NEW FRAGRANCE REVIEW: Bond No. 9 “I Love NY for Earth Day” and “I Love NY for Mothers” + Sample Set Draw

Last year,  niche house Bond No. 9 released three fragrances that captured the energy, freedom and love for New York City (for Him, for Her and For All) to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11. This year they are releasing four new scents in the line: Earth Day (available now), for Mothers (available May 1st), for Fathers (available June 1st) and for Marriage Equality (available July 1st). It is rumored this line will eventually number fifteen scents.

One of the things I love about Bond No. 9  is that they are attempting to capture every part and essence of New York City in perfume. No mean feat! In a city like New York you have a never ending diversity, so to with their perfumes. The two most recent releases center on NYC’s love of green along with its environmental “smarts” and its celebration of mothers and motherhood.

I Love New York for Earth Day is an amazingly green floral perfume. This opens slightly sweet with juicy tangerines and subtle orange flower water balanced with a rather dry, but full, orchid note. Described by Bond as “a fresh, green metro-sophisticated eau de parfum”, I agree wholeheartedly. Visions of sunlight striking dewy grass, fresh new leaves and gently opening flowers spring to mind.  When it begins to open more fully tuberose appears. Not the full powdery somewhat naughty tuberose in full bloom that calls moths to pollenate it at night, but a gorgeous green tuberose that is just beginning to open and blossom and has an almost elegant innocence about it. Tuberose is joined by sheer muguet (lily-of-the-valley) and a cool orris (iris root) as this perfume braids together three of the most verdant floral notes in perfumery. Some may find it a bit feminine. I find it a fitting olfactory homage to our “Mother”, the Earth.

This perfume has amazing projection after its initial application (one spritz applied to the back of my hand spread vaporously throughout my kitchen, and was keenly noticed by those in the next room). After a while that quiets somewhat, but continues to softly enchant and allure without being too arrogant or “haughty”. The finish of a rather clean and clear musk along with an airy moss, alongside touches of amber and sandalwood creates a firm enough anchor for the scent, yet it never overpowers the beauty of the heart notes but sustains them, rather than eclipsing them. If you enjoy green scents resplendent with fresh floral notes, I would definitely recommend this. This perfume veers more towards the feminine for most of its development, yet ends a bit more unisex. It has excellent sillage and very good longevity.

I Love New York for Mothers is something I would gladly give my mother for Mother’s Day. It begins bright and lively, focusing on the sweet tangerines and a delicate yet firm freesia. Freesia is one of those notes I used to abhor. It always reminded me of hand crème or great grandma’s floral perfumed talcum powder. Now, as I grow older, I appreciate its soft and silky aroma and find it a fitting inclusion to this perfume that celebrates mothers. Like the proud smile from your Mom that brought joy to your heart, as a child, when you presented her with milky dandelions and back yard violets, this perfume is simple but lovely. Creamy jasmine and soft lilac blooms hint at her femininity, her soft kisses and loving embrace. Without going overboard, Bond has captured the ideal of “mom” in a fragrance.

This scent actually reminds me of an obscure Jethro Tull song called “For a Thousand Mothers”, a simple but profound thing that pays tribute to all the little things our moms do for us. This is not the most complex fragrance, but it does not need to be. Some will call it linear, as it does not change all that much. From its gentle opening to its soft and floral heart to the loving caress of warm amber, soft musk and sandalwood, with its reassuring strength, in the dry down-this perfume is subtle, comfy and surrounds you …just like a hug shared with your mother. Sometimes nothing else says “thank you” like a small bouquet of simple unassuming flowers. Bond has created something that is demure, yet very pretty, to say “Thanks, Mom” for all the little things you’ve done for us. Sillage: gentle, but good. Longevity: above average.

Earth Day is April 22nd. Walk barefoot through the grass, hug a tree, stop and smell the flowers…roll down a grassy hill like you used to when you were little. Show the Earth how much you appreciate it!!

I try to be green to collect the garbage selectively and make compost from the yard wastes.
Unfortunately I still did not know any fragrance of the Bond No. 9 line, but I really like to try them! 🙂
    Thank you for the draw.

