Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose (Luca Maffei) 2023 + A Breath of Twilight Giveaway

Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose

Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose by @jospehsaraceno

The new Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose, composed by Italian perfumer Luca Maffei – is the 11th edition in Aedes de Venustas’ collection of signature scents. Creative Director and co-founder Karl Bradl has employed many of the finest perfumers of our time to illustrate each particular olfactory vision: Frank Voelkl, Bertrand Duchaufour, Fabrice Pellegrin, Alberto Morillas, Ilias Ermenidis, Ralf Schweiger, Nathalie Feisthauer, and Rodrigo Flores-Roux amongst them. An embarrassment of riches, by anyone’s reckoning. Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose, is an eventide champagne rose; it commences as a shimmering spicy libation and crescendos into a dusky, haunting woody rose of charismatic depth and charm.

“This is an intense rose, whose personality never fades away and mostly, never goes unnoticed” ~ perfumer Luca Maffei

The Amnesia rose varietal is a spiral-petaled, ashen-hued palest lavender which is tinged with lilac-grey and café au lait tones – surrounded by a corona of faintly mossy green petals lying beneath its muted pastel abundance. Amnesia is French in origin, has no thorns, and possesses a delicate aroma, unlike other lavender roses which are frequently more powerfully scented. On so many levels, this particular rose mirrors the visual aesthetic of Aedes de Venustas’ Victorian bandbox boutique: a haven of vintage luxe fabrics, stuffed birds and lavish floral arrangements bedeck Karl and Robert’s shop, subtly-hued and soothing.

Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose review

Amnesia Rose is a breath of twilight which wafts from the garden through an open door and transforms the heavy, motionless atmosphere. It is an unforgettable rose, burnished with glowing saffron rays which are heralded by brisk pink pepper (and perhaps some aldehydes). And what roses! Signore Maffei engages the finest aromatic materials: the incredible sweetness of Moroccan rosa damascena, spicy and musky – and Bulgarian rose with its dewy, lemony freshness. One of the loveliest components which melds elegantly with them is Namibian bushman candle, a balsamic oleoresin with hints of benzoin, vanilla, and soft leather. It is perfect, complex and smells like complete perfume by itself (How do I know this? I purchased some last summer.). More shadowy leather is insinuated by a combination of labdanum, cypriol (aka nagarmotha – a relative of the papyrus which is earthy: redolent of smoky vetiver, ginger, clove, cinnamon, pepper and leathery incense nuances). Patchouli and Clearwood® (a Firmenich material which appears soft and ‘cleaner’ than patchouli, like patchouli without rubber, leather or earthy notes) are present, but never dominate Amnesia Rose’s composition, and sing beautifully with a dulcet oud and benzoin. I can’t speak to the presence of white incense: it’s either white sage incense, an accord, or a form of incense with which I’m unfamiliar. That which set Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose upon a brilliant, effusive path settles into a bewitching otherworldly voice, that of one who has not spoken for a very long time – with all the elements of a magnificent hush. It is among the loveliest roses which I feel privileged to possess.

Notes: aldehydes, Moroccan rose absolute, Bulgarian rose essential oil, Вushman candle, saffron, cypriol, labdanum, pink pepper, white incense, patchouli, benzoin, Clearwood®, oud

Bottle kindly provided by Aedes de Venustas – many thanks!   My nose is my own…

  • A Champagne rose with a Shimmering Spicy Libation finish? This sounds incredible – the description of this sounds like it will have a sizable sillage as well. An absolutely gorgeous bottle to add to a collection as well, reminiscent of a heavy art deco tumbler to me! My girlfriend and I both love rose fragrances, so if we won this we would certainly be sharing sprays! I live in Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Wishing Aedes Perfumery a Happy 28th Anniversary in 2023. Aedes de Venustas was the recipient of ÇaFleureBon “Best Comeback of 2021” Im a big fan of Rose Fragrances. The notes sound wonderful, love the bottle as well. This would be my first time explore Aedes De Venustas . Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I first read about Aedes de Venustas in Allure Magazine during my readership since 2001. I’ve never owned one or been to the store to smell one of their perfumes but this Amnesia Rose sounds layered and intoxicating with its depth. I’m in FL and I’d love to win!

  • Richard potter says:

This one had my name on it from the start. One of the loveliest rose fragrances I have ever sniffed. Actually one of the loveliest fragrances period. A masterpiece, one which totally captures Aedes De Venustas’ elegant, opulent, old world aesthetic.

Ida’s lovely review does it full justice. USA

  • The combination of high quality roses with earthy notes, plus the lovely bottle Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose comes in – these are some of the qualities that intrigue me about Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose. Ida calls it one of the loveliest roses she possesses – this is indeed very high praise from someone who knows her perfumes. Hence of course I want to try it. Thanks for the review and draw. From continental United States.

