Being a Sr. Editor and writer for CaFleureBon means conveying in words the emotions felt in front of a perfume: it can start at first sight, when the bottle seems to promise a great discovery. But this is not a decisive criterion, far from it. The name of the perfumer(s) can also give a positive impulse, especially when one already appreciates their creativity. But, of course, nothing can replace the encounter with the fragrance itself. The one that questions me, starts my memories and emotions machine which I commonly call the brain. It is time to close my eyes and in just a few seconds, to be struck by a perfume that I have just discovered. You know what I’m talking about: everything is mixed up in the head, the heart starts to beat faster, and  words fail (here in French): “Waouh, oh là là, Mon Dieu!” are generally the ones I use when I am pleasantly surprised by an olfactory gem.

Voyages Imaginaires 100 percent botanical perfume

Voyages Imaginaires display in Milano last June, with an exclusive focus on L’Eau des Immortels – ©Emmanuelle Varron.

This is exactly how I felt on June 16 in Milan on the sidelines of Esxence 2022. Ida Meister, Ermano Picco, Karl Topham and myself were invited by Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal to (re)discover Voyages Imaginaires . Camille Goutal was unable to attend to attend, it was Isabelle Doyen who passionately presented to us the first five creations of the brand launched in 2020. What an opportunity to once again admire the artistic prowess of composing 100% botanical fragrances with a strong identity, and all the raw materials modeled with finesse and passion. Yes, perfume is an art, but here it particularly deserves a capital A. This programmed rediscovery was not innocent: it was Esxence time! And the surprise was more than exciting: it was Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels (Water of Immortals, that you can link with the immortelle flower). Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal had planned to surprise us with a new perfume, the release not being scheduled before the end of 2022… A nice gift, but a bit frustrating, since we had been asked to keep the secret. You can imagine my relief to FINALLY be able to share this launch with you! And I’ll skip you the last few weeks when, during my random encounters or my exchanges with the two perfumers, my only obsession was to ask them: “So, your immortal is coming out soon? Really, you promise?

Best Natural Perfumes

Voyages Imaginaires precious raw materials – ©Emmanuelle Varron.

Yes, from the first spray, I was struck by the beauty of Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels. Like its five predecessors, the mastery of raw materials is remarkable. Neither comes to step on the other; they go together in a natural harmony, beyond fashions and a perfumery that tells, alas, everything after ten seconds. The perfume becomes material again, lives and changes without constraint, like an olfactory lace worked with delicacy, and yet resistant to time. From the outset, the immortelle is revealed, in all its salty, spicy and leathery complexity. Solar, it wraps delicately on the skin, letting unfold a floral note close to the rose, but almost evanescent. I also perceive in L’Eau des Immortels a gourmet praline facet, where vanilla and tonka bean bring a regressive sweetness, carried by the honeyed aspect of immortelle; a gourmet sweetness, but above all not sweet. Amyris also takes over to bring a suave woody touch, which sometimes on my skin is close to incense. Balms are probably no strangers to this: Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal have reinforced the character of Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels with benzoin and labdanum, for a fragrance that could be compared to a magic potion. This is where the inspiration of the two perfumers comes from: “And finally discover, in the heart of a spring, a precious liquid of amber hues: the elixir of immortality”.

Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen

Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen- courtesy of the brand

My memories being particularly linked to music, I quickly associated L’Eau des Immortels with The Tragedy of Carmen, a Peter Brook adaptation of the famous Georges Bizet opera. I was only 9 years old when I attended the show at the Paris Bouffes du Nord theater, but for me it remains the most realistic version of this essential opera, both wild and without unnecessary pageantry. And the perfume composed by Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal is a potion wonderfully matched to the Sevillian heroine. Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels is bottled poetry, powerful and passionate. A rare elixir, of those that we simply qualify as “Masterpiece”, and  will be in my top ten of the year..

Notes: bergamot, immortelle, vanilla, tonka bean, amyris, benzoin, labdanum.

  • What really drew me into L’Eau des Immortels in the review was the comparison to an opera which helps visualize the the variety of scents that make up this perfume, yet all come together to form a harmony. From TX, US.

  • Yes. I have never tried it and don’t have anything from this brand, therefore extremely interested. Thank you
    I am from USA

  • Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels seems like an interesting take on immortelle note. After all, immortelle note was made famous by Goutal Sables. This line seems like a natural perfumery version of Annick Goutal line, given the compositions. I am in US.

