Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji Review (Marie Hugentobler) 2021 + the floral Yin & Yang draw

Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji review

I have always loved tuberose fragrances, almost to the point of excluding all other florals. Recently there is another flower that has won my heart…narcissus, with its duality of freshness and animalic, which can take on a neo-vintage vibe. This is the mystery of perfume: we suddenly fall in love with ingredients that previously did not appeal. The complexity of narcissus absolute is a challenge for even the most accomplished perfumers, but Marie Hugentobler ‘s skill is apparent, coaxing the perfection of this enigmatic bloom, (very expensive and rarely used in perfumery) in the new Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji.

My excitement was palpable when I read that Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji was set to launch (I already knew and appreciated the Atelier Materi collection thanks to Véronique Le Bihan). Its name couldn’t be more perfect for this floral Yin and Yang fragrance. In Chinese philosophy “Taiji” is  the pole star, keystone of the universe, on which rest the Yin (black, feminine principle, moon, darkness and freshness) and Yang (white, masculine principle, sun, brightness and heat), two opposing forces which cannot exist without the other.

In the opening, pear takes possession of my nostrils, juicy and without any sweetness, accompanied by musky notes that give a soft and subtle soapy start. But very quickly I find myself transported to a narcissus field quivering in a cold and intense wind; a dive into nature, into the greenery, where the flower is fresh and intense.

Marie Hugentobler has chosen exceptional narcissus, like the ones that grow on the Aubrac plateau in the heart of the volcanic Auvergne. Mme. Hugentobler adds sensuality by combining it with a carnal yet luminous tuberose. One imagines a vast field of white flowers with tall stems wafting a heady scent. The pear has now given way to spiced ginger that showcase the more animalic side. Narcisse Taiji has a few surprises to offer: a patchouli-leather accord that is beautifully blended, giving depth to the floral side of the fragrance as if you had rubbed a piece of leather with an armful of freshly picked flowers.

James Ivory movie “A room with a view” screen capture 1985 and released almost on this very day April 11th

The sweetness of the narcissus perfectly pairs with the hot, dry character of hay and bran absolutes of Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji immediately reminded me of James Ivory “Room with a View” and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful scenes in  recent cinema (where Lucy Honeychurch goes in search of George Emerson, almost drowning in the Florentine wheat fields). Narcisse Taiji still has a few surprises to offer: a patchouli-leather accord that is beautifully blended, giving depth to the floral side of the fragrance, as if you had rubbed a piece of leather with an armful of freshly picked flowers.

Narcisse Taijji by Atelier Materi

Veronique Le Bihan quote for Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji – edited by Emmanuelle Varron

Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji is a study in simplexity.  My skin adored it immediately and it would smell wonderful on a man (gentlemen, you have the right to wear flowers!). Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji moves between  gentleness and wildness, shadow and light, strength and fragility. The perfect balance of Yin and Yang.

Notes: pear, ginger root, tuberose, narcissus, hay absolute, bran absolute, leather, patchouli, musk.

Disclaimer: Many thanks to founder Veronique Le Bihan for the Narcisse Taiji sample provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

There are two other ÇaFleureBon articles to read about Atelier Materi: Ida Meister’s Cuir d’Iris (now Iris Ebène) review here and Gail Gross review of Cacao Porcelana here.

Really love a good flower perfume .This house intrigued me for a very long time and i would be very lucky to be in the winning end of this one , new york , usa .

  • This sounds like a romantic but not lightweight perfume. Who could think that tuberose and hay/bran could pair well? It paints the picture of covert sensuality, like lace underwear under a riding uniform. Very intriguing! A far cry from many loudmouth “look at me” releases that have flooded the market. I am familiar with Atelier Materi and was intending on purchasing Cacao Porcelana, another muted beauty. Greetings from Greece, EU!

