ÇaFleureBon Creative Directors In Perfumery: Jean-Philippe Clermont of Atelier Des Ors + La Vie En D’Or Draw

Jean Phillipe Clermont Creative Director of Atelier des Ors

I will start by telling you something of my background. I grew up in the French countryside in Brittany and enjoyed a quiet, happy and simple childhood. Nature has always been part of my spare time and still today there is nothing else I like more than a stroll on Brittany’s shores when storms are throwing massive swells onto the coastline. The sky is low and merges with the grey sea at some stage. It is truly inspiring.

I love my ancestor’s ground where stories of druids, Breton goblins and foggy weather suggest the existence of another world filled with mystery and fantasy. I always feel at home when I am going back there. My love for tradition and heritage comes certainly from there. I have always been interested in creativity and commerce. When I was young these passions first came together when I sold seashell necklaces to my parents’ friends and even though the idea didn’t really take off I was already interested in making and selling beautiful creations. I also liked to draw and grew up with my mother’s paintings and being around her art and creativity has always made me want to seek the aesthetically pleasing. My family also had a business that specialised in the retail of fine table glass and china. I spent many hours with my grandparents listening to all of the stories behind the creations, the manufacturing process, design and also the history of these pieces of art. I believe this time spent with my grandparents encouraged and inspired me to think about the importance of craftsmanship behind the objects.

There are some early memories of specific smells from this time that I can recall. My grandmother made pear jam from their harvest at their countryside house. The pear trees were organic and very old. The “Gateau Petit Duc”, home made caramel and  “œufs au lait”  deserts were always cooking and the smell filled her home each time I visited her for holidays.

When I was 17 my life changed as my parents moved to the French West Indies and it was quite a shock for me, however I think it was also good too, as I realised I could be a global citizen in the world. I graduated from an International Business school and travelled for some time to explore the world. I was drawn to Asia and the Middle East. I also lived in Singapore and Beirut where I really fell in love with the culture in the Middle East, the literature, music, poetry, food and the lifestyle. In the French West Indies at the open market in Fort de France the smell of spices, Bois d’Inde for marinated fish, poudre de Colombo (curry variant made of a mix of spices), cinnamon, coconut, green citrus, guava, mango, piment oiseau were all around. I was a fan of the local gastronomy too. Boudin noir with piment oiseau, boudin blanc with lambi (sea shelf) and blanc manger coco desert.

In Lebanon (where I lived for two years) there were more delicious aromas with oriental pastries and necklaces of jasmine flowers sold in the street by market sellers. The food was really incredible – zaatar (mix of spices used in Oriental Cuisine) manakishe and all the oriental mezze but also the Turkish cuisine with its variety of Ottoman dishes and fish from the Bosphorus. I still think of a sumptuous lamb ragout with quinces. I am even a greater fan of the oriental cuisine and the smell of the shisha.Back in Paris, I worked with fine handmade cigars and it was here that I really began to be intrigued by the world of scent. The smell of the cigars with their scented smoke involved a search for the perfect blend of materials that delivered an incredible odour. My work took me to the Middle East and then I set up my home in Dubai where I have lived until recently. I am now back in France living in the sunny South.

atelier-des-ors

I developed Atelier Des Ors to bring my passion for art, refined craftsmanship and beauty together. My dream is to create perfumes that fuse together these elements to give the wearer something they will be proud to wear, will take pleasure in and find some inspiration at any given moment. When I first started Atelier Des Ors I didn’t really look too hard at what others were doing. I had a vision of what I wanted to create and I felt that there was a place for my dream.

One is called Iris Fauve that we showed at Pitti Fragranze in September and the other is Musc Immortel that will be an exclusive limited release at Harrods in London.

marie-salamagne

Marie Salamagne of Firmenich

I first met Marie Salamagne, the perfumer for the range through a friend. On our first meeting we talked about art, craft and perfume and it was clear that she was the right choice to create the perfumes for Atelier Des Ors. She talks about creating perfumes like paintings.

Olivia Gaches (Fragrance Development Manager) with Jean-Phillipe Clermont and Marie Salamagne Atelier des Orsaube

She visualises her creations where hues create contrasts and I feel she has been able to bring the vision to life. Marie and I worked for three years and I also collaborated with designers and craftsmen to make the dream a reality.

