“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d.” ~ Act II, Scene II from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

Ah – but must a rose be always sweet? Might a rose not play androgynously upon the heartstrings, a rose-in-fancy-dress or en travesti – blurring the boundaries of gender? It was these (often perceived as hackneyed) lines from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet which immediately sprang to mind when I investigated my first spritz of Atelier Materi’s newest release Rose Ardoise. The very name itself – Rose Ardoise – alludes to the queen of flowers in a slate (or slate-grey) setting, much as a jewel might be mounted in a more contemporary and less traditional manner. This new fragrance has successfully surmounted sexism: to my nose, Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise resembles a rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre. That is certainly a mouthful, no matter how you regard it – and youthful perfumer Céline Perdriel has done a masterful job of rendering rose with such complexity. If one seeks a rosebud in June or a John William Waterhouse pre-Raphaelite portrayal of the blowsy, voluptuously full-blown rose, Rose Ardoise will not prove your rose-of-choice; best to look elsewhere. Floridly ebullient rose fragrances are plentiful and easily found – but an audacious, challenging-to-encapsulate rose is an aromatic rarity, and Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise falls into that select category.

Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise review

It has taken me several samplings to fully understand and appreciate Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise. The primary reason is the presence of an overdose of Ambroxan (according to Atelier Materi). It takes great skill to master this acutely raspy woody amber aromachemical (my classic exception to the rule is Maison Francis Kurkdjian Absolue Pour le Soir, which is one of my all-time favorite perfumes to wear and share) and I find that the handling of Ambroxan directly affects my appreciation of (and desire to wear) a perfume. On paper such as a mouillette, blotter, or tissue – Ambroxan doesn’t seem to read as prominently as it does on my skin. The opening of Atelier Materie Rose Ardoise is a trumpet fanfare of sorts: a rush of intoxicating nutmeg and pink pepper announce themselves with a flourish as they segue into exquisite roses which feel bonded to vetiver and clary sage. This intense alliance tends to overshadow some of rose’s more honeyed aspects, because a potent woody amber presence is immediately apparent. I smell a startling clarity and the mineralic facets immediately; a raw leather accord underpins it all. At this juncture rose assumes second place, and it isn’t until the drydown that one becomes more aware of its dulcet propensities. On my skin, which tends to amplify anything sweet – Rose Ardoise softens appreciably and smells less scratchy than my initial impression.

It’s very lovely, singular and wearable: neither masculine nor feminine in character, an alluring fragrance which possesses its own mystery and adventurousness. I found that, on my husband – Rose Ardoise became exceedingly woody, with very little rose, interestingly enough. Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise is a fragrance which is fascinating, and one which should be sampled before purchasing. No single fragrance suits everyone. This particular perfume can prove extremely satisfying when you approach it with patience and an open mind. It’s good to venture off the beaten track from time to time.

Notes: nutmeg, pink pepper (schinus molle), sage, Turkish rosa damascena, rosa centifolia de Grasse, vetiver, leather, Ambroxan

My bottle was a gift from Atelier Materi – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

The concept of a mineralic rose leather chypre sounds pretty interesting to me. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Ida says Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise is a rose-inflected leather chypre. It has overdose of ambroxan and it may smell different on different people such as woodier on some. Ida calls Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise a unisex creation that must be understood with patience. I am in US.

  • I love mineral and leather scents, sage, and rose! I love to see ÇaFleureBon reviewing so many interesting takes on rose recently. Nicoleta’s review — and the choice of that picture of Tilda Swinton — really capture my imagination of what this perfume smells like. I live in NY, USA. I haven’t smelled any Atelier Materi scents but I want to now!

  • I found it interesting that Ida mentioned how the fragrance smells more woodsy on her husband and more rose on her. That is exactly what happens with Frederic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady with my wife and I. On my wife–more rose, on me–more patchouli. Unfortunately I haven’t tried any Atelier Materi Perfumes.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ How interesting!! I am very drawn to your description of a “rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre.” ❤️ Thank you for the wisdom (I adore your reviews for the knowledge they bring, as well as the beauty). I will start paying more attention to how perfumers use Ambroxan. I would love to experience this more modern & unisex scent! Thank you for a fascinating review & opportunity! USA ❤️

  • Love Ida’s review on Atelier Materi Rose. I have sampled a few from this Fragrance house and they all are wonderful. The Rose mixed with leather, has me on interested. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Leather, Ambroxan and pink pepper. Yummy. Rose is such a go to note, but it’s no longer our mother’s rose and I love it! Tilda Swinton is one of my new favorite actresses and I love her style. Using her to visually describe the fragrance is genius (neither masculine nor feminine). I don’t own an Atelier Materi but hopefully that will change. Thanks for the chance to get my hands on a bottle. USA.