  • Narcisse Taiji looks like a perfect floral for spring time. I have never tried anything from Atelier Materi, but I would love to start with this one.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

The narcissus plays the leading role harmonizing happily with all its fresh, floral and animalic tones.
I wonder what role tuberose plays.

  • Narcissus and hay make good combination as I have smelled in some perfumes so Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji looks promising in this regard. USA.

  • ANDREEA ELENA TIMOFTE says:

Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji being the Yin and Yang in parfumery, Taiji being the name of a star in China and of course the Narcisses in this perfume…all fantastic. It is hard to imagine how she got to compare a perfume with Yin and Yang, but I think once you get to smell it, all make sense.
I never heard of Atelier Materi, but this is what I like about Cafleurebon , I get to read fabulous reviews and discover many perfumes.
    I live in London, UK.

  • I am particularly drawn into the image and words of “almost drowning in the Florentine wheat field”. I grew up on a wheat farm and loved the fields of swaying waves of wheat.
I have tried some of the other scents in the line and they are all beautifully done. Narcissus is a favorite note for me so this one is an immediate must try.
    I live in the US.

  • Hello from Germany! Any perfume that conjures up *that* scene from A Room with a View is one that I would love to try…

  • I love duality in fragrance, so it’s impossible to resist on inspired by Yin & Yang. Moreover the notes are pretty intriguing.
I have yet to try any Atelier Materi fragrances, but I have my eyes on Iris Ebène and Peau d’Ambrette.

  • Hashim Madani says:

The opening homage to tuberose got my attention. Along with jasmine and Dama de Noche (Queen of the Night), tuberose is one of the most intoxicatingly beautiful flowers. I gravitate towards it regardless of house or perfumer. From this review, seems like narcissus might be joining in on the competition for olfactory love. VA, USA

  • I very much loved reading about Room with a View as an inspiration for this fragrance. Like the authors, I have really grown to love narcissus in fragrances, so I am definitely drawn to this creation. I have read about the line and the fragrances but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet. In the USA.

  • I’ve heard of this fragrance house and this perfumer before (by means of this website), but I haven’t tried any of their fragrances yet. After having read from this review, I am interested in trying this fragrance; it seems like it has a high-quality and enjoyable use of narcissus in combination with pear, ginger, and other notes that I can enjoy. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

  • When I read in the beginning that Emmanuelle is a tuberose lover like me I was excited to read more about Narcisse Taiji, because it might be something that I could really like. And I must say I am very very interested in trying this perfume. I love pears so the opening would probably be something that I would love. After that tuberose and narcissus…also great. And finally a bit of animalic leather and musk to give it an interesting twist. I have to try this! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I was immediately drawn to this scent when I saw the name. I adore narcissus having fallen in love with it when I bought Le Temps d’Une Fête years ago. That tuberose is also part of the equation is an added bonus. It’s another beloved floral note. I clearly need to look into this line! I’m in the US.

  • The appeal is the tuberose, natch, but I would love to be able to tell someone that I am wearing bran absolute. I have no Atelier Materi and, like everyone else, haven’t been able to do normal sniffing. I live in the USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I have been so looking forward to this scent! Just like Emmanuelle, I have only come to love narcissus scents more recently in my perfume journey. Tuberose used to be my favorite floral but now I think I enjoy the naughtiness of a good animalic floral with such a retro vintage vibe. And the fact that a house with such unique scents such as Atelier Materi is doing a narcissus fragrance makes it even more exciting! I love several from this brand including Cacao Porcelana and Santal Blonde. And the bottles are amazing! Thank you so much for the chance to win a bottle! US

  • The perfect balance between gentleness and wildness. This is definitely an interesting scent. I live in Indiana USA. I haven’t tried this house yet.

