Xerjoff La Capitale Review (Chris Maurice) 2018 + a jammy summer giveaway

Xerjoff La Capitale review

Xerjoff La Capitale by Olya Bar©

When summer is in full blast, I crave all things involving fruits. I want my fragrances juicy and uplifting, I want to practically bathe in all things that make me feel happy. I want the sun to liquify itself into my perfume. I fell in love the first time I ever smelled Xerjoff La Capitale. Utterly delicious, sticky sweet, as if you just bit into those caramel apples at a holiday fair, festive and bright, it’s impossible to let this olfactory gem go unnoticed.

Sergio Momo the founder and creative director of Xerjoff and the Xerjoff Universe since 2004 has appealed to avid collectors and perfumistos; it’s impossible not to notice that with every release, Sergio Momo manages to keep us on our toes and I have the utmost respect for the level of creativity that requires. It’s great to see multiple fragrance releases all use imagination and most importantly high quality ingredients. Every new Xerjoff project offers something different to experience, always revealing a hidden facet to explore. I remembered my first encounter with Xerjoff fragrances back in 2011, the early years of niche exploration, and it was a memorable one. I could never forget how invigorating that gin and tonic vibe felt when I first smelled Renaissance 1861.

Inspired by the heart of Russia, La Capitale is a refined perfume glorifying the charm of the country rich in art, history, and culture. And at the same time to celebrate the modernity and romanticism of Moscow, a metropolis made of thousands of different districts with its own tales to tell and charms to spell.

The opening of Xerjoff La Capitale smells like a gorgeous take on a tart strawberry jam with a hint of overripe peach mixed into it. Full-bodied with an aftertaste of a beautifully aged port. You immediately pick up on leathery facets and a touch of smoky Oud in the background, adding a resinous feeling to the fragrance’s heart. If the opening is sweet and a blast full of fruits, then the heart is all about aromatic spices of leather rubbed with Iranian saffron until it gets a deep yellow hue and a spicy sweet aroma. A pinch of ginger let the base melt into the soft, slightly balsamic benzoin and delicious vanilla bourbon. La Capitale is an explosively fruity, mouthwatering affair of caramel-dipped strawberries and smoky woods. A marvelous composition that isn’t afraid to show it’s ready to play. This one has a free spirit and a character that’s hard to contain. Slightly flamboyant yet irresistibly charismatic.

A true Slavic combination of the smoky and slightly oily aroma of leather boots, dry, warm air of the wooden house, and a cup of steaming tea served with none other but a traditional strawberry jam or, as most people from the Soviet Union call it “varenje”. As kids, my cousins and I were the responsible parties for gathering the harvest every summer so our grandmothers could make the jam for everyone to savor during the long and cold winter months.

Sweet, slightly spicy, the combination of these flavors brings back some beautiful childhood memories. Soviet kids will always have a soft spot for strawberries, whether fresh or in a jam. All berries were available only in the summer season and tasted so good we would stuff our bellies with them until we couldn’t move anymore. This kid is all grown up now but still has fond memories of that pungent, juicy scent of the ripe crimson strawberries in the bowl, and the careless attitude of childhood. Yet now she is clad in a caramel shade silk dress, and has a taste for all things luxury and exquisite because after all that’s what Xerjoff always stood for.

Notes: Strawberry, Peach, Labdanum, Caramel, Rose & Amber, Leather, Iranian Saffron, Ginger, Oud, Benzoin, Vanilla Bourbon

The perfume was kindly gifted to me but opinions are always my own.

  • Olya says Xerjoff La Capitale was an instant love for her. The perfume begins with a tart strawberry jam and peachy notes and has smoky and gourmand vibes to it. It is an appropriate fragrance for summer and has been inspired by the heart of Russia. MY fav. from Xerjoff is Naxos. I am in US.

I miss making jam!! I have so many fond memories of grandma’s making jam and jellies. The price of the berries are too high for jam this year even at you pick prices. I like the reference to the caramel color silk dress….Xerjoff is definitely high class. My favorites are in the Casamorati line……especially Dama Bianca for summer and Italica for winter. I did get my nose on Starlite this summer and it was amazing. You can’t go wrong with Xerjoff. Thanks for the chance. USA

  • Ian Andrews says:

This sounds incredible! Super fruity fragrances can be hit or miss, but I trust xerjoff. Would love to smell this

  • Indigo Rivera says:

My mouth is watering at the descriptions of the scent, I love strawberries and haven’t had the pleasure of trying too many good jammy perfumes. I would love to try La Capitale and hope to viscerally evoke some of the beautiful types of feelings the writer expresses here! I adore Bouquet Ideale and Irisss, so I am sure La Capitale must be delightful!

