrance sounds truly compelling and sensuous and of course i have huge respect for dominique ropion.

i have only ever tried one BDK fragrance, wood jasmin, and it was really nice, but sadly that is all i’ve tried so far. i have been eager to try more though. i’m in california, USA.

  • Oh boy, great review by Karl here!
I am a huge fan of BDK Parfums, being Sel d’Argent my favorite one so far.
I love leathery fragrances and this one is something I must totally try. I love how Vanille Leather evokes opulence and refinement and that is how I picture this fragrance. Vanilla, tuberose and leather notes is everything I need in a fragrance. I hope I get my nose on this one soon.

I am a big fan of BDK Parfums and I think it’s a solid house, with a nice selection of perfumes, capable of satisfying every demand. My favorite from them is Gris Charnel Extrait and, honestly, there is not one which I did not enjoy. That being said, I think that Vanille Leather will be no exception and it has a high potential of becoming my number 1 from BDK. I look at the pyramid notes and I like what I see. Thanks for the review and for the draw!

  • Thank you for these article. I’m so excited for this perfume because of Master perfumerDominique Ropion. Just anything g he creates is a masterpiece. One of my favorite BDK perfumes is Wood Jasmine and I live in Phx, Az

  • I like a unisex leather fragrance, and this checks all the boxes. Orange blossom mixed with vanilla always a favorite combination. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • PerfumesforLife says:

vanille leather sounds like an incredible gourmet leather fragrance. I love sweet leather fragrances and from Karl’s review it seemed like they worked on the vanilla note. Ropion’s work by adding tuberose/jasmine and orange absolute as per Karl’s review seems to have rounded off the vanilla note to match the oak wood and patchouli note.

as Karl put it “ The result is a journey of contrasts, where the plush, comforting aspects of vanilla harmonise with the earthy, sensual qualities of leather.”

this seems like an incredible production and I would love to try it.

There’s beauty in the way that Master perfumer Dominique Ropion and the super creative and artistic soul David Benedek vibe together so I am delighted to witness the journey they decided to embark on together. Talent, vision and dedication to true craftsmanship are bound to bear fruit. I would happily embrace the indulgence and sophistication that Vanille Leather gifts us with. I have been impressed with BDK creations, Gris Charnel Extrait blew me away… I have lots of love for Villa Neroli too. There’s no note I don’t love in Vanille Leather – cannot wait to try this beauty. Thank you from Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • As I’ve mentioned previously, I really appreciate duality in fragrance, and I especially love these juxtapositions when they take something into a neo-gourmand direction. Karl stated that Vanille Leather is a “journey of contrasts, where the plush, comforting aspects of vanilla harmonise with the earthy, sensual qualities of leather”, which seems to place it firmly in that neo-gourmand space. I imagine the tuberose within the formula will offer a lush heady quality to it as well, which sounds divine. So far my favorite from BDK is Rouge Smoking, but this sounds as if it could dethrone it as my top pick. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • The beautiful and cozy leather and vanilla notes sparked my interest. The review was full of detailed information about this state of the art fragrance and it really sparked my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. I never tried this house so I don’t really have a favorite but Vanille Leather would definitely be my favorite I just admire this combination. It’s like leather and vanilla are made for each other. This perfume sounds like pure perfection.

  • convergence of vanilla, tuberose, and leather, leaving an unforgettable trail of oak wood and patchouli.

Top Notes: pink peppercorn, violet accord; Heart Notes: tuberose absolute from India, jasmine absolute from Egypt, and orange flower absolute; Base notes: vanilla from Madagascar, patchouli oil from Indonesia, oak wood, orris, benzoin resinoid. I am particularly interested and fascinated by the base notes Vanilla, Patchouli and Oak wood. This sounds like a magical concoction. A house that I have got no experience with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the UK

  • We gave it even more light with tuberose and orange flower absolute. A captivating journey that celebrates the harmonious convergence of vanilla, tuberose, and leather, leaving an unforgettable trail of oak wood and patchouli addiction, initially spicy with pink peppercorns on top and Indonesian patchouli and Madagascar vanilla on bottom gives it gourmet and smoky notes. The oak wood reinforces the leathery and slightly animalic side of the vanilla absolute.”–David Benedek. A, beautiful description really fascinated y the animalic vanilla. My favourite from this house is Tabac rose. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • I’ve been loving tuberose lately, and the combination with vanilla makes it Vanille Leather sound so lovely and sensual. I’d love to try to it! My favorite from BDK is the gorgeous Gris Charnel. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Can anything compete with my beloved BDK Tabac Rose? I’m wondering if this scent just might. The vanilla wrapped in white florals, especially orange blossom! Heaven. In maryland.