  • The fantastic details and how beautifully composed the review is for sure sparks my interest. I think that this fragrance is a very unique and outstanding one. I love it’s presentation. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • John Michael says:

This is the true definition of art. From the juice, the bottle its in all the way to the box. Absolutely beautiful. I live in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • Wow! This sounds like an absolute stunner! The golden sun vibes sounds mesmerizing. I’m from MA, USA.

  • wow i didn’t know anything from the brand the article is an introduction to the house for me. what sparks my interest about Emmanuelle’s review is that the releases are 100% botanical. I live in EU

  • Immortelle is one my favorite notes. I have yet to smell any 100% natural composition with it. Curious on its relationship, iff any to Sables. Glad it will eventually be available at Indigo. I am in the US

  • What has me intrigued by this one is the comparison to the nectar of the gods, the honeyed elixir of the immortals – this paints such a vivid picture in my mind, almost as if the perfume would imbue me with some mystical power. The notes sounds delectable as well. Immortelle, vanilla, and tonka – a naturally sweet and suede-like combo – on top of benzoin, yes, this is right up my alley. Reading from North Carolina, USA.

  • This sounds divine! I love ambers that feel somehow like they’re elixirs that have existed forever. I also loved the inspiration behind this. I think fragrance and music are linked in that they by-pass our ‘thinking’ brain and go right to the emotional core of our being. Amazing!

    California, USA.

  • I can’t imagine trying an amazing perfume and then having to keep it secret! You have more self control than me. I am a huge tonka and immortelle fan and would love to try L’Eau des Immortels. If I don’t win a bottle I’ll hop over to Indigo’s website to try a sample! I live in Indiana.

  • “My memories being particularly linked to music”

Other than a fragrance lover, collector and a nerd , I’m also an audiophile , and I can relate to Karl’s statement.
I’ve seen people posting pictures on Instagram, but I’m not familiar with Voyages Imaginaires.
Bohemian avant-garde pefumery , i have high expectations for L’Eau des Immortels , because of Emmanuelle Varron artsy review, the classy , not dripping sweet scent profile ,but also because of the noses , Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen made the iconic Ninfeo Mio by Goutal .
Isabelle Doyen also composed the venerated by almost all ex- , and current Cafleurebon reviewers , Nuit de Bakélite by Naomi Goodsir.
All other profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg

  • Sables was one of my favorite fragrances when I discover it. It had immortelle, it was strong, loud, different, worth remembering. If L’Eau des Immortels has something, anything in common with Sables, then I am sold! Thank you! Europe

  • I’ve never heard of this house before, but the fragrance seems extremely multifaceted with sweet, woody, and floral leanings. Seem perfect for spring, or for any transitional season. Would love to win a bottle – Live in Pittsburgh, PA.

  • Gourmet praline…..yes!!! Top 10 of the year…..double yes!! The Goutal name attaches, yes yes yes. I am not familiar with this line. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Sounds delicious! I’m intrigued by the amyris note, which is described by Emmanuelle as smelling like incense. I love Indigo Perfumery. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • “The perfume becomes material again, lives and changes without constraint, like an olfactory lace worked with delicacy, and yet resistant to time.” This is so so beautiful. It’s the essence of a beautiful perfume. No doubt that Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels Inspired Emmanuelle.

Being a great fan of Isabelle Doyen work and of Sables, I can not wait discovering it ! This house is making amazing perfumes, several of which I am really fond of. I wish I could smell the other notes in L’Eau des Immortels (the gourmet praline facets, the amyris, benzoin, labdanum), which is what triggers my interest in Muriel’s description.
Thanks for the journey back to Spring!

  • L’Eau des Immortels- balm for the skin, poetry for the soul. Emmanuelle‘s writing is so inviting to reverie.
I would love to win a bottle. I live in Portugal/EU

  • What sparked my interest in Emmanuelle’s review is the claim “…the mastery of raw materials is remarkable. Neither comes to step on the other; they go together in a natural harmony, beyond fashions and a perfumery that tells, alas, everything after ten seconds.”

  • I’m big into opera, so the comparison to The Tragedy of Carmen is one I certainly appreciate. I really like the note of immortelle so I feel like I would most certainly love this fragrance, so I hope I can win. Great review from Emmanuelle.

  • I have never heard of this brand before, so I’m glad you featured it in you blog. This quote really intrigued me, although, I’m not 100% sure what Emmanuelle means:

“Neither comes to step on the other; they go together in a natural harmony, beyond fashions and a perfumery that tells, alas, everything after ten seconds. The perfume becomes material again, lives and changes without constraint, like an olfactory lace worked with delicacy, and yet resistant to time.”

Beautiful write-up, Emmanuelle, and I am most certainly excited for the oppurtunity of trying this new fragrance after reading your stellar review.