  • The opening described by Ida in her review of Atelier Materie Rose Ardoise is quite interesting to me – “a trumpet fanfare of sorts: a rush of intoxicating nutmeg and pink pepper announce themselves with a flourish as they segue into exquisite roses which feel bonded to vetiver and clary sage.” I like the listed notes but it’s interesting that Ida says it smells less rosy on her husband, but more woody. Glad that there are samples available on their website, as Ida suggests it should be sampled first. I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Since I own Atelier Materi sample set I’ll share my thoughts on the line , with the exclusion of Narcisse Taiji , when I bought the set the fragrance was not yet on the market.
Rose Ardoise was not even a thing back then, for the general public of course.
I do enjoy all , but one . Well made , interesting mix of classic and contemporary kind of brand.
To me there’s a tie for the best Atelier Materi,
    1.Cacao Porcelana
    2.Santal Blond
    3. Poivre Pomelo
As usual i enjoyed Ida Meister review, special connoisseur i respect so much, even though sometimes we’re not on the same page about certain fragrance. Keep them coming Ida,we love your work
What appealed to me in Rose Ardoise, is the changeling character of the fragrances, special rose fragrance that would keep its wearer in the dark 🙂
Just followed @celine_perdriel , the other profiles I already
    follow. I also follow @veroniquelebihan

  • I have never tried anything from the house of Atelier Materi, but I really like how this fragrance is perceived ‘This new fragrance has successfully surmounted sexism: to my nose, Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise resembles a rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre’.
I am in Europe. Many thanks!

  • whimsical diva says:

Ambroxan is certainly having a moment now – I feel every third release features a prominent ambroxan note. I love chypres and leathers, so a chypre leather sounds very intriguing. I also tend to like more masculine scents, so would be very curious to try this. I live in California, USA.

In the Materi line, I’ve tried Cacao Porcelana and it’s one of the very best openings ever.

  • What appeals to me most about Ida’s review is that she was able to overcome a great wallop of Ambroxan, and actually enjoy this fragrance.

I love rose fragrances, as well those with leather accords, but I struggle mightily with Ambroxan; it tends to smell (and feel!) like my nose is full of splinters. Perhaps Atelier Materi’s Rose Ardoise will help me ease in to this note.

I have not yet had the pleasure of trying fragrances from this house, but look forward to experiencing them in the future.

  • I appreciate that Ida said that this took a little extra time to fully appreciate, some fragrances are like that and our rush to judgement might make us miss some really amazing scents. I also like how she mentioned that it smells different on her husband. I adore this house, so many amazing scents. I own Cacao Porcelena and Santal Blond. I’d love to add a rose to my collection. Thanks for the draw. US

  • The mineral and leathery aspect of this rose sparked my interest, as well as the fact it turned intensely woody, with very little rose on skin. I am very interested in finding roses that are neither the fresh and dewy garden rose (which can be adorable when one is in the right mood, but sometimes one simply isn’t) nor the opulent rose often combined with oud, resins or incense. This one, introduced by pepper and nutmeg and drying into leathery woodiness with a touch of rose sounds extremely interesting.
Unfortunately I am not familiar with Atelier Materi perfumes yet.
    I live in the EU.

  • Haven’t trued anything yet from this brand but I love the storytelling behind it. I’m super interesting in the combination of nutmug, rose and leather sounds like something I would love.

    Greetings from Italy

  • I have yet to try anything frm Atelier Materi, but what caught my eye first were the bottles. I love this simple and elegant design. I wonder how the liquid inside compares to the outside shell, but seeing them being a regular talk here on Cafleurebon, I am sure they stand up to the praise!
    Thank you!

  • I don’t know what this is:
“ This new fragrance has successfully surmounted sexism: to my nose, Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise resembles a rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre.”
It does however, make me curious about what an fragrance that is neither feminine or masculine but a “rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre” would smell like.

