WE LOVE THIS STORE: Scent Bar NYC + Niche Perfume Boutique Reopens Draw

Scent Bar NYC reopens in August 2020

Scent Bar NYC reopens!!!

When the pandemic changed our lives, in March of 2020,  I wondered how the fragrance shopping experience would evolve for the boutiques and department stores going forward. Clearly, events were off the table for the foreseeable future. Over the months with stores shuttered, fragrance aficionados wondered what to expect from ‘the new normal’ once allowed to shop again. One thing is for sure, online purchasing was the only way for fragrance aficionados to get their fix while quarantine and Luckscent, THE premier online destination in the USA  for all niche, artistic and hard to find brands, was certainly the go-to destination for many perfumistas.  After launching  Luckyscent online in 2002, founders Franco Wright and Adam Eastwood, expanded their business when they opened their first Scent Bar in Los Angeles in 2006 with a second following in the downtown area a few years later.

At the end of the summer of 2019, rumor had it that  Luckyscent was opening Scent Bar NYC on Elizabeth Street, located in one of New York City’s premiere fragrance shopping meccas (joining notable brands Le Labo, Atelier Cologne, and Cire Trudon amongst others on the block). Expectations ran high in the fragrance community. Opening October 1st, 2019 (I stopped by for a look-see) they certainly set the bar high. For the store’s launch, Perfumer Antonio Gardoni created I LOVE YY. Later in the month Scent Bar NYC participated in Sniffapalooza’s Fall Ball and it was by far the most anticipated scent stop of the weekend. As our city slowly reopened for retail shopping in mid August I reached out to Vijay Uttam, Sales and Education at Scent Bar NYC, I set up an hour consultation to find out what the fragrance experience would look like during the Pandemic.

Scent Bar NYC Entrance Policy

Vijay greeted me warmly at the door. At the entrance was the three guest policy (same group) for the safety of the staff and customers. If another customer(s) arrives they are asked to return in 10-15 minutes to allow the current customer(s) to receive the complete personalized service.  Before getting down to perfume, Vijay ran through the protocols that Scent Bar NYC has been put into effect since re-opening and how the boutique practices “safe scents”.

Upon entry, customers are asked to sanitize  their hands and masks are provided if needed. The main counter has also been cleared of bottles and blotter strips. Once a fragrance has been chosen Vijay will spray the blotter strip(s) and put them down on the counter tips folded up so as not to interact with the counter. Customers are then asked to take a few steps back from the counter (Vijay likewise) so then they can lower their mask and sniff at ease. He offers to spray on customers’ wrists, arms, etc. Touching the bottle(s) is discouraged. Used blotters strips are put into a vessel and disposed of. The vessel will then be sanitized.

If any bottles or candles are taken off the side shelves and touched customers are asked not to return them to the original locations but to put them on the counter to know what needs to be sanitized. Clearly, everything has been thought of to make the olfactory experience safe and enjoyable.

Before getting down to sniffing I had a few questions:

How many customers have also visited one of the LA stores? Vijay estimated 15-20% and 70% have shopped on the Luckyscent website.

I asked, “What percentage of the fragrances available on the website are carried in the store? He thought approximately 50%.

If interested in a certain bottle(s) it is advisable to call in advance to determine if on-premise. They can be ordered and delivered to the store if needed. I was also interested in learning more about WHO shops at Scent Bar NYC.  I was surprised to learn that the answer is “Male 70%, female 30%. It’s been Vijay’s experience that they shop differently. “The men generally are very well researched, and many come in with a list. The women generally want to enhance their overall image. They are generally more open to suggestions”.

Since re-opening, Vijay Uttam is overseeing all aspects of Scent Bar NYC  solo but he expects to staff up in the Fall as the holidays approach. I was with Vijay for an hour; customers waited patiently outside for us to wrap up. One way to guarantee a seamless visit is to make an appointment in advance. Similar to the LA outposts, Scent Bar NYC is set-up to focus on the ingredients and olfactory character of scents as opposed to by brands that customers find very helpful.

I asked, How do you work with a customer that needs guidance? “A fragrance consultation gets it started. Questions like what fragrances they have or like. Any Specific flavors? Do they like light scents shear fragrances. Ingredients, strength. What speaks to you?” According to Vijay,  “85% will make a  purchase It’s the trust factor. Getting it right. No pressure. A velvet glove approach.” I asked if the customer is price sensitive?  He replied, “Only if they mention they are looking to purchase a gift. I always include a sample with a purchase. So as long as the package is unopened it can be exchanged.”