I wanted to bring the search for perfection to everything we do at Atelier Des Ors. The craftspeople involved in the making of the perfume, the boxes and the bottles are very important as they bring techniques they have learned over time and seek to improve them generation after generation.  We have also chosen to work with great raw materials at every stage and we try to find the right balance for the perfect solution. Through the limited editions I am very happy to be able to showcase the amazing work of our talented gold gilders. I have always been in touch with craftsmen for bespoke projects I had in my cigar activity. It might be exotic leather cigar cases or wood marquetry humidors. I like to explore new directions and will soon expand the fine materials we use for our limited edition to wood and leather.

Creative Director Jean-Phillipe Clermont

We pay special attention to every detail and work on each perfume as if it was a piece of art. Perfume in itself can also be considered as a “métiers d’art”. This is very important. I like to say that Atelier Des Ors is grounded in the French classicsm but we are reinterpreting our heritage with a modern twist.

The quest for beauty and a refined aesthetic are key for Atelier Des Ors and we do not like to compromise. The gold that we incorporate in our bottles symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times. Gold was important to many cultures as a symbol of divinity and the ever lasting. Like gold, perfume (per fumum) was associated with the search for the divine, as priests in many ancient religions burnt incense to communicate with God.

Future projects include a very specific one that I cherish which has been maturing in my mind for over a year now. Marie and I are going to explore the link between painting, music and perfume and the use of gold in art. I can’t wait to bring it alive!

  • Jean-Phillipe’s journey took him around the world! His attention to detail certainly shows in his gorgeous bottles and online store. My favorite part of his story is when he sold seashell necklaces. I also like his introduction into scent through his work with cigars.”The smell of the cigars with their scented smoke involved a search for the perfect blend of materials that delivered an incredible odour.” I would choose the Rose Ommeyade. I live in the US.

  • I love this kind of stories and I love them even more when they are so beautifully told: “I love my ancestor’s ground where stories of druids, Breton goblins and foggy weather suggest the existence of another world filled with mystery and fantasy. I always feel at home when I am going back there. My love for tradition and heritage comes certainly from there. I have always been interested in creativity and commerce. When I was young these passions first came together when I sold seashell necklaces to my parents’ friends and even though the idea didn’t really take off I was already interested in making and selling beautiful creations.”

My choice would be Cuir Sacre. Thanks for so generous draw! I live in Europe.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Thank you, Jean-Phillipe, for showing us your world! I can only imagine how it must feel to see these come to fruition after 3 years of labor. The level of craftsmanship this line shows is truly impressive. Your search for perfection is evident in this. Thanks again for letting us know more about your art. And for the generous draw. I’m in the USA, and if I were lucky enough to win would choose Iris Fauve.

  • My favourite quote about Jean-Phillipe’s approach: “The gold that we incorporate in our bottles symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times.” Beautiful!

My choice if I were to win is definitely Iris Fauve. I’ve liked your FB page and I am in the US 🙂 Thank you!

  • To go around the world experiencing cuisines, cultures, and their inherent scents is so what contributes to the fragrances of this house. I would love to win Lune Feline or L’Armes du Desert. I’ve tried both and swooned with joy. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA. I’m crossing my fingers, my toes, braidiing my hair, braiding my dogs hair, anything that would help.

  • Diana Devlin says:

I love the aspect of Marie Salamagne how she equates creating perfumes with creating paintings.

I would select Rose Ommeyade, as I love rose fragrances.

    I live in the U.S.

  • The design of the bottles and displays are incredibly beautiful, this is obviously important to Jean Phillipe. I was interested to read about his peripatetic background and the influence of the food in various cultures.
I would love to win Cuir Sacre and haved liked the FB post.
    I am in Australia

  • GrandmaGaga says:

‘I had a vision of what I wanted to create and I felt that there was a place for my dream’. I admire the focus that declaration shows which resulted in this line of perfume. Lune Feline is the one that really sounds appealing to me. I live in the US, thank you for the chance.

  • Eric Dunthorne says:

What moved me is the attention to detail, symbolism and meaning behind every facet in the process of creating a fragrance. I’d choose Iris Fauve because the way the fragrance develops throughout its life really speaks to me. I live in Colorado Springs CO USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

Jean-Phillipe has had quite an interesting childhood. It is apparent commerce has been a big part of his family. His childhood in Brittany allowed him to experience nature and later he has lived in different parts of the world including Asia and the Middle East. Including Gustav Klimt’s painting is good idea in this article due to Atelier des Ors focus on gold flakes. My choice for this draw is Iris Fauve. I am in the US.