    Pennsylvania US

  • I don’t have any rose fragrance because I was never too much of a fan, but Ida makes this sounds sooooo interesting! I’d love to try it, especially because I’ve never tried any perfume from this house, so hope that will change soon. Hugs from Croatia.

  • I adore leather and florals together- but I don’t think I have smelled a leather-floral with rose as the main flower! I would love to try it for myself. I haven’t smelled any fragrances from Atelier Materi. Thank you for the review! Writing from the EU.

  • Interesting review! I love an androgynous rose. In this case, I particularly appreciate Ida’s honesty about her experience with Ambroxan. Refreshing to read a review that isn’t overly effusive. Now I really want to try this to see how it will work on me. I am in the US

  • I think it’s great ida did not compare it to any other rose and that it is androgynous
And like her I would think ambroxan would be heavy
I have Bois d ambrette which I like very much

  • I can feel Ida’s joy and enthusiasm for this perfume. I am always in search for a unique kind of rose fragrance and this sounds exciting. “Rose inflected mineralic leathery chypre rendering rose with such complexity.” “…an audacious, challenging to encapsulate rose…” Thanks Ida for this review.
I have not tried any Atelier Material perfumes but would love to try some after reading this review.
    Maryland, US.

  • As a fan of anything rose, and unisex fragrances, I’m drawn to Rose Andoise for its neither masculine nor feminine characteristics. The notes of nutmeg and sage appeal to me also. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • “… a rush of intoxicating nutmeg and pink pepper announce themselves with a flourish as they segue into exquisite roses which feel bonded to vetiver and clary sage…” Now if that’s not appealing, I don’t know what is! I’m still new to Atelier Materi.

  • Thank you, Ida.
I have smelled Rose Ardoise and agree with every word you wrote.
I don’t know how you do it!

Rose Ardoise is one of the most unique rose scents I have ever smelled. Truly unisex. Truly fascinating. Very much like the video of Rose Ardoise with the shadow of the rose opening in the presence of its gorgeous bottle.

Atelier Materi continues its very specific, focused, fragrant gifts to us all.

  • What appealed to me from Ida’s review was her description of how the scent performed on her skin compared to her husband’s skin and which notes were more prominent on her compared to her husband.

I am in Portland OR and have not yet tried any Atelier Materi perfumes, but am very curious to Try this Rose ardoise scent and santal blonde.

  • Thanks for the professional review, Ida. I was trying to build the perfume profile in my mind, but this one was pretty difficult. Your note about your husband helped me to appreciate this one more.
Thanks again and I am in the USA.

  • I love rose fragrances and have tried many fragrances but gives this beautiful material a twist, but I haven`t tried yet one that hs a mineralic rose leather, and I would to smell it. To me, rose has to be an androgynous note in fragrance. I am tired of oudy roses and too floral and feminine roses in perfumery.
My favorite Atelier Materi fragrance is Cacao Porcelana.
    I live in USA.

  • wandering_nose says:

I like how Ida admits her encounter with Rose Ardoise was a challenging one due to the strong presence of ambroxan, but she still managed to approach the perfume with an open mind. I also appreciate the disclaimer she makes that Rose Ardoise needs to be sampled before purchasing due to its changeability depending on skin chemistry. The notes sound great to me, I would love a woody and mineralic leathery chypre. I do not have a fave perfume from Atelier Materi as of yet. Based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • The mineralic note is intriguing. I don’t think I’ve encountered that in a perfume before. Combining that with a more classic rose-leather chypre sounds like a good idea. The contrast between tradition and modernity, and the contrast of classic gender roles as well makes for a very interesting release, which I would love to get my nose on.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Very thorough review that encapsulates exactly what a gender neutral Rose fragrance should be. From the nutmeg and pink pepper to the scentfolia rose to the ‘raw’leather it shows that, with the right talent, a Rose scent can be worn by anyone at almost anytime.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Interesting rose very lovely, singular and wearable: neither masculine nor feminine in character, an alluring fragrance which possesses its own mystery and adventurousness.
I am from Bucharest Romania Europe

  • The amazing details and interesting information appealed to me about Ida’s review, I live in Poland, EU, I don’t have a favorite Atelier Materi Perfume.

