Nishane Istanbul Wūlóng Chá  (Jorge Lee) 2013- Perfume Review +Tea for a Late Summer’s Day

Painting attributed to Emperor Huizong of Song (r. 1100–1125 AD).

Oolong has become something of an obsession for me. These most fragrant of teas can boast an extraordinary range of aromas and flavors, ranging from plums, lychees and orchids to pine, cedar and roasted nuts. Indeed, Oolongs can be every bit as complex and layered as a classically composed perfume. So far down the Oolong rabbit hole have I fallen that my tea assortment is beginning to resemble the sprawling collection of atomizers, bottles and vintage miniatures that clutter my bedroom these days. So this self-appointed connoisseur was skeptical that any fragrance named for my beloved brew could live up to expectation. Happily, Nishane Istanbul’s Wulong Cha is every bit as aromatic and uplifting as a gaiwan of Chinese Tieguanyin.

The opening of Wūlóng Chá is a bright, gorgeous splash of fresh-sliced, tangy orange juice, which quickly marries with the aromatic bitterness of rind from litsea (a laurel that produces lemony oil). In a few minutes, bergamot kicks in its floral-tonic zing, paving the way for the unusual tea note that rises like steam to the surface.

Blooming Memories fashion editorial, Vogue Korea, April 2012

Most tea perfumes I have encountered have summoned the smoky astringency of Keemun or lifted the vegetal mintiness of Matcha. Wūlóng Chá goes a different route, paring down the bitterness of black tea in favour of fruit and dispensing with the grassiness of green. Its tea aroma is slightly plummy and woodsy. In the middle stages of Wūlóng Chá, green fig’s unique, lush perfume surfaces for just a moment and spins the tea around before stepping into the background with the citrus top notes.

As time passes, Wūlóng Chá's fruity notes frame the tea, which gradually becomes branchy, bosky, a touch medicinal. It is as if a tumble of vine suddenly wrapped them around an al fresco tea party. A gentle musk glides forward, softening the sharper aromas, and Wūlóng Chá  settles down into lovely late afternoon.

Wulong Cha is a perfect scent to turn to when you yearn for August dusk: the citrus has just the right balance between bite and sweet, the tea is embracing, the woods welcoming. So, as the sun’s warmth becomes detached and autumnal gusts shimmy the leaves from the trees, pull up a cozy chair, pour yourself a cuppa, spray on Wūlóng Chá and close your eyes. Summer lingers right here.

Notes: Bergamot, orange, litsea, lychee, mandarin, oolong tea, nutmeg, musk, fig.

Disclaimer: Wūlóng Chá provided by KVD NYC, the US distributor on behalf of Nishane – many thanks. My opinions are my own.

  • I love tea scents and this sounds wonderful, especially when I read Lauryn:s review about August dusk and a cosy chair ;-)) I love tea in every way, my favourite is Jasmin Green tea

Thanks for this draw, I live in Austria, Europe – no kangaroo but Alps.

    Best regards

  • The moment I saw the name Wulang Cha I knew this is a tea-based creation. I love tea-based ones, especially, original from Bvlgari becaus Bvlgari really mastered the art of tea-based fragrances. I am intrigued by this because this is a different kind of tea-based fragrance, focusing on fruity rather than fruity aspects which may make it suitable for summer, too. My favorite Nishane so far is Afrika Oliphant. I love smell of tea but I am unique in a sense that I don’t drink tea or coffee though everyone in my family loves tea as well as my extended family. I am in US.

  • Lauryn’s review is perfect for tea lovers. None of the tea perfumes I’ve tried in the past have lived up to my expectations. With all of the subtle nuances that Lauryn described, this is now a must try for me.

The other Nishane fragrance I have been dying to try is Sultan Vetiver. I’m a real vetiver junkie, and have read great things about it.

    I’m in the US.

  • An ‘al fresco tea party’? Count me in! This review makes Wulang Cha sound like just my kind of tea scent…not green tea grassy but black with sweet and sour citrus and lovely woods. I am a big tea lover and if this smells anything like my favorite sweet cup of black tea with a twist of citrus juice, I know I will love it. I haven’t tried anything from Nishane and would love for this to be my first. I am in the US. Thank you for the chance.

  • Wulong Cha sounds like something very much for me – oolong tea is what I really like. I love the taste, the warmth of tea, how complex it is. I am drinking some oolong right now, with hazelnut milk… really good!

    Haven’t tried any Nishane perfumes.
Thank you for the draw! I live in Europe

  • I hadn’t considered Wulong Cha as a late summer scent, but I can see it now as perfect for the season. A full bottle has been on my wishlist since I first sampled it. I love tea and tea fragrances but the green tea scents usually give me a headache. This one is greenish and wearable and my sample is about empty.
It is my favorite Nishane but I haven’t tried them all. I’m in the US.

