Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette Review (Marie Hugentobler) +  Scented Memory of Love Giveaway

Atelier Materi Bois d'Ambrette review

Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette photo by Nicoleta©

“There are a hundred things she has tried to chase away the things she won’t remember and that she can’t even let herself think about because that’s when the birds scream and somewhere in her mind it’s always raining a slow and endless drizzle. You will hear that she has left the country, that there was a gift she wanted you to have, but it is lost before it reaches you. Late one night the telephone will sign, and a voice that might be hers will say something that you cannot interpret before the connection crackles and is broken. Several years later, from a taxi, you will see someone in a doorway who looks like her, but she will be gone by the time you persuade the driver to stop. You will never see her again.”

Whenever it rains you will think of her. ”  Strange Days, Neil Gaiman

To put it simply,  Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette is how I would like my skin to smell like in the scented memory of somebody in love with me. But whom I did not love in return. At least not anymore.

Still from Strange Days 1995 Juliette Lewis

Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette vibrates and shifts between several contrasting frequencies at all times. It has layers upon layers of carefully built sensual tension that you will be diving in, unexpectedly, after a deceivingly fresh and uplifting debut. It can be uplifting, a real serotonin hit that will then draw you into a Lars-von-Trier level of melancholia only to push you further into X-rated sensuous scenarios.

On different wears, it showed different facets on my skin, with different tempos, like a mirror that will bounce back and amplify exactly what you feed into it.

Feeling: the crisp morning air and the feeling of renewed vitality and endless possibility that comes with every early spring. The days in which my mind feels like a serpent that has just shed its old skin and is cheerfully slithering around, covered in its brand new scales. Sweetened slices of mandarin float in ginger tea, delicate and refreshing, cozy and proper, just like the sound of a teaspoon hitting the edge of the teacup, waking you to life. “New skins for old ceremonies,” as dear Leonard Cohen would say.

Remedios Varo Les Feuilles mortes painting

Storm clouds hanging low, like the aura of a migraine, suddenly released into the taste of thunder and the hair-rasing-on-the-back-of-the-neck pleasure of watching the pavement slowly turn from grey to slippery shiny black, bit by bit, by the heavy drops. Transparent wetness with a slight metallic edge and the rain curtain, tapping down on the rooftops and echoing a rhythmic sound you can breathe in synch with.  Suddenly, it feels like a taut spring of longing has suddenly sprung wide, with deep reverbs and out come memories, pouring: plans hung out to dry; the light of summer, filtered through the white crochet curtains; the freshly made bed, where you would crawl, young skin warming up the cold ivory sheets. The endless days of summer holidays, the familiar smell of your old haunting grounds that have shrunken in size year after year, there, in the remote parts of the city, where nature took back what it was rightfully hers. An earthy, powdery, herbal, floral woody memory bubble – a nostalgia you can’t help but revisit and float in, outside of time.

The debut is fresh and optimistic, with wet and transparent facets of ginger and mandarins, followed by a nostalgic valley filled with powdery and floral middle notes, only to get us in the lair of the beast, where ambroxan mixes in with musk and creamy sandalwood for a most sensual skin-on-skin experience. Here, in the drydown, Bois d’Ambrette turns to a highly personal, intimate, my- skin- but- WAY better – kind of scent, completely unisex and full on sexy.

  • Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette seems like a memorable, sensual scent with fresh aspects. It seems more suited to intimate encounters than large social gatherings and is appropriate for formal wear. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette sounds like a very sexy Fragrance. Romance is in the air. Love the art work. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Nicoleta! ❤️❤️❤️ What a gorgeous review! I love my Make it Musc Jovoy box so much! The fragrances are so so good and it’s a fantastic reference. Bois d’Ambrette is beautiful and sensual. Good afternoon/evening,

I love Neil Gaiman. Starting with “Anansi Boys”, then “American Gods”, then the “Fragile Things” compilation of short stories. Nice quote! Talk about setting the stage and love lost or unrequited.

