Art Meets Art is back into the groove with Fabrice Pellegrin’s creation Like A Virgin Unplugged, he approached the song through the angle of a soft transition into a new era, capturing a different aspect than Alberto Morillas. Morillas gave us a pop friendly version of Madonna with his Like a Virgin, its sweet airy and addictive summer fun, think Holiday, a sweet sensation to of summer love. Where as this new release by Fabrice Pellegrin, Like A Virgin Unplugged captures the sprit of Madonna that steal hearts and breaks them.

MTV launched in August 1981 with Buggles Video Killed the Radio Star, revolutionizing the public’s perception of pop stars (read Michelyn’s 40th anniversary tribute to MTV here). Until then pop stars were mainly known through their music and record sleeves. Now they could be seen in a while new dimension, or well maybe if you had the access to cable, though it was not long before MTV were making waves. In 1984, as Madonna prepared to release her second album, Like a Virgin, she was scheduled to perform at the inaugural MTV Awards, kicking off the event at Radio City Music Hall in New York. A significant moment in music and cultural history was about to be made…

Like A Virgin Unplugged opens with fresh soft fruity florals that pop and sizzle like little stars shimmering on an empty stage. Feeling creamy from the start, silky petals give a flowing feeling with a sleek material sensation. It captures Madonna’s MTV Award’s performance wedding dress beautifully. It’s not long though until this fresh clean innocence catches it’s heal and a rather sexy intoxicating orange blossom is revealed. Like a Virgin Unplugged drips with a creamy floral milkiness like flashes of Madonna body from her disheveled wedding gown. That smooth silkiness gets rougher and velvety in a seductive way, like the silky petals have been warmed by body musks.

Madonna made a spectacular entrance by emerging from a giant wedding cake, wearing stiletto heels, a dazzling gown, and a bustier, all while playfully mocking traditional white wedding ceremonies. As the performance kicked off, stepping down from the cake she ended up on the floor and went with it. With thousands of people watching and the eyes of the syndicated television audience on her, Madonna through her self into it, giving a performance which caused her formal wedding reveal more than planned to the television cameras. MTV knowing a hit when they saw it zoomed in.

The florals in Art Meets Art Like A Virgin Unplugged, especially the freesia give little flashes of pinks and reds from beneath the milky white petals, they’re flirty fun pops of colour that’s tease and tantalise in the midst of Like a Virgin Unplugged’s musky sensual orange blossom. There’s a gentle spice maybe cardamom that’s making the milky accord feel cool in contrast to the warmer orange blossom. It’s feels like a soft fresh citrus cologne-like melody played over a more pulsating floral-amber drum machine beat.

Madonna ditched the dance routine, cleverly exploiting the moment started acting less than innocent on the floor, leaving little to the imagination and giving a whole new take on her soon to be released single Like a Virgin. Madonna recognized that controversy could be a powerful asset, marking this iconic moment as the first of many pivotal events in her career.

The orange blossom is the star here in Art Meets Art Like A Virgin Unplugged; its bitter green facets give the milkiness a thick sensual feel while its lighter citrus side sparkles like champagne. It’s a deep rich aroma that like Madonna’s Like a Virgin will stay with you, humming around as you go about your day bopping to it’s intoxicating melody.

These two releases from Art Meets Art beautifully encapsulate the contrasting ‘before and after’ of that iconic MTV Awards moment, showcasing the purity of pop alongside the more provocative side of sex appeal. Art Meets Art Like a Virgin Unplugged definitely is all about the latter with its narcotic orange blossom corrupting a creamy soft floral vanilla, thickening it up into a sensual intoxicating musk that’s captures your heart like a hook that stays with you. Like A Virgin Unplugged is a seductive track I’ll have on repeat. An intoxicating pop perfume.

Notes: Bergamot, freesia, Moroccan orange blossom, milky composition, vanilla.

  • I actually wore an orange blossom scent for my wedding! I love the idea behind this perfume, melding the innocence of the floral with its sexiness, plus a side of controversy!

A favorite Madonna memory is at summer camp when I was a teenager they used to throw parties and play classic Madonna songs including like a virgin.

