Do you remember what it feels like when your life is about to change? What about how it smells? Aedes de Venustas poses these questions as it introduces 16a Orchard, the perfume owners Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner commissioned to commemorate the much-loved downtown perfumery’s move from its gilded West Village environs to a new location on the Lower East Side.

But the timing of Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard meant it became about much more than celebrating Aedes de Venustas’ new digs and neighborhood on trendy Orchard St.  Suddenly, 16a Orchard marked not only the upheaval and transformation of a perfume shop but of an entire generation.  As Gerstner observes, “Every single soul went through a massive change in their lives.”

Firmenich senior perfumer Frank Voekl was called on to create 16a Orchard. Rather than center the fragrance around a central note or evocation of place, Voekl took a more oblique approach and composed a mood piece: “I aimed to create a sense of emotional wellbeing through a simplistic fragrance structure. The use of ingredients extracted from natural roots like ginger and iris tie us back to our earth, making us feel grounded and centered,” he relates.

The experience of Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard is a bit like getting lost in a modern art gallery where all the exhibits are watercolour. The notes shimmer individually then merge, separating and joining in a continuous loop that makes me think of Calder’s elegantly kinetic pieces. Voekl’s perfectly pitched composition is bright and scintillant one moment, dreamy and hazy the next. Its feel is neither urban nor nature but both. And neither. The lightness of Voekl’s work is a key element in 16a Orchard’s spare loveliness. The first stages remind me of pavement chalk drawings washed by the rain; neon colours rinsed into pastels. There is an Impressionist quality to these early moments; small strokes of iris, lemon rind and ginger are clearly delineated but meld quickly so that neither dominates. The iris acts as a silky sash joining the vibrant young ginger aroma with the acerbic lemon, quieting them from solo to harmony. The effect of these three notes weaving together is like walking through rain spray while the sun is out: silvery-bright but soft-focus.

Dusty, sultry cardamom comes out next, adding a dusky, veiled note that segues the fragrance into something darker and opaque. Soon, I smell a truly gorgeous, subtle suede note — drier and less powdery than other its many other iterations in perfumery. The perfume’s heart is all about flowers:  young, green jasmine, the soapy trill of lily-of-the-valley, and the floral-apple drip of quince, all tempered with a transparency and delicacy that gives Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard its atmospheric, quietly emotional quality. Wearing it is like half-remembered kiss on the wrist.

16a Orchard is soothing in an indirect way; there are no comfort scents of kitchen or nursery in its construction, but rather a quiet, simple beauty. It is fragrance that breathes rather than sighs, that smiles from eyes a little worn with sadness.  Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard wears close to the skin and having it on all day, I was barely aware of it at times. But at other moments, it washed over me like a gentle, welcome memory.

Think of how you feel when you suddenly laugh after crying. That is Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard.

Notes: Ginger, iris, bergamot, lemon, cardamom, quince, jasmine, muguet, musk, suede, ambrox, tonka bean.

Disclaimer: Bottle of 16a Orchard given to me by the incredibly generous Aedes de Venustas. My opinions, as always, are my own.

  • I loved that this fragrance have Iris mixed with cardamom, because those are my top favourite notes in perfumery. I`d definately love to try this, since I love Iris Nazarena. Btw, this description blowed my mind: “The experience of Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard is a bit like getting lost in a modern art gallery where all the exhibits are watercolour”.
    I am from the U.S.

  • I just sampled 16a Orchard last week and I think your review is spot on. an amazing ethereal scent but not weak.goes through many great stages all the way until the end which is many hours. .typical high quality from this house..Big fan of theirs..my all time favorite is their original signature..Rich and full of incense rhubarb..total standout.

  • The iris, lemon rind, and ginger are such a great combination to open with. Then the warm dusty cardamom and suede carry you through the field of flowers and hold your hand all the way to the dry down. The fragrance sound so endearing and Lauryn has done such a nice job of bring the fragrance to life through this review.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Lauryn, what a beautiful & poignant review! ❤️ The way you describe the impressionistic palette of 16a Orchard is gorgeous. I love this: “a half-remembered kiss on the wrist.” Wow. That sounds like an entirely glorious & decedent morning in the court of the sun king. I don’t yet have a favorite Aedes de Venustas scent, though I hope to one day. CaFleureBon has introduced to to some amazing fragrance boutiques and I’m so grateful! Thank you for this opportunity! ❤️

This sounds beautiful! I loved the evocative descriptions of how it is quietly comforting and introspective without “resorting” to kitchen spices or cuddly soft, sweet ingredients. I have great respect for Aedes’ scents thus far, especially Iris Nazarena. I’m also a huge fan of the store…I miss its two larger west village locations from years ago. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Nicoleta.Tomsa says:

Not entering the draw, just wanted to say thank you to Lauryn, it’s a treat to read your reviews, every time.

  • I’m so happy to see the return of the Aedes line along with this new release. Copal Azur is probably my favorite, but the original is another contender. I like the way that Lauryn describes 16a Orchard as indirectly soothing with a quiet, simple beauty.

  • Professor_Bair says:

I don’t have a favourite Aedes de Venustas perfume but I’m amazed by how Lauryn makes 16a Orchard sound. I’m most interested in the dusty, sultry cardamom. USA

  • The feeling of suddenly laughing after crying really does it here. Lauryn’s whole review was amazing, but that line really got me. I haven’t tried any Aedes de Venustas perfumes. I am in the US.