  • To be absolutely honest, I’ve never really found one TEA scent that’s perfectly catching the essence of real ea, specially referring to my half Chinese background, and all my best Oolong memories, sadly not even as a heavy Darjeeling drinker and associated experiences. Earl grey, well, emmm, meh. Pure tea with all the delicate and due subtlety, guess a western perfumer could never truly, really get, which possibly is not gained by training, ‘traveling’ or just drinking the tea!
I’ve heard of laudable reviews constantly about this Oolong creation by Nashine, highly looking forward to this one, and high hopes of getting amazed by a really beautiful tea scent!
Based in Texas, U.S, let me win for one time oh please!

  • Great review, writer had me at name of fragrance ,i have a few designer based teas but nothing like this,
my fav nishane so far is fan your flames.
I am not a huge tea lover but i enjoy a tea now and then but in fragrances i love it when done right .
    i live in u.s.

    thnx 4 giveaway

  • I’m in Gucci pour Homme II today, a tea scent! A bit boring though, so I am curious on this one! I am not a tea geek as much as a fraghead, anyway Oolong is my favourite tea too, well fermented please, I don’t like green tea or similar style. Please let me win, I live in Switzerland.

  • A tea scent from nishane house, now this is the jackpot 🙂 i love tea based fragrances and would love to try this one. Great draw, i am from EU, thanks

  • BostonScentGuy says:

A tumble of vine around an all fresco tea garde party….very creative wording! Love the sense that this is a great transitional fragrance too! I’ve only sampled Nishane briefly, but loved the animalic one that evokes the savannah in the first collection. Also a big tea lover here, both in scents and to drink! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US!

  • “Wulong Cha is a perfect scent to turn to when you yearn for August dusk: the citrus has just the right balance between bite and sweet…”.
I have not tried a Nishane scent and very much a tea lover. US

  • I love the fun tea artwork. Great description Lauren!! I like that is goes plummy and woody. Seems like a nice change. I only own one tea based fragrance. I have never tried anything from this line, I didn’t realize this line is so new and from Istanbul. I am more of a coffee drinker, but I recently discovered the Mariage Freres brand and I occasionally have a cup. Thanks for the chance. I live in the US.

  • The first time I heard of Nishane house was trought Mr Sebastian Jara’s video at Esxence 2017, this march, when he interview Mr Murat Katran who presented Karagoz, Hacivat, and Zenne perfumes.
I never tried a scent from this house, but Wūlóng Chá seems a happy one. The combination of bitter, green, medicinal, yet fruity and woody notes appeals so much to me. I am intrigued to smell it.
    I live in the E.U.
    Thank you.

  • Thank you for this giveaway. Interesting fragrance
Still haven’t tried anything from the House of Nishane
Would like to try this. I believe the only tea fragrance I’ve
Smelled was Gucci pour Homme ll

  • I have never had a chance to try any from Nishane perfume, but I very like the review. I would be very glad, if I could try this fragrance. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • This sounds delicious! I do not drink coffee, so with my love of scent, I have a large tea library from which to choose, and my favorite black tea does happen to be oolong. I have a fair collection of green tea fragrances, so one that goes the black tea route sounds intriguing, especially with the nutmeg and fruit notes. I have not tried any from this house yet, but Zenne is on my must-sample list. I live in the US.

  • Tea scents are some of my favorites, so this article caught my eye! Citrus, tea and woods are the perfect blend! And you summed it up perfectly- “as the sun’s warmth becomes detached and autumnal gusts shimmy the leaves from the trees, pull up a cozy chair, pour yourself a cuppa, spray on Wūlóng Chá and close your eyes. Summer lingers right here.” Thank you for one last lingering thought of summer. I am a tea lover, so as summer fades into autumn, I look forward to sampling more teas as well! I’m in the USA.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

I really enjoy the description of how the oolong tea scent unfolds in the description. I don’t have a favourite Nishane perfume, but have heard so many good things about the house that I would love to sample their offerings. I own one tea-based fragrance, L’Artisan Parfumeur Tea for Two, and enjoy wearing that from time to time. That’s more like a black tea, not an oolong. (San Jose, California, USA)

  • I like this review, thanks. It’s wonderful that this perfume is not typical tea perfume, but have more fruty and less green sides.
I have read so many nice review about Nishane. I’ve never tested full line, bisides Hacivat wich have some similarities with Creed Aventus, but for me inferior to Aventus in richness of nuanses and have some “washing powder”- like side.
I like dreanking tea and any sorts of tee))
    USA, DE

  • Thank you for this review. This one I guess is a winner for the summer. The combination of notes to me is new, especially for the base.
I would like to try it if I have a chance.
Thanks to Cafleurebon and Nishane Istanbul for the draw.
    I live in the USA.