I really appreciate fragrances with depth and various layers. I think that is what really has kept me into perfumery, honestly. If it was simply mono-tone, I think I would have just stuck with a couple of essential oils and been done with it; instead, perfume is like a symphony with all of the parts and connections. And the nose can be trained, you know! I discovered today, that it is hypothesized that the human nose can detect one trillion different scents. It was formerly thought that we could only detect 10,000. How amazing! What a tool to really fine tune.

I really like how Nicoleta has set the scene for this perfume, using weather and environment as the backdrop. Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette feels like one ‘to die for’!

    Thanks for reading,

Ambrette is a fragrance note that I’d like to experience more often in my fragrance journey. I also love how Nicoleta describes sweetened mandarin floating in ginger tea. I live in Maryland USA.

  • This is another sinopsis and Nicoleta’s vision leaves a trail of feelings , a crave for testing Atelier Materi Bois d Ambrette! From Romania with love!

  • Nicoleta painted a nice picture of how Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette would smell like, with many textures, ranging from melancholia to sensual. Not sure I would like “my skin to smell like in the scented memory of somebody in love with me. But whom I did not love in return. At least not anymore.” – these memories may not be pleasant and may cause melancholia, at least that is my take on it, though “a real serotonin hit that will then draw you into a Lars-von-Trier level of melancholia only to push you further into X-rated sensuous scenarios” may cure the melancholia. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Nicoleta’s review is so poetic and hautingly beautiful. The atmosphere and feelings that she transcribes, the scent, and the sound of rain drops. It’s stunning. Thank you for this memory journey from air to skin. From EU – France

  • The amazing details and interesting information spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Thanks for the review Nicoleta!

With many fragrances in my collections that shout out “Here I am” I sometimes struggle to find a nice skinscent to wear when you don’t want to be smelled across the room. I’m curious to find out how emotional and distinctive the scent is that Véronique created.

Unisex and full-on sexy fragrances are ideal because it’s something both I and my partner can wear and enjoy on each other. I would love to try Bois d’Ambrette!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I loved Nicoleta’s review of this fragrance, being a bettered skin scent and with all the notes listed, I know I would love this one.
With ginger and mandarins in the opening, it is a win win for me; I also like to wear skin scents when I don’t feel like smelling too strong.
    I live in the USA.

  • Jake Dauod says:

This was such a gorgeous review. That opening excerpt… wow. If this fragrance is anything like that experience, I know I will love it. I really like the narrative behind this fragrance. I am not the biggest fan of skin scents, but I am quite drawn to this one. There is just something so powerful about so much emotion being conveyed in such an intimate range that is really speaking to me. I love the complexity of this fragrance and how it goes through many transitions, which can even change on different wearings. I love to see the ginger note in this fragrance as it’s a personal favorite. I really am in awe of the construction of this perfume and I would love to experience it. Again, such a wonderful review. Kind regards from Indiana, USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I just wanted to say that this was a gorgeous review of a truly lovely fragrance, Nicoleta! I love the imagery of the scent of someone who loved me but whom you didn’t love in return. I love this brand and own bottles of the Cacao and Santal. This is another one I would love to add to my collection. US

  • I have not tried anything by this house, but I do know that they have some interesting offerings – Bois d’Ambrette included as the notes in this one sound right up my alley!
Really nice review and I like this part most – ‘The endless days of summer holidays, the familiar smell of your old haunting grounds that have shrunken in size year after year, there, in the remote parts of the city, where nature took back what it was rightfully hers.’

Thank you! I am in Europe

Very interesting review Nicoleta! What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review is her emphasis on how Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette shifts and changes on the skin with layers of shifting notes and different facets shown on different wears. I particularly love shapeshifting and complex fragrances so this aspect absolutely appeals to me. I live in the US.

