Perfume Review: Tonatto Profumi Ápeiron (Creative Director Diletta Tonatto) 2016 + Vintage Designer Elegance Draw

One of the highlights of last September’s Tranoi at The Tunnel in New York City was getting to know the entire Tonatto Profumi line and its lovely creative director, Diletta Tonatto. Diletta is  oversees the line, which also includes  the celebrated Amir, Iss and Dama. Sampling each fragrance in the collection side by side was to walk through an aromatic gallery where the artist’s oeuvre was on full display.

Creative Director Diletta Tonatto of Tonatto Profumi

Tonatto fragrances sing with the high quality of their ingredients and show a craftsman’s attention to detail.  But deserving a pedestal and spotlight of its own is Ápeiron, one of the newest in the line.  Ápeiron is the first perfume created under Diletta Tonatto’s aegis, and she describes its genesis as a collective effort: “Ápeiron is my first project as creative director and maybe a bit more. The staff at the lab in Torino worked non-stop with me for various months to achieve the result … and there is a little piece of everyone's heart in it.

Ápeiron’s opening is olfactory bone china, delicate, sheeny, milky. The lactonic first notes spread out quickly like a fan, joined by a powdery chord that is part violet, part musk.  Its marketing says that this is a “perfume of opposites.  Certainly, there is a retro-modern, girlish/womanly duality to this fragrance. So, while Ápeiron could live happily on a vanity next to vintage Miss Dior, its polished, assertive second stage makes it sleekly current enough to share space with more avant-garde beauties like Gucci Rush.

Ápeiron has a vintage elegance that brings to mind those swanlike models of the 1950s: cut-crystal Sunny Harnett’s begloved, wasp-waisted grace or aristocratic Dovima gazing disdainfully at the camera, swathed in yards of Balenciaga.

But then Ápeiron slowly shifts as a sleek core of liquid licorice and melted violets cuts through that well-bred beginning. There are two violets in Ápeiron; the yesteryear makeup note mixed with tonka bean, and the dark velvet, leafy flower that emerges in the middle stage. As that latter violet comes forward, an assertive licorice note then travels up through the middle of the fragrance like a swimmer breaking the water’s surface, with lovely, odd glints of plastic, black cherry and ebony wood. A rivulet of light amber seeps also through. All the while the notes have been coming together and coalescing seamlessly – a signature of this refined house.

Ápeiron’s baby’s breath and candied violets opening make me think of those gorgeous, much-missed Bonwit Teller (a chic NYC specialty store on 57th Street that closed its doors in 1980 to make way for Trump Towers) floral sprays that graced that lovely old store’s shopping bags: a creamy background against which a spray of purple and blue violets flutters in the air, like a joyfully thrown bouquet.  But its licorice-tonka heart, with its push-pull of bitter and sweet and subtle plasticine note, is deliciously modern.  If you stole Dorian Leigh from 1952, gave her an asymmetrical bob and dressed her in Tracy Reese – that is Ápeiron.

Nice to see a spotlight on this brand, as I haven’t explored them in a while. Back when I was searching for exquisite marine scents, Oltre was on my list…I found it kind of frighteningly realistic and bilge-water-ish–compelling but hard to wear. I did love the spicy oriental Amir. This scent sounds lovely–the vintage/modern duality and the interesting contrasting notes of violet and licorice. Anything that has a powdery/purple quality with spice automatically brings to mind the off-kilter beauty of Apres L’Ondee and I want to try it! Would love to win this. Never heard of or visited that store which is a shame! Thanks so much for the draw. I’m in the US (Boston).

I love anything with liquorish and the thought of a vintage/modern, bitter/sweet fragrance really has me lusting after this! I have definitely heard of Bonwit Teller, never been but the name is synonymous with class. I am in the US; thank you for the chance.