  • Emmanuelle writes so beautifully, it’s always such a joy to read. This was no different, with comparisons to opera and heroine (?) sparking my interest, to say the least. The quality here seems to be exceptionally high and the smell – on account of Emmanuelle’s high praise – sounds divine. Good luck everyone!

  • The link between The Tragedy of Carmen and L’eau Des Immortels seen by Emmanuelle Varon and the gourmandish praline touch draws me!From EU with love!

  • Dear Emmanuelle, sharing the emotion you had smelling Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels it is a gift. As you say, until you spray the fragrance and give the first sniffs, everything can happen, as you have been moonstruck by Immortellle and the other botanics that Goutal and Doyen have created. As you say the perfume lives and changes not like many others than in a few seconds they told the whole story. As a lover of Immortelle with its spices, liqueur, wood and fruit tones, being one of my preferred fragrances is Immortelle Corse by Corticchiato) I can understand the gem you sniffed that turned into an elixir for the year to come. I live in Spain, EU.

  • What sparked my interest the most was Emmanuelle mentioning L’Eau des Immortels as being a fragrance fit for Carmen, Bizet / Brook’s heroine. If any perfume can match such a character and story, then it must be a very imposing one.
It truly sounds like a deep, enveloping balsamic experience, judging by the notes.
    Writing from EU, thanks!

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for this beautiful discovery. I was really interested By your olfactory description. I love the immortelle so much that every summer I do some infusion in oil to smell this solar note all the year long. But mixed with all this balms, typical from Sevilla, or Greece butches, it seems like a miracle. I would be so so happy to discover it. Thank you for everything from Nice (France).

  • The whole collection is already amazing, in particular La Couleur de la Nuit, L’Echapée Sauvage and Tea and Rock’nRoll, which are my favorites.
The description of L’Eau des Immortels as a magic potion raises my interest, particularly in this cold weather. Thanks a lot for the review, I will try to smell this one as soon as I can.

  • I was sparked by the reviewer calling this new perfume a masterpiece and, that it will have a place on their year-end top ten list. US

  • I’m a big fan of Voyages Imaginaires’ commitment to natural perfumery and raw materials. Immortelle is such a unique, complex ingredient – and Emmanuelle’s review describing how the immortelle plays with the gourmand aspects of the perfume has me very intrigued! Best wishes from the US.

  • Bonjour, Quelle belle présentation qui donne envie de découvrir “L’eau des Immortels”. J’ai envie d’emporter au quotidien avec moi mes rêves, dans le sillage de mon parfum préféré. • My goodness does this perfume perform. Beautiful review Emmanuelle. Such a treat to try it in Milan with you and it simply shines in the winter. Bravo Voyages Imaginaires.

  • Loved the reviews as usual! Anything with all natural ingredients is intriguing to me. This one being so masterfully crafted, with the naturals, just sounds wonderful. I live in Boston, USA.

  • As a fan of immortelle, I find Emmanuelle’s review compelling to read. Natural immortelle is amazing, and I am happy this creation reveals it entirely without one aspect overpowering the other. Reinforcing immortelle with woody aspects and benzoin compliments that amazing immortelle note. I would like to try it of course.

    USA

  • Immortelle is a tricky note for me. It struck a discordant tone in some of the compositions I’ve tried, while in others it was sublime (e,g AG Sables). In part it depends on the blending skill of the perfumer. Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels sounds lovely with its emphasis on gourmand woody notes, such as vanilla, tonka, and amyris. Would love to try it! MD, USA.

  • Immortelle is an ingredient I need to learn more about. Paired with vanilla, tonka, labdanum, and bergamot sounds like it would create a nectar for the immortals. I enjoyed how it was described as nearing sweet but just dancing around it. Now I want to smell this perfume and listen to the opera you mention. Thank you, in TX.

  • “The perfume becomes material again, lives and changes without constraint, like an olfactory lace worked with delicacy, and yet resistant to time. • What a generous giveaway! It must be hard to keep perfume secrets…What sparks my interest are all the botanicals used for l’Eau des Immortels, and the skill of the amazing perfumers.

  • Emmanuelle!!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a touching and beautiful review!!! I’m absolutely dying to experience this fragrance! ❤️ I can picture Carmen draped in notes of Immortelle, tonka, labdanum, etc. How Gorgeous! Thank you for this Amazing opportunity! USA ❤️❤️

  • I seem to be honing in closer and closer to all natural lines. They have a life in them that others just don’t have. It’s not something describable but it is palpable. I trust these perfumers and can only imagine what an ambery based on immortelle fragrance is like in their masterful hands!! Super intrigued!!

