 Oh, to be in England

Now that April’s there.~ Robert Browning, from Home-Thoughts, From  Abroad

Temperate zones, such as those in the British Isles – come to greening so much sooner than we in New England! There is a lush verdancy, a fullness which surrounds one like a mossy velvet mantle: moist, enveloping and accompanied by brilliant birdsong. And then, there’s tea: be it Assam, Darjeeling, or any number of choices – a steaming cup of Earl Grey revives one like nothing else. As fond as I am of the varied complexities of malty delicacy, smoky intensity (Lapsang Souchong!) and a plethora of olfactory/culinary delights, the rousing vibrancy of bergamot-inflected tea never ceases to give me pleasure. I have the distinct impression that Master Perfumer Isabelle Doyen and Creative Director Camille Goutal feel similarly: their aromatic impression of post-party madness assuaged by a cuppa prior to retiring in the wee hours after a night’s revelry; sanity and a sense of order somewhat restored after a raucous rock’n’roll evening. Earl Grey levels the playing field, be you dignified or debauched; its jaunty character can suit virtually anyone, and it’s the star of Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll.

Checking in and checking out, oh-oh-oh
I got ’em, wild, wild life
Spending all of my money and time, oh-oh-oh
On too much wild, wild life
We wanna go and we go where we go, oh-oh-oh
Ah, doing wild, wild life
I know it, that’s how we start, oh-oh-oh
Got some wild, wild life
Take a picture here in the daylight, oh-oh
And it’s a wild, wild life. ~
Wild Wild Life, David Byrne of The Talking Heads

Senior Contributor Emmanuelle Varron admirably introduced us to Voyages Imaginaires last year, when she illuminated the concepts and philosophy behind the house. It is not customary for famous perfumers to step outside the usual boundaries and decide to create an all-natural and sustainable line of fragrances. I was particularly struck by the inherent truth uttered by Camille Goutal in the afore-lauded article: “You have to stop believing that a good perfume lasts for a long time”. Composing from an all-natural palette is wickedly expensive, as anyone familiar with the materials is well aware (that isn’t to suggest that certain aromachemicals aren’t costly; many are). A significant portion of the public has come to expect longevity and linearity from their fragrances – and while some naturals may extend the wear, the journey is full of twists and turns as a composition develops. This aspect may require a level of acceptance and adaptation from those new to the perfumed world.

Absolutely everything about Voyages Imaginaires is sustainable – from the dyes, inks, labels, classically refined refillable glass flacons, packaging – you name it. If we look beyond all of this, what remains is simply divine perfume, fin. That’s the bottom line, and the bottom line is beautiful no matter how you look at it.  Voyage Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is delicious, spirited and perfectly soigné. You can be as louche and saucy as a young Keith Richards or as suave as David Bowie in his later elegant phase and it will still hit all the sweet spots. Lashings of glittering bergamot and lime pave the way for maté’s leathery, dried hay cadence gently mellowed by tonka.  Appearances may matter, but in the final analysis, if someone smells wrong to you – the magic isn’t going to happen. It all boils down to chemistry, and Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is a class act which transcends boundaries of status and gender. It’s equally at home in a tux/ball gown or ripped jeans; how many fragrances can make that claim?

Notes: bergamot, lime, maté, leather, tonka

  • It’s wonderful that the house focuses on sustainability and I love that Tea and Rock’N Roll transcends boundaries of status and gender. Bases in the UK.

  • Judging from Ida’s review, Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is a very British scent in essence. It seems Goutal went back to its British roots and drew inspiration from British music and culture. I am in US.

  • The amazing details and interesting information appealed to me in Ida’s review. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Symbian Pandora says:

Been a fan of the Goutal line from many years ago. Eau de Hadrien was one of my first dives into niche perfumery! Would love to smell of a suave David Bowie, Ida has a unique way with words!
Thank you all for a chance in the draw.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love everything about this. Tea is one of my favorite notes and I adore Indigo Perfumery. I hope to tune in for the Instagram Live with Ms. Goutal. Tea & Rock ‘N Roll is now on my to-try list. I’m sure I’ll love it. Indiana, USA

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

Tea is always an interesting note to experience in a fragrance. I love how Ida mentioned how versatile it is, from a tuxedo or ripped jeans. I live in Maryland USA.

  • This sounds absolutely gorgeous! I used to spend a lot of time in England, in London in particular, and the pandemic has prevented me from going back — this scent seems like it might transport me. I also love the house’s focus on sustainability. I’m in new york, USA.