  • I’ve tried from this house Cacao Porcelana which I love.
Looking at my fragrances has made me realize that I actually don’t own any Narcisse centred scent.
My favourite part of this piece is when Ida compared the scent to a scene of Room with a view from James Ivory, a much-loved movie.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in the EU

Notes: pear, ginger root, tuberose, narcissus, hay absolute, bran absolute, leather, patchouli, musk. A beautiful description by Emmanuel I am intrigued by the notes especially tuberose, Patchouli and leather. A house that I am not familiar with I am afraid. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • wilsonwc76 says:

Oh, this sounds deliciously lovely! I’m also a huge tuberose fan, but I don’t know narcissus as well. The addition of pear and ginger sounds heavenly, and I don’t know this house, but this bottle is beautiful! I’m in NYC.

  • I have heard of this house before, but never had the chance to test their fragrances. Narcisse Taiji sounds right up my alley! Please count me in! Thanks!

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you very much for this wonderful review: this looks like a truly complex and amazing fragrance, that I would definitely enjoy. I am also very fond of narcissus, and the combination of fresh/flowery with the leather/musk sounds appealing. I am not familiar with the brand but have been reading a lot about them recently and am very intrigued by their minimalist approach, by the choice of building their timeless yet contemporary fragrances around one single raw material! Greetings from Italy

  • Nice review Emmanuelle and the scent looks so promising! I don¨t know why Narcissus isn’t used as often in perfumery (anyone knows the reason?) as I would like or , as much, as tuberose. It is one of my favorites flowers smell (yeah, I´m a guy and I love to wear flowers). Yesterday I was in The Botanic Gardem smelling all the narcissus that bloomed: amazing): darker, green and animalic…Ms. Varron explains us that Mme. Hugentobler has chosen exceptional narcissus for us. The image that the review propose is great : the actors of “Room with a view” in the Florentine wheat fields, the hay and bran with animalic aspects of the narcissus… I am interested to try also another scent from Atelier Materi : Poivre Pomelo . I live in Spain, EU

  • scentifolia says:

Thank you Emmanuelle for this evocative review. I am really intrigued by Narcisse Taiji because I haven’t met many narcissus-centered fragrances so far (the fresh and mysterious Eau de Narcisse Bleu is the only one I have ever worn !). Narcisse Taiji seems to offer a different take on narcissus , its subtle and contrasted hues sound deeper and wilder. My favorite Atelier Materi fragrance is the delicate and complex Cacao Porcelana because its aromas of rum, tobacco, vanilla and cocoa make me want to set sail to the West Indies, a far-away and sensual destination ! I am from Nîmes, France.

  • Narcissus is blooming everywhere now. And Narcisse Taiji sounds like spring in a bottle. I’m a fan of unisex fragrances and this scent, “evoking the idea of shade and light”, sounds good. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • constancesuze says:

I haven’t tried anything from Atelier Materi and I have to admit that in spite of being a huge fan of period dramas A Room With A View didn’t move me (my favorite Forster adaptation would have to be Maurice, similarly luscious). I love narcissus, both in life and in perfume. The animalic, almost horse and hay like notes make me happy. I like “pear takes possession of my nostrils” so vivid 😛
    In the US

  • Sounds like a perfume full of surprises!
Pear, narcissus, tuberose and an patchouli-leather accord, these all sound like a fascinating, dynamic trip I would love to experience. Also, narcissus is one of my favorite spring flowers. Quite underrated in my opinion.
I am in the EU and don’t have a favorite Atelier Materi scent.

  • narcissus is one of my favorite notes and the combination with the other notes is so perfect for a spring/summer-ish fragrance. I would love to try this, as I do not own Atelier Matieri in my collection. I am currently in Romania.

  • macaroni023 says:

Incredible review, I am already in love with this perfume, it feels like it was created for me. I adore narcissus and just the thought of pairing it with tuberose and ginger makes me so excited. I can imagine this smells like fresh but deep spring breeze. Love it! I only tried Cacao Porcelana of Atelier Materi, wich is very delicious spicy chocolate smell.