Samples are not sold at Scent Bar NYC, but two complimentary samples per customer are offered. If they desire more they are direct to the website to purchase. Behind the counter, on the main wall, the lighter fragrances are presented on the left and the darker ones on the right.

Top ten brands at luckyscent and scent bar nyc niche perfumes for newbies and experts are Villa Nellcote Eau de Parfum by 19-69 and Nishane Fan Your Flames

Vijay of Scent Bar NYC with Villa Nellcote Eau de Parfum by 19-69 and Nishane Fan Your Flames

I asked Vijay to have a fragrance consultation “role-playing”… me as a new to niche customer (citrus and patchouli please) and then as an experienced scent expert (cedar and oakmoss). After running through questions and based on my input he chose Villa Nellcote Eau de Parfum by 19-69 for the new-to-niche customer.  He suggested  Nishane Fan Your Flames for the “scent expert”, he was right on and those were two samples I took home.

Before departing I asked Vijay for a Top Ten list.

  • I love that Scent Bar has transformed “restrictions” into an opportunity to emphasize an intimate and personal approach to exploring fragrances. Sounds like it’s worth the wait! Thank you for this generous draw.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I liked how Vijay discussed how men and women tend to buy fragrances differently Nice to see how Scent Bar strives to keep the staff and customers safe with sanitary protocols.

  • Such a wonderful opportunity! Thank you! I love Vijay’s recommendation! I love hearing all the gorgeous brands they carry! I live in the USA

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Was in the area last year and made sure to stop by. Such a great place and everyone was very nice. As a small business owner myself, I know what it’s like to try to keep things afloat right now. Hopefully we’re all in good spirits business-wise come this time next year.
Appreciate the article, it brought back the great memories – felt like I was there once again.
    Thanks for the giveaway

Glad to see they’re being as safe as possible! I would still be uncomfortable going into a place where I would be constantly sniffing lol. I’ve always wanted to try Escentric Molecules fragrances, such an interesting concept. Would love to get this one.

  • Going to Scent Bar sounds like a fantastic experience that I would love to experience. I was impressed with the fastidiousness with which they are taking precautions against COVID-19. I was surprised at the 70/30 gender breakdown. I would like to go there the next time I am in New York.

  • The first time I go to NYC I’m also going to swing by this store! It looks great. Also the procedure to make everyone safe inside sounds very well thought of. I must say that the most interesting thing that I read is that 70% of the customers are men, although when I think about it I am not surprised. But it was interesting to read how man and women shop differently. I live in Illinois, US.

  • I liked the layout of the fragrances, lighter scents on the left, darker on the right. I would be happily sniffing the right side, lol. Thanks for the tour and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I visited Scent Bar NYC a few years go when I was in the city It’s an great place to spend a few hours if you’re a perfume aficionado. I’m happy to see they are reopening and that they are taking proper precautions so everyone remains safe. I look forward to the day we can have more normal interactions, Commenting from the US.

  • The opening of Scent Bar NYC is another sign that we are edging back to normal. Hernando’s review highlighted a few surprising facts: (I) the customers are mostly male, (II) MFK isn’t in the top ten list (especially given its popularity on Lucky Scent) and (III) the store is run solo by Vijay (so far). What isn’t surprising is the protocol that the store follows under current conditions. That’s comforting, and being a NYer myself, I’m planning a visit soon.

  • I appreciate the personalized service that still maintains safe practices. I’ve always been curious about having a fragrance consultation.

  • I really like how Vijay said, “The men generally are very well researched, and many come in with a list. The women generally want to enhance their overall image. They are generally more open to suggestions”. As a male, I can 100% confirm that. Jokes aside, I love the brands that they carry!

  • Love Scent bar and their website lucky scent. Used to frequent their DTLA location when I travelled to LA. Unfortunately, haven’t been up that way in a bit. But thankfully the website it great. I guess a bit surprised to hear the high % of men buying in the shop, I thought it would be more balanced.

  • I enjoyed the fragrance consultation roll play and also that they went over their current procedures for keeping everything sanitary. I found it interesting and a bit surprising that he mentioned customers are usually only price sensitive if it is a gift. I am in the U.S. Thanks for the generous giveaway.

