Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig Review (Jerome Epinette) + Impossibly Chic Draw

 Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig review

In his own words, the photographer Slim Aarons was known for “photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places.” After he was awarded a Purple Heart as a WWII combat photographer, Aarons moved to California and began capturing photographs of socialites and celebrities like Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and Gary Cooper—anyone with a taste for “la dolce vita” (the good life). Aarons’ photographs are windows into a seemingly manicured world where there are no tan lines and parties were very well attended. Regardless of the setting, everyone was dressed (or undressed) to the nines.

I imagine many Slim Aarons photographs somehow smelled of Purple Fig by Vilhelm Parfumerie, which opens with a refreshing blast of glorious, tantalizing green. It beckons with a flirtatious look over a bare shoulder, then sweet, heady jasmine wafts in and melds with a juicy fig. Like Slim Aarons’ photographs, Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig is impossibly glamorous and perfectly chic—flawless, but never boring.

Vilhelm Parfumerie  Purple Fig could have been all bewitching jasmine absolute and juicy fig, a pairing that might seem old-fashioned or potentially soapy. But Jerome Epinette and Creative Director  Jan Vilhelm Algren decided to sweep aside your preconceptions by adding top notes of Sichuan pepper and angelica seeds. Then, they put galbanum at the heart of Purple Fig, which again might sound like it could add a retro feel, but instead that galbanum brings in a subtle edginess. In Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig, notes that you thought you knew take on new dimension. Alongside jasmine and galbanum, fig suggests the coiffed sultriness of an attractive dinner party doyenne in her attractive home, surrounded by other attractive people. This is not to say that Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Purple Fig is a particularly gendered fragrance—anyone can wear it, particularly as the vetiver and woods come forward in its drydown. The only risk in wearing Purple Fig is that sweatpants might suddenly feel underdressed—but as Slim Aarons said, “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” Perhaps this scent could even elevate loungewear.

Figs are a delicacy. The window of opportunity to eat a fresh, tree-ripened fig is limited and the fruit will not ripen further after it has been picked. When fig trees’ leaves or branches break, or when the fig is unripe, the stem releases a milky white sap called “fig latex,” which has a green, bright odor. A ripe fig’s skin is velvety, and the inner fruit texture is soft. Its juice has an almost floral flavor that perfumes the inside of your mouth. In fragrance, fig is often used for scents that smell clean and soapy. It can have an association as a “home fragrance,” with several brands offering popular fig-scented candles and other home goods. In Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig, however, it’s the floral and green aspects of the fig that are expertly drawn to the forefront. The floral feel of fig juice is enhanced by the jasmine. The galbanum is suggestive of a bright green fig latex. Though the fragrance is called Purple Fig, it is predominantly an unexpected and strikingly beautiful mélange of jasmine, fig, and galbanum.

By the mid-1970s, Slim Aarons’ photographs had fallen out of fashion. The opulence and glamor of his wealthy subjects in their homes, on their yachts, and in other fabulous locales had become perceived as decadent and outdated. Around the turn of the century, however, there was a resurgence. Fashion designers began to mimic Slim Aarons’ photography style for their ad campaigns, and Getty Images, Inc. purchased the Slim Aarons library for a small fortune. By now, you have almost certainly seen a Slim Aarons photograph in your Instagram feed or on a coffee table—and you were probably struck by how relaxed and attractive his subjects looked. Though the hairstyles are sometimes a bit dated, the settings are timeless. They engender nostalgia for places you’ve never been, and for people you’ve never met. As it happens, Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig is also a timeless classic. Though Purple Fig was released in this century, many of its notes would have been familiar to and welcomed by the fabulous people in Slim Aarons’ photographs. But, Purple Fig smells very gloriously here and now, and even more perfect for a near-future of socializing that’s on our horizon.

Notes: Sichuan Pepper, Angelica Seeds, Galbanum, Green Fig, Jasmine Absolute, Vetiver, Cashmere Woods.

  • As soon as I read the name of Slim Aarons, I knew this is the photographer behind that famous swimming pool picture at the Kauffman house. Dalya says Purple Fig emphasizes the floral and green aspects of the fruit. I am in US.

  • I just googled Slim Aarons photos and I want to be lounging around looking glamorous and chic instead of waiting to wear my nice clothes for zoom meetings. I own a bottle of Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico and Fellini which I first read here which is also fig. I would love to win Purple Fig based on Dalya description of galbanum and jasmine. USA
    Great art too

  • foxesandfigs says:

I love the idea of being “flawless but never boring.” I love fig scents and think this one sounds extra interesting.