  • concertslover says:

It’s very difficult to find a fragrance that one really connects with. This is why I enjoy your site and reading about these niche fragrances. Not only am I learning about the scents but also the story behind them. Often the history of some of these companies is amazing. I do like the triangulation of art, craftsmanship and beauty that were part of the passion and vision of these creations. I hope to get to try 1.
I’ll try Iris Fauve on your recommendation
    FROM USA

  • Very nice story, and review. I very like that Jean-Phillipe could journey so much different places on the world. My favorite section for the article is this: “The quest for beauty and a refined aesthetic are key for Atelier Des Ors and we do not like to compromise. The gold that we incorporate in our bottles symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times.” These perfume bottles with the gold, are look so amazing, so wonderful. I would be so glad If I could win one of these beauties. And my choice would be Rose Ommeyade. Thank you very much for the chance. I have already liked Facebook page CaFleureBon Creative Directors in Perfumery. I live in Europe.

  • It was unexpected to read that Jean-Phillipe worked with handmade cigars. I’d like to win the Iris Fauve, a lot. USA

  • I recognize a fellow world traveler in Jean-Phillipe. I loved reading his rememberances of places, and particularly food, such as this quote: “The food was really incredible – zaatar (mix of spices used in Oriental Cuisine) manakishe and all the oriental mezze but also the Turkish cuisine with its variety of Ottoman dishes and fish from the Bosphorus. I still think of a sumptuous lamb ragout with quinces. I am even a greater fan of the oriental cuisine and the smell of the shisha.” I believe this attention to variety and detail hones one’s palate for sensory pleasures. I also enjoyed hearing he spent time in Singapore, as I head there today. I have read so many good things about Iris Fauve that I have to choose it if I win. I will wait with anticipation for news of new releases. Thanks for an interesting interview. I liked all pages some time ago. USA.

  • I am impressed by the vividness of the Mr. Clermont childhood memories, memories of smells, sights, flavors … and their roles in the process of his formation as “entrepreneur of beauty”. I think the whole line is built on excellent premises and concept, with precious ingredients. The result is a high standard of brand’s image and its quality. My choice for the draw is Cuir Sacre.
I have liked the FB post.
    I live in Eu.

  • acquiredtaste says:

What moved me is his journey in different parts of the world and being inspired by the scents of local food. I am thrilled to learn that he has lived in Singapore, which is near my country, Malaysia! I would choose Iris Fauve.

  • Fascinated review! Mr. Clermont seems to be a man who really understands his stuff. My favorite quote is: “I developed Atelier Des Ors to bring my passion for art, refined craftsmanship and beauty together.”

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love how many perfumers are drawn to the natural world…it of course makes sense and helps me make sense of my natural inclination to both be in nature for spiritual reasons, and because of the aesthetics/beauty of the space…visually…and scent-wise! I certainly loved hearing about Jean-Phillipe’s delightful-sounding journey and experiences far and wide! I am a big fan of what I’ve smelled of this line, in particular Lune Feline. If I won, I would love to win Iris Fauve. I also liked the CFB Facebook page (my name is in the email attached to this account). I’m in ths US.

  • That was a really interesting read, thank you!
“The quest for beauty and a refined aesthetic are key for Atelier Des Ors and we do not like to compromise…. Like gold, perfume (per fumum) was associated with the search for the divine, as priests in many ancient religions burnt incense to communicate with God.” This is the best analogy I have read in a long time. Brilliant. Iris Fauve would be my choice.
    In the US.

  • I love the design of the bottles, the golden sparkles inside, and that so different types of art inspire Jean-Philippe so much.
I can only imagine how good these fragrances have to be, if they look so pretty and are so carefully designed! I am choosing Lune Feline because of the wonderful name, I love cats 🙂

I liked the Facebook page. Thank you for so generous draw!

  • These bottles look like a magic flasks of liquid golden treasure. My favorite quote from Jean-Philippe is also the one about gold: “The gold that we incorporate in our bottles symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times. Gold was important to many cultures as a symbol of divinity and the ever lasting. Like gold, perfume (per fumum) was associated with the search for the divine, as priests in many ancient religions burnt incense to communicate with God.” The whole line looks awesome. As a rose lover, I would love to win Rose Ommeyade if I am lucky. Thank you thank you! I live in Europe.

