If I don’t go crazy, I’ll lose my mind
I saw a life before me but now I’m blind
I wanna go to heaven, never been there before
I wanna go to heaven, so you give me some more – “Scorpio Rising” by Liam Gallagher
Scorpio, the eighth astrological sign, is the one they always tell you to watch out for. Reputed to be hot-tempered, passionate, charismatic, secretive, and, of course, the carnal powerhouse of the zodiac – that’s Scorpio. Scorpions can seduce with a glance or sting the hell out those who cross them. Even those milder creatures possessed of Scorpio as their rising sign cannot resist their scorpion tendencies, and, in the indisputable judgment of Cosmo, “operate like a volcano.” As a Scorpio myself, my advice to those so blessed (or burdened, depending on your take) is to just give in. It is pointless to fight us.

For those with Scorpio in their astrological house or who are simply Scorpio-curious, white-hot Eris Parfums Scorpio Rising is all you need to harness your inner predatory arachnid. Created in extrait form by Antoine Lie alongside ERIS Parfums founder and Author Barbara Herman, smouldering, spicy Scorpio Rising is one long, slow burn of incense, woods and leather that will have even the most balanced Libra or virtuous Virgo easing into venomous ways in no time.
If you think Sriracha is too mild for you, open a bottle of ERIS PARFUMS Scorpio Rising. Fruity pink pepper and pungent crack black pepper kick the bottle open with such a sizzle I almost expect to hear that sszzttss of oil bouncing off a hot pan as Scorpio Rising hits my skin. A big pinch of cinnamon in adds a sensation of red hots to the mix and my mouth remembers the pleasant sting of the candy. Sweeter spices come after, turning down the heat from boiling to simmer with cooling, eucalyptic clove and cardamom. The camphorous spices here add dimension to the pepper, teasing out its winey and woody qualities. But of course, M. Lie does not allow Scorpio Rising to remain where it is, a piquant Commes des Garcons-style spice bomb, but as befits the astrological sex goddess, takes the fragrance into sultrier territory.
The next stage is resinous, embery Somalian incense wrapping its tendrils around some subtle immortelle in a lover’s clinch. As the maple syrup flower and wafts of burning incense coalesce, saffron snakes in to heat things back up. Saffron is a strange spice for me; in big doses, it can come across unpleasantly like tinned tomatoes past their expiry date. But in judicious amounts, it can add a dusty, aromatic heat as it does here. The zigzag of hot and cold spice throughout the fragrance is, I must observe, prototypically Scorpio; we are a passionate people, after all.

As the incense and saffron do their thing, and the pepper circles back for an encore, there are darker things brewing. Scorpio Rising turns down the lights and ittsssss time for leatha, baby! Using a decadent 25% leather extrait concentration, the fragrance goes kitten-with-a-whip. But soon, the leather is mixing with some loamy vetiver and cedar, augmented by cypriol, and Scorpio Rising becomes a beautifully blended amalgam of earthy, woody, spicy notes all filtering through a smoky cloud of smooth incense. Projection is moderate.

Now, I know there are those think of Scorps as a bunch of thunderously crazy divas, full of Dostoesvkian rages and tears, prickly as porcupines, seducing all and sundry, and then squirreling away after all the drama into some dark bunker just to be enigmatic. But we have our cuddly side, and that is manifest in the richly cocooning way Scorpio Rising envelopes its wearer as it heads towards dry-down. Rounding out the base are the smoothest of woods — cashmeran, sandalwood, and guaiac – which add a velvety layer to the fragrance just as the spices circle back once more. Sensual, spicy Scorpio Rising is as warm as the blood coursing through your veins in those moments you feel most alive.
Notes: Pink pepper, black pepper, clove bud, cinnamon absolute (all from La Réunion, Madagascar); Indian cardamom, French immortelle, Somalian incense, Indian cypriol, Atlas cedarwood, guaiac wood, saffron, sandalwood, ambroxan, cashmeran, Haitian vetiver, leather (Extrait/25% concentration – ingredients from L’Atelier Français des Matières).