  • The combination of flowers, pear, ginger and a patchouli/leather sounds pretty interesting and alluring.
I’d love to test it out, haven’t got the chance to check any of Atelier Materi Perfumes – therefore I can’t name a favorite, yet.
I live in the EU, Germany.

  • Duality is always of interest to me. As is narcissus. Emmanuelle’s review highlights both of these. I am in the US and do not have a favorite Atelier Materi Perfume.

  • The yin and yang concept of the fragrance is really appealing. Narcissus has such a lovely scent and is definitely a harbinger of spring for me. The combination with ginger, leather, tuberose and patchouli really highlights the shadow and light aspects of the perfume. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • “But very quickly I find myself transported to a narcissus field quivering in a cold and intense wind; a dive into nature, into the greenery, where the flower is fresh and intense” nothing is more beautiful than a field of daffodils to celebrate the arrival of spring. I love the smell of narcissus. My favorite narcissus scent is Romanza victorian Narcissus composed by Cristiano Canali for MASQUE MILANO. “One imagines a vast field of white flowers with tall stems wafting a heady scent” really I love this sentence a perfume that can make that is a masterpiece. “where Lucy Honeychurch goes in search of George Emerson, almost drowning in the Florentine wheat fields” I don’t know this movie but the feeling of finding myself drowning in a wheat field makes me feel really good.
I have never tried a perfume from this brand but it is a brand that I follow closely I have heard a lot of positive comments on Cacao porcelana and Peau d’ambrette.
I live in France (Reims) in EU.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I appreciated the review was her nice breakdown of the fragrance. For example: “One imagines a vast field of white flowers with tall stems wafting a heady scent. The pear has now given way to spiced ginger that showcase the more animalic side. Narcisse Taiji has a few surprises to offer: a patchouli-leather accord that is beautifully blended, giving depth to the floral side of the fragrance as if you had rubbed a piece of leather with an armful of freshly picked flowers.”

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

I’ve never experienced an Atelier Materi fragrance, but besides this fragrance, I want to try Poivre Pomelo.

  • Fraglove97 says:

A really insightful review. The idea of a patchouli-leather accord mixed with flowers truly seems interesting. I did not explore that many fragrances with this notes combined but would definitely love to.

  • As a Chinese, I’m so intrigued by the philosophy behind this scent. And also, narcissus is one of my favorite flower and one of the most beloved among my countrymen. I would love to try this one out. Thank you for the generosity, I live in France now.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love the term “simplexity.” I have to use that sometimes! I also like how Emmanuelle describes the dualities here (shadow/light, sweet/dry, etc.). Narcissus and hay are favorite notes, so this excites me! I’m unfamiliar with this brand, though I love their bottles! Thanks for the draw–I’m in the US.

  • I live in the United States. I was not previously aware of this brand but the description of narcissus and tuberose as having multiple facets (or natures) and developing a fragrance which highlights both “yin” and “yang” aspects at the same time.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I have been on a bit of a tuberose kick lately but must confess I am not familiar with narcissus. I’m interested in the composition of the tuberose and hay. Two scents I adore but don’t believe I have ever experienced them together. Everything about this fragrance sounds divine and I love your description of rubbing leather with fresh flowers. I have not heard of this house before. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • Aileen James says:

What appealed to most of this review, is the play between light and dark. I loved the opening of pear, and quickly noticed the ginger root and the narcissus. As a woman, it had beautiful depth to my skin as well, but I am wondering if this is more suited to a man due to the leather, although I do love it. This article accurately portrays, the juxtaposition between yin and yang, and the play between strength and fragility. If I can pull it off, I would love a bottle! I love in Sacramento, California!

  • Caron Narcissenoir was my mother’s fragrance and it always smelled older more mature and dark. Emmanuelle makes this seem much more light but with still the darker quality.
Atelier Matiere I read about here in cuir de Iris
    I live In Michigan

  • WeAreScentient says:

Ah the ying & yang element of this is a beautiful concept, it suits Narcissus perfectly as they look stunning but can be pungent & are currently in full bloom. Cacao Porcelana is the only one I’ve tired & its beautiful.