It is the first perfume by Diletta Tonatto who is daughter of Laura. I have Albi from Laura Tonatto in my collection. Apeiron reminds one of vintage Miss Dior which I love and it may also remind some of the iconic Bonwit Teller. My favorite Tonatto perfume is Albi. I am in the US.

Apeiron ssems to be a very Special perfume. I don’t know this perfume house yet and I would love to get to know their creations.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Wonderful review. I never heard before about this brand. Ápeiron sounds fabulous from the review. I have never tried any violet based fragrance, and this one could be a really good one. Thank you very much for the draw. I live in Europe.

Forgive me as I mistook iris and violets as the same flower when I was starting on my fragrance journey. So I don’t buy perfumes with violet as I feel that’s redundant. Lauryn’s review made Apeiron appeal to me since she said that I can smell two kinds of violets in this review, coupled with hints of licorice.
I’m in the US. Haven’t been to Bonwit Teller but has been to a Neiman Marcus since “S Scent me” there 🙂

  • I love the illusion to bone china and candied violets. No one does descriptions like Lauryn! This sounds like a lovely perfume to welcome spring. I had never heard of this brand so thank you for bringing it to my attention. USA

  • Apeiron…a study in contrasts. Love the violet and china allusions. Bonwit Teller was more than a store; it was an experience. So many of those specialty stores are sadly gone now. Shopping was more of a pleasure then. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • This is the first time I hear about Tonatto Profumi but this Aperon seems the one i would like to try. Someone has written liquid licorice and melted candied violets?? I need to smell it!
I live in Europe, thanks for the draw!
pd. I haven’t heard about Bonwit Teller …

  • I have never heard of Tonatto Profumi before, yet I must say that Ápeiron sounds like a wonderful licorice-flecked violet perfume. The way it’s described reminds me of Lolita Lempicka, which I completely adore but something about it turns off my partner so I only wear it at work. Maybe he will like Ápeiron more.

And if not, well, there’s always time to wear it at work…

Thanks for the drawing, I’m in the USA.

Wow! Sounds like a stunning perfume. Violet, licorice, black cherry – it has been done before, but this one sounds thick but still elegant and not syrupy sweet. That plastic vibe is also intriguing. I’m in the US, and I have not heard of Bonwit Teller. I have also never tried a Tonnato perfume, but I would love to!

  • I never shopped there, but I loved this mention of Bonwit Teller and their signature violet and green logo. It reminded me instantly of a beautiful dress in exactly those colors which my mother wore often in the late 1960’s or early 1970s. The dress was gorgeous to my young eyes, and of course my mother was beautiful no matter what she wore.

As I read Lauryn’s review I was also reminded of a bottle of violet cologne that I was given to wear, a first perfume for a little girl. I loved how it smelled of flowers and had a hint of a plastic smell that made me think of my dolls. Ápeiron sounds like a present-day conjuring of a marvelous scent from the past, and it makes me smile to think of Diletta walking in her mother’s perfumed footsteps. I am in the US and thank you for the draw and wonderful review.

This is amazing……..Torino staff worked non-stop with Diletta Tonatto to create Apeiron with spectacular results. I love these remarkable wordings in the Lauryn’s review……. a vintage elegance that brings to mind those swanlike models – two violets in Ápeiron; the yesteryear makeup note mixed with tonka bean, and the dark velvet, leafy flower that emerges – the notes have been coming together and coalescing seamlessly – a signature of this refined house – baby’s breath and candied violets opening – If you stole Dorian Leigh from 1952, gave her an asymmetrical bob and dressed her in Tracy Reese – that is Ápeiron. Never tried any of the Tonatto Profumi but AMIR and ISS are on my want list.
Thanks to the generosity of Tonatto Profumi, and CAfleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in US.

  • Sadly I have never tried anything from Tonatto Profumi or visited Bonwit Teller.
Apeiron sounds like my kind of perfume, because I like vintage style and fragrances – vintage Miss Dior is a perfect unisex!
Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU.