  • Sounds like Emmanuelle was really taken aback by Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels. “mastery of raw materials…ingredients work in harmony… bottled poetry, powerful & passionate. A rare elixir, will be in my top ten of the year.” After this type of praise I would really love to smell this beautiful creation.
    Maryland, US.

  • Thank you Emmanuelle for capturing my imagination with the mention of Bizet’s Carmen, Habanera has been one my favorite arias – seems lately I’ve been getting my music fix from cafleurebon 🙂 This has me most definitely intrigued by L’Eau des Immortels. I’m in USA

  • Nom de Guerre says:

The sum of quality ingredients and great noses make “Waouh, oh là là, Mon Dieu!” a reality 🙂 Thank you for introducing me to Voyages Imaginaires. Greetings from Riga, Latvia!

  • There has to be something truly powerful and enchanting about this perfume for having evoked both ‘Carmen’ and the elixir of immortality. Because of my inexperience with immortelle as an ingredient, I can’t even imagine how it would play with chocolate and labdanum but Emmanuelle’s truly poetic review makes me want to discover it.
For the draw, I’m based in the UK.

  • Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels is partially relaxing , partially provocative and seductive, aromatic , sweet and deep , chameleon fragrance if I have to guess.
I understand Emmanuelle Varron connected the fragrance to The Tragedy of Carmen opera from Georges Bizet , but I actually sense the footprint of modern fragrance. I can’t explain why, but I started thinking about the great Prince , RIP.
    Thanks for the draw

  • I really like Emmanuelle Varron take on L’Eau des Immortels , but I believe clarification is needed , because of:

“I also perceive in L’Eau des Immortels a gourmet praline facet…”

Being a classically trained in Paris Pastry Chef , I’d like to say “Praline” is an ambiguous term even in Europe’s more conservative culinary schools.
Praline in Europe, and in US means two very different things!
☆ For most Europeans, pralines usually involve chocolate, specifically chocolate filled with a paste made of hazelnuts or other wonderful confectionery mixtures.
☆ But for most of those , who’ve enjoyed Pralines from the U.S. , especially the state of Louisiana, and other southern states , pralines are primary a melted blend of sugars, butter and almost all the time pecans.
The taste and the flavor differs VERY much, basically after reading Emmanuelle Varron line i quoted, Europeans and Americans would expect very different accord.
I hope this helps , and you don’t mind my clarification.
What kind of praline accord was blended into L’Eau des Immortels I could only guess, but Emmanuelle Varron is French , and at one point part of team Pierre Hermé , so more chocolate and hazelnut …maybe?
Her take on the fragrance made me think of being on vacation in Normandy, and visiting the famous Social Perk coffee shop in Rouen , brick-layered walls , leather sofas, cozy atmosphere and nice praline desserts.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • L’Eau des Immorteles has some stunning notes! Tonka, vanilla and benzoin are good enough on their own, but I feel that the note of immortelle is the cherry on top of the cake! Sounds wonderful! Thanks!

  • I like how Emmanuelle showed us Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels , with the help of Georges Bizet “The Tragedy of Carmen” opera , and her Parisian childhood memories . The leather, incense and honey like sweetness, coming from the Immortelle are , together with “masterpiece” description i find most intriguing.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Wow, that Emmanuelle’s tenderness and passion while describing this Masterpiece. I also liked that writer pointed out the dramatic side of it, linking to an opera. I wish to experience the beauty of this fragrance one day.
    Lithuania, EU.

  • L’Eau des Immortels sounds really interesting and wonderful to me. The notes are all notes I enjoy and I like the fact that it is all natural as well. Also, the fact that it brought such feelings to Emmanuelle also makes the prospect of trying it that much more exciting. That she said, ” Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels is bottled poetry, powerful and passionate. A rare elixir, of those that we simply qualify as “Masterpiece”, and will be in my top ten of the year..” is quite the statement and I would love to experience it. Thank you for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels sounds beautiful, highlighting the complexities in immortelle and making the most of an fully botanical formula. I also appreciate the focus in this notes list; seven listed, with three of those being often coordinated base notes that reinforce and highlight all the accords they support. I’d love to try this elegant design. Thanks for the coverage, Emmanuelle.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Great review by the one and onaly Emmanuelle.
I love the vibe that this fragrance has, the mastery in the raw materials, the notes, the inspiration behind. Everything seems to blend into the perfect for special ocations.
I would totally this to go to the opera or for new years eve.
    USA here.