  • As usually- beautifully written review by J Wearescentient, it totally captures the essence of Madonna and her duality! I love how he described the scent as this “before and after” of her iconic MTV performance, balancing innocence with sensuality. The way the orange blossom and creamy notes mirror that moment when Madonna turned the world on its head is just genius.

My favorite Madonna moment has to be that exact MTV Awards performance in 1984, her rolling around in that wedding dress, shocking everyone. It wasn’t just a performance; it was a statement. She knew exactly how to grab attention and turn controversy into art. This perfume sounds like it embodies that rebellious, intoxicating energy perfectly.

  • This should be very nice. I am really curious about both of these versions, the one created by Mr. Alberto Morillas and this one created by Mr. Fabrice Pellegrin. I have no experience with this brand, but I do know some of their creations for other brands and you can not go wrong with either of them. Thanks! EU

An interesting combination of innocent and sinful, an orange blossom corrupting a soft creamy floral vanilla, thickening it into a sensual and intoxicating musk. It’s intriguing to me. I am from EU

  • Scents based on the iconic Madonna performance that established her as more than just the material girl. Two scents-two personas. The OG Like a Virgin from Alberto Morillas was a radio friendly edit: sweet and fun–playing it safe.
Like A Virgin Unplugged is the blonde bombshell, the material girl–The ultimate video star. Like its namesake song, it has a sweet purity with its innocent-like floral notes that hide a sensuality and playfulness beneath with notes of Freesia paired with a musky orange blossom and a spiciness that paired with the milky accord, plays off each other like a beat of music. This scent is sex appeal tinged with purity. Just one of the many incarnations of Ms.Ciccone, the one and only, Madonna.

  • What an exciting review and release! I’m sick as heck right now and my vision is crap so I apologize in advance for not leaving a better response (‘tis the season).

The nostalgia alone makes this something that I’d truly treasure. However, the review makes it sound like something I’d really love to wear, too. I’m a sucker for the lactonics!

My first Madonna memory was receiving a record player for my birthday (mid-80’s). It was light blue and white stripes on the outside and inside of the lid was a rainbow. I received a Madonna (and Depeche Mode) record.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Madonna happens to be one of my favorite artists and after attending 3 tours and listening to her entire choreography, I can attest to what feeling Like A Virgin may seem like. In perfume form, it must be something innocent, fluffy and soft that lingers around you for a while. Taking the inspiration from the pivotal MTV performance, Like A Virgin Unplugged is more toned down (not in performance, but ingredient-wise) and not a beast fragrance but it’s not trying to be that either. It’s a cloud-like, delicate feeling that stays with you throughout the life of the wear. I’m located in the USA.

  • I have to admit I’m not a big fan of her music but I though her 1992 book Sex was a cool turn of events for her. It was controversy done right and I thought with a purpose. Semi-divergent sexuality awareness leading to acceptance if you will… which being in the midst of the AIDS crisis and ignorance that helped imo.
I love a milky orange blossom! It sounds Divine! I am located in the U.S.

  • J Wearescentient’s review of “Like a Virgin Unplugged” by Art Meets Art stands out for its insightful exploration of how the fragrance captures the essence of Madonna’s iconic song and performance. The review does an excellent job of linking the scent’s notes to the mood and themes of the song, offering readers a sensory journey that parallels the musical experience. The vivid descriptions of the fragrance’s evolution from top to base notes mirror the transformation in Madonna’s performance style, making the review both engaging and informative.
As for my favorite Madonna moment, it would have to be her performance of “Like a Virgin” at the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. This performance was pivotal not only for her career but also in pop culture history. Madonna’s choice to roll around on the stage in a wedding dress was both shocking and innovative, symbolizing a break from traditional expectations and setting a new standard for performance art in music. This moment encapsulated her ability to challenge norms and entertain simultaneously, cementing her status as a cultural icon.

  • I remember the to do after Madonna’s performance, and I loved it…upending traditional expectations all around, as she continued to do. I do love orange blossom, and would love to experience the corruptionto to the creamy soft vanilla… thank you for a lovely review and generous draw. I’m in the us