  • Ooh, I love tea fragrances!! This sounds so pretty! I don’t own any Nishane but have a few on my wishlist from other reviews I’ve read.

    I live in the U.S.

  • I cannot ever find a tea fragrance I like so I am intrigued by this one. I first learned about nishane here and bought samples from twisted lily my favorite was Fan your flames and Hacivet.
Please enter me as I would love this for sure

  • Tea as a note always seemed all right but lacked the “wow” factor for me. That said, I do think Nishane’s Wulong Cha is a particularly excellent example of the genre and the best Nishane perfume I’ve tried so far.

Lauren hit the nail on the head when she delves into the heart of a basic tea fragrance to find “green fig’s unique, lush perfume surfaces for just a moment and spins the tea around before stepping into the background with the citrus top”. That gree fig + citrus combo could be why I like this one so much.

    Thanks for the generous drawing.

  • Oolong is my absolutely favorite tea and this pairing with the orange juice and fig notes sounds fantastic. A wonderful explanation of the notes and their interaction. Thanks for the draw. I am so hoping to win. I live in the USA

  • Oh that “slightly plummy and woodsy” tea aroma in Lauryn’s description… what a great description; I can smell it now!

I wanted to know more about Nishane, so I recently ordered some samples. Suede and Safron is an outstanding leather.

Mostly a coffee drinker, but enjoy a good cup of hot tea occasionally.

Thanks so much for the drawing. I am in the U.S.

  • This seems perfect for the current weather we have. Nice and cool evening but also sunny. The description makes me think that it will be a perfect blend between summery citrus and autumn woods.

I have tried spice bazaar and loved it.

In Washington and we are having the perfect weather for this perfume 😉

  • I liked how Wulong Cha is a reminescence of the warm summer days to Lauryn and also as a fan of tea as a drink testing some tea-based fragrances always seems like a great idea! My favourite is Munegu and the only one I have tested from this house.

    I live in EU. Thanks!

  • I live in the US and Wūlóng Chá’s appeal for me is rooted in Lauryn’s description of Wūlóng Chál as a fig, tea and woods blend. I have not tried any of Nishane’s perfume line so I do not have a favorite but I am a tea lover who loves a decent Earl Grey and a good black tea and rose petal blend

  • I like to drink tea and I like tea based fragrances. The description is nice and it seems to be a cozy perfume, one I’d like to sample. Thanks for the draw, I live in EU.

  • I never had the opportunity to try a Nishane perfume before, but I like oolong tea. Liked this passage “Wūlóng Chá goes a different route, paring down the bitterness of black tea in favour of fruit and dispensing with the grassiness of green. Its tea aroma is slightly plummy and woodsy.” I live in EU. Thank you for the draw.

  • I like tea. I like coffee more, but sometimes I just crave tea!
During the warmer months I usually drink Sencha or White Tea, with ice (or at least cold). When autumn comes, I go to Earl Grey and other blck tea blends.

What I liked in the description is the feeling of summer in a autumn’s tea of this fragrance. That sounds really interesting! I’d love to be able to give it a try, especially since it’s still summer-ish here in Romania (EU), and I think the fragrance would go well with the beggining of fall.

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  • First, I am obsessed with the top painting. Its harvest colors, its Grandma Moses rendition of Chinese figures, the whole scene….Love it! This set my mood to read the article and Lauren makes oolong tea sound very complex and interesting. I am sitting drinking tea at my computer right now, but I confess I’ve never tried this variety. I am also totally uninformed about Nishane. I’ve wanted to sample but the sheer depth of their offerings has me hesitate. Thank you for the review. Maybe I’ll start with this one. USA

  • I am always curious as to how perfumers interpret tea in their creations. This sounds like an original creation, fruity notes merging into woody notes. I usually like astringent tea fragrances, but this sounds lovely.
I haven’t tried anything from this line, but I have heard good things about Afrika-Olifant.
I love tea, everything from malty Scottish breakfast teas to vegetal sencha.
    I live in the USA.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Fascinating review! I am not into tea / chai based fragrances although I have some tea based fragrances and hardly wearing it, but I love drinking tea. At the moment I am enjoying wearing six fragrances (Afrika Olifant, Hundred Silent Ways, Patchuli Kozha, Munegu, Boszporusz and Fan Your Flames from the house of Nishane. Nishane creations are amazing & I am very much impressed.

  • The notes set looks very interesting (various fruits with tea and some green notes) and if it’s true what was said about quality of Nishane perfumes it can be the tea no. 1. I haven’t try any Nishane perfumes yet, my favourite tea scents are Gucci PH2 and Bvlgari pour homme. I live in UE.
