We Love This Store: Fragrance Vault, 4000 South Lake Tahoe, California + Black Friday #Shopsmall Giveaway

4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd, Suite 5, South Lake Tahoe, California.

Fragrance Vault 4000 South Lake Tahoe, California

Walking into the Fragrance Vault is like walking into history – shelves decorated with factices from every decade and brand, glass chandeliers welcoming you into a time filled with more glitz and glamour. The Fragrance Vault sits nestled underneath the Sierra Nevada mountains that surround Lake Tahoe, bathed in alpine sunsets in the summer, and pristine white snow in the winter. The owner, Jana Menard, is a true aficionado of perfumes vintage, rare, niche, and everything in between. It has had several homes in its 10 years, but the newest is tucked away in the back of the Village Center Lake Tahoe and is a space entirely of Jana’s creation.

Fragrance vault carries over 10,000 niche, designer and vintage perfumes

After one location too small, and one location larger, but decked with purple carpets from the previous tenants, Jana’s new location was given to her in July of 2021, during the height of the pandemic. In the midst of building her online business, she found time to remodel the space from top to bottom. Now, with light, ashy wood floors, glossy gray cabinets lining the walls, and blown glass lamps surrounding the store, the space is truly a step into the past.

wolf rescue

Meet Oliver, a Malumute Mix

Entering the Fragrance Vault, you are greeted first by this customized space, and second, by one of a variety of northern breed dogs. In her little spare time when she’s not running the brick & mortar store, packing online orders, and communicating with perfumers all over the world, Jana finds time to not only run a northern breed and wolfdog rescue, the Lupine Canine, but to be as much of a name in that community as she is in the world of perfume. Much of the Fragrance Vault’s profits go to funding this philanthropic venture – to keeping her dogs, the ones only she is qualified to take, fed, cared for, and living lives of absolute indulgence.

MendittoRosa Daymon

MendittoRosa Albatross, Orlo and Ithaka

Of course, for that to happen, Jana’s inventory has to be nothing short of impressive. Spanning from small, artisanal perfumers from across Europe and North America, like Les Indemodables, MendittoRosa, and Rogue Perfumery, to rare, vintage finds and Shalimar dating back a hundred years, to of course, the commercial classics of YSL, Dior, Chanel. Perhaps most striking about this collection of 10,000+ fragrances, however, is Jana’s ability to match any person that walks through the door to their “signature scent.” Not only does she know the scent profile of every single perfume in her shop, but she can find a scent on little more than a feeling that a customer wants to invoke.

Vintage Guerlain L'Heure Bleue

Fragrance Vault stocks vintage Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, Mistouko and over a thousand more discontinued beauties in the V vault, including one of Michelyn’s favorites Cartier Must Eau de Parfum

One simple phone call or email to the store to set up an appointment, and people from all over the country are able to benefit from Jana’s expertise – from arranging flights of Chanel No. 5 from every decade, to introducing the perfume enthusiast to new brands not available anywhere else in North America. Of course, more casual visitors are welcome to walk through the front doors and explore and sniff to their heart’s content. For those not within driving distance, Jana’s website offers a similar experience. Customers can buy samples of nearly every vintage, rare, and niche offering in the store, delivered straight to their front door.

Best niche perfumes

There is no doubt that the Fragrance Vault is a unique find – a perfume “vault” of world class quality, tucked away in a small town in Lake Tahoe. This, perhaps, adds to its charm. It is so unexpected to see such elegance in a town best known for its winter sports offerings, and yet, backed by towering mountains and just a few minutes’ walk from the shores of the clearest lake in the United States, the Fragrance Vault is able to claim something that not many stores can: people are drawn in from all over the country to visit the store, with the vacation in Lake Tahoe little more than an added benefit.

Fragrance Vault is preparing for one of its biggest events ever: Scent Xplore, in Manhattan, on December 2nd and 3rd. Jana will be showcasing 13 of her most special niche lines, including Grossmith London, Les Indemodables, MendittoRosa, and Art de Parfum. If you’re not already planning on tuning in for this special event, it will almost certainly be worth it!

It’s Black Friday and Fragrance Vault has not forgotten – anyone who purchases a full bottle, online or in person, will receive a free 5ml decant from the same line. We are also proud to announce that Rogue Perfumery is now available in store and  soon online

  • I did not know about this store although I visit that area often. Thanks for letting us know about it. The work Jana did during the pandemic and her dedication to her causes is beautiful. I personally love historical locations and especially for fragrances. I have visited a few in Italy and France but it’s excellent to see someone is bringing that vibe to the US.