  • kramerongo says:

Its between light and dark, in gray area there, I learn that it take so much 1,6 kilo narcissus flower of to make the 1 kilogram perfume. Always something new to learn. My favorite will be Taiji for sure. I am in Sweden EU

  • I think I am the rare breed of man who loves floral perfumes. They make me feel especially good, as well as being elegant and sensual. I would love to try Narcisse Taiji very soon. Greetings from Spain.

  • With so many new houses , market is overcrowded. I admire new brands like Atelier Materi , who follow their own path , and don’t want to step in someone else’s shoes.
Presentation made me say “Wow” . The cap looks like it’s made of concrete , maybe it is actually
Pear, narcissus and ginger mix in Narcisse Taiji I find inviting , especially for the Spring.
Thank you Emmanuelle Varron , and thanks to Atelier Materi for the opportunity.
USA , and Germany from time to time

  • I am really intrigued to find out how the combination of the notes in this fragrance works. Blending the floral (tuberose-narcissus) nuances, with the green notes and leather promises a very interesting result! I haven’t tried any of the Atelier Materi offerings. Commenting from EU (Greece).

  • ElenaChiss says:

Narcissus sounds good! But narcissus with leather, patchouli, musk and pear sounds even better! I would love to try this one! Thanks, Europe.

  • Andreea Florica says:

I totally agree with this idea that narcissus with its duality of freshness and animalic, can take on a neo-vintage vibe. I have tried only a couple of narcissus perfumes, but they both had a hauntigly beautiful vintage vibe to them. I would like to try Narcisse Taiji to see what it’s all about.

  • I don’t think that I have ever tried something with narcissus being the center piece, so I am curious about this one. Please count me in for Narcisse Taiji.
    Thanks from Europe!

  • patrick_348 says:

I am drawn to the way this particular blend of notes seems original but still wearable. I like very much the idea of a balance between notes that might be considered feminine and those that might be considered masculine. This sounds both familiar and new at the same time. I have never tried an Atelier Materi fragrance, but I surely want to try this one. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • This sounds just right up my alley and note listing looks very, VERY intriguing. I love floral perfumes and this would be just the right opportunity to try something from Atelier Materi! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Such an intriguing scent! Never tried anything from this house, but is never too late to start with Narcisse Taiji!
Thank you! I am in Europe.

  • Narcisse Taijifeels like a winner to me , different and exquisite. Everybody loves top quality leather and patchouli fragrances.
Color scheme , with the dark blue and the cap looks good. Well done
    Thanks, in US

  • wandering_nose says:

I was intrigued by the pear and musk, then the spiced ginger really piqued my interest and narcissus with tuberose made me swoon, but the patchouli – leather combo had me sold on this fragrance. The hay and bran absolutes take the composition to another level – such unique ingredients! I love how Emmannuelle compares the atmosphere the fragrance evokes to a beautiful and so romantic scene in a movie that holds a special place in my heart. I do not have a favorite Atelier Materi perfume at the moment but after this review I am very curious of them! Thank yoiu from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Narcissus and A Room with a View? I am sold! One of my favorite perfumes is narcissus based, but they aren’t easy to find. And, anything that makes me think of A Room with a View or any Merchant and Ivory film has to be a winner. I haven’t tried this line yet, but it looks like I will have to rectify that soon. I live in the USA.

  • I liked the pictures, the clear description in Emmanuelle’s review of Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji. The contrast of yin and yang in a perfume would be hard to manage, as in tai-chi in real life. So Atelier Materi Narcisse Taiji appeals to me very much. Unfortunately, no experience with Atelier Materi perfumes, yet. Thanks for the review and generous draw. Writing from the USA.