  • You all are so lucky to have Scent Bar close to where you live. We have so little where I live. I’m not surprised by all the care and concern during Covid; I would be surprised if it was otherwise. Thanks for a great visit. I’m in the USA

  • Hashim Madani says:

I love this store and met Vijay there last Thanksgiving weekend. He’s outstanding and gave me all the time I needed to sample and experience a seemingly endless number of fragrances. Friendly, kind, knowledgeable, and very accommodating. Thank you, Vijay. Scent Bar NYC is a must-visit destination for fragrance lovers. VA, USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

The whole experience described was surprising–it was hard for me to conceive of how such a small store that requires users to remove masks could be open. I can only imagine how tough it is to own a small niche shop now! Sounds like they’ve made it as safe an experience as possible. I was also interested to hear the gender based trends. Men coming in with a researched list also seems to jive with the gendered discussion board norms on basenotes, where much of the fanaticism and collection obsession is more confined to “male fragrance discussion” (of course gender is a construct and the boards are unisex in nature, but the trends are still there). Thanks for the draw! Especially the Goldfield and Banks mini is an exciting prospect. I’m in the US.

  • I always enjoy the photos because where I live I never see in person such a wonderful place. Great draw to win I must say. US

  • Happy to see places are re opening. I did visit a local shop once and they seem to have the same protocol. Not as fun when you can’t touch the bottles , but better than staying home. I was interested in the difference between their male and female shoppers. I like that they add a sample if it’s a gift, Diptyque does that as well which is great for their exclusive line that is hard to sample. I’ve ordered the Mariage Freres tea from Luckyscent, not surprised to see it’s on the top seller list. It is phenomenal. I’d love to win! Best wishes to Luckyscent/Scent Bar for their success through this pandemic. USA.

  • It was nice to read that we can still enjoy the Scent Bar experience despite the latest world events. I was planning on visiting NYC and the store back in May, which sadly didn’t happen, so this gives me some hope. I like how much attention they pay to safety while focusing on customers. I am in in the DFW area.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I enjoyed about Hernando’s visit is that he was thorough in his descriptiveness concerning the upgrades made by Scentbar, and spoke about the personableness that is still able to be kept. Also appreciated that he let us know that the store is practicing “safe scents”;D

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • I have never been to the Scentbar in NYC, but I have been to the LA Scentbar. They are so professional and it’s exciting that they are opening. It’s interesting reading about how to do scent smelling with our new problems. It excited me to hear how great they are doing this and Lucky for Hernando to be there. I was also surprised to hear that 70% that shop are men. Thank you for the giveaway. USA

  • I’m new to scent bar shopping experience so it was helpful to learn how they have augmented the safety protocols and buying experience. Interesting to learn about different behaviors and how male and females shop differently “Male 70%, female 30%. It’s been Vijay’s experience that they shop differently” I’m a female and tend to do a thorough research before a purchase which contradicts the finding. Again, I could be in minority. Based in the US.

  • Interesting to read Hernando’s description of his visit to Scent Bar NYC. Similar to our recent visit to a store to buy eyeglasses, Scent Bar NYC has store policies of what to touch, physical distancing, etc., etc. – all well and good, but in places where breathing, smelling perfumes is concerned, or looking at oneself with different glasses before committing to one, the pain of repeatedly taking off mask, putting on mask, stepping back, stepping forward, all this seems too regimented, and I’d just avoid these stores. Best is to get samples online and try without sales pressure and the rigid rules to just smell a perfume. Wonder if the stress of just going to such a store will change the perception of what one smells!! Thanks for the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • This was really insightful and takes a lot of the fear factor out of what the new norm for fragrance shopping will be. When I heard about the re opening it was originally a no for me and I felt that the blind buying would just continue <> until life can get back to what it was. But now in hearing about how this process is going, it sounds pretty safe and reasonable. Next time I am in that area I might just think about trying for myself! Thanks for the very in depth description about how this goes it really was helpful.

  • I’ve been DYING to visit, but I can’t bring myself to ride on the LIRR and subways just yet. So frustrating to know that this Mecca is right in NYC. I will get there. :::shakes fist at the sky::: Their safety protocol sounds A+. NYC needed Scent Bar. I live on Long Island, NY.

  • I like that they organize the scents by family and customize the exploration to your style and what you are looking for. Glad that they are able to reopen carefully. And would love the sample sets if I win. In WA state.