Nicoleta’s review has certainly sparkled my interest from the beginning, when she says that Bois d’Ambrette smells in the way she would like to be remembered by a long-gone lover…I am here at my breakfast table, with a terrible cold and the weather outside is grey and cold, and the image of the summer morning in a countryside villa, on holiday with the family basking in the sun while reminiscing about sensual memory definitely brightened my morning! Would love to be able to smell this beauty! Greetings from Italy

  • The debut is fresh and optimistic, with wet and transparent facets of ginger and mandarins, followed by a nostalgic valley filled with powdery and floral middle notes, only to get us in the lair of the beast, where ambroxan mixes in with musk and creamy sandalwood for a most sensual skin-on-skin experience. Here, in the drydown, Bois d’Ambrette turns to a highly personal, intimate, my- skin- but- WAY better – kind of scent, completely unisex and full on sexy. A beautiful description by Nicoleta really intrigued by notes especially Ginger, Ambrette, muscs and sandalwood. Thanks a million from the UK

  • Sweetened slices of mandarin float in ginger tea, delicate and refreshing, cozy and proper, just like the sound of a teaspoon hitting the edge of the teacup, waking you to life. “New skins for old ceremonies,” as dear Leonard Cohen would say. A wonderful piece by Nicoleta I am fascinated by the notes and how it would work on skin. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

  • Can’t say no to well done musk perfume! As always, Nicoleta’s reviews make you want to submerge into her world and this one is no different. What draws me to Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette is the combination between fresh and powdery and intimate, which is something I always admired in the musk perfumes (my skin but better). I’d be more than happy to be lucky to try this one.
Thank you for the generous giveaway, I live in the EU.

Love this brand which I’m very curious to try nut it’s very hard to find in Milan where I live…this composition sounds good with ambrette, musc, amarys. Could be a nice addition to my fragrance collection.

I had the chance to smell this perfume a few months ago, and it moved me a lot. In Nicola’s description, I recognize myself behind these words ‘Bois d’Ambrette is how I would like my skin to smell like in the scented memory of somebody in love with me. But whom I did not love in return. At least not anymore.’
It even evokes me clearly who this somebody is …
I would love wearing it more often. Thanks for this opportunity. I live in Eu (France).

Ambroxan heavy ginger would make for a sensual and inviting fragrance. Bois d’Ambrette sounds simple yet fascinating, thank you for the opportunity. I hope to win. From Romania, EU.

  • Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette sounds complex, indulgent, and incredibly provocative. Nicoleta did a fantastic job of showcasing the aesthetic while also instilling a feeling of curiosity and longing, at least for this reader. Would love the opportunity to be able to gift this to my wife so thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois, USA!

  • “An earthy, powdery, herbal, floral woody memory bubble – a nostalgia you can’t help but revisit and float in, outside of time.”

This is such a powerful image, and such a beautiful way to make one want to float in the scent of Bois d’Ambrette.

  • Nice review Nicoleta! So interesting you find a scent that resonate and change between several different frequencies and has layers upon layers. I love Ambrette, the lesser-known vegetal musk. It is so versatile! I guess allows this perfume to give so manny facets in the skin. From the crisp and fresh opening with mandarine and ginger and then releasing floral and powdery accents along with notes of musk and amber . Wanna feel the sensual skin-on-skin experience Nicoleta had with this bottle of Bois d’Ambrette. I live in Spain, EU.

  • The excerpt from Strange Days really set the tone! That opening really caught my interest, as did your description of the journey from fresh and optimistic debut into the lair of the beast… thank you for this review! Writing from the EU.

  • Nicoleta described Bois d’Ambrette so beautifully. It indeed sounds very sensual, in a romantic, nostalgic and dreamy kind of way. The kind of love/lust one imagines, rather than experiences. The mandarin slices floating in ginger tea, then the experience of floral, herbal rain ending on a musky and intimate note sound fantastic.
    I live in the EU.