  • liquidasset77 says:

I can imagine this being a tempered yet sultry and provocative perfume, green herbaceous softly entangling mate with a brooding leather accord that elevates the perfume to dignified and mysterious. Can’t wait to smell this.

    Greetings!

I am very interested in “all natural” and “sustainable” fragrances. This really caught my eye. Though I love various synthetic notes: ISOE E Super, Ambroxan, Vetiveryl Acetate, Javanol, etc. I’m fascinated by using things that occur naturally and how fragrance can have the tendency to cross borders and even unite.

I also think that us ‘fragheads’ can be guilty of demanding too much from our fragrances. This idea/demand that our fragrances need to be ‘all day affairs’ does seem to create a rather unreasonable, and dare I say ‘unnatural’ pressure on perfume houses, perfumers, and creative designers.

Overall, I love the look and the description of Voyages Imaginaire’s “Tea and Rock and Roll.” I appreciate the bottle design and presentation (the bottle just looks cool!), the notes (esp. The mate & leather pairing), the sustainable nature of the entire process, and finally the name itself.

Thank you to Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal for this current offering. Thank you Michelyn Camen for the collage and this website. Thank you Ida Meister for this well written and artful introduction.

    Well wishes,

  • Thank you for this wonderful article Ida!

I’m not familiar with Voyages Imaginaries, but Tea & Rock ‘N Roll is a great introduction to the brand. A tongue-in-cheek typical fun and mad kind of character.

As a resident in the United Kingdom I am ever so familiar with the power of a cup of Earl Grey. I enjoy a morning coffee, but a strong cup of ‘Rosie Lee’ is the true reviver. This truly sounds fresh and uplifting and I would love to wear Tea & Rock ’N Roll this Spring and Summer!

It’s great to hear another House focussing on sustainability. These pioneers are leading the way to an inevitable era where this the default business practice.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • It so turns out that Lapsang Souchong and Earl Grey are my favorite teas too and Ida is right on the money as to the qualities of Earl Grey tea. It’s always instructive for me when I see a perfume, or any art work for that matter, with minimalistic design, as seems to be the case with Voyage Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll, which has very few notes, but is delightful per Ida. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

  • punchflower says:

I love the idea of being as suave as elegant David Bowie and as raunchy as Keith Richards. Also the focus on sustainability over longevity is admirable. From US.

  • I do enjoy Earl Grey tea and would love to experience Tea & Rock’N Roll. I liked the use of all natural materials by Voyages Imaginaires. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

  • John McDonald says:

Loved the references to Keith Richards.
The photo from Exile on Main Street era with Gram Parsons was an awesome inclusion.
I can only imagine what those sessions smelled like then with the creative vibe also.
    Amazing

  • Love the name of this one! I agree that good perfume =/= extremely long lasting perfume, at least not necessarily. I became a fan of natural materials because I can be oversensitive to abundant harsh aroma chemicals, so I personally prefer scents that are not too rugged. A few hours is reasonable for me, and then if I want to I get to try another scent for the rest of the day. I am from New England, USA.

  • Ida!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a Fantastic review! I’ve been curious about this house but now that you’ve so eloquently explained much more, I need to discover! ❤️ I love to enjoy and support sustainability! ❤️ Lime and mate are notes I would love! Indigo is so great! ❤️Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity! USA

  • Love your review, Ida. You captured Tea & Rock’N Roll’s essence!

We are honored to have Voyages Imaginaires at Indigo and can’t wait for Sunday’s IG Live. Camille and Isabelle are fascinating to talk with.

We hope to see you on Sunday!

I was already sold on “tea,” particularly Earl Grey. I am intrigued by the description of how this perfume can be dressed up or down. Also a fan of Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen and am curious about this all-natural work by them. Greetings also from New England (MA, USA)!

  • Love the review!!!! Tea is one of my favorite note for spring!!!! Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll Is right up my alley!!!! I’m from USA.

  • Helena Shinkoda says:

Great w! Tea is one of my favorites nore in fragrances specially for spring! It’s always good to hear when a brand uses natural ingredients and sustainable even better. Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is right up my alley!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, USA.

  • Earl Grey snd the Stones are two of my loves so I’m crazy intrigued by this scent. I’m also delighted by Indigo Perfumery’s focus on natural ingredients. Thank you for helping to take care of Mother Earth. I live in Nortidgewock, ME.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I really like the notes and I feel that this could be a big discovery for me. Simple, fresh, easy to like and lovely.

    Thank you!