“Perhaps most striking about this collection of 10,000+ fragrances, however, is Jana’s ability to match any person that walks through the door to their “signature scent.” Not only does she know the scent profile of every single perfume in her shop, but she can find a scent on little more than a feeling that a customer wants to invoke.” This is remarkable and I have always admired people who did that. One time I walked into a small shop in Italy and the lady there immediately brought a perfume and shouted “this is you! This is you!” I was new to perfumes then. I tried it out and believe it or not she was correct. I will never forget that. I am glad to know that Jana has that ability and I will make sure to check the store out.

I have always been curious about the two brands offered. For Les Indemobables I would be interested in vanille havane. For Monegal I would be interested in Ole or Alhambra Oud or Soul of Oud.

Thank you both fir the review and for the great information.

  • Looks like Fragrance Vault lives up to its name, with more than 10,000 fragrances in a bigger showroom now where visitors can experience rare, niche, and vintage fragrances. As someone who is into classics and vintage, I will def. enjoy my visit whenever that happens. I have smelled few versions of Chanel 5 so it will be interesting to smell formula from every decade. My choice for this draw is Musc Des Sables by Les Indemodables. I am in US.

  • It has to be said, what an interesting concept for a shop. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Jana or visiting this unique store, but if I ever travel to California, I’ll gladly take a detour and visit Fragrance Vault. The walk through fragrance history certainly appeals to me. If I were lucky enough to win this giveaway, I think that I would pick Les Indemodables “Vanille Havane”, it has been on my radar for a long time so I truly appreciate this oppurtunity.

I do not live in the USA, but I have acquaintances there that could accept it for me and in turn send it to my country. I sincerely hope that this is possible.

  • I thought I had a somewhat big collection with around full-sized bottles, and then I learn that Jana Menard has a whooping collection of over 10,000 bottles, spanning over entire decades. What a lucky gal…

I am really interested in visiting Fragrance Vault, no less because of the adorable dogs, haha. Even though I have a pretty sizable collection, I do not yet have any particular one that I would call my signature, so hopefully Jana could help me with that.

If I were to win, I think I’d like a bottle of Ramon Monegal Alhambra Oud. I have heard some rave reviews for that one, calling it one of the best ouds on the market.

I do not reside in the US, but I do have a friend living in the States that can accept the bottle for me, and then send it to me. I’d like to not miss out on such a big oppurtunity, so I hope this can work.

  • “Much of the Fragrance Vault’s profits go to funding this philanthropic venture – to keeping her dogs, the ones only she is qualified to take, fed, cared for, and living lives of absolute indulgence.” I’m so thankful we have people like this populating the world. Jana seems to be such a sweet and kind person. I’d gladly have her take me on a walk through the history of fragrance.

Both Les Indemobables and Ramon Monegal are fantastic brands, and it certainly wasn’t easy picking a particular fragrance that I would want to win, but in the end I chose Vanille Havane from Les Indemobables. It’s so deep and have been etched into my subconcious since I first sampled it. I’d be thrilled to win a full bottle. Thank you Fragrance Vault, and Cafleurebon. Good luck everyone!

Sadly, I do not live in the USA, but a good friend of mine do, and they can accept it for me. I wish that this can be arranged.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I was struck by the selection from the shop. This place sounds like heaven. I would love to spend hours here! I would love to win LI cuir de chine. I live in Indiana

  • What appealed to me was finding out about Jana’s talent to match people to their signature scent. For the draw I pick the Les Indemodables Musc de Sables. US

  • The Fragrance Vault seems like a perfume collectors heaven! What pricked my ears was when Devina wrote that Jana can arrange “flights of Chanel no 5 from every decade!” That’s some creativity and some real personal service! If I ever get back to Lake Tahoe, I will most certainly put this on my list of things to do. Also, it is wonderful that Jana has a speciality dog rescue. It takes a true heart of gold to do that.

This is spectacular giveaway! I would love to win Les Indemobables Vanille Havane. In the USA.