  • It’s funny that this showed up today because I recently received a BDK discovery set and Vanille Leather is my SOTN. Right off the bat, I get a lot of vanilla and white florals. This is lovely, really well blended. I love how this smells in the air. It’s airy and comforting. The trail is amazing. I am reading as I smell and DR’s explanation is so clear and spot on. It’s now drying down and the leather and patchouli are popping out more, just as Karl said they would. This is amazing. The more attention I pay, the more I like this. Of the ones I’ve tried from the discovery set, Ambre Safrano is my favorite, but this keeps going up the ranking. I can’t wait to try the rest.

  • Thank you Karl for reviewing another beauty. I love Dominique Ropion’s creations for different houses notably Frederic Malle and Givenchy. His creations are actually list toppers for my spouse as well. I can’t wait to try Vanille Leather which promises to be a beautiful concoction. I’m in Texas USA

  • Many of the popular vanilla fragrances I’ve tried haven’t worked for me, so I’m always intrigued by a style I haven’t tried. BDK’s explanation of how Vanille Leather came to be is very interesting, originating with a fashion show and interactions between scent and garment. The floral accord of vanilla pod, white flowers, and orange blossom sounds lovely, and vanilla seems a natural fit with oak wood and rich patchouli.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any BDK Parfumes fragrances and would love to try this one.

  • Really felt like I was at the masterclass. Thanks Karl for such a detailed accounting of the event and how Dominique Ropion met David Benedeck at students fashion show in Paris. I love the idea that this is a vanilla that is floral and animalic. My favorite BDK Parfum is Velvet Tonka, which I have a bottle and Vanille leather might be a blind buy once it’s here in the USA
    I live in the USA

  • Wow—vanilla and leather are two of my favorite notes so I was predisposed to like this one but Karl’s discussion of way white florals are woven in sold me! I’m reading in the U.S. and would love to smell this.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Great review Karl. Between David Benedek’s vision and Dominique Ropion’s masterful touch, Vanille Leather is a creation that has caught my attention. One of my favorite notes, vanilla, accentuated with a honeyed tuberose and orange blossom sounds like an olfactive match made in Heaven. I cannot wait to get my nose on this fragrance. My wife and I currently own 9 BDK creations. We truly enjoy each and every one. My personal favorites are Gris Charnel Extrait and Creme de Cuir. My favorites on my wife are Pas Ce Soir and Tubereuse Imperiale 🙂 <3

  • OMG! I love BDK Parfums! My favourite one is Gris Charnel Extrait, the best scent i’ve ever smelled! This one must be a must-have, too <3
    Greetings from Romania, EU!

  • This doesn’t seem to be just a vanilla perfume, which is great. Combined with patchouli, oak, tuberose and especially the leather accord, sounds like this is a very nice twist to a vanilla based perfume. Plus, Dominique is quite a master.
From the few I have tried from BDK, my favorite is Gris Charnel.
    I’m in the EU.

  • Gracias for your review Karl! I am sure it was amazing to be in the Q&A with David Benedek and Dominique Ropion. Mr. Ropion is a legend and sharing his thoughts, the way he blends notes and the meticulous art of perfumery, a gift and the way Mr. Benedek explain us the process of the creation too. This new scent seems to be a gift to our nostrils. Ok, I love vanilla so I am suspect. And a Vanilla with “opulence and refinement” is a must for me. The twist to do the pods more contemporary is using the majestic white flowers: tuberose, jasmine and orange flower. The heart and the trail of the fragrance is oakwood and patchouli: earth to contrast the air of the opening. I got a decanter of Velvet Tonka two years ago and I loved it. I live in Spain, EU.

  • From this beautiful collaboration a wonderful perfume is born. A magical trail, wow, I love vanilla, and this fragrance looks like the queen of vanilla perfumes.
    Europe

  • From the review, it seems that BDK Parfums Vanille Leather is a gourmand fragrance with a contemporary twist which is achieved by combining vanilla with patchouli and woody notes. Ropion is a skilled perfumer with an impressive resume so his name definitely sparks a huge interest. I am in US.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

Dominic ropion is one of my all time favs and this review makes this perfume sound wonderful. Leather is one of my top notes. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

  • Sounds like a fantastic fragrance! I can see it become a favorite for many categories of fragheads, featuring two of the most cherished notes in what seems to be quite a central position: vanilla on the one side and white flowers / tuberose on the other. That unique, and also intelligent and elegant combination, is what caught me the most in Karl’s review. Oftentimes vanilla gets paired with tonka or even more sweet notes, becoming a saccharine overdose. So having the dewy, yet opulent white florals and the dignified, sharp leather underneath must turn this into a really gracious vanilla.
    I live in EU.