  • safegotem says:

This fragrance sounds so sexy. Would love to own a full bottle of Xerjoff. Only have samples. This would be great for date nights & intimate settings.

  • I am a sucker for fruity/leather oud combos. This sounds like one of those. The fruity opening is something a lot would enjoy. The introduction of leather and oud with the strawberry jam notes will make this a banger! I hate fully fruity composition and fully oudy compositions; but this combination is amazing! The connection to Russian countryside is a good reference. I would love to try it. USA

  • Xerjoff La Capitale sounds like a wonderful Gourmand Fragrance. The notes strawberry & Peach. This Fragrance sounds perfect for Summertime. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • Xerjoff is an amazing house. I have heard such good things about Le Capital but I have not experienced it myself. My favorite from the house is Bouquet Ideale. In maryland.

  • LightOfJoy says:

Oh my goodness! I loved how Olya described how she prefers her perfume personalities: “I want the sun to liquify itself into my perfume”, or ” Slightly flamboyant yet irresistibly charismatic”.

My current favorite from Xerjoff is Symphonium. A friend turned me on recently to this very gourmand luscious skin liquor.

I live in Texas, USA, and thank you for this most generous draw and excellent review. It was a pleasure to read.

  • Alice Wang says:

Hi olya, I’d love to try this because the strawberry, peach and caramel note sounds amazing. My favorite xerjoff are lira, symphonium and bouquet ideale. USA.

  • I really enjoyed Olya explaining her connection with the scent and how it reminded her of her childhood picking berries to be turned into jam and eating them of course. La Capitale sounds really nice with the fruitiness as well as the resinous, caramel, and vanillic base. Hard to choose a favorite Xerjoff, I do enjoy Mefisto for warm weather. Thanks for the generous draw, from the U.S.

  • sillage4ever says:

Strawberry is a tricky note that can lean girlish but Olya makes this sounds like a mature woman’s strawberry jam scent not to be missed. No favorites from Xerjoff yet though I do recognize the quality. Appreciate the drawing, I’m in the USA.

  • Love the thought of strawberry with leather.
    Sounds like an amazing offering.
    Oklahoma USA

  • I have had several Xerjoff fragrances, to this day Naxos is still my favorite. I also have never had a fragrance that has had Strawberry as a prominent note so I am looking forward to this. Thanks for the draw. Tennessee, USA

  • Those strawberries look so red and luscious! I’ve been enjoying the local berries immensely this summer, along with the juicy peaches I’ve been able to get. The way La Capitale combines those with spices sounds totally up my alley. Mouthwatering, indeed. So far my favorite that I’ve from Xerjoff has been Dolce Amalfi; the line does fruit notes so well. I am from New England, USA.

  • Olya has written a delicious review of Xerjoff La Capitale with pictures of delicious strawberries, peaches and the lovely bottle of Xerjoff La Capitale itself. Nice description of her childhood memories. I love oud perfumes and though not a big fan of sweet, gourmand perfumes, Xerjoff La Capitale has Xerjoff name behind it, so it is likely a lovely perfume. I have tried Mamluk and Alexandria II by Xerjoff. Thanks for the charming review and a generous draw. From the USA.

  • I enjoyed reading about how Olya enjoyed the summer berries. La Capitale sounds deliciously delightful. A perfect warm weather fragrance. Thanks for another awesome article and draw. Mich USA

  • I imagine myself clad in a caramel shade silk dress and with a taste for all things luxury and exquisite because, after all, it is Xerjoff!

  • Olya did a fantastic job here on La Capitale review. The strawberry tart smell is something I love, and the addittion of peaches, the slightly spices and how it is inspired in the fantastic city of Moscow surely makes this fragrance something unique.
My favorite from the brand is Renaissance.
    USA here.

  • It’s no secret the quality Xerjoff puts into its fragrances. The fruitiness of La Capitale mixed with leather and hints of oud sounds amazing. I’ve tried about 6 Xerjoff fragrances and absolutely love them all, I couldn’t pick one over the other. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • chrisskins says:

I have a few interpretations of strawberries but, sadly, none that “hits the spot”. This one sounds delicious. Rich and decadent. You had me at “crimson”. I live in the USA.