  • I love that early 1960s high society aesthetic. Sure the clothes and hair are dated, but these people knew how to enjoy themselves. Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig sounds like a sophisticated but fun androgynous fragrance. The fruit from the fig and the galbanum provides a green framework to the jasmine. I’m intrigued by the addition of the angelica and sichuan pepper. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I enjoy fig fragrances, and it was nice to read about the different aspect of fig. Also, how jasmine and galbanum enhance the fig note to make this unique spin on fig.

  • you got my attention with Purple Fig. My favorite color is purple and I adore figs. My last house had a fig tree, haven’t gotten around to planting one in my new house. My favorite gift at Christmas was the 2.5 pound bag of figs from my son that he dried himself. Sadly I have already eaten the whole bag. I did not know about the milk white sap. I like that the green aspect is brought to the forefront. Love that photo of the desert house, vaguely have memory of people wearing those fashions. I have not smelled anything from this house and only own one fragrance with fig. This one sounds phenomenal. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Dalya, what a fantastic review, and I am smitten with Slim Aarons photos, they are still so very chic to this day! In reading your description of this fragrance, the notes and my knowledge of M. Epinette’s other work, I can definitely tell this is as timeless and chic as that collection of fabulous photos. I am also a fan of delicious juicy fresh figs, a rarity and a delight. I’ve smelled several fig frags, and yes, they lean soapy, but the fact that this pulls the green and floralcy out, it must be fantastic and blows the other fig frags out of the water!

Thank you to M. Jerôme EPINETTE for his wonderful artistry and to Euro Perfumes for their excellent customer service and the generosity of this draw.

  • I love that I often learn about more than perfume from these lovely reviews. I wasn’t familiar with Slim Aaron’s photographs before but, they have such a timeless elegance to them and knowing that this is how Dalya feels about Purple Fig, I can’t wait to try it. A dear friend gave me a complete sample set from Vilhelm Parfumerie just the other day, I’m going to have to test this one out immediately. Thank you for the draw. US

  • I would totally wear Purple Fig in sweatpants. It’s my belief that angelica is an underrated note in perfumery, nice to see it pointed out here.

    Thanks for the drawing.

  • I always learn something new here at CaFleureBon. Thanks for featuring pictures by Slim Aarons. I do seek out juicy figs when our local markets have them. I’d love to try Purple Fig with its wonderful notes. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Carlos De La Torre Jr says:

The descriptive writing and story telling is what captures me. I love fig fragrances so I need to try this.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

I never had the opportunity to smell something from the house . I woul love to be on the winning end of this one .

  • I enjoyed fig in fragrances like Carber Barcelona Fig Man and Acqua Di Parma Fico Di Amalfi. Purple Fig sounds wonderful. Ive never actually eaten a fig but as always learned something from the review about the flesh having a floralcy. Id love to try this fragrance that the glamorous people in these Slim Aaron’s photos would have seemingly enjoyed based on this great review. From CT USA. Thanks for the generous draw as always.

  • The vibe and characteristic of the time Slim Aarons’s photos was a very interesting stylistic time. Timeless classic is always a good thing, and belonging to that eccentric time is quite nice. I would love a great classic fig fragrance.

  • Oh, I love Slim Aarons! I have many of his coffee table books, and I love the idea of a scent that smells like his images! I love the scent of figs, but I keep looking for a fragrance that uses it in a more refined, elegant way. Maybe this will be the one! I don’t have any bottles from this house, but I’ve always admired how beautiful their bottles are. I’m in NYC.

  • Well, I could sure use some of that timeless glamour. Sadly missing from this past year! Funny, I’ve been to Kearny Mesa many times but it’s a pleasant surprise to find out it may contain some glamour… I have not tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie scents yet. (California)

  • I’ve heard this beauty leaves you feeling like you left a jazz club. sign me up. I really want to try morning chess. thank you for the opportunity. USA

  • The imagery alone described in this gorgeous review makes me want to smell of Purple Fig and attend a party at the Kauffman Desert House- poolside! Have never tried anything by Vilhelm but this sounds fantastic. I adore jasmine scents and the thought of fig and jasmine with spiked with galbanum and pepper sounds intriguing. Love Slim Aaron’s work… love Jerome Epinette’s work. Would love the opportunity to try this scent. Thank you!

