Aether Arts Perfume Circe (Amber Jobin) 2019 +  A Myth Retold Draw

Earlier this year, I had the idea of collaborating once again with Art and Olfaction Award winning Artisan Perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume after reading Madeline Miller’s book Circe. Amber and I speak regularly and often play off each other’s creative ideas. Amber is also not afraid to take risks and never plays it safe,  instead uses her talent to break boundaries in the American Artisan community.  After the success of Touchstone for  CaFleurebon’s  7th anniversary Project Talisman, (which was a top 10 finalist in the Art and Olfaction), I didn’t want to wait a year.

When creating Aether Arts Circe, Amber was painstaking and meticulous about capturing both Circe as she was portrayed in the book, but her garden and her magic.  Until Ms. Miller’s book  the myth of Circe has only been told throughout history by men, most notably in the epic The Odyssey by Homer.  Amber created 30 mods for Aether Arts Perfume Circe and narrowed it to three for me to choose from. There is some irony that  although I knew Amber had already created Charybodyis, in 2018, (the whirlpool and lesser of two evils for Odysseus’s sailors to avoid rather than the monster Scylla).  Perhaps that’s another perfume tale for another time.  –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in Chief and creative director. Disclosure: I do not receive any financial gain from any of my collaborations; the proceeds are for the perfumer.

Circe: A Collaboration between Aether Arts Perfume and Cafleurebon.com

When I was born the name for what I was did not exist. They called me nymph assuming I would be like my mother, aunts and thousand cousins. Least of the lesser goddesses, our powers were so modest they could scarcely ensure our eternity.”  Madeline Miller, Author of Circe.

I was thrilled when Michelyn Camen approached me with the idea of creating a perfume based on the Madeline Miller novel Circe.  This feminist retelling of the Circe myth had all the right elements for a great fragrance:  a beautiful location and a character that transforms herself from a lesser nymph into a woman of power and strength.  Banished to Aiaia, a verdant island caressed by Mediterranean breezes, Circe must learn to fend for herself.  She soon discovers the secrets of the plants and animals, bending them to her will and using them to keep herself and other banished women on the island safe when confronted by boorish male marauders intent on having their way with her or stealing her treasures.

Aether Arts Perfumes Circe captures her island and the magical plants used to weave her spells.  Ocean breezes carry the green scent of herbs featuring:  Erigon, Lovage, and tomato leaf.  At the heart of Circe’s magic are flowers, Wild Roses and Jasmine Absolute.  All are held aloft by the scent of sand, sea and cypress.

  • Reading the Odyssey, I was always drawn to Circe’s independent and magic abilities, so I was happy hear about this book and fragrance inspired by it. I haven’t read this or any other of this author’s books but would love to. I live in the USA.

  • jeremyn87 says:

It sounds appealing since it seems like an aquatic, green, floral scent. Possibly like one of the better sport scents of the 90’s, albeit higher quality?
I havent read the book, but I love Homer’s Odyssey. I havent tried anything from the house.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

I have heard so many good things about the book—and I follow Madeline Miller on Instagram, but I haven’t read the book yet. I just love the idea of a perfume based on herbs, wild roses, and the earth.
    I live in the USA.

  • I have indeed read this book and I too love the thought of a perfume based on it. I’m excited to know this exsist’s and am very curious to try it! I love the flowers used here in perfume to so can tell I’d most likely love this. I have not tried any perfumes from Amber Jobin.

Thank you for the chance! USA

I haven’t read the book, but this perfume sounds like and island paradise. Circe was always my favorite part of the Odyssey. I’m in the USA.

  • I’m a fan of spells, magic and tomato leaf! Thanks for another great article and generous draw. USA

  • Oh this sounds like another wonderful work of art! This is what I liked about the perfume’s description- ‘Aether Arts Perfumes Circe captures her island and the magical plants used to weave her spells.’ I hope I get the chance to smell this. Thanks for the opportunity. – CA, USA

  • I have not read the book, but I would love being thrown into the midst of this story through the sensation of smell. The flowers, the sand, the sea, I am thrilled to smell the vivid details of this surely incredible story. Commenting from FL, USA

This book is still on my to-read list so perhaps I will have to get a copy to read along with a sample of this perfume. I love the inspiration and the notes sound lovely. I love aquatics. I have not tried any of Amber Jobin’s fragrances. I suppose I should be that on my to-do list as well. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What an interesting and epic idea for this collaboration! This book is on my nightstand as we speak, I, however, am not in the same location for the summer. 🙁
I love that Amber is not afraid to take risks and is willing and certainly able-bodied and creative to take on such a challenge. Capturing the authenticity and magic of Circe in a fragrance, not your average run of the mill task. I look forward to experiencing Amber’s work on this project if only to see if I’m transported.

  • I love herbal fragrances and Circe in The Odyssey. I would love to sample this interpretation of both.

  • NiceVULady says:

Circe entered my knowledge from the Odyssey. I have not read Ms Miller’s book, nor have I ever tried any of the Aether Arts Perfumes. This seems to be about Circe’s abode and that was a bit surprising, although very interesting. An herbal/aquatic will be awesome. Thanks for the review and the draw. I’m in the USA

I was taking with a guy in a cafeteria at college a long time ago. He liked me, “that way”; I didn’t share the feeling. We were talking about Homer and I accidentally called The Odessey, “The Oddesty”. I knew how to pronounce it, maybe my coffee tripped me up. His face lit up immediately – he knew his affection was wasted on someone clearly not up to par intellectually. Problem solved. I love greens and live in the United States.

  • Rebecca Brokaw says:

I have read the book, “Circe”, and I loved it!
It has a dreamy quality, and is very much the story of a woman’s journey to become her true self.
I have not tried any other fragrance from Amber Jobin, and I would love to smell her interpretation of the scents from Circe’s island.
    Thanks.

  • I like companies that use as much natural ingredients as possible. This one is so perfect having rose and jasmine at the heart of the fragrance.
    I live in the US.

  • The Odyssey is one of my favorite works of literature and one I return to often, so naturally a book and a perfume based on Circe appeals to me greatly. I haven’t read the book, but would like to. Nor have I had the opportunity to try a fragrance by Amber Jobin, but this one sounds amazing. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • How have I not read of this delightfully bold mythical goddess!? Your review has inspired me to seek out the novel as well as, perhaps, tackling the Odyssey. A perfume based upon Circe sounds wonderful and I look forward to trying it. I am in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Great review of  Aether Arts Perfume Circe. It sounds like a light floral, herbal, and aquatic fragrance ideal for thw summer. I haven’t read the book Circe. I haven’t tried any other Amber Jobin fragrances. I am from the USA.

  • just want to say that i liked the book a lot — but truthfully, i liked her “achilles” better. both made me break out my copies of the odyssey and the iliad, (and actually procure numerous additional translations of each.) i am definitely looking forward to whatever she writes next.
