Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather
You got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat
And a brand-new pair of shoes
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all, a moment in the sun
It’s a-gone and you can tell that one goodbye.
Oh, put me in, coach
I’m ready to play today
Put me in, coach
I’m ready to play today
Look at me, I can be centerfield. ~ Centerfield, written by John Fogerty
Wrigley Field was built in 1914
When the Blocki family contacted Michelyn and me about their latest fragrance, Fielder’s Leather, I admit to a stealthy frisson of delight. What a marvelous concept – evoking the nostalgic tenderness of a well-loved and much-used baseball glove! Baseball, one of the great American passions, is the harbinger of spring and summer pleasures. This comes from a woman who has never quite figured out what is going on in the field (organized team sports are not my forte), but enjoys being swept up into the blazing heat and excitement of it all. After all, Boston is a Baseball Town, and we love our Red Sox, even if they’re having a deplorable season. The Blocki family are native Chicagoans, so they absolutely get it: they adore their Cubs, no matter what. There is a great story which accompanies Fielder’s Leather – and as is their wont, the Blockis always create fragrances which resonate deeply with their sense of civic and family pride. Perfume is personal to them, and a shared family endeavor – which renders them quite special to us at ÇaFleureBon.
Fred Blocki’s Season’s Pass
A little background: founder John Blocki began composing perfumes in 1865, at a time when American perfumery was still in its infancy. His son Fred was such an avid baseball fan that he was granted an American League Pass – which in those days (the early 1900s) signified that he had free admission to all Major League games for life. In fact, Fred was part of a syndicate which attempted to purchase the Chicago Cubs in 1914. His group was unsuccessful; Fred was outbid by Charles Weeghman, who purchased the Cubs in 1916 and built Weeghman Park, later to be resold to William Wrigley, Jr., in 1921. Renamed as Wrigley Field, it became the second-oldest major league park (Boston’s Fenway Park is the oldest).

“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” – Rogers Hornsby, infielder for the Chicago Cubs from 1929-32
How does Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather smell – and how does it make you feel? In a word: comfortable. Relaxed, untroubled, at ease: choose your alternative, if you will – as long as you acknowledge how precious it is to be surrounded by the warmth of familiarity, fond memory, and a sense of being cosseted. Unlike other leather-inspired fragrances, this one truly captures a cherished, weathered item – perhaps one handed down through the generations. That alone makes the aroma venerable, and gentle. As we know, a brand-new baseball glove will smell entirely different and much more raw than one which has seen the seasons come and go, and passed from hand to hand over the years. There is a patina, a malleability which only develops with time.

A little poetic license is helpful. Who am I to question what is intended by listing sunshine and wildflower as part of the given scent pyramid? We all need to keep a few trade secrets up our sleeve now and then. What I experience as I wear Fielder’s Leather is an amplified sensation of fresh air and fair weather, wrapped up in a leather which invites you to press it to your cheek and close your eyes. This perfume is smooth; it glows with the oils which emanate from one’s own skin burnished with amber, vetiver, and the sun-baked beauty of Atlas cedar. Brisk citrus notes introduce the more intense base ones, with an undefined soft floralcy bridging top and bottom. A little mystery is a fine thing; what matters is that Fielder’s Leather works. It wears lightly, effortlessly, and intimately. This fragrance is not a beast, although it conjures the animal hide from which it was fashioned; there is more insinuation than proclamation about the way it asserts its presence.

Is Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather a reasonable blind purchase? I would have to say yes – providing that you appreciate a supple leather which is realistically portrayed, artistic, and nuanced. This perfume reveals a narrative which develops and evolves, a quality which seems ever more scarce in modern perfumery. It is so easy to wear and enjoy – and suitable for any scenario one might wish to dream up. How many fragrances are in your closet that you only reach for on special occasions? I’d warrant that, if you are a perfume devotee, there are quite a few. Blocki Perfumes Fielder’s Leather is patently not one of those; it always feels just right. You don’t have to think about it, you simply wear it and feel wonderful.