  • Wow, didn’t know they were different compositions, just thought it was the same fragrance just in a variety of different coloured bottles. I am glad to discover that they aren’t, thanks John!
My favourite Bond No.9 fragrance is West Side.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Lovely review John! BondNo.9 always tries to capture every possible aspect of New York. My favorite is Chinatown, trully amazing unfortunately I have only a sample of it!! Trying to be “green” is difficult but apart from the standard (switching lights off, turing off appliances, water consumption, recycling) I am trying to cut back on my car use as I use it a lot!!

  • I have some samples of Bond No. 9 fragrances on their way to me but of the scents I’ve looked into I think New Haarlem will be my favorite. These ones sound really interesting, though and Bond really amazes me with their wealth of new ideas.

  • I tend to gravitate between New Haarlem and Chinatown. I will say New Haarlem is my current favorite as it is slightly more easy to wear for me. (Chinatown please don’t be offended)

  • High Line is my fav for the spring. Clean, Fresh and last all day. Would love to sample these two new I Love NY. They both sound wonderfull.

  • I like to be green everyday. Saving water, electricity, recycling. Not wasting food. Etc. Right now my fav is Central Park West.

    Thank you!

  • I try to recycle everything, use water and electricity conservatively, and I’m vegetarian, which helps the planet. I’d love to try I Love NY for Earth Day! Thanks for the draw.

  • I try to recycle & repurpose everything I can. I will be planting flowers for Earth Day. I’d love to try these Bond No. 9’s. Thanks for the draw.

  • I do a lot to try to be green – but less bottled water and take my Klean Kanteen everywhere, buy organic, buy pastured and sustainably raised meats and poultry, use nontoxic cleaners, my hubby and I have one car, walk to work when I can, and be frugal and reuse things where I can (like cloth shopping bags for groceries, etc.).

Thanks so much for the draw, they both sound wonderful!

  • Chinatown, always! And the candle is fantastic, too.

I have switched to all green cleaning products.

  • I haven’t tried very many of the Bonds, but I’m really enjoying my sample of I Love NY For All.

  • Favorite Bond No.9 fragrance is a tie between Chinatown and New Haarlem. Thanks for the contest!.

  • Unfortunately, I have not tried any Bond, but I would love to. New Haarlem is on top of my list. Thanks for the draw.

  • I try to be green every day! April 22nd is not different.

I love Silver Factory and Chinatown, but also like a few others enough to want to sniff them more

The green one sounds great – nice reviews, John!

  • Queen Cupcake says:

Recycling and being conservative with water and energy use in my house is something my husband and I have done for quite some time. We have composted for many years, and continue to improve the soil and garden output because of this. I think twice before purchasing makeup and toiletries which are packaged in non-recyclable materials; unfortunately, there are relatively few of those. If I want to get rid of clothing, books, furniture, etc., I always consider whether these can be given away.

My favorite Bond No.9 (so far) is New Haarlem.

  • Queen Cupcake says:

Um…I meant relatively few makeups and toiletries are packaged in recyclable materials. Sheesh.

  • I’ll continue my policy of not driving a car in a city with ample public transportation. I’ll be walking a lot, in fact, with the warmer weather on its way…

My favorite Bond no 9 is Harrods Rose. But I love their super-green Central Park as well.

  • Chinatown is my favorite Bond No. 9.

We do recycle in my apartment building; I donate reuseable items to Good Will and the Vietnam Veterans group. I’ve also discovered some very nice earth-friendly cleaning products.

  • I will be spending my earth day out on the gorgeous foothills of the Rockies near Boulder, CO

I have yet to discover my favorite bond fragrance. Sadly there aren’t many available near me

  • I recycle everyching I can: cans, bottles, plastics, boxes, batteries, oil…

My favorite Bond No.9 is Hamptons.

    Thanks!

  • My favorite Bond thus far is Fire Island. I will try to be green on Earth Day by spending the day outside rather than indoors and picking up litter on the beach. thanks for the draw!

  • We are green because we try not to pack lunches with stuff that needs to end up in a land fill! My fav bond is Silver Factory…awesome!

  • I recycle as much as I can, love gardening, and either use green household products or make my own for cleaning. I like the Madison Square Park fragrance. Out of these two I would love to try Earth Day.

  • Whenever I use resources – water, petrol for driving, electricity, etc., I try to use just a bit less than I think I can. My favorite Bond is Silver Factory.
I would love to try Earth Day from Bond!

  • My family tries to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever we can.
It’s hard to choose which Bond is my favorite. My top 2 are Highline and Madison Square Park. I love the story of I Love New York for Mothers and hope that it is my new favorite.
