“I am delighted to be collaborating again with Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen to create a new perfume commemorating the 15th anniversary of ÇaFleureBon. Michelyn’s “Queen Series” of perfumes is a never-ending source of creativity inspired by strong, powerful women. This year, my perfume brief was a fairytale, The Snow Queen, by Hans Christen Andersen—a classic story of good versus evil. as experienced by Gerda and Kai, two children that are neighbors and best friends. As every good fairytale revolves around a crisis, the sweet and loving Kai ends up with shards in his eye and heart of an evil, magic mirror that radically changes his outlook and nature; he now no longer cares for Gerda nor the roses that symbolize their love and friendship. But Gerda never wavers in her love for Kai; she embarks on a hero’s journey to liberate Kai from the Snow Queen, who has taken him to her icy kingdom. Ultimately, Gerda rescues Kai and her love for him conquers all.Amber Jobin, Perfumer and Owner of Aether Arts Perfumes.

2x Art and Olfaction Award-winning (2014 and 2022) perfumer Amber Jobin and I “met” over the phone. We became friend-in-fragrance and regularly spoke and bounced ideas off each other. Our first collaboration was Touchstone (which was a top 10 finalist in the Art and Olfaction awards and (reviewed here by Robert Herrmann, may he R.I.P) for our Project Talisman in 2017. Next was Circe in 2019, based on the Madeleine Miller novel of the same name and a feminist retelling of the Circe myth. Since I knew that Amber and I were on the same wavelength, I thought she she should take part in our Queen collaborations.  CyBorg Queen (2023) and Vampire Queen (2024) followed. Late last year I spoke with Amber during a Colorado blizzard, which inspired our “frozen gourmand” unlike any gourmand I had smeltMIchelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

Now for Sr. Contributor Sandi Lundberg’s review of Aether Arts Perfume X ÇaFleureBon Snow Queen

Anderson’s Fairy Tales Book via the brand

Do you remember reading Hans Christian Anderson’s Snow Queen, as a child or reading it to your children or grandchildren? She was an alarming figure who seized hearts and souls in her frozen kingdom. It was easy to imagine Gerda crossing frozen landscapes to rescue and retrieve her beloved friend, who once was kind and full of laughter.

On a rather chilly morning, I applied Snow Queen.  It was the kind of morning when the sunlight shimmered off the dewy frost-covered grass left by the evening. If you are familiar with the work of Amber Jobin, you know that she creates exceptional one-of-a-kind accords. Snow Queen is no exception! Knowing that Michelyn likes gourmands, this one is a frozen gourmand dripping in its originality. The opening is a gasp- shards of mirror and Ice accord (another masterstroke by Jobin) cut through with a silvery, almost dangerous cold; it’s the cold of a truth that you cannot ignore); it feels like breathing in a snowstorm. Snow Queen is a perfume of hard choices, fractures that precede growth, and a refusal to romanticize trials but to dignify them. Just as the chill threatens to numb me and my teeth chatter, the frost begins to weep; the rose accord rises—a phantom bloom—not opulent or romantic but haunting. It’s a rose of dried petals tucked into the spine of an old book or lost in a chess board long forgotten. Slightly faded, bittersweet, yet stubbornly alive, with an almost vulnerable quality, like Gerda’s trembling, ungloved hands clutching her stolen courage. A rose with a quiet nod to the miles walked, the tears swallowed and memories that outlast her fear.

Later, as Aether Arts Perfume X ÇaFleureBon settles, it eases into something soothing. It is white chocolate-creamy, sweet like a promised treat, its richness softened by the ethereal powdery, delicate addition of white orris. I caught the depth of white amber and the white musk. Snow Accord glistening beneath it like icicles. It is not a fairy tale but something better. Michelyn and Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume created a fragrance of friendship and loyalty, another inspired Queen concept and artistry. Snow Queen compelled me to discover the fractures in my life; it doesn’t hide the cracks. It seals them in gold and the quiet constancy of my spirit. I spritz Snow Queen on and let it hum against my pulse. Snip, Snap, Snare!

Top Notes: Shards of Mirror and Ice Accord; Middle Notes: Rose of Remembrance Accord; Base Notes: White Chocolate, White Amber, White Orris, White Musk Snow Accord

  • mmm, sounds so wonderful despite me dying for spring to arrive here in the midwestern US! one of my favorite fragrances has an ice accord in it, so i have always been curious to experience others with it. i’ve also been falling in love with orris. the review was so poetic, thank you!

  • Wow, “Snow Queen” from Aether Arts Perfume and Amber Jobin sounds absolutely enchanting! Reading about the interplay of cold, crystalline notes with the warmth of amber and that intriguing “frozen gourmand” touch has truly sparked my imagination here in the Philippines.
Even though this giveaway is exclusively for your wonderful readers in the USA, I couldn’t resist diving into the fragrant world you’ve described. The concept of a perfume capturing the essence of a snow queen – both her icy beauty and perhaps a hidden warmth – is so unique and compelling.

The shards of ice and mirror accord sounds so cold, like fresh frozen air. I love orris and am looking forward to that too. Thank you for another great queen! NY state

  • My favorite fairytale! Although I wish the robber girl made an appearance here – maybe some animal fur — I’m still intrigued and interested. Particularly by the snow scent. I’m in the US!

  • Being from snowy New England, this sounds like a fitting scent! I’ve been seeing a “frozen gourmand” trend emerging, but it’s interesting to see it in a concept that doesn’t include ice cream. The white chocolate note also sounds quite fun!

  • Sandi’s review and summary of the story of the Snow Queen was very touching. The juxtaposition of an ice accord with amber, orris and musk are intriguing, as well as does the rose accord that smells of dried roses.

Thank you for this drawing, I’d like to enter. I live in the USA.

  • I loved reading about the inspiration behind Snow Queen. I immediately thought of a fairytale as soon as I learned of the fragrance! Michelyn’s and Amber’s idea of creating a frozen gourmand is right up my alley. The opening of shards of mirror and ice is very appealing. I love how Sandi says it’s like breathing in a snowstorm. The haunting rose and white chocolate sound like the perfect companions to the icy opening notes. As a lover of orris, I have no doubt I will love Snow Queen. It truly sounds like a unique, atmospheric composition.

Thank you, Sandi, for the beautiful review, and thank you to Aether Arts Perfume for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

I love reading about the custom scents commissioned by Cafleurbon staff. Michelyn has good taste. I haven’t tried Aether Arts yet, but I love the snow queen concept here and the notes sound ethereally lovely.

I have no clue what shards of mirror would smell like, hmm. A frozen gourmand sounds good, I’ve enjoyed some similar ones from Solstice Scents in the past. Side note – I like that it comes in a 2ml roller size, that’s a good size for trying out a scent.

I’m in the US, please enter me for the giveaway. Thanks 🙂

  • Neta Davis says:

This sounds very interesting and nothing I have smelled before I would love to try it.

  • These Queen fragrances are a fun continuing project and often utilize some surprising notes. In the case of Snow Queen, it’s the opening ice accord and dry rose that stand out, especially in the context of anything gourmand. I’m really curious how much texture there is to this fragrance; it sounds cold, brittle, and sweet in equal measures. Very compelling design and nailed the brief.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I remember reading Hans” fairytales as a child. The fragrance inspired by the fairytale Snow Queen sounds lovely!

  • Ooof now this is a gourmand I can get with!!! I’m really curious what the shards of glass is all about? I imagine a sort of Mystikal aroma chemical with a de profundis /passage d’enfer cold funereal lily/chrysanthemum? But who really knows?? I love the description of the dry, melancholy rose!