  • WaltherP99 says:

Since I own Atelier Materi sample set I’ll share my thoughts on the line , with the exclusion of Narcisse Taiji , when I bought the set the fragrance was not yet on the market.
I do enjoy all , but one . Well made , interesting mix of classic and contemporary kind of brand.
To me there’s a tie for the best Atelier Materi, Cacao Porcelana and Santal Blond are both fantastic. Poivre Pomelo would be my third pick. Cacao Porcelana is dark chocolaty patchouli with mild boozy feel. If you like your chocolate dark with over 96% raw cacao , you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the smell.
Bought the sample set because of Ida’s Cafleurebon review of Cuir D’Iris , but it’s the only one that didn’t work well for me.
“gentleman, you have the right to wear flowers”
I do on regular basis, with the exception of jasmine, note I’m sensitive to.
Narcisse Taiji with the freshly picked flowers, the leather and the bran possess the country spirit , I like it.

What appealed to me based on Emmanuelle’s review is how he describes the beautiful floral notes of narcissus and tuberose blending with greenness and beautiful earthy leather accord. My favorite Atelier Matieri fragrance is Cacao Porcelana. I am from Ohio, USA.

I’ve never tried anything from this house before, but Emmanuelle’s review certainly makes me most interested. The spiced ginger interests me a great deal. Many thanks for this informative review and many thanks to Atelier Materi for making this draw possible.

  • This sounds divine. I’m not familiar with this house and I can only remember smelling one narcissus perfume ever, but I loved it and had just been craving it lately! The other notes sound thrilling, too. And A Room With A View— one of my favorites. (USA)

  • I have been eyeing Atelier Materi for a while now, but I have not had the chance of testing any of their fragrances yet.
I am very intrigued by the narcissus/hay/leather combo!

    Many thanks for this draw.

  • Is it just me, or the pear is the most popular fragrance note lately? Every year there’s one really trendy note , last year was the mimosa, I think the pear is the oud of 2021 🙂
My introduction to Atelier Materi fragrances was at Jovoy in Paris , I think the best niche boutique in the world.
Cacao Porcelana is my favorite one. It’s bitter, just a bit vegetal and slightly boozy , with powdery cocoa, lots of patchouli, sandalwood and tonka. I cherish my sample a lot.
Soapy, slightly sweet, leather and florals, Narcisse Taiji feels unique, and in a way wild.
Also midnight blue glass bottles are more than eye catching.
Thank you Emmanuelle, Atelier Materi and Cafleurebon

  • I live in St. Louis, Missoui, USA. I haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing any Atelier Materi fragrances, so I cannot select a favorite.

I think Emmanuelle may have described the fragrance of my dreams! I love fresh white florals as well as deep, spicy offerings and it sounds like these opposing styles are married seamlessly in Narcisse Taiji. My interest has certainly been piqued and I’ve added it to my seemingly endless list of fragrances to try!

  • petergigov says:

What strikes me about Narcisse Taiji
is of the way perfumer made not overly complex fragrance , whiteout making “something in the vain of” kind of scent.
A lot new fragrance including niche nowadays are nothing more than a washed up versions of already existing once on the market, with just a little bit of twist.
Narcisse Taiji is fragrance made for people who know what they like , and take no “NO” for answer.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • At my bakery one of my most sold goodies is my Pear Ginger Cake , I often do with bran . Eating the cake, while sitting on the leather couch at home , and having tuberose bouquet next me . The mix of all, is how I imagine Narcisse Taiji to smell.
I have no experience with Atelier Materi, all I know is , Gail did a review of one upscale raw cacao (if you prefer cocoa) a few months back.
Appreciate Emmanuelle Varron review, and the giveaway campaign

Thank you for the beautiful review Emmanuelle.

My favourite part of this review was you telling us men that we have the right to (and rightly so, we should be wearing more) florals. I very much disagree with the notion of masculine/feminine scents.

I have not smelt an Atelier Materi fragrance before.