  • Haven’t smelled from this line.
However, intrigued! I’ve recently fallen in love with rose and all of its facets and expressions.
    Beautiful writing.
    Hi from Boston.

  • Rose and leather are a classic combination. I’m really interested in how Celine Perdriel incorporates the spices and the green notes. The composition sounds very wearable and comforting. I appreciate that it is neither identifiably masculine or feminine and nods towards a rose scented leathery chypre. I haven’t tried any Atelier Materi fragrances before. I’m in MD, USA.

  • This sounds very interesting to me as I struggle to find a rose fragrance I like wearing. I love a natural rose in my garden but on me I often get headaches from the perfume. I think something less floral yet still roselike might suit me. In maryland.

  • tammiearrata says:

First of all, I enjoy reading Ms. Ida’s reviews so I’m always going to be captivated by her writings. In particular to this summary the line that most caught my attention is: resembles a rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre. This description had my immediate attention, I’m a sucker for Chypres of every variety. I like how she shares the different experience of this fragrance on herself and her husband noting that it is mysterious and adventurous. .

I live in Southern California, near Los Angeles.

I was not aware of this House prior to this review. I see that LuckyScent offers a discovery kit for $45 and I am very intrigued to get my nose on this House, especially Rose Ardoise.

  • My introduction to Atelier Materi fragrances was at Jovoy in Paris , by far the best niche boutique in the world , and it’s not even close.
Santal Blond in my opinion is one of the 3 best, together with Cacao Porcelana, and Cuir D’Iris.
Santal Blond is such a great fragrance, my mom bought it for me for my last birthday . Cardamom cookies, spices, citruses , dusty sandalwood, and red wine smell, I love it.
“To be, or not to be: that is the question” is one of the most famous quotes ever. Hamlet said it well , I’m thinking about it after reading about Rose Ardoise, is it a rose , a leather or exceedingly woody fragrance , like on Ida’s husband? I’d like to find out
Thank you for the opportunity, and cheers with Mulled Wine

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida! Your description of Atelier Materi Rose Andoise is interesting -that part when you said it took you several samplings to fully understand and appreciate Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise mainly because of the presence of an overdose of Ambroxan. I’d like to understand more about it so I hope to win. Thanks for the draw. – CA, USA

  • I love rose based fragrances, i own Intense Cafe by Montale. This fragrance sounds so much more complex and I am convinced it will be mesmerizing. Thank you for the oportunity. I live in Romania, EU.

  • I would gladly sample this audacious woody rose! I love rose perfumes are in all shapes and sizes and I wonder how this one, aledgely mineral- ardoise means slate- smells.
    I’m in EU

  • Ida, great review as always! I especially loved the description from the brand –

“In ROSE ARDOISE, the perfumer plays on ambiguities, combining femininity and masculinity, transparency and texture, minerality and sensuality.
The fragrance opens with fresh, spicy notes of schinus molle and nutmeg that reflect the clear, crystalline vibration of sage. Then, the rose expresses itself entirely before progressively melting into an overdose of ambroxan.

A singular composition that affirms its androgynous and contemporary character.”

I love rose in fragrances and i ESPECIALLY love when it is unisex, or androgynous as the brand said. I tried some of their perfumes and loved Santal Blond and Peau D’Ambrette and this one sounds like another winner! I live in Croatia, EU

  • I love experimenting with Ambroxan in perfumes and Ida got me intrigued with her view of this component in Rose Ardoise. I also love the fact that she tested it both on her and her husband to test the “unisexinest” (lol) of this perfume.
My favorite so far is Cacao porcelana.
    I live in EU.