A serendipitous google search led me to Aedes last year and to a well discounted (and possibly the last retail) bottle of my favorite perfume. Bushman candle has always sounded like such an intriguing ingredient, but I’ve never tried a perfume with it. I’m in the US.

  • shelly wolf says:

The “Bulgarian rose with its dewy, lemony freshness” is a note that strikes me. Sounds lovely.

  • Aedes is one of my favorite houses. I have tried a lot of their perfumes, my favorites are iris nazarena (despite it challenging me a bit with the carrot/orris-ness of it all) and palessandro d’or. I wish i could afford to buy all of them, but am still working my way through nearly the whole line of samples i got. The minute i saw amnesia rose on fragranticas blog i knew i needed to try it. It sounds ethereal and gorgeous. I need a good rose, and this is a house i trust will not disappoint. Im in WA, Usa.

  • The use of Moroccan Rosa damascena (musky, spicey) along with Bulgarian rose (dewy, lemony) make an interesting pairing. This would be my first exposure to Aedes de Venustas fragrance. I reside in New York, USA. Cheers to your 28th anniversary!

  • The description of bushman’s candle oleoresin is my top takeaway from this review, I’m not familiar with that ingredient but I love learning about new-to-me perfumery components! “Amnesia Rose” sounds bewitching, the moody opulence of the still life photos lured me even before I could finish reading the lavish description of its composition. I’d love to try this as my first introduction to Aedes house perfumes. I’m in the US, thanks for the lovely article and draw!

  • What strikes me about Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose? The answer is Everything!!
I am from USA, registered user and a follower of @cafleurebonofficial

  • Rose, rose, rose. Ah, my favorite sultry floral. This one in particular sounds like it may be a welcome variation to the types I am used to (jammy, indolent, sticky), instead offering a softer, whispier take. As Ida mentioned, the namesake flower is not like many other more potent roses and I am keen to give it a whirl. I imagine combining it with champagne gives it a welcome pop at the top, and the cypriol’s soft leathery tones will help smooth and round things in the later phases. Sounds wonderful to me. Reading from NC, USA

  • This house sure has some of the best of the best for fragrance creators. I had no idea. I love Luca’s creations. I love that it’s an intense rose, that never fades away and is always noticed. What better description than that it is an “otherworldly bewitching voice that has not spoken for a long time”. I’m curious about the bushman candle note. I’d love to win this!! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • What strikes me about Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose is the the spicy champagne rose note and how it changes into a woody fragrance. I’m quite new to fragrances so I’m not quite familiar with Aedes de Venustas fragrances, but I would love to sample some one day based on the descriptions from this blog. From TX, USA.

  • The twilight associations and the misty sense of silence and calm really appeal to me in the descriptions! I live in the US

  • GraceRedifer says:

This fragrance sounds like a wonderfully unique take on a classic rose scent! The juxtaposition of the spicy and fresh notes sound exactly like the type of perfume I’d love to try. Would ship to Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose looks like a patchouli rose that is modernized and will appeal to those who like their compositions transparent and not overly earthy. I am in US. My favorite from Aedes de Venustas is Copal Azur.

  • Wow, sounds gorgeous! A rose with no thorns – surprising. This sounds absolutely lush with Moroccan and Bulgarian rose, with hints of benzoin, labdanum, leather, and spice. Sadly I finished my trial size of a lovely rose soliflore that is now discontinued, but this sounds like a great alternative to check out! Hello from Colorado!

  • I absolutely love a rose fragrance and this one sounds unique with the Namibian bushman candle. I also love the idea of a hint of saffron and clear wood but not overwhelmingly so. And pink pepper and cypriol for a bit of spiced brightness. A rose with some spice and some softness… I would love to have this surely.
    In USA thank you

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

A new ADV wow! This sounds delightful. I love roses and this review makes it sounds heavenly. I love ADV iris nazarena. I live in Indiana and hope I win

  • Happy Anniversary! 28 years is quite a legacy. I was reading this description with delight & getting to the end, of course it’s Ida’s beautiful description! Love, “ Amnesia Rose is a breath of twilight which wafts from the garden through an open door and transforms the heavy, motionless atmosphere.” swoon. I’ve always admired the beauty of the Aedes bottles. Thanks for the generous opportunity & in US

  • The description of thise perfume sounds amazing, with the champagne and rose it just sounds so grand. I didn’t think I’d find myself interested in a perfume with leather in it, at all, but this perfume intrests me as it sounds like it would be so pleasing to the nose. I do love rose fragrences so I think this perfume would be something appealing to me as well. I thank Aedes Perfumery for offering a bottle up to one lucky winner. New York USA here.