  • Nicoleta, this is like a short story and the way you describe this perfume is perfect with its layers of musk and sexiness. Opening with Strange Days quote is so inventive. I have the Jovoy x Cafleurebon box and one of my favorites was atelier materi bois dAmbrette

  • Lots of great references in this review…Neil Gaiman, Lars Von Triers, Leonard Cohen…! I always love the my-skin-but-better fragrances because they always owe a reference to a mammalian quality which are always my favorite perfumes regardless of how many fruits or florals they contain. There is simply nothing like a good animalic note to really make a perfume sexy in my opinion! Thank you! I am in the US.

  • I really enjoyed Nicoleta’s masterfully vivid description of the optimistic feeling Bois d’Ambrette had evoked. I had read the article first thing in the morning and then cycling to work in the crisp air I was still thinking about it. For a firm believer that new beginnings are an essential compound of one’s life Nicoletta’s sentences can be used as part of the manifest. 
I am also a sucker for contrasting notes eliciting scent memories from various life situations. Based on Nicoletta’s review Bois d’Ambrette clicks all the boxes. Véronique LE BIHAN’s statement about creating a fragrance that is a reflection of her made me, even more, intrigued to try it. And lastly, I just discovered a few days ago that Musk Mallow is one of my loved notes, and after googling Ambrette I found out it actually the same note and the names are synonyms.
Thank you for such a generous draw and wonderful introduction to Bois d’Ambrette. I reside in the EU.

  • I tested the entire Atelier Materi series and fell in love with Bois d’Ambrette which is really great! Thank you for this great opportunity!
    I am in EU.

  • My favorite was the imagery using the white crochet curtains. I’ve been looking for a new my-skin-but-better type scent and would like to try this. USA

  • Wow, this was absolutely beautiful to read. It evoked so much imagery and feeling. It made me very interested in smelling this perfume. It sounds like it takes the wearer on quite the trip. I am very familiar with “the feeling of renewed vitality and endless possibility that comes with every early spring”. Early spring is my favorite time of year because of this exact feeling that Nicoleta describes here so successfully. A fragrance that can elicit that feeling and then transport you deep into sentimental nostalgia is a fragrance that I want to experience. My-skin-but-better type scents are some of my very favorite types of perfumes and this one sounds positively unmissable. I have a feeling I would love it. I would be thrilled to win Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette. I live in the midwestern United States, in St. Louis, Missouri. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • Such a complex deacription for this beautiful fragrance. “how I would like my skin to smell like in the scented memory of somebody in love with me”. This though makes me happy, thinking about how i would like my skin to smell in hers memory… I adore the note of ginger. I also don t know anything about the note of angelica. This intimate description makes me hope that i will win this giveaway. Thank you for this chance. I live in Europe.

  • Ok wow. The scent you want to linger in the mind of someone who holds an unrequited torch for you. Yes, please. Sign me up! I love the multi-faceted nature that Nicoleta describes. I am in the US.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Ambrette is such an intriguing note and I think, is underutilized in modern perfumes. I was really introduced to it through the Le Labo fragrance and it gave such a comforting, musky, nutty aspect to the composition. Would love to try Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette. Wonderful Neil Gaiman reference! MD, USA.

  • Bois d’Ambrette sounds very unisexy. I liked the reference of a “serpent that has just shed its old skin and is cheerfully slithering around.” Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • Bois d’Ambrette sounds like a complicated and a very layered composition with notes of ginger, mandarins, with floral middle notes and dry down to a beautiful skin scent. I appreciate Nicoleta for this review.

    Nicoleta, such a beautiful review!
The fact that Bois d’Ambrette vibrates and shifts between several contrasting frequencies at all times, makes me so curious. The power of perfumes to mirror and amplify exactly what you feel seems like magic to me.

  • Nicoleta does it again with another epic review that makes one look inwards and remember long lost loves and memories. Bois d’Ambrette sounds like a fantastic fragrance and whoever wins it will be exceedingly lucky 🙂 I’m in USA and thank you for the review and kind giveaway.

