New Fragrance Review: Imaginary Authors Slow Explosions  (Josh Meyer) + Where There’s Smoke There’s Saffron Draw

Slow Explosions! What a fabulous name for a fragrance. The title of the latest offering from Josh Meyer at Imaginary Authors manages, in two words, to convey a myriad of volatile emotions, sensations and scenarios while perfectly describing the nature and the poetry of the fragrance itself.  As usual, I don’t consult listed notes before trying a perfume for the first time.  In the case of Slow Explosions, when I finally did check, I was surprised to learn that smoke was not mentioned.  Josh Meyer has done wonders with what I imagine to be smokiness in his Memoirs of a Trespasser and A City on Fire Perhaps my first impression of his latest fragrance was colored by the name Slow Explosions, as well as by my personal expectations of the line. I immediately detected a burn, a suggestion of exploding fireworks and the scent of sparks and sparklers.  The power of words over my nose can be very disconcerting. I sometimes wonder if I am really smelling the fragrance or simply processing the name.

That being said, the smoke cleared quickly and was replaced by fresh green apple tinged with the bitter edge of saffron – that first phase of saffron that smells a bit like iodine or some kind of mineral. This initial burst stayed close to the skin and then, surprisingly, moved outward and became more intense, warming into buttery, fruity leather with a rosy saffron heart and hints of benzoin and musk, reminiscent of middle-eastern saffron centric mukhallats (mixtures).

For at least three hours, Slow Explosions seemed to swell, dilate and diffuse (exploding slowly!) before retreating and winding down to a memory of orchards and musk. When I first tested Slow Explosions the fragrance seemed rather weak and so I generously reapplied.  After fifteen minutes or so I was leaving a scent trail of about five feet in all directions and received several comments on my beautiful perfume.  Perhaps it is a good idea to apply this fragrance discretely and to relax knowing that the explosions will come!

As I understand, Slow Explosions is a development of another saffron based fragrance – a limited edition from Imaginary Authors entitled An Air of Despair. Also, in a recent video interview at Tigerlily Perfumery, by our own Contributor Sebastian Jara of Looking Feeling Smelling Good, Josh Meyer explained that the apple note in Slow Explosions was a by-product created from the combination of the saffron CO2 and other ingredients.  The perceived scent of apples, not unlike my imagined smell of smoke, seems similar to the psychoacoustic effect described years ago by my mbira teacher Dumisani Maraire as “the obvious but not present”.  By this he meant a sound that is obvious to the ear but is never actually played (or is present) on the instrument.

Notes: Saffron, Rose Absolute, Leather, Apple, Benzoin, Cashmeran, Arpora Night Market

Editor’s Note: Former Managing Editor Tama Blough  “discovered Josh Meyer” in 2011 when a friend sent her samples from the 1st  LA Fragrance Salon. To the best of my knowledge we were the first to review his perfumes. I particularly like the photography by Tyler Shields -MC

  • All the review of this have been great – I can hardly wait to smell it & it’s hard for me not to break my “no blind buy” rule! I adored A City on Fire and love rose & saffron, so. . .

I really enjoyed the review and learning about the “psychoacoustic effect” and thinking about olfactory illusions (my words).

Thanks for the giveaway and congrats to Josh for another great release!
    In the US

  • I love that GAIL doesn’t read notes before testing and the combo of saffron and apple
I think I like memoirs of a trespasser is the best of all Josh Meyer perfumes but slow explosion could be my favorite
Also I remember Tama reviews may she RIP
the artwork by Tyler Shields is awesome

  • Slow Explosions is my favorite fragrance by Imaginary Authors. It deserves all the praise it is receiving!

I love how Gail addresses the tricks that names can have on us, along with other factors – like colors – and how it affects the way we perceive a fragrance. There are so many mind tricks involved when it comes to fragrance, one would have to assume that no two people will ever smell a fragrance exactly the same way. Which explains the never ending debates on what a fragrance smells like!

Thanks to Cafleurebon and Josh Meyet for the giveaway. Good luck to everyone!

  • I am intrigued by it because Gail’s review confirms my impression of the fragrance I have developed from other reviews of the fragrance. It is centered on the saffron note which I became a fan of after experiencing it in the L’Artisan’s Saffran. It seems to be a variation on An Air of Despair, thus, a good substitute because An Air of Despair has been discontinued. Gail also mentions it has smokiness like Memoirs of a Trespasser which is my favorite from the line.

Thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US.

Very revealing review of a fragrance with a very unique profile with the saffron, leather and apple. I particularly like the surprise sillage the author experienced. I’m assuming this also means the longevity will be surprising as well. Thanks for the review.

  • This one went straight to the top of my ‘to-test’ list – I love saffron for its ability ti make fragrances glow (or, as Gail said, to ‘swell, dilate and diffuse’). It was very intersting to learn that the apple note is actually an olfactory illusion – just further proof that perfumers really do work magic!

My favorite Imaginary Authors scent is Memoirs of a Trespasser (but I think I’d also love Yesterday Haze – another one on the list!)

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

Love the saffron, leather and apple combo on this. Initially reminded of Byredo’s Black Saffron on the opening but goes separate ways few minutes after that comes out to its own unique indentity. Have a sample of this that is almost out so winning a full bottle will be awesome!

Thanks for well elaborated review. The name is also fantastic. Photos posted are awesome. Sebastian Jara also recommend me to buy Slow Explosion. I am curious for this gem. The notes are appealing to me. The apple note creation from the combination of the saffron, CO2 and other ingredients is unique.
I adore The Cobra and The Canary from the house of Imaginary Authors.
Thanks to generosity of Ann Onusko of Indigo Perfumery, Cafleurebon and Josh Meyer & wonderful giveaway.

  • Good review. I think the saffron in Slow Explosions is used better than in the other fragrance Gail mentions(Air of Despair).

My favorite IA fragrance depends on my mood and the season..but I really like Every Storm a Serenade:) I hope I win and can add this new “novel’ to my collection:) Thanks for the great giveaway!

  • I like how this review conveyed the volatile nature of this fragrance. I like when reviewers are surprised by scent combinations. I am very intrigued by the apple and smoke combination. This whole line intrigues me. I haven’t tried any of the fragrances, but just the names make me want to blind-buy. Memoirs of a Trespasser and Cape Heartache especially sound so evocative.

  • I like the description of the “slow explosion” of scent described by Gail. I don’t thnk I have a real saffron perfume in my collection. My favorite IA perfume is Yesterday’s Haze, a beautiful fig. USA. Thankn you Indigo Perfumery for the prize!

  • Zain Meghani says:

What a first impression on me when I first heard the name. Slow explosions that leaves the whole country and vicinity in a panicking and a surprising situation yet not very shocking because the explosions smelled really great. Great creation great name given. Hope to get a fortune cookie 🙂

  • I loved Gail’s review of Slow Explosions and really like it when I learn new concepts (in this case, the “psychoacoustic effect). I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing an Imaginary Authors perfume.