  • I really love how Karl described Vanille Leather as the precious vanilla pod adorned with sultry, honeyed tuberose, an enchanting blend that draws you into a realm of indulgence, the velvety sweetness of jasmine and the delicate allure of orange blossom dance gracefully, complementing the vanilla-tuberose duet and elevating the fragrance to new heights of sophistication. So lovely!!
My favourite BDK Parfums is Ambre Safrano.

Perfect review! I felt as if I could smell the fragrance just reading this.
I am always fascinated by Mr. Ropion’s creations, and latest perfumes from BDK Parfums really got me too. So naturally, I am more than curious in this new release! The combination of the notes sounds brilliant. I usually adore vanilla scent, but it is rare to meet an unique one. I have no doubt this will be one of the unicorns. And if Karl’s saying it’s sophisticated, it must be so! Can’t wait to try it.
    Living in EU.

  • Thank you very much for the review.
I have only tried a handfull of BDK perfumes. So far my favourite has been Gris de Charnel Extrait, although I also appreciate Villa Néroli and Citrus Riviera.
One of my favourite notes is Vanilla, so I was always going to be drawn to this review. You quote Dominique Ropion saying that the fragrance pays tribute to vanilla. In your review the scent you speak of how the vanilla converges harmoniously with the leather (amongst some of the other notes). I truly hope to try this fragrance soon! You as well as the perfumer have 100% won me over.

I’m sooo curious abiut this new launch by BDK. I love this brand, I owned grus charnel which is a stample for me and I also like creme de cuir, bouquet hongrie, tabac rose and so many others. This new one sounds very appealing to me because I love vanille leather/suede notes and iris/orris. Trully can’t wait for this autumn to try it or maybe I don’t know I’ll be lucky and I’ll win this competition greetings from Italy, Milano

  • What interests me more about this fragrance is the violet mixed with vanilla, not something I have smelled before. Leather and vanilla has been done to bits. I’ve heard this one is a bit more unique in the category.

  • Wow i would like to try this fragance! From Karl’s review and the parfum notes, it seems to me that it is a very sensual perfume, I adore the tubereuse and jasmine, and the mixture with vanilla and leather sounds great and with a bit of an animal side. I love Charnel Gray from BDK! I am from the EU.

Karl’s review is intriguing, especially the description of BDK Vanille Leather’s sillage. I can imagine how beautiful this would smell from the beginning to the finish. I love Dominique Ropion’s work and would love to smell this gorgeous creation. Tuberose, jasmine, and orange flower together with patchouli, vanilla, and leather? Yes, please! The Masterclass sounds marvelous. I live in Cleveland, Ohio. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • My interest was sparked by reading of the pairing of vanilla and violet notes. US

  • Great review Karl. Love the way you break down the notes. It’s definitely more than Vanilla & Leather. This sounds like another masterpiece by Dominique/ Ropion one of the best perfumers. This would be my first time experiencing this Fragrance house. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Thanks to BDK Parfums and Cafleurebon for this giveaway! Loved Karl’s thoughts on Vanille Leather as it features some of my favorite notes: vanilla, patchouli and leather! I was always intrigued by the house of BDK Parfums but sadly never got a chance to smell their creations. Anyway, I would LOVE to get my nose on Vanille Leather as this seems perfect for someone who appreciates vanilla with light floral airy touches. Love from USA!

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m definitely interested in trying BDK Parfums Vanille Leather. I like the combination of vanilla, benzoin, patchouli, and pink pepper (e.g. Rochas Moustache EDP) and I like the combination of vanilla and oak (e.g. JCB No.13). In BDK Parfums Vanille Leather, I’m interested in experiencing the combination of vanilla, violet, and tuberose: they seem to be prominent in this fragrance. I like when Karl says: “BDK Parfums Vanille Leather is a fragrance that beckons you to embrace indulgence and sophistication.” So far, my favorite from BDK Parfums is “Sel d’Argent”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • whimsical diva says:

My interest was sparked by the name of the perfumer – I love some of Ropion’s previous vanilla creations – Vanagloria, Babycat to name a couple in recent years, so am extremely curious about this.

A floral leather? I wonder how this compares to Hermes’s Violet Volynka, which is again a floral leather composition.

BDK is a brand I’ve only explored briefly – I own and love Gris Charnel but haven’t explored more.

I’d love to be entered for the draw. I live in California.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Fashion and vanilla, what a seemingly odd intersection for a perfume to be developed. But since art comes in the most unexpected forms and from unimagined perspectives, this should be a great fragrance. White flowers, vanilla and leather – absolutely something to get addicted to.
Loved Gris Charnel, from what I’ve sampled from BDK, but I still have more to discover.
    I’m in EU.

