New Fragrance: Etat Libre D’Orange HERMANN A MES COTES ME PARAISSAIT UNE OMBRE (Quentin Bisch)

Hermann à mes côtés me paraissait une ombre etat libre dorange

“Who goes beside you into the forest on the darkest night?  In Victor Hugo’s poem, "What Two Horsemen Were Thinking In The Forest/  À QUOI SONGEAIENT LES DEUX CAVALIERS DANS LA FORÊT,  the narrator writes" by my side, Hermann seemed to me like a shadow.”

Creative director Etienne de Swardt of Etat Libre D’Orange is known for his unusual briefs which often provoke or are based in mythology.  His new fragrance HERMANN A MES COTES ME PARAISSAIT UNE OMBRE composed by Quentin Bisch of Givaudan (whose first perfume was Le Fin du Monde for Etat Libre D’Orange in 2013) is inspired by a little known poem in Victor Hugo’s Contemplations. This particular poem speaks of the dead, of darkness, of graves, of regrets, and misfortune but also of continuity and peace.  It is a fragrance for “the Alternative Self”

In the press release the entire poem is included but it is the final line that speaks to me personally today.

Do not dismay them through bitter irony. As in a dream, they hear our voices.”

  • This went immediately on my Must Try list. Does it seem just a little darker and moodier than the average ELdO release, or am I being swayed by the poem and ad copy

  • Must agree with Tammy on my must try list too…I love many of the Etat creations and this sounds intriguing 🙂

  • Intriguing notes described. ELD’O is one of my favorite houses… they still take risks.

Calypsone is an aromachemical smelling diffusively aquatic/ozonic; geosmine is a new aromachemical smelling of dirt/earth. Pepperwood is another name for California bay laurel, ie., the spicy bay leaf. I don’t know what petalia is, do you? Sounds like a floral essence of some kind.

The head of blackcurrent, galbanum and black pepper promises us that the opening head will be very sharp, pungent and green indeed.

So it sounds as though this scent is a sharp aromatic green floral with a richly spicy/earthy base. mmm… can’t wait to try.