  • The words that touched my heart are: “I had a vision of what I wanted to create and I felt that there was a place for my dream”. It was like the answer to some questions I have about my life at the moment.
I’d choose Larmes du Desert but I am sure all fragrances are fantastic.
I liked the FB page. Thank you for the draw. EU.

  • The attention to detail is what struck me as well as Jean Phillipe travels from Brittany to Dubai. I especially like his scent memories of his grandmothers cooking
I live in the USA and Iris fauve would be my choice
I liked the page awhile back

  • Llonia Glynn says:

First let me say I adore good writing that brings the spirit of the narrative alive…Jean-Phillipe’s memories of l places redolent with smells and flavors explain so well the eclectic vision and scope of his work.
I love the literal and metaphoric presence of gold in these gorgeous perfumed. Alchemy indeed.
    My preference? … Lune Feline.
    I live in New Zealand.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the story sharing, photos & article. Jean-Phillipe’s journey from childhood to Middle East & Asia to Southern France is fascinating, with an aim & full of striking. The two statements are a complete dictionary of Jean Phillipe: 1) My dream is to create perfumes that fuse together these elements to give the wearer something they will be proud to wear, will take pleasure in and find some inspiration at any given moment. 2) I had a vision of what I wanted to create and I felt that there was a place for my dream.
Atelier Des Ors bottles are gorgeous and I haven’t try any of Atelier Des Ors fragrances. My choice is Lune Feline / Larmes du Desert. Already liked your Facebook Page CaFleurebon Creative Directors in Perfumery.
Thanks to Jean-Phillipe for the generosity & Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw.

  • I love the motto of the perfume house: “I developed Atelier Des Ors to bring my passion for art, refined craftsmanship and beauty together. My dream is to create perfumes that fuse together these elements to give the wearer something they will be proud to wear, will take pleasure in and find some inspiration at any given moment.” I am very curious about every single scent from Atelier des Ors, but my choice is Rose Omeyyade which I have tried and in which I am in love with. It’s wonderful! Thank you for so generous draw! I like FB page already. I am in the EU.

  • I’ve heard so much praise about Atelier des Ors and now I’m so excited about this draw. I didn’t have the opportunity to try any of the fragrances and I’d love to try all of them. The notes of Aube Rubis sound the most fascinating to me and this is what I would like to try as my first Atelier des Ors perfume. Thank you for the draw. Greetings from Norway!
    (I like the FB site)

  • Very interesting article. While I would love to try Atelier des Ors fragrances, I am a little afraid I would feel like a humble Cinderella in a ball dress that is too elegant for her.
But if I, by any chance, win the draw, I would choose Rose Ommeyade because I love roses.
Thank you for this really generous draw. You have my Fb like. I live in Europe.

  • I love listening to people telling smelling memories from all over the world, but what touched me was when Jean-Philippe was young and living in La Bretagne, with her grandparents, surrounded by craftmanship and dessert smells, I wonder if one of the perfumes of Atelier des or tries to recreate that memories, that pear jam.
If I win the draw I would chose the new Iris Fauve, I love the name and I was intrigued with the Liatris!
    I’m in Europe,
    thanks for the draw.

  • cinnamon tree says:

Golden Tears by Klimt are an awesome inspiration, but I have never thought that someone would be brilliant enough and close these golden tears in a bottle. Amazing idea!
i like what Mr. Clermont says about the quality of his perfumes – “The quest for beauty and a refined aesthetic are key for Atelier Des Ors and we do not like to compromise”.
I’d choose Larmes du Desert. I live in the EU, thanks for the draw!

I liked Creative Directors in Perfumery facebook page.

  • My favorite part of the story were fragrant memories of food, especially grandma’s pear jam and caramel dessert. Amazing how these simple things can inspire us and contribute to shaping our future. I also liked the part about perfumes being associated with the search for the divine,

My choice would be Cuir Sacre since I am much into leather scents recently. Thank you for your generosity, Jean Philippe! I live in Europe. (liked Facebook site)

I am glad Jean-Philippe decided to use his worldwide olfactory experiences to create so rich and sophisticated perfume line. I would like to win Rose Ommeyade. Thank you for so fascinating read. I live in EU and I like the Fb page.