  • Thanks to Indigo I was able to buy Tea and Rock and Roll, because this brand is very hard to find in the USA. Isabelle Doyen is one fo my favorite perfumers and I own Sables
I am excited for L’Eaux de Immortels.
” A rare elixir, of those that we simply qualify as “Masterpiece”,”
    YES!

  • I love the comparison to the heroine Carmen by Emmanuelle, as well as the praline description. I am a huge fan of immortelle (and all of the notes in this fragrance, truly!) and would love to try this. I am in the US, in Illinois. Thank you!

  • Immortelle is such a compelling note, it brings so much character to any perfume that it’s part of. After reading this I scurried to my perfume cabinet to spritz on some L’Artisan Parfumeur Mandarin Corsica, which is totally different, but features immortelle prominently. Immortelle really does lend itself well to a “gourmet praline” facet, which Emmanuelle described in Voyage Imaginaire’s L’Eau des Immortels. I’d love to try a perfume that centers on Immortelle this way, especially in a 100% botanical perfume. I am in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Voyages Imaginaires, what a beautiful name for a beautiful composition. If the scent brings Emmanuelle the memories of The Tragedy of Carmen, a true masterpiece amongst the operas, then it must be a masterpiece itself. Greetings from Poland, EU

  • I’ve heard about “The Tragedy of Carmen”, but unlike Emmanuelle Varron , I can’t say I’m into opera that much, jazz and soul are my favorite styles of music. Unlike the opera , I’m into jazz clubs , and live music events , L’Eau des Immortels checks all the boxes for one special artisanal fragrance suited for such occasions
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I’m a huge fan of immortelle, and benzoin and labdanum make up some of my favorite base materials. Plus I love when perfumers use 100percent botanicals. It feels like magic when I wear them. And ofc Isabelle Doyen, maker of Nuit de Bakelite and one of my favorite noses. I live in Missouri, USA and I’d be overjoyed to be able to wear this masterpiece.

Wow , L’Eau des Immortels should be on breathtaking level, to impress miss Varron to such degree
Bouffes du Nord is near by Gare du Nord in Paris 10th arrondissement , I’ve been there, it’s rather small theater.
No wonder she said there’s no unnecessary pageantry over there, because there is none , on the outside it looks like a bank , I’m no operagoer , but it’s very different feeling going there , compared to the ultra glamourous Opéra Garnier for example.
The special moments of Bouffes du Nord do happen inside.
Small theater, quality experience, that’s why miss Varron made the connection between The Tragedy of Carmen , Bouffes du Nord and L’Eau des Immortels , the fragrance is leaning more to artistic, rather than the glamourous Parisian lifestyle.
So typically Le bonheur de vivre . Everyone needs to loosen up from time to time , to drink some champagne and maybe even eat some praline delicacy during the intermission
Thank you , American living in Paris, France

  • A very interesting and captivating read. In the description of the new fragrance, I was interested in the fact that this masterpiece is a 100% botanical creation and that although there is vanilla and tonka bean and a hint of praline, it is not the usual sweet perfume. Greetings from Europe.

  • Wow – what a glowing tribute to Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels by Emmanuelle. I can’t wait to try it. I haven’t tried the other perfumes by these talented perfumers, but I am very intrigued. The incense notes in Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels really interest me, along with the fact that it’s a plant based perfume. Not a plethora of notes, but the ones that are in Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels are all to my liking. Thanks for the review and draw. I am from the USA.

    Thanks for the great review.

Only great things can come from those who have worked with Annick Goutal.

I love the simplicity in the notes of this fragrance – it really shows that one has to master the materials to create magic. These are notes that show up so so many fragrances, many of them are not much to write about.

I would love to get my nose on this.

What interests me about Emmanuelle’s review of Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels is learning about this new brand that started in 2020 with 100% botanical fragrances. On their 6th release Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal have releases a balsamic and resinous masterpiece as Emmanuelle describes in. I’m really drawn in by the note breakdown and scent profile which really resonates with my personal taste. I am from the USA.

  • Fragrances like Voyages Imaginaires L’Eau des Immortels i like , is artistic natural fragrance, having both fougere and aromatic features. Often immortelle fragrances do turn not into leather, but into sweet honeyed tobacco , something to be seen.
I the contrast between the different stages of the fragrance , and the opera kind of sophisticated feel.
Thank you Emmanuelle Varron, Voyages Imaginaries

  • Lovely review Emmanuelle! What sparks my interest about Emmanuelle’s review is learning the brand creates only 100% botanical fragrances with a strong identity, and all the raw materials modeled with finesse and passion. i love all natural fragrances so that intrigues me deeply. i can’t wait to try it!
    I live in the US.