  • Thank you Camille and Isabelle for adding a sustainable line! I hope it will introduce more people to the ideas of sustainability in perfume and how that might look different from a traditional fragrance. I would be so interested to try this based on the bergamot tea in the notes- it really does sound like it would be at home in any situation 🙂 thank you for the review- writing from the EU.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Voyage Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is delicious, spirited classically refined. I am from Bucharest Romania Europe

  • I great review! I used to be looking for great performance from my fragrances. But lately, since my collection started to grow a little in number i found out that the longevity of a fragrance it is not that important. I mean yes, i want my easy wear to last a long because i will be at work for a long period and then i want to have something special to put on afterwards just for 2-3 hours. I am not accustomed with the note “maté” but this fragrance seems to be something special. I am from Europe.

  • liberation says:

This fragrance speaks to me through its name.. I love Rock/R’n’R, leather jacket, ‘harder’ look, but there is also an elegant, more feminine side…and recently discovered love for tea fragrances. It just seems it would be a perfect fit in Austria

  • Southirina says:

I love the fact that Voyage Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll transcends boundaries of status and gender.
Versatility is so important. Almost like freedom. A perfume like this can help you contain all your personas and feel comfortable whenever you need to shift into a different one.
    Hugs from Romania

  • ANDREEA ELENA TIMOFTE says:

Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll seems to me a perfume that goes in 2 different directions. Tea for me is relaxing time, cosy moment….and then the Rock’NRoll is energy, dance, life.
I am curious to see if I am right about the perfume. I like how Ida found a song to match the perfume with…very nice. I live in London, UK.

  • I really like tea and rock&roll, and so the name of the fragrance is definitely highly appealing to me. On the more olfactive side, I love how Ida described lush moist greenness partnered up with a steaming cup of Earl Grey. The fragrances that transcend boundaries of gender and are versatile have always been up to my alley.
I am completely on board with Camille Goutal’s notion that good perfumes do not necessarily last for a long time. I am glad that Ida mentioned it again. 🙂
Thanks for another great review and generous draw.
    Greeting from Slovenia!

  • lavienrose13 says:

I love tea scents and find it difficult to find ones with exactly the right balance between perfume and drink. Knowing the works of Goutal and Doyen and the motivation that drove them to choose natural parfumery (the challenge aspect more than the commercial opportunity), I am pretty sure this Tea and Rock’N Roll will be a crush for me. The last paragraph describing the evolution of the perfume is particularaly promising. I would love smelling it. I live in the EU (France).

  • It’s trully admirable to create a line that is all-natural and sustainable. What appeals to me was that I’m still looking for my holy grail tea scent. But also that Ida’s review made me remember my first trip in England, whit its pecular atmosphere, and perfect mix of tradition and flamboyance. It’s a very fond memory. From EU- France.

  • Thank you Ida for another great review. As an ardent tea lover having grown up accustomed to a daily cup of black tea, my curiosity gets piqued whenever a tea note is mentioned 🙂 Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll sounds inspired and the idea of sustainability is quite noble. I’m in USA

  • “It’s equally at home in a tux/ball gown or ripped jeans” I love a perfume that can claim that.
Voyage Imaginaires is by far one of my favorite perfume brands

    I live in Portugal.

  • What was appealing was the last descriptive paragraph of the perfume. The paragraph right before the listed notes. US

  • Thank you so much for the article. Reading that reinvigorated my love for a great live rock show. Sadly, those seem to slowly becoming a thing of the past thanks to digital technology. The same with perfumery. All natural ingredients being replaced with synthetic scents. I applaud these women for sticking to the plan and creating a fragrance using all natural materials with eco friendly packaging. It’s a step in the right direction. Every time I smell a tea fragrance I think how much I enjoy it, but surprisingly I don’t own any. A bergamot infused tea sounds really delicious. Thank you for doing a giveaway that is very generous of you and good luck to whoever wins!

  • (Sorry, this is a repeat post to add I’m from Oklahoma, United States. You can delete my original post.)

  • I have never tried anything from this house, but it’s impressive to see their focus on sustainability and natural ingredients. And yes, it doesn’t mean that a good perfume lasts for ever, it depends on how you relate to it and what you exect from it. I particularly enjoyed Ida’s note about being able to wear this one on multiple occasions, this is a win for me. Along with tea and rock’n roll, of course:)
Thank you for the give away. I am from EU.

  • Earl Grey is one of my true-loves. The whole idea of this is fabulous. And I love the naturalness of it. I actually love scents that don’t last too long. Just long enough to shift your mood for whatever comes next. Or, if it is something that I want to last, I’ll just bring it with me and touch it up throughout the day/night. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Ida. I am in the uS.