  • Thank you very much for this opportunaty. I am a silent Reader from Germany since years. I liked this Interview a lot and Mr. Clermont’s life story as well as bis approach in Setting up a Perfume brand. A very Professional and profund approach considering so many aspects from art to aesthetics and of course the quality of the product itself. It is very impressive and considering the upbringing and life experiences of Mr. Clermont everything makes Perfect sense.
I am a total sucker for Iris perfumes and waiting in total anticipation for Iris Fauve. I would love to have this ultra beautiful botttle of Iris Fauve.

  • I love Marie’s thought of perfume as a painting, it is the one masterpiece that one can carry throughout the day and enjoy. The bottles are a beautiful thing to contain these masterpieces. My Mom had a fragrance with gold suspended in it which I liked to look at like a snow globe when I was young. I can’t wait to find out what has been maturing in Jean-Phillipe’s mind for a year. If I should be so fortunate to be chosen I would like the Lune Feline. Thanks so much for the draw. I live in the U.S.

  • “The gold that we incorporate in our bottles symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times.”

Sums up the choice of art and travel

if I win i choose Iris Fauve.
I’ve liked your FB page and I am in the EU!

I like the FB page and I would choose Lune Feline. I live in Poland, EU. Thanks!

  • Oh, I would love to win Iris Fauve. The notes sound absolutely mesmerizing and the bottle with gold particles is so beautiful! I have never tried any fragrance from Atelier des Ors and don’t really know what to expect, but if the gold “symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times”, I guess the perfumes must be fabulous. Thanks for the chance! I live in Europe.

PS. Liked the CFB Creative Directors page.

  • This is a pleasure to read. Such poetic writing! Jean Phillipe Clermont’s life is so inspiring. I am also a highly sensory person, so travel is the most exciting and fulfilling activity for me. I crave new sights, scents, and tastes like nothing else. I’d love to explore the middle east, in part because I love perfumes inspired by it. The attention to detail and craftsmanship really excite me about Atelier des Ors. I also really enjoyed reading about the creative partnership between Jean Phillips and Marie. Sums like the perfect match! I hope I’m able to try their line soon. I’d love to try Cuir Sacré. I love in Canada and have liked the Facebook page, thank you.

  • Interesting reading about an interesting life. I like how perfumers are able to remind all the smells from their childhood. Pears and caramel from grandmother kitchen, spices and fish from West French Indies and other places where JP lived. I would like to win Lune Feline. I am in EU. Thanks.

P.S. I have liked your page on FB

I loved hearing about Jean-Philippe’s childhood and how much he enjoyed traveling when he was older. What an amazing story! I also found it very interesting that he worked with handmade cigars. • I love: “I developed Atelier Des Ors to bring my passion for art, refined craftsmanship and beauty together. My dream is to create perfumes that fuse together these elements to give the wearer something they will be proud to wear”
Many times we wear something we like but how often do we wear something we are proud of? 🙂

Id love to try any but am really interested in Aube Rubis, Cuir Sacre and seeing how the rose works in Rose Omeyyade:) Im in the USA 🙂

I guess what I like most about Jean Phillipe is that he sees perfume as a spiritual experience, a scout in the unknown in search of perfection.
My perfect quote is : ”Like gold, perfume (per fumum) was associated with the search for the divine, as priests in many ancient religions burnt incense to communicate with God.”
My favourite one in the collection would be Lune Feline , and I live in Europe

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

I was so inspired by Jean-Phillipe journey with creativity. Sometimes you can just be called to create and you have to follow your instincts. I loved how his experiences with different cultures impacted his appreciation of scents and aromas.

  • What a wonderful childhood. Too bad all kids aren’t so fortunate. I hadn’t thought of pear jam in forever. I think I would have been sad to move away from that at age 17. My family moved me at age 13, and it was tough. I thought all this time the gold was just for looks. Loved the article.

  • I regret not having seen this articl before, it’s always interesting to learn about the sensory journey of a person. Now I can see how this is transmitted in his fragrances, the black collection has to my nose a middle eastern inspiration, while the blue collecion can be a souvenir from his childwood by the sea.

  • Jean-Phillipe has interesting life story, no wander that his perfumes are so amazing. I like that he appreciates the childhood memories of the smells of foods his grandmother was preparing. Certainly living in Asia also had big impact on his creativity.

  • It is very interesting how memories and activities from childhood and family customs can lead to lifelong creativity, how necklaces, sales, painting, beautiful glass in the home, conversations about art can manifest in the project of a new perfume brand. Interesting reading. Lubica (EU)