  • Denise Gomez says:

I am new to this house so I will confess it was the bottle that caught my attention followed by the picture of the roses. I feel like the image captures the scent of the perfume beautifully.

  • I’m really intrigued by the Bushman candle accord in Amnesia Rose – it sounds lovely, and with rose as one of my favorite notes, I’m sure I will love this perfume. Thanks for the opportunity to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA. Favorite Aedes perfume that I’ve tried is Iris Nazarena.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I love rose, patchouli, and leathery perfumes. Ida said Amnesia Rose is one of their loveliest rose fragrances, so I hope I win. It sounds incredible. New Jersey, USA

  • Ida always delivers great reviews and this one is yet another one.
I love Aedes de Venustas, being Signature my favorite one so far yet.
Amnesia Rose seems like a perfect fragrance with the rose that stays present all the time and never fades and companied by the saffron that I also love. Just amazing
I hope I get my nose on it soon.
    USA here.

  • This sounds really lovely. I am a big fan of rose and oleoresins so the bushman candle component of this has me interested. It also sounds like its not too in-your-face. I have enough powerhouse rose perfumes and it would be nice to have a softer one. I live in VA, USA.

  • I am a sucker for anything that is a rose dominated fragrance. They comprise most of my collection. What really intrigued me is the note of Namibian bushman candle. I’ve never heard of that note before and it sounds like an incredible composition added to this perfume.

I live in the USA (PA)

  • Happy 28th Anniversary Aedes Perfumery! Rose is such a ubiquitous note in fragrance, it’s hard to find a unique composition. Amnesia Rose utilizes some interesting notes such as Bushman’s candle and Clearwood to interpret an interestingly hued rose (pale lavender with gray and cafe au lait tones). Both the bottle and the name are gorgeous. My favorite Aedes de Venustas fragrance is Iris Nazarena. MD, USA.

  • One of my favs from Aedes des Venustas is Oeillet Bengale. I enjoyed reading about the lavender Amnesia rose and its scent. As a gardener who enjoys the scent of my flowers at dusk, I’m so drawn to Amnesia Rose. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • I adore rose fragrances, but what I like most about this is that it’s a bit more complex than other rose fragrances I’ve tried. The sparkling / spiciness, mixed with the rose, sounds fascinating. I’ve never tried a fragrance from this brand, but would love to try something new!
    New York, US

  • hautebrother says:

Thank you Ida as always, for such a thorough and intriguing description of this new expression from Aedes de Venustas. This type of resinous/floral fragrance deserves such a discerning breakdown. I love everything this brand/store stands for; it is the epitome of excellence in perfumery. A true baroque feeling of decadence and vintage charm inside their boutique.

I’ve been in love with their aesthetic since Iris Nazarena.

    I’m in Brooklyn, NY.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Very interesting review Ida! What strikes me about Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose is her description of it as a “champagne rose”. I have many different rose perfumes – jammy, dark, green, spicy, and bright – but I have never encountered a champagne rose. So the idea of one that blends musky Moroccan rosa damascena with dewy Bulgarian rose and shimmering aldehydes and pink pepper to create the sparkling effect of champagne sounds both unique and utterly lovely. My favorite Aedes de Venustas fragrance is Encens Japonais. I live in the US.

  • Aedes perfumes are among my favorite Iris Nazrena and Cierge de Lune I have bottles !
Lovely to learn so much about the rose Amnesia variety thought it meant a forgotten rose
    USA

  • I am absolutely dying to try this, and now, also to try Namibian bushman candle, which I had never heard of but a “balsamic oleoresin with hints of benzoin, vanilla, and soft leather” sounds incredible—and a perfect pair with rose. Reading in the US!

  • Gerald Martin Moore says:

Am a huge fan of Aedes, both the brand and the actual store and own several from them, loving their original one with the rhubarb note. I love a good rose scent and the notes in this are my favourite. What excites me is that it is said to reflect the aesthetic of the store, and the store is my favourite one in NYC. I live in CT (although will move back to NYC this summer)

  • This is my first exposure to the house, a common theme with me reading your blog as a fairly new niche lover. This fragrance sounds absolutely stunning, I love rose and paired with champagne sounds incredible, classy and luxurious. I’m in CA, USA.

  • Nara Hodgson says:

Wow! Everything about this sounds amazing, I am always looking for a new rose perfume, it seems I can never get enough!

  • Ida Meister take on Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose made me think of making Rose and Saffron Pots De Crème , and later on sharing them with friends, and drinking Café Au Lait . Sensual rose fragrance, with comfortable touch.
I also like learning about the Bushman candle note .
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • The Amnesia Rose is such a beautiful varietal of rose, so I am sure its namesake fragrance is just as stunning. Rose is one of my favorite flowers and notes in perfumery. The Bushman candle is a unique addition to the composition; I can only imagine what it smells like. However, I absolutely love resins so I have no doubt I would enjoy it. If Ida says Amnesia Rose is one of the loveliest roses she feels privileged to possess, it sounds like a must-try for me.