  • I love hearing about Scent Bar’s evolution and transformation as we attempt to reach a new normal in society. It makes me want to visit my local perfume shop and hopefully one day travel to NY and visit Scent Bar in person . I also love to hear about what is the most popular products in these stores that carry more indie and niche fragrances. I have yet to try some of the brands in that top ten list, and now I’m gonna do some further research and see what these companies have to offer. I live in the USA.

  • I found it interesting that 70% of traffic are men! Very cool write up! Thanks for the opportunity. USA

  • I love the way that they have made it safe again to shop for fragrances. I haven’t been able to go fragrance shopping anywhere but online recently because of the virus and I really appreciate the precautions they are taking to make that something I can do again. Thank you for the opportunity to enter this draw.

  • What I enjoyed most was that Hernando was able to go to Scent Bar NYC in person. Clearly Scent Bar has thought of everything in order to be as safe as possible, and I love that the option to try perfumes before you purchase is back. What I was surprised by was the fragrance consultation and how they handle it. Having such a great personal experience really helps customers feel like they are important and makes the experience so much better. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • I’m really glad to hear of the precautions that are being taken to provide everybody with a safe and comparable olfactive experience. I hadn’t really thought about how much this aspect would change. The act of reaching for a blotter or a bottle is something that I take for granted.

I’m also glad to hear that you didn’t get shoo’d out and that you can take your time to conduct your business.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • Some nice Brands selling. I’d like to visit one day. Thanks for the giveaway. Hav etcgit the chance to try Escentric Molecule fragrances yet so this will give me a chance too. Ca

  • Thank you for describing your visit and experience! It definitely sounds like an appointment is the way to go. I would be comfortable visiting under the circumstances and was wondering if one would be able to sniff in store or not. Thankfully yes! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • What a lovely experience! I’m surprised and delighted that they are open and providing this service in a safe manner. And the results seem to have been spot on. U.S

  • foxesandfigs says:

I enjoyed how they have thought of the best possible way to enjoy the store while dealing with our current climate. I was surprised to learn that they only carry 50% of what’s online in their store. Oklahoma, USA

  • The details around COVID-19 precautions are very useful, as I have wondered how scent-sniffing in this new world would work. I love the LA store and am thrilled to hear that the new NYC location has reopened. Also the 70/30 male/female client split is interesting too…explains to me how I am so much more enthusiastic about trying out new scents than my wife LOL. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed learning about Hernando’s visit to Scent Bar NYC. COVID-19 has been hard for all businesses including the fragrance industry. It’s good to see that Scentbar has found a way to adapt and overcome. I liked general facts about male and female customers, their tendecies, and how Vijay works with customers who are unsure of what to purchase. There are so many amazing fragrance houses that are supplied by Scentbar NYC…what a beautiful establishment. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • It was fun having a vicarious in person store visit, if that’s possible. It does make me think of all the things I took for granted walking into a perfume store. I’m excited to see that there are adjustments being made to get back to more in person experiences. I live in the USA.

  • Oh, boy, that looks like an amazing visit you had! How I’d love to go there (but I live too far away). They carry 2 of my favorite houses – Xerjoff and Parfums de Marly. I’d be so thrilled to win this giveaway because I’ve wanted to try Escentric Molecules.
    I live in the USA.

  • I just love how they have personalized the experience. I can’t wait for my next trip to New York City for a visit. I love how they have categorized the scents in the shop, the displays look amazing, and just the experience. What a great idea about testing. I was not too surprised by the difference between men and women. I completely fall into the men category as I research and have my list ready. Though I love the occasional surprise. What an amazing store and such a great draw. Next trip “Here I Come”! Thank you in the USA.

  • vickalicious says:

Wow, I’m impressed by how much attention and detail have been devoted to keeping everything safe and sanitized! The fragrance consultation sounds like it would actually be quite fun. I was a little surprised to read that men make up the majority of their in-store customers and that women are more open to suggestions of fragrances compare to men. I hope to be able to visit the store at some point. Thanks for the generous giveaway!

  • Sounds like an amazing experience and I loved Vijay’s recommendation! On my next trip to NYC I will definitely stop by. Thanks for the generous opportunity and I live in the US!

  • I’m very happy that the Scent Bar is open during these troubled times. I visited in January, before the pandemic. I felt very comfortable browsing and sniffing all the bottles I had long been curious about. The staff is very accommodating. I pray that this brick and mortar shop will always be successful.

    I live in the USA.
