Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon Review (Whitney Swales) 2021 + Late Summer Speakeasy Giveaway

Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon

Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon

Every honeybee
Fills with jealousy
When they see you out with me
I don’t blame them
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose
When we’re passin’ by
Flowers droop and sigh
And I know the reason why
You’re much sweeter
Goodness knows
Honeysuckle rose
— Fats Waller, “Honeysuckle Rose”

Clara Bow Roaring twenties

Clara Bow in the film It, 1927

This joint is jumpin, the piano’s thumpin’ and this here spot is more than hot. It’s a summer night in Chicago, round about 1922. The heat steams, rising from the asphalt like an entourage of frisky ghosts. Sweat beads like tiny diamonds on flapper foreheads as they dance a furious Charleston in one of the Andersonville dance halls. But down the street, tucked into the back of an alley where the men light their cigarillos in the shadows and their women purse their lips in bee-stung pouts, there’s a speakeasy where a ballad is being hammered out on an old, yellowed piano. All along the wire fence at the end of the street, tendrils of wild honeysuckle have set up home. Their vines curl like cigarette smoke around the cold metal, sweet perfume caressing the night air. Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon evokes a lazy, long August night on a 20’s Chicago Street where the weather is torpid but the jazz is cool. Sappy, sensual, full-bodied, Honeysuckle Halcyon is a Clara Bow starlet, equal parts wide-eyed innocence and provocative sensuality.

Wit and West  artisan natural perfumer perfumer Whitney Swales,  describes her inspiration for Honeysuckle Halcyon as “an homage to jazz clubs and speakeasies of the early 1920s.” Created with a rare honeysuckle absolute oil and deliberately few top notes, Honeysuckle Halcyon puts its namesake flower squarely centerstage. On first spray, Honeysuckle Halcyon lets you know exactly what she’s about. After a few generous spritzes, my arm is drenched in deliriously pretty, honeyed flower that strikes me as an easygoing little sister to Parfums Delrae’s gorgeous Amoureuse: heady, syrupy and sensual. But baby girl is out for a good time and mixes in some peach juice and a scattering of mimosa blossoms. It is sweet, but not overly so, juicy and languid, and makes me want to twirl into the arms of someone mama warned me against.

The  construction of Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon is carefully thought-out. At the outset, mimosa provides a fluffy, powderpuff introduction to opulent honeysuckle in the perfume’s heart. But not before the florals pick a few peaches from the garden, dripping with tangy-sweet juice. The mimosa-peach cocktail is absolutely delicious, and I’m sat here wondering why I haven’t encountered this combination before. The peach has a light zippiness that seems more white peach than Georgia yellow, and it adds just the right complement and counterbalance to mimosa’s ethereal hay-and-honey fragrance. The honeysuckle makes her entrance early, speckled with lovely, green boxwood accents and densely sappy. Soon after, I notice unexpected surprises: a dry cocoa note coming up behind the honeysuckle – likely the combination of the particular patchouli  Whitney Swales uses is paired with the vetiver — and a tickly little mint note. She explains that the minty aspect also derives from the patchouli – which is a relation of the mint family – and the version she uses here draws out that quality.

If honeysuckle is the leading lady of this scent, jasmine is the supporting player. Neither indolic nor girlish, the jasmine sambac at the perfume’s center is fruity and creamy, lighter and less spicy than grandiflorum. It is the perfect anchor for the honeysuckle and mimosa, enhancing the vine flower’s green-tinged, pollenous scent. Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon dries down after about 45 minutes to a mellow, cocoa-infused floral. The honeysuckle stays forefront, while the mimosa fades, as it often does, into hints straw and face powder. Vetiver, which so often trumpets its presence in perfumes, stays quiet in the base, letting that chocolatey patchouli do most of the lifting.

Syrupy, voluptuous Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon puts me in mind of one of those sultry nights when time seems to slow to the tempo of a languid waltz, where the dancers sway against each other, feet barely tracing a box step. The air is thick with humidity, and crickets call to each other in their rhythmic rise and fall. The scent of sweet blooms hangs like a fringe over the night sky, and inside the club, Fats Waller is teasing the keys of an old piano in a slow, saucy love song.

Notes: Mimosa, peach, honeysuckle, jasmine sambac, patchouli, Haitian vetiver.

  • I adore Amoureuse and have wondered how to replace it when I run out. This may be perfect! I would love to give this perfume a try. I live in the USA.