  • I must say that, judging by the name, I was expecting something woody, heavier and not at all “intimate” or “full on sexy”. that proves how much I can err judging a fragrance by the bottle or by the name, and why I read Nico’s reviews, and not the other way around :))
this sounds like something I would definitely blind buy, and probably loooove to wear.
    I’m in EU.

  • Constancesuze says:

I’ve never thought about what I would like someone’s scent memory of me to smell like before. Maybe a hint of L’Air de Rien?
This sounds lovely. I’m in the US.

  • Multi-layer perfume with different facets is what I get from Nicoleta`s review and I like perfumes to smell this way. Thanks for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Nicoleta describes Atelier Materi’s Bois d’Ambrette as such sexy and sensual fragrance. The review is hot, delicious, spicy and if the fragrance itself mirrors Nicoleta’s words, then I’d love to have taste of it. Have to admit I love Atelier Materi’s bottles. Elegant and classy. I live in Poland, EU.

  • wandering_nose says:

What a brilliant review by Nicoleta! I am happy and grateful I have had the opportunity to get acquainted with a fragrance which is “an earthy, powdery, herbal, floral woody memory bubble – a nostalgia you can’t help but revisit and float in, outside of time”. How appealing is that… I have long been on a hunt for a gripping your-skin-but-better kind of scent, not to mention WAY better. Unisex is a big bonus for me too. I love the notes and am greatly drawn in by the concept of sentimental journeys back to what is familiar and loved. I live in Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • Being a Pastry Chef, I kept thinking about Gail Gross review of Cacao Porcelana for months. I should’ve tried it even earlier , but I’m pleased to have it right now.
Smells like Chocolate Rum Cake , and surprisingly It smells boozy to me, not just in the opening, but the whole time.
Nicoleta take on Bois d’Ambrette is ina way French, it reminded me of my days living in Paris, and also of making, and later eating tarts with candied angelica , and drinking ginger tea …
Candied angelica is a thing not many people know about, some Pastry Chefs call it “old world candy” . It’s made by boiling the stems in sugar syrup. If you can find the fresh herb (almost impossible to do on regular basis) the stems can be cooked with rhubarb or apple for pies , cakes, crumbles , and so on .
Cacao Porcelana is great, I think Bois d’Ambrette would smell great too
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign ‍

  • I really enjoyed the imagery in Nicoleta’s review. Ive wanted to try Bois d’Ambrette for quite some time now, as well as the rest of Atelier Materi really but this was the one the jumped out at me most. I like how Nicoleta described the scent and its transformations with the Mandarin and ginger opening and powdery floral mid to the sensual musky Ambroxan and sandalwood base, also how she mentioned the scent us very nostalgic. Thanks for the generous giveaway, would absolutely love to win this. From the U.S.

  • What strikes me about Bois d’Ambrette, and the whole Atelier Materi line , is the way perfumers made not overly complex fragrances , whiteout making “something in the vain of” kind of scent.
A lot new perfumes , unfortunately including niche , nowadays are nothing more than a washed up versions of already existing once on the market, with just a little bit of twist.
The musk , ambroxan and ginger parts is what draws me in Bois Dambrette
The fragrance i think is made for people who know what they like , and take no “NO” for an answer.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • My introduction to Atelier Materi fragrances was at Jovoy in Paris , by far the best niche boutique in the world , and it’s not even close.
Santal Blond in my opinion is the best one , such a great fragrance, my mom bought it for me for my last birthday . Cardamom cookies, spices, citruses , dusty sandalwood, and red wine smell, I love it.
Cold sheets? More like warm one after like Nicoleta said “skin on skin experience” .
Bois d’Ambrette is sexy, and smooth musky fragrance

  • Amazing review nicoleta, as always! I loved the description of the fragrance, and atelier materi makes high quality fragrances, so this one should be no exception. But the note listing sound incredible – Notes: Top: Mandarin, Ginger; Heart: Ambrette, Angelica, Amyris; Base: Muscs, Sandalwood, Ambroxan. Wow, wow, wow! Combination of notes is to die for!