  • Thank you Devina for this beautiful virtual trip.
Such a beautiful and comfortable and atmospheric shop with beautiful selection. Jana Menar’s collection is just amazing !
The dog is cute! I think the dog has refined nose too))
I would be very happy to win Vanille Havane Les Indemodables.
    USA

  • Jana Menard’s abilities sound quite impressive with being able to discern a stranger’s likely signature scent in minutes. I’ve had similar experiences from two fragrance specialists – once when a specialist gave me a sample of Aqua Di Gio Profumo that I instantly fell in love with, actually started me on the fragrance journey and wore for several years. The second was at an airport Duty Free when I walked in and was sprayed with Bvlgari Tygar that also turned out to be just me. Thank you Devina for adding to my repertoire of fragrance shopping sites and to Fragrance Vault for the kind giveaway 🙂 I would love to win Ramon Monegal’s Agar Musk in furtherance of my search for the ultimate Musk. I’m in USA

  • The Fragrance Vault looks like a perfume lover’s paradise!! What a beautiful store. I live on the other side of the US but will be sure to make a stop next time I’m in the area. If I was lucky enough to win a bottle of perfume, I would select Musc des Sables from Les Indémodables. Of all the samples I have tried from the house, Musc des Sables has stolen my heart. ~I live in Indiana

  • Independent perfume stores are great places to explore. I love to lose myself in new scents I never knew I needed, particularly when there’s a knowledgeable sales staff to help. Fragrance Vault looks like a beautiful place to spend a few hours and I’ll certainly check it out next time I’m in the area. I would love to have a bottle of Les Indemobables Cuir de Chine. MD, USA.

  • Oh boy, Great article by Devina.
I love visiting small shops and even better if they are fragrance shops. I have not gone yet to Fragrance Vault but surely I will after reading this.
I love the elegance, the cozyness and the warm that this place has, it is just amazing how they managed to get such a beatiful place for perfume lovers and entusiasts.
I would love to win Les Indemobables Iris Perle.
I would love to shop at Fragrance Vault so I can get amazing fragrance and have a great time with my beloved ones.
    USA here.

  • Wow, over 10,000 fragrances. Jana sounds like the fragrance whisperer. I would love to go to this shop and see what she would choose for me. I googled it and it is only a little over an hour from where my son and family live, so I must take a little detour!! I love that Guerlain picture. I’d love to investigate that line at her shop and hopefully find a “bee” bottle. I’d love to win Flamenco by Monegal. Thanks for the chance and bringing my attention to this shop that is in a location easy for me to visit!!! USa.

  • WOW I had never heard of Fragrance Vault but now it is on my list of places to visit for sure! I love the photos and the option to either get a specific appointment in advance or just to browse. If I am lucky enough to win the giveaway I would love a bottle of Les Indemodables Vanille Havane. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Wow such a HUGE variety of fragrances at one truly one of a kind place. If Devina Stone article was YouTube video, i would’ve
instantly subscribe to her channel, hopefully in the future video tour of the “Vault” would be available.
What draws me into Fragrance Vault is mostly the variety, 10,000+ fragrances, samples , and love for Northern breeds of dogs , Jana Menard place is more than unique, but also welcoming.
After some browsing through the Fragrance Vault site, Les Indemodables VANILLE HAVANE is the fragrance i’d like to win.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Aside from the obvious fact that this is a perfume treasure trove, it is additionally a beautiful glasswork museum! I could spend hours just looking at the different bottles and how they’re shaped. It takes years of passion and dedication to build a collection this big!! I would love to win Ambra Di Luna by Ramon Mongel.
    I am from the US

  • What a beautiful shop! I also love that they offer decants from what I saw on the website! Thank you for introducing a new shop, and thanks for the draw! I would choose Les Indemobables Fougere Emeraude.
    In the US.

  • Thank you Devina, your descriptions made me feel as if I were strolling through the shop with you. Jana’s boutique sounds absolutely amazing; to be among so many scents, I would feel like royalty. I will have to visit if I am ever out that way. I appreciate people who have a passion for the history and art of fragrance so I would probably talk Jana’s ear off and leave with an abundance of knowledge (and a bag full of new loves). If I were to win, I’d probably go with Les Indemodables Vanille Havane (this was exceptionally difficult). Reading from North Carolina, USA

  • I really enjoyed this beautiful description of unique shop and emotions which gave being in there!
Fragrance Vault is really unique perfume shop with amazing decor and great selection of perfumes- from rare and vintage perfumes to modern beauties!!! I wish to visit Fragrance Vault !!
I would like to win Vanille Havane.
    US