  • “How you feel when you suddenly laugh after crying,” is such an incredible description that I simply must try this! This store has been one I’ve been wanting to visit and plan to do so ASAP. Congrats to them on their relaunch. From Brooklyn, NY

  • Thank you Lauryn for this beautiful article !
I loved this part ;” atmospheric, quietly emotional quality. Wearing it is like half-remembered kiss on the wrist.”- I trust to your test and think this new perfume is amazing.
I am really happy that Aedes continues creat new perfumes,
    USA

  • What struck me was the description of the development of the perfume when wearing. House fave is Iris Nazarena. US

  • This line at the end summed it up for me – “Think of how you feel when you suddenly laugh after crying. That is Aedes de Venustas 16a Orchard”. I have no experience with this brand. 16a Orchard seems to be a gentle soothing perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I was so happy to come across this review. Iris Nazarena launched my love of perfumes and I own all but one of the Aedes line. Hard to pick a favorite but maybe iris nazarena, palissandre d’or or copal d’azur. I was so pleased when they announced the relaunch and I found out they were putting out a new perfume. I can’t wait to try it… I’m intrigued by the notes of ginger, lemon and iris.

“The iris acts as a silky sash joining the vibrant young ginger aroma with the acerbic lemon, quieting them from solo to harmony.”

  • What strikes me most about 16a Orchard by Aedes de Venustas based on Lauryn’s review is the poetic, thoughtful, and lyrical nature of scent and how the spices, florals, and base notes are delicately woven to capture the mixed emotions of change and rebirth and provide light and comfort. It sounds truly beautiful. My favorite Aedes de Venustas perfume is Copal Azur. I am a registered reader in Maryland, USA. Thank you for the lovely review and generous giveaway.

Quite an interesting read! What strikes me about 16a Orchard based on Lauryn’s review is her description of it as a watercolor painting – with notes that both sparkle individually and merge into formless and hazy void, both vivid and indistinct in turns, but always altogether lovely, like an impressionist painting. Such a lovely and evocative description really piques my interest.

I don’t yet have a a favourite Aedes de Venustas perfume as I haven’t tried any of them yet, but from the descriptions I suspect my favorite would be Encens Japonais, with it’s alluring combination of spicy incense, supple leather, and soft rose and iris. I live in the US.

  • I always know when I am reading one of Lauryn’s reviews. She has a very beautiful way of weaving the words together to describe a perfume. This was no different. Watercolors are my favorite medium, and I loved the description of the watercolors as compared to the perfume, the soft merging of colors. Somehow I have never smelled any of the Aedes de Venustas perfumes.

  • I must say I am really drawn to the ccolorful, almost surreal composition of the first photo in this article! Truly beautiful representation of the fragrance. Lauryn’s mention of the laugh after crying is such an interesting way to characterize the fragrance, especially given the passing references to rain, kind of like teardrops. This is admittedly my first time hearing about Aedes de Venustas but I’d be interested to learn more about their other releases!

  • 16a Orchard sounds exactly like my type of fragrance. I love a fresh fragrance with bergamot and citrus notes, white flower, and subtle spice. What a perfect time to release a fragrance intended to depict change and new starts. I love Lauryn’s description of fragrance as watercolor; individual notes blending together to create a masterpiece of scent. While I have not had the pleasure of trying out an Aedes de Venustas fragrance, this prize may help to make the price point slightly more affordable!

  • Haven’t tried any from this house yet but definitely interested. Big fan of iris need more in my collection!! Sounds like very nice fragrance that’ll last long. I love intense fragrances but not synthetic ish USA

Thanks Cafleurebon for opportunity good luck everyone!!

  • Thank you Lauryn. It sounds like Frank Voekl was totally able to create a fragrance that gives one a sense of wellbeing from your experience of wearing it. All the way to giving you the feeling of laughing after crying. This would indeed be a great fragrance for a dark winter. I’m in USA

  • From the description, 16a Orchard is my kind of fragrance. I loved the sentence where Lauryn says “this fragrance breathes rather than sighs” I love to be near someone when they smell good not when their perfume smells good. That’s how I want my perfume to smell, like it’s an extension of me. The notes of this fragrance really appeal to me. The soft quality of suede and the warming effects of ginger sound so comforting.

Thank you for the giveaway. I have never tried anything from Aedes de Venustas. I’m in the USA.

  • I’ve heard of this fragrance shop/fragrance house by reading from this blog, and since I first heard about them, I became interested in trying their own fragrance releases-I haven’t tried anything from them yet, though. I’ve heard that perfumer Frank Voekl is a skilled perfumer, and that he’s made some well-known fragrances, but I haven’t tried any of his works yet-I’d love to, though. In regards to this fragrance, I like iris and ginger, and I’d like to see how Voekl uses the ingredients. I want to see what Lauryn means when she says “a simple beauty”. If I win the gift card, then I might use it towards this fragrance. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

Thank for the beautiful review Lauryn!

I really enjoyed the impressionestic quality of your review, with so much emphasis on what each individual note brings to the overall fragrance experience.

I’ve not heard of this house before but it is now on my radar.