I’m very curious to experience the “well-bred beginning” of this fragrance melding into the notes of licorice, plastic, and black cherry.
I never shopped at Bonwit Teller, but I remember seeing the name in the credits of TV shows– I think they supplied the wardrobe for many productions.
    I live in the USA.

  • Sounds to me like a bit powdery and feminine scent. The licorice should be a nice touch with a backbone of tonka. First to hear about Ápeiron from Diletta Tonatto. Thank you for this drawing! I do live in the US.

  • cinnamon tree says:

I love vintage-style perfumes, especially the ones with a violet note. Two different violets in one oerfume sounds like heaven! Thank you for so generous draw. I live in the EU.

  • I love the pictures. Violet is such a lovely note, so innocent and sensual at the same time. Thank you for the draw – I’d love to try Apeiron.

  • Liquorice note is my terra incognita. Of course I know it exists, but never had any chance of trying a perfume where I could smell it. Violet, on the other hand, is one of my favorite flowers: I love its powdery beauty. Apeiron sounds very interesting, having these two ingredients mixed together.
I haven’t tried Tonatto fragrances before and I hope I will have the chance this time. Thank you for the draw – I live in the EU.

  • Sound so vintage and yet so modern. I am very curious about this fragrance. I live in EU. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • It seems this perfume is close to the heart of the creative director.
I will love to see how she has managed to capture her creativity and emotions in this one.

  • The mix of vintage-y seamlessness and modern oomph sounds wonderful. I’m in the US, and while I have heard of Bonwit Teller, I never visited the store. Didn’t it make an appearance (or was at least mentioned) on Mad Men?

  • Oh I love violet perfumes and this one must be an excellent study in violets. The notes sound very intriguing and although I did know Tornatti perfumes I wasn’t aware of the Bonwit Teller store. Must have been a delight to visit! Thank you for the draw, I am in the UK

  • The mention of Gucci Rush captured my attention. It was one of the very first modern chypres with a synthetic (plastic?) note I discovered. I try to imagine similar notes mixed with violets and the result may be very interesting.

I have never tried Tonatto perfumes or visited Bonwit Teller.

I live in Europe. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • Delicate sheeny violet first, and then black cherry and ebony wood notes sound like a not-so-innocent combination, definitely more modern than vintage Miss Dior (which I like very much). What a great idea. As a violet lover I’d be delighted to win a bottle of Apeiron. Many thanks for the draw. I’m in the EU.

  • Licorice is a very popular food ingredient here in Scandinavia, being added to numerous sweets and salty-sweet treats, so I am curious about the smell of the fragrance in which the overall effect is not so sweet, but rather powdery, flowery. Never tried any perfumes by Tonatto which doubles my curiosity. Thank you for the draw and greetings from Norway.

  • Miss Almond says:

Oh, this is surely a 1000% feminine perfume! I’m a little bored with unisex fragrances recently so this would be a nice change. Please count me in! I ive in the EU, thanks 🙂

  • I love violet-tonka combination and I am sure I would love Apeiron.
Bonwit Teller was such an iconic place: the very essence of style. I have never been there but I think I still have somewhere one of their bags brought years ago to my mother by her aunt.
I live in Europe. Thank you for so lovely article with these beautiful photos.

  • Anna Egeria says:

Apeiron appeals to me because I love violet based fragrances and this sounds like a beautiful one. My mother and I shopped often at Bonwit Teller and I believe I still have one of those lovely bags. I’ve never tried a Tonatto fragrance. I’m in the US and thank you for this draw.

  • Vintage and modern. Powdery and woody. Sweet, but not too sweet. Sounds like a perfect spring fragrance! I am very curious about this scent. Thanks for the review and the draw. EU.

  • Apeiron sounds intriguing. I’m most curious about the ambergris note. I have had Dama in the past and loved it, so am wondering if Apeiron is at all similar? i do love tonatto perfumes, so unique and good quality.