  • Such a pleasant surprise
I love my modern day niche fragrances, but i also love my vintages. To me one could not go without the other , like Ying and Yang ☯️
Having such numbers of vintages, and especially early 20th century fragrances is close to impossible to replicate. I just can’t imagine the amount of work that went for creating such place. Fragrance Vault name i will remember, and if I’m in need of a vintages, and hard to find fragrances, I’ll give them a call . The noble cause is also admirable.
My pick is Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • Fragrance Vault seems to be a paradise on earth!!!! I scrolled through the website and I can’t believe so many jewels I found!!! I would love to try Vanille Havane (Les Indemobables) or Cafe del Mar (Ramon monegal). I’m from Massachusetts, MA.

  • I was aware of the Fragrance Vault online store, but I have never been to the store in person. It looks like a beautiful store to visit! I also love dogs and Oliver is adorable. I was intrigued to learn that Jana runs a northern breed and wolfdog rescue and that many of the profits go to this important cause. Animal rescue and welfare are something I care about very much, so now I want to visit Fragrance Vault even more. I have always been impressed by Fragrance Vault’s selection of fragrances, especially the harder-to-find fragrances. I did not, however, realize her inventory included 10,000 fragrances! If I ever visit Lake Tahoe, Fragrance Vault will be the first place on my list. It sounds like one of the best in-person shopping experiences in the country.

Thank you, Devina, for providing your Fragrance Vault experience, and thank you to Jana Menard for the incredible giveaway. Should I win this fantastic opportunity, I would choose Les Indemodables Vanille Havane. I am located in the USA.

  • I enjoyed Devina’s description of stepping foot into Fragrance Vault and it being like a blast from the past. The photos of the shop look beautiful and welcoming. I think it’s great that they cover all types of fragrances from vintage to new indy and niche. If I was able to get cross country I’d love to shop there for the experience and ability to try such a variety of scents, as well as for Jana’s knowledge. Also, I did like learning about the dogs Jana cares for and that proceeds from the store help to meet their needs. If I was to win I would choose Les Indemodables Musc Des Sables. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Wish more such vaults existed in other US (or worldwide) cities. Matching people to signature scents for people is appealing – also the ability to find discontinued or vintage scents is wonderful. Thanks for the draw – if I am the lucky lucky winner, I would pick Ramon Monegal ALHAMBRA OUD extrait de parfum. I am in the USA.

  • Fragrance Vault is on my bucket list to visit. I love the variety. I am impressed with all of the fragrances: classic, niche and, my favorite unisex scents. If lucky, I’d choose, from my wishlist, Soul of Oud or Rose de Jamal. Mich USA

  • Such a special place, I only know one other boutique selling both new , and vintage fragrances .
What i like about Jana Menard, is the fact she’s obviously passionate about fragrances, and she’s not just for profit…unlike some other places on the East Coast.
I feel like I’d feel welcomed, treated like a King , and I’ll remember every moment being there . I like not just the Fragrance Vault, but the caring person Jana Menard is , i wish her all the best.
Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables I’d love to win
Thank you Devina Stone , and Jana Menard, such a pleasure to read.

  • Would love to visit this store in beautiful Lake Tahoe! A Ramon Monegal sample of Flamenco fell in my lap and it is totally bottle worthy. Love the dogs hanging out in the store. My dogs actually will roll excitedly in a fragrance they love. Thank you for an amazing give away!

Oklahoma

  • What an amazing sounding store.
Would love to go to store and have Jana pick out my signature Ramon Monegal or Les Indemodables scent for me.
Vanilla Havane or Cherry Musk from Monegal would be my choices.

    Oklahoma USA

  • Obviously photos can’t quite capture the feeling of a space in person, but from this perspective, Fragrance Vault looks like a beautiful storefront. The gray cabinets really call attention to the myriad bottles on display and there’s plenty of room to maneuver around the store, browsing and sampling. The northern breed dogs also stand out; Oliver the Malumute Mix is a handsome fellow! I’d love to visit someday and experience the breadth of Jana’s inventory and expertise, and maybe say hi to some of the canine sales associates. Thanks for the detailed profile, Devina.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried either Les Indemodables or Ramon Monegal fragrances, but I looked through Fragrance Vault’s listings and I’d love Ramon Monegal UMBRA if I was to win. Thanks!

