Trauma. Stress. Anxiety. Fear. Isolation. Loneliness. Travel restrictions. I think many of us would say that the past two years have been unlike any years in our lifetimes. So, what is the connection to perfume? Ingredients such as lavender, bergamot, chamomile, citrus, frankincense, jasmine, rose, vanilla that have been used for thousands of years to treat instability, anxiety and depression; they can be calming, grounding, meditative, uplifting and even used in some cultures as an aphrodisiac. Our sense of smell is links us to our memories. I asked Video Contributor Steven Gavrielatos to choose his personal top ten feel good fragrances for 2022. (Take a deep dive into how scent affects our wellbeing by reading Deputy Editor Ida Meister’s Award winning article “Scent and Healing: The transformative power of perfume”–Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief
Feel Good Fragrances @redolesssence
Floraiku I Am Coming Home (Sophie Labbe) Where there is tea, there is paradise…an old Russian saying: I am coming home by Floraiku is a tea-based fragrance that creates the ultimate feeling of serenity. This tranquil composition combines white tea with ginger and is sure to comfort you.
Milano Fragranze Naviglio (Michelle Moelhausen): With Milano Fragranze, the brand’s founder, Alessandro Brun, takes us on an olfactive journey around his home city of Milan. With Milano Fragranze’s Naviglio, the scent is evocative of the blue-collar workers of the city washing their clothes in the nearby canals. The soapy quality of the fragrance is completely novel, and the citrus top is comprised of neroli and bergamot from Calabria. Lavender also contributes to the soap accord, and a base of cedar and white musk create the dichotomy between earthy and clean.
Jovoy Paris Fire At Will (Vanina Muracciole): Fire at Will is a vanilla masterpiece and the ultimate feel good vanilla of 2021. For Jovoy Paris Fire At Will, perfumer Vanina Muracciole adds her personal signature, a little je ne sais quoi that makes the difference. This time it was an amazing mimosa note on top that added a unique twist. Vanilla has two distinct benefits: calming, and is also said to be an aphrodisiac
Xerjoff Symphonium (Chris Maurice) is chocolate done right! Chocolate contains some of the chemicals produced by the brain when we fall in love, which might be one of the reasons it is so popular as a gift for Valentine’s Day and such an addictive note in perfumery. This gourmand perfume fuses Belgian chocolate with Brazilian orange and cardamom. There are two varieties of agarwood in the base. Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel in an interview with Editor Michelyn Camen calls Oud aka agarwood “the most erotic raw material” and ties together its use as both medicine and aphrodisiac.
Nishane Ege Ilias Ermenidis is a refreshing take on aromatic profile. This bright and luminous composition showcases notes of basil and mint. The yuzu fruit in the opening is fresh in an unconventional way. Incense grounds the fragrance. Notes include: yuzu, violet leaves, anise, basil, green cardamom, mint, olibanum, licorice
Roja Parfums Creation-E Pour Homme (Roja Dove) is a celebratory scent like none other. Every year is a new beginning. The cognac accord is rich and flavorful as we are also delighted by the sophisticated nature of tobacco and the richness of vanilla.
Kajal Lamar (Mark Buxton): “Journey from the self to the Self and find the mine of gold. Leave behind what is sour and bitter and move toward the sweet.”-RUMI Kajal Lamar is a very much a rose perfume; rose is known to bring harmony and warm feelings. Lamar is gilded in golden amber, and jasmine and vanilla add sensuality.
Memo Corfu (Phillipe Parparella): Memo released Corfu in 2021 and this olfactive trip takes Steven to the island in Greece where he spent happy childhood years. Notes include: Bergamot, rhubarb, mandarin, cassis, grapefruit, lemon, orange, basil, rose, musk, jasmine, peach, raspberry, geranium, clove, orris, sandalwood, cedar, amber, moss, patchouli
Parfums de Marly Habdan (Guillame Flavigny) has a combination of frankincense and sweet myrrh which are believed to relieve stress, are grounding and release negative emotions. Steven detects the calming presence of chamomile. Notes: Amber, incense, oppoponox, rose
Strangelove NYC’s LostinFlowers (Christophe Laudamiel): This is the top of Steven’s list of feel good fragrances. LostinFlowers smells like hope, renewal and new beginnings. Jasmine and gardenia are said to be mood boosters, reduce depression and anxiety as well as raise libido. Much more than the sum of its notes, one of the beautiful florals Steven (and MIchelyn) has smelt. Notes: jasmine, red champaca, gardenia enfleurage, saffron, oud, lily of the valley, marigold.
Video Journalist Steven Gavrielatos with contributions from Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief)- DISCLOSURE we are not aromatherapists and we do not claim that these perfumes will make you feel good. But you will smell great.