  • Constancesuze says:

I discovered that I love tea a bit more than a year ago, when I learned that you can add milk and sugar to it. I would also like to be described as soignee, but I think that might be a stretch. Would love to smell this.
    I’m in the US

  • Thank you Ida for great review. I love the notes but since I haven’t got opportunity to try out Tea & Rock’N Roll, I’m really curious how it turn out. Earl Grey whit it’s bergamot touch is my favorite kind of tea, so if this composition recall that aroma, than I’m all in. I hope that a “Rock’N Roll” promise an interesting twist. It’s amazing that the house care about sustainability. I live in EU, Poland.

  • NituNicolae says:

Tea and leather is a combination I would have never thought possible, yet is sounds gorgeous! Excited to try this, thank you for the opportunity! From Romania, EU.

  • I, too, love to find a scent that is at home in anything I wish to wear, although I’m usually in casual attire now. But the options! And everything is good with a dash of rock and roll added in. In maryland.

  • This seems to be such a lovely scent, intimate, classy, a truly amazing experience. Great review! I would love to win this, and i totally agreez longevity is not all, expecially when the perfumer works with high cantity of naturals. Greetings from Romania!

  • GennyLeigh says:

Kudos to Camille Goutal And Isabelle Doyen for creating a line of all-natural and sustainable fragrances. It shows a great deal of creativity to constrain yourself in that way yet still make something worthwhile. I love the concept of Tea & Rock&Roll with the picture of Keef in 1971. The Mate and leather combination sounds delightful. MD, USA.

  • Ida take on Voyages Imaginares Tea & Rock’N Roll reminded me of UK , making , and later eating Old Fashioned English Tea Loaf , and drinking with a small slice of bergamot
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • This looks like a nice mix: mate tea, leather, tonka and some citruses thrown in for a spectacular effect! I already have a picture in my mind on how this is going to smell and I like what I see. I am curious now to test this, just to see if my imagination matches the real smell.
    Thank you! EU

  • It’s important to realize that Voyage Imaginaires is pursuing producing sustainable lines of fragrances. Per Ida’s review this fragrance has a duality that allows it to be worn on a tux/ ball gown and also with ripped jeans. This sounds like a beautiful and complex fragrance.
    Maryland, US.

  • Not much experience with this House. Nice that they focus on sustainability. Also like the presentation. I’ve tried tea fragrances here and there. Gucci Pour II is one of my favorites so far. Interested to try Tea and Rock n Roll. Thanks for the giveaway, Ca

  • Appearances may matter, but in the final analysis, if someone smells wrong to you – the magic isn’t going to happen. It all boils down to chemistry, and Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is a class act which transcends boundaries of status and gender. It’s equally at home in a tux/ball gown or ripped jeans; how many fragrances can make that claim?

Notes: bergamot, lime, maté, leather, tonka. A beautiful piece by Ida I am intrigued by the notes especially mate, leather and Tonka. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • A wonderful piece by Ida I loved the inspiration behind this this fragrance. Curious to know how it smells like on the skin. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Tea & Rock’n’roll sounds absolutely perfect, in a minimalistic way. A cup of Earl Grey captured in a bottle of perfume, with zesty citrus in the top, elegant maté in the heart and an underlying, warming tonka sweetness.
    Would love to smell it.
    EU.

  • Thank you to Ida for the review. The most represented brand in my perfume collection is Annick Goutal. I’m interested to see the direction Camille is taking this new brand of hers. I’m a certain tea lover and am curious about the tea facets of this fragrance. It seems leather would be a good counterpoint. I am also impressed and intrigued by the natural and sustainable focus of this line. Bravo to that mission! Thanks to all involved in offering this prize. I live in the US in Connecticut.

  • Great Review ida, I particulary liked the description of the fragrance and the notes seem amazing – bergamot, lime, maté, leather, tonka! What an interesting combination! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • What an interesting blend of notes – both fresh and yet earthy/woody. I have come across so few fragrances that have any kind of tea note in it so I’d be so interested in trying this. Not to mention, describing this as “It’s equally at home in a tux/ball gown or ripped jean” really caught my attention. I love having a fragrance that be worn for any occasion.
    I live in the US.