  • Wow this has me a little bit envious of Devina! Living in a rural town that doesnt even have a mall for testing fragrances Fragrance Vault sounds so exciting. I may plan a trip/ vacation to lake tahoe so that i can visit this beautiful store and Jana Menard. It sound like it would be such a pleasure to meet her due to her incredible knowledge when it comes to all of the fragrances she sells. I also feel very drawn to this store and Jana as a animal lover (I am a veternarian and assit low income familys with their pets needs) i really like that she runs a dog rescue and treats her fur babies like family! I resonate with her on multiple levels and she sounds like a incredible person i would love to meet one day.

Thank you to fragrance vault and cafleurebon for the amazing draw and black friday offer i was happy to take advantage of.

If i were to win my choice would be Musc Des Sables by Les Indemodables.

I am in North Carolina, USA

  • Regis Monkton says:

I would like to win a bottle of Les Indemomables “Fougere Emeraude” for multiple reasons, e.g. I can like tuberose in fragrances and this one seems like it isn’t feminine leaning. I appreciated hearing about Jana’s large selection of fragrances (including many vintage fragrances). Also, I think that it’s interesting that Jana has a good understanding of many fragrances. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Memory is often triggered by smells , more often food or fragrance , so being in the Fragrance Vault can bring back a lot of memories , or/and create new ones, especially this boutique’s vast assortment of rare, exotic, vintage and discontinued perfumes.
Unmistakably Jana Menard has put her heart ❤ and soul into Fragrance Vault. Each small , independent business owner can see it clearly from miles away.
The interior is urban and industrial, yet somehow feels warm and inviting .
I think It is easy to lose track of time in this fragrance library—there is so much to sniff and look at!
I think all isitors receive an unparalleled opportunity to sample and learn about the history, chemistry and culture of fragrance.
It isn’t just perfume, though , Fragrance Vault work in collaboration with animal rescue ventures . It is praiseworthy how significant portion of sales goes towards helping those animals in need.
I highly appreciate Devina Stone article, and the giveaway campaign
I’ll be happy to win Les Indemodables VANILLE HAVANE
    USA

  • I’m stunned by the share among the fragrances in “Fragrance Vault” , 10.000?!?
I’ve been to a lot of boutiques worldwide, and judging by the pictures “Fragrance Vault” could easily be the biggest one.
What I’m impressed the most, other than the amount of fragrances, is the coexistence of niche, indie and vintage fragrances all at once.
Fragrance Vault shares my never ending love for animals. I admire them for donating a percentage of their proceeds to northern breeds dogs animal shelters and charities.
Les Indemodables Vanille Havane if lucky
Cheers with Cabernet Sauvignon , and thank you for the opportunity

  • Jana Menard is a visionare with a character, and a mission
I never met her personally, but I spoke with one of her associates , the polite and knowledgeable lady by the name of Zenimue (how can I forget such a name, no way) .
What I’d like to add to the already beautiful contribution from Devina Stone, is that the Vault is not just a step into the past, but also the present and the future, you got from A to Z the best of all worlds.
I was specifically looking for 2 vintages:
    1. Vintage Poison EDP by Dior
    2. Vintage Eau Savage EDT again by Dior
If the fragrance you’re interested in is not currently in stock, you could tell Zenimue ,and they’ll find it for you
Super happy with my overall experience
Vanille Havane by Les Indemodables would be my choice
    @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • Thank you Devina into this super in depth review of such an interesting perfume store and purveyor. I have not visited a perfume store in many years and would love to check this one out.

I love how Jana is passionate both about perfumes and canine rescue. Her ability to read people and match them to fragrances is quite unique.

I would request Les Indemodables CHYPRE AZURAL

    Cheers from WI, USA

Lovely article Devina! What appealed to me about Devina’s visit to Fragrance Vault was learning that they stocks so many discontinued vintage fragrances such as Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, Mistouko and over a thousand more in their vault. Going there to sample them all sounds like pure heaven.

I would like to shop at Fragrance Vault because of not only their impeccable taste and curation but also to because much of the profits go to funding her philanthropic venture saving dogs! What an amazing mission that I wholeheartedly support!

If I were to win I would pick Ramon Monegal’s Alhambra Oud as my fragrant prize! I live in the US.
