Vilhelm Parfumerie’s latest fragrance, Sparkling Jo, is a vivacious homage to Josephine Baker, the quintessential American in Paris whose life was a blend of glamour, art, activism and war hero. Baker, celebrated for her electrifying performances and significant cultural impact during the 1920s, personifies the essence of this new scent, designed to captivate and enchant from the first spritz.

Josephine Baker thrived on the Vaudeville circuit, a cornerstone of 20th-century American theater, captivating audiences with her dynamic performances. Her journey took her from the vibrant streets of New York City, where she immersed herself in the Harlem Renaissance, celebrating African-American culture and arts, to the artistic hubs of Paris. In France, Baker’s unique dance style and iconic costumes made her an instant sensation. Her performances, rich with African motifs, resonated deeply. Her most iconic act, the ‘Danse Sauvage,’ featured her famously dancing in a banana skirt, encapsulating her flair and cultural heritage. Beyond dance, Baker’s talents extended to singing and acting, leading to significant roles in several European films, showcasing her versatile artistry.

Vilhelm Parfumerie Sparkling Jo erupts with the effervescence of champagne bubbles, a nod to Baker’s bubbly persona and the festive Parisian nights that defined her era. The fragrance’s opening notes of zingy juniper add a crisp, fresh dimension, enhancing the champagne’s sparkle and setting the stage for a truly uplifting olfactory experience.

At the heart of Sparkling Jo lies a delightful pear note, reflecting the current trend of fruit-forward fragrances and adding a mouthwatering, juicy core to the composition. There is an addictive kick of ginger to balance out the sweetness of the pear. This element mirrors the Pear French 75 cocktail, blending the gin’s juniper bite with sweet pear purée, topped with the fizzy luxury of champagne, embodying Baker’s lively and radiant spirit.

As the fragrance evolves, it reveals a softer side with ambrette’s subtle vegetal notes, grounded by the earthy depth of oak and the comforting embrace of soft musks. This transition to a more subdued, feminine finish of sensual ambergris in the last hours of wear reflects the multifaceted nature of Baker herself – from a vibrant performer to a nuanced individual with a rich inner life. While Sparkling Jo invites wearers to bask in its joyful opening notes for as long as possible, it elegantly concedes to the serene beauty of its final accords, much like the ephemeral nature of a grand celebration. I find myself yearning for the effervescent, bubbly start of the scent to persist through to the finish, yet as with many of life’s finest experiences, even this delightful effervescence must inevitably conclude. Its an ideal perfume for heralding the spring season and enhancing any festive occasion, Sparkling Jo by Vilhelm Parfumerie is a perfect olfactive journey into the extraordinary life of Josephine Baker, capturing her indomitable spirit and the joy she brought to the world.

Notes: Champagne, Bergamot, Juniper, Pear, Ginger, Ambrette, Musk, Oak, Ambergris.

This really sounds like a beautiful perfume and really sounds like a celebratory smell. I really like the sound of that champagne note and accord and with my girlfriends birthday coming up this would make a great gift.

My mouth literally watered when I read Olga’s description. I cannot wait to try this fragrance! I’ve tested a few from this brand (at my favorite place for shopping all things scent: IndieHouse fragrances in Atlanta) and I’ve enjoyed them all.

Anytime I see ginger on a fragrance, I know it’s gonna be effervescent and uplifting. I am familiar with Vilhelm a little and I’d say my favorite one is Chicago High. This one sounds perfectly timed for the spring/summer months ahead. I love the Vilhelm bottles as they all look like a fancy glass. Josephine Baker was a vibrant, over the top performer so I’m expecting this fragrance to perform the same and judging by the notes, it will. Cheers from USA.

  • Olya, you have described this beautifully. I’m usually wary of pear in perfume, but this sounds elegant and well-balanced. It seems as if the ginger and ambergris prevent this from being another fruity trend and instead a timeless creation, much like Josephine Baker herself.

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

Wow, what an enchanting tribute to Josephine Baker! Sparkling Jo by Vilhelm Parfumerie sounds like a delightful journey through her vivacious spirit and the vibrant atmosphere of Parisian nights. I’m particularly intrigued by the blend of champagne bubbles, juicy pear, and ginger notes, echoing the effervescence of Baker’s persona. The transition to softer, more nuanced accords mirrors the multifaceted nature of her character. This fragrance seems like the perfect companion for celebrating life’s grand moments. Thanks for sharing this captivating review, Olya! As for Vilhelm Parfumerie, I haven’t had the pleasure of trying their fragrances yet, but Sparkling Jo has definitely piqued my interest.

  • Champagne opening and more sober but intersting dry down with a tempered fruit joy in the center? Sounds awesome! I have yet to try any of the other Vilhelm scents but they are on my radar for sure!