  • Sounds really nice. Fruitiness with a smoky vibe.
Haven’t tried this yet so it’ll be nice to get a chance. Good to know that Olya loves this one.
    Thanks for the giveaway, Ca

  • GennyLeigh says:

Oh yum! This sounds delectable and perfect for summer. Strawberry, peach, caramel and vanilla bourbon are an amazing gourmand mix. The base of leather and oud give some structure. I see why Olya finds this so reminiscent of her childhood. Favorite Xerjoff is Italica. MD,USA.

  • Thank you Olya for giving us a glimpse of your memory lane 🙂 I’ve loved most of the Xerjoff fragrances that I’ve tried so far with Naxos still my favorite. I’m also crazy for More Than Words but don’t wear it much as my spouse does not like it. It sounds like La Capitale is a gourmand for the ages. I’m in USA

  • This sounds like an incredible fragrance! I’ve only had the pleasure of trying a few Xerjoff scents – my favorite being Golden Dallah.
The mix of tart fruits with oud/leather and saffron is an exquisite combination!
    I live in the US.

  • I’m familiar with Capitale, fragrance with a character, that has a lot of layers, patchouli caramel, fruits , and leather undertones .
I love such non-linear artistic gourmands, something to be expected of all Xerjoff gourmands of course.
“I could never forget how invigorating that gin and tonic vibe felt when I first smelled Renaissance 1861.”
How I felt when I smelled Naxos for the first time .
Never been to Moscow, I like the way Olya
filled us in not only about the fragrance, but the jam she co-made as a kid.
Naxos and La Capitale are my favorite Xerjoff fragrances
    Thanks for the draw

Great review!!! I don’t own any Xerjoff fragrance yet but you got me with fruity, sweet and oud!!!! I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US. Fingers crossed!!!!!

  • Bravo, Olya! Such a beautiful review eith beautiful pics!!
Love Moscow and this part of article: “delicious, sticky sweet, as if you just bit into those caramel apples at a holiday fair, festive and bright” – is enough to me to looking forward to find tester ir sample of this perfume for testing.
Love Xerjoff very much – Mefisto ❤️

  • I started reading this review and looked at the beautiful photography, and I too-abruptly assumed La Capitale wouldn’t be for me, as I rarely reach for particularly sweet and fruity fragrances. The strawberry, ripe peach, and aged port opening sounds beautiful and sticky. But then you highlighted some leathery notes, smoky oud, resins, saffron, and woods, all my speed, and surely an intriguing juxtaposition to jammy strawberries. I also like how this scent is a tribute to Russian culture—I didn’t know strawberries were so significant and nostalgic. Thanks for the review Olya.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Xerjoff fragrances.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about Olya’s review of Xerjoff La Capitale is how she beautifully described this fragrance with the fruity facets of strawberry and peach along with a smoky resinous oud, leather, and spicy saffron. I love how Olya associates this fragrance to her childhood. I’ve heard so many great things about this fragrance and I would love to try it. My favorite fragrance from Xerjoff is Naxos. I’m from Ohio, USA.

  • Through La Capitale , and Olya review people worldwide could learn about Russia , and its rich culture , historical sightseeings of Moscow, but also and the importance of varenje for Olya’s childhood.
To be fair translating “varenje” as “jam” is not correct, it’s popular in all Slavic countries, not just in Ex-USSR , and it’s usually not as thick, but depending on consistency is
more like something in between jam and compote.
I knew Xerjoff, but like Olya with Renaissance, I had similar experience with not only the best Casamorati, the best Xerjoff , and one of the best gourmands ever – Italica , the awesome Toffee Almond Cake (traditional recipe) , famous Italian cake smell.
Truly special fragrance, I really mean it , that’s why my expectations for La Capitale are so high, first thing I’d do when I sample the fragrance, is to compare it to Italica.
Olya take on the fragrance reminded me of Saffron Cake with Strawberries and Peach, drizzled with warm caramel.
Eating the cake with a dollop of yogurt , while sitting on a leather couch is what I’m thinking right now.
Appreciate the culinary references Olya made , the whole review , and the giveaway campaign

  • I adore this one and would be interested to win a bottle. I know there are a lot of people trying to win this baby so my chances are “0” but I will give it try.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Beautiful review and I had no idea this one was inspired by Russia. I love the strawberry jam note here and I love your description of this one being a kid all grown up. It’s hard to chose a favorite Xerjoff but I’d probably have to say Jebel may be my fave. Thank you for the draw. In the US.