My favorite fragrance from Aedes de Venustas is Cierge De Lune. What a nice milestone for Aedes to celebrate; 28 years is an achievement!

Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Aedes de Venustas for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow you make this sound like such a gorgeous, luxurious fragrance! I’ve not tried any Aedes scents before but this review has me swooning. I also am not familiar with Clearwood and would love to find a way to smell it as I’m trying to imagine patchouli without the earthy tones. Thank you for this lovely review and the chance to win. From the US.

  • I love this line in the introduction of your review, Ida: “Aedes de Venustas Amnesia Rose, is an eventide champagne rose; it commences as a shimmering spicy libation and crescendos into a dusky, haunting woody rose of charismatic depth and charm.” Beautiful! Your breakdown of the materials in this perfume was very interesting. Namibian bushman candle caught my attention, as did your descpription of cypriol, which I’ve seen mentioned in notes lists but haven’t smelled in isolation. Amnesia Rose sounds like a wonderfully complex take on rose perfumes.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Aedes de Venustas fragrances. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I wad not aware of Amnesia , and its delicate half lavender and half rose smell.
Amnesia Rose i like mostly because of the classy composition, and because it’s made by a famous perfumer like Luca Maffei
The patchouli without rubber, leather or earthy notes like smell , and the Bulgarian rose are making Amnesia Rose perfect for date time occasions.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Small addition to my previous comment, i just got a sample of this directly from aedes, it is GORGEOUS. Highly recommend you get your hands on a sample, cafleurebon community!

  • I know most Aedes de Venustas fragrances, I’ve been at their boutique too a couple of times, and if I have to rate my favorite fragrances:
    1. Iris Nazarena
    2. Encens Japonais , the new interpretation of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur. The fragrance , and scented candles were made back in the days by L’Artisan exclusively for Aedes de Venustas boutique. The nose of both is of course the Bertrand Duchaufour
    3. Cierge De Lune
What striked me is the Namibian Bushman candle component Ida told us about , I’m a fragrance nurd, and I was not aware of it. Sounds lovely on its own, and combined with rose and clean patchouli makes it one sophisticated and sensual rose.
Iris Nazarena in the original bottle , and one very old vintage bottle of Aedes de Venustas by L’Artisan Parfumeur i own
Cafleurebon, Ida , Aedes de Venustas and Luca Maffei i already follow, and I’ll make sure to follow the other profiles, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I have visited the Aedes Perfumery shop, so I have an idea of the visual aesthetic that is mirrored in Amnesia Rose. I am very intrigued by the Bushman candle note. I love both Moroccan and Bulgarian rose. My favorite perfume from Aedes de Venustas is Iris Nazarena.
    I live in Massachusetts, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m very interested to try this fragrance. I can like rose-centric fragrances, and this one sounds good. Ida’s review made this fragrance seem enticing. I’m intrigued to try it because Ida said “It is among the loveliest roses which I feel privileged to possess.” I’m interested to see what all of the notes in this are like, especially the Namibian bushman candle. I live in MD, U.S.A. I haven’t tried anything yet from this company, but I’ve wanting to for a while now.

  • I’m surprising by fact there are a lot of lavender roses , and not just one like I thought. In Amnesia I like the Moroccan and Bulgarian roses giving the fragrance different rosy nuances , the saffron and the resins.
Elegant and smooth novelty rose is what Ida made me think , with her evaluation of Amnesia
    Thanks for the draw

  • THanks for the nice review Ida.

It was great to learn about this rose varietal, that I will be now digging into deeper.

THis fragrance is a beautiful composation, taking inspiration from all the facets of this varietal. I love the use of nagarmontha and bushman’s candle to create a base that is both ambery and earthy.

The bottles is beautiful as well – an ode to old perfume styles.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I learned quite a lot , not just about the fragrance Amnesia Rose, but about te new compound called Namibian bushman candle , and amnesia rose alone. If I’m not mistaken amnesia are often used on weddings.
The fragrance i find attractive for a few reasons, firstly Luca Maffei is one of my favorite perfumers , I like enigmatic fragrances and Ida’s lovely review of course.
I own one Aedes de Venustas fragrance, Iris Nazarena , beautiful Iris I bought because of Carlos BFL YouTube video, RIP . My bottle is different , I guess at one point Aedes de Venustas changed the presentation.
I’m looking forward of trying Amnesia Rose
    Thank you for the opportunity