  • Poets of Berlin and Basilico and Fellini are 2 of my favorites from Wilhelm.
I love the idea of a sparkling top not in a fragrance.
Any scent with a ginger note is a killer with me.

  • I enjoyed learning about the inspiration behind Sparkling Jo. It does sound like the perfect fragrance to evoke Josephine Baker’s personality. While the champagne note sounds great, I am particularly interested in the dry-down. Olya’s comments about it possessing an “earthy depth” and “comforting embrace” make me want to try it. It does sound perfect for spring, as well. I have tried fragrances from Vilhelm, but not all of them. My favorites are Dear Polly and A Lilac a Day. Thank you, Olya, for the great review, and thank you to Twisted Lily for the generous giveaway. I am located in the USA.

This is a really exciting draw seeing that I got my nose on this one recently on some travels and immediately loved it. The realistic champagne note in the opening is so amazing and its effervescent character really shines through even to when the bubbles die down and fall into this beautiful cocktail of pear, ginger and musks. I could see myself wearing Sparkling Jo every day, being such an easy fragrance to wear but beautiful and unique with its bubbly nature. I love it!

Everything about this sounds lush, sparkling, and effervescent. A vase of ambrette, heart of pear, and opening notes of champagne and juniper! Sounds incredible! I agree as with perfume, not every good thing can last but to appreciate while we have it is the trick. Thank you cafleurbon for hosting this giveaway. I’ve never owned any Vilhelm parfumerie perfumes but have sniffed poets of Berlin and think it smells amazing! From OR, USA

  • I do love a good bubbly scent, and the pear and ginger combo sounds both unique and beautiful. I haven’t yet tried anything from Vilhelm, but I do have a decant of Poets of Berlin incoming. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • I’ve yet to try any of Vilhelm fragrances but I love how Sparkling Jo is homage to Josephine Baker. I would love the opportunity to try this scent for the summer. From USA

  • Trinity33 says:

I would have expected a fragrance dedicated to Josephine Baker to contain a hint of banana but the cocktail vibe of a pear French 75 makes perfect sense. The sparkling champagne and juniper gin notes speak to the roaring 20s in Paris when she was at the height of her powers. I’ve tried Dear Polly from the line. I’m in the US.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I love pear forward fragrances . I tried room service and it is amazing, can’t wait to try this. From PA, USA

  • I enjoyed learning about Josephine Baker and the thriving American ex- pat community in Paris when I was in college. It sounded very exhilarating, much like the effervescent opening notes of Sparkling Jo. The more grounded base notes sound delightful and soothing, and also like a reminder of how exhausting it can be to break down barriers the way she did. I haven’t tried any of their perfumes yet. Thanks and hello from CO, USA!

  • Josephine Baker was my mom’s idol. Growing up she had paintings of her in a few places in our home. Of course routinely watched the biopic staring Lynn Whitfield and everything so reading Olya’s review makes me think this is a fragrance she would wear. I imagine her leaving from putting on a show and catching a whiff of this pear and ginger and bubbly scent.

I do own a few from Vilhelm. My favorite is Mango Skin.
    I live in Dallas, TX

  • y1NYang69 says:

Wonderful description and characterization of the fragrance! I think the pear note and comparison to the Pear French 75 cocktail make this sound very appealing. Would love to sample this. I think sometimes a pear not is a difficult note to blend and have smell natural. From the other Vilhelm Parfumerie offereings, I have tried morning chess and mango skin. Love from NY!

  • I didn’t know the fragrance was named after Josephine Baker! I have tried basilica and fellini which I adore!

  • foreverscents says:

The champagne and ginger notes in Sparkling Jo are such a match to the exuberant and sparkling life of Josephine Baker. I remember watching a biopic of Josephine Baker in the 1990s with Lynn Whitfield. Now I want to read more about her life while wearing Sparkling Jo.

  • Sounds absolutely gorgeous! I remember being introduced to the French 75 cocktail by a good friend years ago. This sounds right up my alley and I would love to try it. I’ve tried Poets of Berlin and Basilico – really enjoyed them both! I’m in the USA.

Thanks for the great review Olya.

It was a lot of fun to read up on Josephine Baker’s larger than life story and persona.

This fragrance, with it effervescence, fruit forward notes and spicy zingy ginger to reign it in really keeps the idea of her life in mind.

    Cheers from WI, USA

A delightful review of Sparkling Jo by Olya Bar. What strikes me about this review is the scent journey the reader is taken on with the sequence of notes. I can imagine how the scent evolves; from the champagne bubble notes ending in a “feminine finish of sensual ambergris”. I am intrigued by the life of Josephine Baker based on this review and will go research more on her life. I’ve yet to try a scent from Vilhelm Parfumerie, hoping this will be my first from this fragrance house! From TX, USA

  • Thanks Olya for the beautiful review.