  • I love crème de Cuir so I’m really interested to see what else they can do with leather. I am in the U.K.

I’m interested in BDK Parfums Vanille Leather because of David Benedek and Dominique Ropion paying homage to gourmand sensuality, embracing the warmth and richness of vanilla, but with a contemporary twist.
Through Vanille Leather people can learn what Dominique Ropion perception of majestic vanilla is , together with mostly white flowers , and leather.
Karl Topham take on the fragrance made me think of making, and later on eating Vanilla Cupcakes , while sitting on a leather sofa.
My favorite BDK Parfums is Gris Charnel, I sampled it because of Olya Bar review for Cafleurebon . From the very first spray , my girlfriend loved the way it smells, and I bought her a bottle. Smells like Cardamom Fig Cake i do on regular basis in my bakery , and black tea

I would love to attend an event like this, if I still lived in London. I’m a fan of BDK and am sure this is a lovely addition. I’m sure for myself, it would be a safe blind buy, but winning a bottle would be a bonus! I greatly admire Dominique Ropion’s work and am wearing Carnal Flower today, a great one for the heady, heat of high summer. Lush, thick and enveloping. I feel like Vanille Leather will be wonderful for the Fall, at least it launches worldwide in the Autumn. Unlike other Harrods perfume exclusives that I’m still trying to get my hands on.

I’d wear it with Double Breasted Tobacco Bedford Suit. I like how Dominique Ropion and David Benedek refined the vanilla, and added the floral nuances.

  • Rouge Smoking is the only BDK Parfums fragrance i know , it’s complex and alluring , with sour cherries, pink pepper, lots of vanilla, slightly musky smell. I’m happy to own a bottle.
Even though the two are very different, i tend to believe Vanille Leather falls in the same seductive , little black dress category.
Exquisite vanilla, leather and tuberose made by the master perfumer Dominique Ropion, I’m thrilled.

Correct, I was at Jovoy yesterday, and when I asked about Vanille Leather availability “Most likely in September” was the answer I received.
The woody patchouli, jasmine, vanilla from Madagascar, and the leather are the most appealing aspects of the fragrance, in addition to Dominique Ropion and David Benedek strive for refinement.
Up until yesterday Gris Charnel Extrait was my favorite BDK Parfums, now I’m not so sure , the new Pas ce soir Extrait is also great

  • Wow, this seems like luxury in a bottle to me. I love warm fragrances and all the notes that typically come with the territory, like vanilla, spice and leather. This one seems to have some interesting players thrown into the mix, though, causing it to stand out from the crowd. I love the idea of the tuberose and orange blossom dancing in harmony with thee vanilla, plus the oakwood in the base offering an element of woodiness and class. Sounds great. I have yet to try anything from this house yet, but they sound amazing. I am from Virginia, USA.

  • Always excited to try something new from Mister Dominique Ropion. If it has his name on it, you know you can’t go wrong! Also this idea of vanilla and leather on a bed of white flowers sounds very interesting!
My favorite from this house has to be Rouge Smoking. Thanks!

A mysterious and audacious vanilla sounds great!! I’ve heard of this perfumes, but had no idea Mr. Ropion was involved, a true master. I want to embrace indulgence and sophistication. When I first saw this and noticed leather, it didn’t interest me, but after reading this article I think I need to take notice. I have heard that leather wasn’t dominant. A perfect release for fall. Thanks for the chance. USA.

This sounds absolutely amazing – a journey of contrasts, where the plush, comforting aspects of vanilla harmonise with the earthy, sensual qualities of leather, a fragrance that beckons you to embrace indulgence and sophistication…
I haven’t tried anything from BDK yet.

  • I had a delightful experience discovering the origin of Vanille Leather, which draws inspiration from a captivating fashion show. Being a big fan of vanilla, the name alone piqued my interest – the combination of vanilla and leather notes is intriguing and rare. The fragrance promises to be a truly compelling and sensuous blend. As I haven’t had the opportunity to try any BDK perfumes yet, it would be a great chance to acquaint myself with this precious brand through Vanille Leather.
Thank you for the generous draw in the USA!

I really loved learning the story behind Vanille Leather coming from a fashion show. It sounds so good especially to a vanilla love like myself! My favorite BDK is Gris Charnel extrait, this scent really sounds like my cup of tea. I am located in Austin, Texas.

  • Two wonderful perfumers for a gorgeous collaboration! I’ve never tried any BDK Parfums. This one sounds spectacular. The combination of vanilla and leather is always a perfect blend. I love the description of the drydown of oak wood and patchouli. If I don’t win, I will just have to bite the bullet and order it from Harrods. It sounds simply magnificent!
    I live in the US.