  • IvanVelikov says:

The new hype train is already here .La Capitale is not only is inspired by Moscow , one of the greatest cities in the world , but also has its own elaborate tales to tell.
Ideally balanced , multifaceted sweet, warm spicy fragrance , and it’s made by Xerjoff? Not to mention Olya genuinely loves the way it smells
Wow … La Capitale is special , and I believe I’d feel in good spirits while wearing it.
Michelyn told us once, it’s all about craftsmanship for Sergio Momo, and for me too , I’m a tailor after all.
My favorite Xerjoff is Lira .
    Thank you Olya and Europerfumes

  • This was a lovely review about this Xerjoff fragrance, the way Olya talks about the many facets of the metropolis of Moscow and the memories of her childhood in the Soviet where her cousins gathered strawberries for jam for her grandparents and the fond memories that strawberries bring. This really makes me want to try this strawberry, leathery boozy scent. My fave of the Xerjoff house at the moment is Erba Pura and I live in the USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

From Xerjoff, the only fragrance I’ve tried is “Naxos” which I do like. I own and enjoy a fragrance which has a strawberry accord: it is Calvin Klein “Euphoria Intense for Men” and I like it. I’d like to add another fragrance to my collection which features a strawberry accord. I like the sound of the fruitiness with the spices, the leather, and the vanilla. I live in the U.S.A.

  • petergigov says:

Learning about the La Capitale was such a delight , awesome post Olya ! The different facets set up by the perfumer are impressive.
The new Xerjoff , new to me at least, is not one dimensional , there’s gourmand elements , tiny bit of smoke, and sensuality coming from the leather . Posh fragrance at its best. I need such perfumes in my collection.
I’d wear La Capitale going out to a bar , or live event , such situations I think will suit La Capitale the best. I’ll look for samples. My expectations are beyond high
Out of all Xerjoff lines, my favorites are Casamorati Lira , Opera , Italica and Amabile.
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA

Thank you for that great review Olya.

Everything in it exploded with summer – sun ripened berries in soft sunlight and green notes, fresh cream and the enjoyment of long days. I’m very curious to see how the smoky notes play into this.

    My favourite Xerjoff is Fiero.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • La Capitale by Xerjoff sounds like an interesting mix of notes. I never experienced any fragrance with strawberries as a main note. I appreciate the profile outlined by Olya as fruity, smoky, spicy, woody with leathery facets. I hope I win La Capitale. I don’t have any favorite from Xerjoff yet.

I have a soft spot for Italy , country full of sightseeings, and kind of wild , and passionate people , but also birthplace to such fragrance, and marketing geniuses like Sergio Momo.
His collaborations are second to none, with Tommy Iommi – Monkey Special, Save Me, with Queen’s Brian May , another legendary guitarist , Torino21 with ATP association, and so on.
La Capitale was originally released as an exclusive to the Moscow Xerjoff Boutique, then re-released as a limited edition on the Xerjoff Universe website , and due to high demand now everyone can order it.
In my opinion La Capitale is like a love child of 3 parents, it takes the strawberry/fruity sweetness of Erba Pura , spiced boozy vanilla of Bouquet Ideale , oud-rose base of Alexandria II .The leather and the rose imo do add very nice depth and complexity to the scent.
    My favorite Xerjoff is Mamluk
    All profiles I already follow , @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Strawberries and peaches, that’s what really caught my eye! However mixing with the other notes of leather, ginger, saffron, and vanilla make it sound like an interesting perfume to develop through. It’ll be interesting to see what a Russian summer would smell like!
I don’t have a favorite yet because I haven’t tried anything from the brand yet. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Sergio Momo, like almost all Italians i met truly love his country , cherish Italian culture, and is proud of his heritage, I love it.
Olya Moscow, and overall Russian introduction was helpful to me, to sort of feel better the spirit of “La Capitale”
When I think of it , I like everything about the fragrance, the fruits, the caramel , leather and the saffron
No questions asked , provocative, flirtatious perfumery
The best Xerjoff fragrances in my opinion are Cruz del Sur II , followed by Golden Dallah , and then comes my old love Lira.
    Thank you the opportunity

Love all my Xerjoff perfumes! One of my favorite houses. I have eight different Xerjoff perfumes and would love to add this one to my Xerjoff family.