  • Ive always loved tea scents and a house that not only have a great sounding fragrance but also focus on sustainability really puts this up on my list. I live in US

  • Jake Dauod says:

I do love the sustainability approach, but I loved Camille Goutal’s quote the most. I really like the notes in this fragrance. It sounds splendid. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

I managed to read the article today and I am happy I was a bit late in catching up with the latest articles, because today is Earth Day so what a better way to celebrate it by reading about a brand that is so careful about sustainability! I could not agree more with Ida on the fact that Earl Grey is just THE king of tea, and I am really intrigued by Tea & Rock’N Roll and its versatility. Would love to be the lucky winner!! Greetings from Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

Ah Ida, what an amazing review, thank you! The most appealing part for me was definitely the statement/ sentiment that Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll can pull off any attire, any circumstances, status or gender and still be appealing, suave and sexy. That sounds like an overall amazing fragrance. Plus, I love Earl Grey with all my heart and can never get enough of it. I am based in Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the fantastic review, Ida.

I loved the idea behind this fragrance. There absolutely is nothing like a soothing cuppa after a long and hard party.

I always find it interesting to seee how tea is used din a fragrancec – in this case, the allusion to Earl Grey and the movement into mate is quite beautiful.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Ida’s review of Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll. A beautiful all natural and sustainable fragrance made from the finest ingredients. A beautiful citrus and tea fragrance with so much depth and complexity with the leather and tonka. I love how Ida described in perfect detail. I would love the opportunity to try this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Fragrances like Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll i like , versatile, natural smelling fresh aromatics. More discreet scents i usually wear, when I’m working with clients at the shop.

  • I want to try this fragrance very much. Earl Grey tea is one of my favorite varieties of tea and lime is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. I want to see what this all-natural fragrance is like. I want to try a fragrance which was made by perfumer Isabelle Doyen. Ida caused me to think that this fragrance is very enjoyable. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Nice review Ida! As you I love Lapsang Souchong and Earl Grey (the star of this perfume), my favorite teas! I first discovered bergamot through the tea, as we don´t have this citrus in Spain. I’m not familiar with Voyages Imaginaries ( but I like the all-natural and sustainable philosophy) and this scent sounds fresh and uplifting and the possibility of feeling a “saucy as a young Keith Richards or as suave as David Bowie” is so interesting. And leather-Mate duo is a win-win for me. I wanna rock this scent! I live in Spain, EU

  • Courtnee D Felton says:

I drink hot tea everyday and sweet tea (a lot of y’all call it “iced” tea) year round. Oolong is my favorite, but I definitely see Earl Grey as top tier. It’s aroma is absolutely gorgeous. As much as I long for a good Earl Grey perfume, I don’t think I’d be mad if it were more than just an Earl Grey fragrance. I like a bit of movement in my perfumes and I’m pleased that Ida describes natural perfumes like Tea & Rock’N Roll as “full of twists and turns.” I’m in Virginia.

  • I’ve seen some people posting pictures on Instagram, but I’m not familiar with Voyages Imaginaires
I have high expectations for Tea & Rock’N Roll , because of Ida’s artsy review, but also because of the nose
Camille Goutal and Isabelle Doyen made the iconic Ninfeo Mio by Goutal .
Isabelle Doyen also composed the almost venerated by a lot of ex- , and current Cafleurebon reviewers Nuit de Bakélite by Naomi Goodsir.

  • I love the Voyages Imaginaires concept of natural and sustainable perfumery, and I can see that being worth giving up some longevity and linearity. Tea & Rock’N Roll is a great concept; I’m surprised the notes list is so concise, and the juxtaposition of citrus against maté and leather is clever. I’d love to try this one—thanks for the review Ida.

  • I like calm and relaxing fragrances. For some remote vacations , walk in the park with my daughter Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll is just perfect.
    Thanks for the draw

  • I can’t say I’m some 2022 modern dandy , or I play the guitar , but I can say Tea & Rock‘n‘Roll checks all the boxes for a pleasing, fresh Spring fragrance , with high compliment factor.
    Nice giveaway, USA

  • Is it just me, or tea, and particularly mate tea is becoming on of the trendiest notes in perfumery lately? It feels like it the new oud
I do admit I di prefer, for the most part loud ,and long lasting fragrances, but there are times for scents like Voyages Imaginaires Tea & Rock’N Roll too .
I miss traveling non-stop back and forth between USA and UK, vacation in Aberdeen would do me good. I also like the addition of leathery touch in the fragrance, making it more unique.

Wonderful review Ida! What appealed to me in Ida’s review is the idea of a rock’n’roll fragrance of revelry and party-hardy attitude that also prominently features tea as the center of the perfume. Usually, tea-focused fragrances are serene, meditative and calm. But as a huge tea aficionado, I feel that tea has so many different facets – including energetic, dramatic, and joyous – so seeing a tea fragrance that showcases those aspects really appeals to me! I live in the US.