  • I don’t usually associate honeysuckle with jazz clubs. but I’m familiar with the Fats Waller tune, “Honeysuckle Rose” and I can see how that delicate spring flower could work in that context. The floral melange of jasmine, honeysuckle and mimosa seems to be supported by a chocolately patchouli and a minty vetiver with a nice juicy peach in the background. Wit and West is an interesting American indie perfume house. I would love to hear more about them. MD, USA.

I’m intrigued by the honeysuckle oil in this perfume. I have osmanthus perfumes but have not yet encountered the plant. Howdy from Texas!

I love honeysuckle, it is very feminine indolic and elegant at the same time. Unfortunately I am from EU

  • I’ve been looking for the perfect honeysuckle perfume and this sounds like it might be it! I love the combination with jasmine, one of my favorite notes, and the peach seems like it would bring out the qualities I love in both flowers. I’m in MN, USA

  • I love honeysuckle. I was surprised to see it combined with jazz. the cocoa was an unexpected surprise as well. I’m going straight away to the Wit and West site. thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Lauryn did a nice job of creating the atmosphere of a hot, sultry evening in Chicago with the sound of jazz in the air and smell of honeysuckle from a nearby vine wafting by. One can imagine summer evenings like that, with different types of flowers and summer fairs, music, concerts and so on. But Wit and West Perfumes Honeysuckle Halcyon, as the creator Whitney describes it, is “an homage to jazz clubs and speakeasies of the early 1920s.” Honeysuckle Halcyon creates the atmosphere of a lazy relaxed summer evening, and I would like to try it. Thanks for the draw and review. I am in the USA.

  • Those notes sound delightful on a woman. I love the smell of honeysuckle in the humid air of night. I’d love to smell this on my lady. New Jersey, USA.

  • Oh WOW, I got so excited reading this review. There are honeysuckle vines all around our property, and for about a week this last late spring every time I stepped outside I was overwhelmed with their gorgeous, heady aroma. The other notes (peach!!!) in this perfume sound beautifully considered to support and enhance that honeysuckle smell. Thanks for this very exciting giveaway!

What a beautiful review. I used to live in Chicago and this review brought back memories of long, hot, sultry Chicago August nights. I remember there was once a blackout and my whole neighborhood sat out on our stoops and just enjoyed the heavy night air together. I love the old standard “Honeysuckle Rose,” especially Lena Horne’s magnificent rendition. I love ALL the notes in Honesuckle Halcyon.

  • I heard of wit and west from a previous article here. I have been looking into them and am very interested in their work. This particular scent has so many great notes. In maryland

  • What an amazing perfume by an american perfumer. This is surely a masterpice; I adore sweet fragrances and this one would be a perfect addition to my collection with the Honeysuckle and the jasmine, a great combination.

  • I really enjoyed the scene-setting intro to this review, Lauryn! I’ll admit that Honeysuckle Halcyon sounds more sweet and floral than I’d typically wear, but I like the idea of a honeysuckle fragrance that highlights its namesake, and the chocolatey patchouli in the base. And who doesn’t like the smell of peaches? I need to try some Wit and West perfumes—they’ve been on my list after reading coverage here.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Fascinating review ! What strikes me about Wit and West Honeysuckle Halcyon is the idea of a perfume inspired by the speakeasies and illicit allure of the 1920s. A scent that embodies the juxtaposition of sensuality and innocence of 1920’s “It” girls sounds incredibly enticing and I am very interested in trying it. I live in the US.

  • Ohhhh, I love honeysuckle in real life. The peach and mimosa combination is definitely intriguing and I can’t wait to smell it. I could imagine the honeysuckle as lush and languid with that jazz club setting. I was impressed that given the high percentage of naturals in the compositions the ones I’ve sampled from the line have pretty good longevity! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I have heard of Wit and West, but never had the pleasure of trying any of their scents. Honeysuckle is an absolute favorite of mine to wear in summer weather, which here in Texas is about 8 months out of the year! Honeyed flowers sound irresistible. Thank you for the review and the draw. I am in the USA.

  • Thanks for the great review Lauryn!
It was cool to read about this wonderful honeysuckle fragrance. Honeysuckle is such an intoxicating and heady fragrance in nature and I cannot imagine what an essential oil of the flower must smell like.

The use of peach, mimosa and jasmine flower to mellow it out, is quite interesting.

It’s wonderful to see such great work from local perfumers.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I have always loved finding a honeysuckle vine in summer, pulling out each little drop of nectar in the center of the flower. I cannot imagine being able to just wear this like a goddess of summer! This sounds absolutely luxurious but fun at the same time. Thank you for making this! I hope to try it!