  • Beautiful review for such a beautiful, passionate fragrance. I love the ideea of this one, makes ot special and unique. Angelica and ginger sound like one great combo. Thank you for the opportunity! Greetings from EU.

  • This sounds lovely, being both fresh yet intimate. That drydown described as being “my- skin- but- WAY better” really caught my attention. I’d never owned any Atelier Materi scents and this sounds like a wonderful one to start with.

  • What a beautiful review! If I have the chance to smell this perfume, surely Nicoleta’s prose will come to mind immediately. I’m particularly interested in the storm-on-city-street aura, which I wouldn’t have expected from the listed notes.

I really enjoyed Nicoleta’s review of Bois d’Ambrette. An absolutely beautiful creation from Atelier Materi. A lovely unisex and mandarin fragrance with an aromatic zest of ginger, a fresh touch of ambroxan and a beautiful creamy sandalwood leading to the perfect unisex and intimate scent. I am from the USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Atelier Materi I’ve sampled because of all the positive reviews on Cafleurebon. There are two that stood out to me,
Cacao Porcelana, dark dusty cacao , with rum and tobacco through the whole life of the fragrance.
Santal Complet , complex , green , slightly smoky , and classy , and quite versatile.
Bois d’Ambrette is so uplifting, and professional. It was interesting to read how Bois d’Ambrette is way more sensual on Nicoleta .
I’m not sure about “memory of love” , the fragrance quickly becomes woody, musky and there’s something green and herbal , that gives the fragrance aromatic feel.
Thanks to Nicoleta Tomsa, and Atelier Materi

  • I would love to win this one. I haven’t tried anything from this company yet, but I’d love to try their collected works. • WaltherP99 says:

When was the name of the fragrance changed from Peau d’Ambrette , to Bois d’Ambrette ?
I don’t speak French, but i was curious about the meanings of the old , and the new name , and according to Google Translate:
Peau d’Ambrette means Ambrette Skin ,
    and
    Bois d’Ambrette means Ambrette wood
I’m familiar with all Atelier Materi fragrances, with the exclusion of Narcisse Taiji , when I bought the set the fragrance was not yet on the market.
I do enjoy all , but one . Well made , interesting mix of classic and contemporary kind of brand. My favorite is Cacao Porcelana .
What appealed to me in all of their creations, is the changeling character of the fragrances, special fragrance that would keep its wearer in the dark
    Nicoleta even said it herself:
“Atelier Materi Bois d’Ambrette vibrates and shifts between several contrasting frequencies at all times.”
“The debut is fresh and optimistic”
    Yes it is
“musk and creamy sandalwood for a most sensual skin-on-skin experience. Here, in the drydown, Bois d’Ambrette turns to a highly personal, intimate, my- skin- but- WAY better – kind of scent, completely unisex and full on sexy.”
Not on my skin, the clean musk, ambroxan and sandalwood are present of course, but I also get a dominant green, piny , almost eucalyptus kind of smell, that pushes the fragrance into almost old school woody-aromatic territory. I really like Peau d’Ambrette , i mean Bois d’Ambrette , but i wouldn’t call it “full of sexy”
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg

  • With so many new houses , market is overcrowded. I admire new brands like Atelier Materi , who follow their own path , and don’t want to step in someone else’s shoes.
Presentation made me say “Wow” . The cap looks like it’s made of concrete , maybe it is actually. After reading Nicole’s review, I saw myself in a cabin, in the morning , with a book in my hands, after some passionate skin-on-skin experiences a few hours earlier.
I find the whole Bois d’Ambrette idea inviting , cozy, and sexy.
    Thanks for the draw

  • “Storm clouds hanging low, like the aura of a migraine”
This is a scene that only someone with intimate knowledge can paint. I’m captivated.