  • What a wonderful review! A “rose-inflected mineralic leathery chypre” – gorgeous. What I loved most about this review was that it seemed quite raw. The fragrance itself seems so complex, and I love how Ida touched on how the fragrance favored different notes on her husband. I absolutely love perfumes with such complexity and ones that are a unique wear for different skin complexions. I sadly don’t have a favorite from Atelier Materi Perfumer as I haven’t had the chance to try any of their perfumes, but I would love to try this one! Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • I like how Ida, in her review, showed this other side of the rose fragrance. Not sweet, floral and feminine but rather unisex, new and fascinating. Nevertheless, my favorite fragrance from Atelier Materi is Poivre Pomelo. I live in Poland, EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I appreciate rose perfumes where rose is not the typical standout player and this sounds like just that fragrance. It is also so much fun to see how one fragrance can smell so different on another’s skin. I’ve found so many samples I absolutely thought were horrible on my skin smell amazing and totally different on others. I am not familiar with this house so I appreciate learning of it. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • I appreciate learning about this fragrance which I hadn’t heard of before I read from this review. I’m interested in trying this fragrance for multiple reasons, i.e. because Ida said that it is challenging, but it seemed like in a good way. I haven’t tried anything yet from Atelier Materi, but I’d like to try their collected works. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Being a Pastry Chef, I kept thinking about Gail Gross review of Cacao Porcelana for months. I had to try even earlier, own it now.
Smells like Chocolate Rum Cake to me , and surprisingly It smells boozy to me, not just in the opening, but the whole time.
Ida take on Rose Ardoise made me think of
Meshgengouz Gargantag , aka Armenian Nutmeg Cake With Rose, Honey & Pistachios
Cacao Porcelana is great, I think Rose Ardoise would smell great too
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign ‍

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed Ida’s review of Atelier Materi Rose Ardoise is how she describes this beautiful and unique fragrance. I love how she mentions how this fragrance wears so differently on her husband then on her. I am very impressed with all the offerings I’ve tried from Atelier Materi with my favorite offering being Cacao Porcelana. I am from the USA.

  • A rose centric fragrance off the beaten track , a aromatic one, surounded by clary sage, nutmeg and a lot of ambroxan is one worth cecking out, thanks for opportunity , from Romania with love!

  • Rose fragrances are my favorite. My collection is at least 50% of rose dominant perfumes. I love that this one is described as unisex and its composition is more singular. Sometimes it’s nice to have a straightforward fragrance instead of something really complex. I have never owned any Atelier fragrances nor have I had an opportunity to test any. I’d be thrilled to finally have one in my collection; particularly a rose-based one.
I live in the USA (PA)

  • I appreciate this is totally androgynous so my husband and I can share. We often do anyway, but he enjoys rose in his fragrance than I do in mine and I found the discussion around where the rose was more prominent fascinating. The only Atelier Materi I’ve tried is the Bois d’Ambrette, which is nice! USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Lovely review Ida! What appealed to me about Ida’s review is her description of it as an androgynous rose, blurring the boundaries of gender and surmounting sexism – a tall order for a fragrance, but definitely a calling that I admire! The embodiment of it in a mineralic leathery chypre rose sounds both startling and beautiful, and I am very very eager to try it. I don’t yet have a favorite Atelier Materi Perfume as I have yet to try any, but judging from the notes I suspect it would be this one, Rose Ardoise. I live in the US.

  • I have never experienced Atelier Materi, but I am fascinated! I love rose scents, especially a complex rose. I love the nutmeg and pink pepper as they segue into exquisite rose. Sounds beautiful. I am in California, USA.

  • I get the impression that you didn’t love Rose Ardoise. But it’s interesting to read reviews like this— where the reviewer, never at a loss for words, almost seems to be struggling with what to say. This is not a bad thing! It makes me very curious to try this. Must be a challenging fragrance. I haven’t tried any Atelier Materi creations.
    (USA)

  • What strikes me about Rose Ardoise, and the whole Atelier Materi line , is the way perfumers made not overly complex fragrances , whiteout making “something in the vain of” kind of scent.
A lot new rose ,sandalwood and cocoa fragrances (I remember the previousCafleurebon reviews) , including niche , nowadays are nothing more than a washed up versions of already existing once on the market, with just a little bit of twist.
The rose , woody and leather parts is what draws me in Rose Ardoise . The fragrance i think is made for people who know what they like , and take no “NO” for an answer.
Atelier Materi i need to try
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Atelier Materi I’ve sampled because of all the positive reviews on Cafleurebon. There are three that stood out to me,
Cacao Porcelana, dark dusty cacao , with rum and tobacco through the whole life of the fragrance.
Santal Complet , complex , green , slightly smoky , and classy , and quite versatile.
Poivre Pomelo , matcha tea , rose and citrusy feel
Rose Ardoise leather, rose , vetiver and ambroxan i all like, and it would smell unique, I’m sure
Thanks to Ida Meister, and Atelier Materi