  • Her description of the fig itself made my mouth water! I love fig scents and this doesn’t sound dated to me, it sounds like a classic and modern merger. The pepper note sounds interesting as well. My favorite fragrance from Vilhelm is Poets of Berlin.

  • “Figs are a delicacy. The window of opportunity to eat a fresh, tree-ripened fig is limited”
It depends where you live, and also with the unbelievable progress of bio engineering, and hybridization, in a few years we’ll have figs all year round.
Purple Fig reminds me of eating fig leaves half baked Ricotta, while sitting on a field of green grass.
I do know one Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance called Mango Skin, just a sample but still. Love the smell, and taste of mango , and i had to try it. One of the best ripe mango fragrances on the market. It also smells natural.
Appreciate Dalya review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Fig is definitely one of my favorite notes in perfumes. Yes, it is not a real note, but it is still amazing and I love it. One more great review by Dalya. I like her intro and parallel she draws with photography. I never feel that fig fragrances are similar to home goods products like she mentioned. I especially like that Dalya says this one is green and enhanced by jasmine, which I also love. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I loved how Dalya threaded Slim Aarons’ photography with Purple Fig the fragrance. This is a very creative way to think about this fragrance. It feels elegant and classic. I would love to try. Beautiful writing. I have never sampled any of the Vilhelm fragrances but have heard so many great reviews about them! Thanks for the chance. USA

  • The aspect that drew me in was not having heard of Slim Aarons so I’ll look him up. I didn’t know this house existed until today so no favorite. US

  • Anthony Bianco says:

I’ve smelled a few perfumes that feature a fig tree accord, and have always wished for a realistic fresh fig fruit note to be mixed in with the green leaves and sap. I’ve yet to try a Vilhelm fragrance, so I’d love to opportunity to do so with Purple Fig. Warm greetings from California!

  • I enjoyed Dalya’s review of Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig. I liked the fact that it’s not a soapy perfume, but more floral and green. I am not familiar with Slim Aaron’s photography, so it was interesting to learn of his photography, and how the perfume reflects the culture and times of that era, while being a timeless classic. Not familiar with fig in perfumes either, so that makes it all the more interesting. I haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie perfumes, yet, and would love to try this one, for its novelty as well as timelessness. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

DALYA! Welcome to Cafleurebon; I’m a big fan. So far, your reviews have been fantastic.

From Dalya’s lovely review, besides the fact that I like Fig frags already, his bit about the fragrance inspires my interest in this fragrance: “Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig could have been all bewitching jasmine absolute and juicy fig, a pairing that might seem old-fashioned or potentially soapy. This is not to say that Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Purple Fig is a particularly gendered fragrance—anyone can wear it, particularly as the vetiver and woods come forward in its drydown.”

My default favorite Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance is Morning Chess, since its the only one I’ve tried.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Dalya’s description of the duality of the fragrance’s glamorous, retro feel but modernized was something that stood out to me immediately. Something I would love to smell & wear in today’s times.

  • Thanks for the review! You make it sound so glamorous and fun at the same time. I’m in the US and crossing my fingers.

  • I would love to sniff Purple Fig with the ideas from this review in my head.
I love many Vilhelm frags, my favorite is poets of berlin

  • I simply love figs and been looking for the perfect sweet and juicy fig in fragrance. I think it is the perfect note for a winter fragrance. Warm, exotic, relaxing and gourmand, a fig has everything to create a perfect summer mood in a cold winter day. CA, USA

  • Love this review although I haven’t had the pleasure of owning anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie, I have to say that after reading the notes I’m particularly interested because of the fig notes but also because of sichuan pepper and angelica Seed add ons. Great review and thank you for the opportunity to enter the draw. Commenting from Orlando,Fl

  • I received a spray sample of Purple Fig in my Luckyscent order and left it for days untouched. Delightful scent and the analysis and vibe in this article is spot in. I won’t leave this brand alone again. Thanks for the push! Comment from NY, USA.

  • Constancesuze says:

I haven’t tried many from Vilhelm but I love fig in life and in perfumery (Philosykos is a favorite). Old Hollywood is another interest of mine, and while I’d heard the name Slim Aarons, I hadn’t seen many of the photographs. Thanks for the introduction!

  • Dalya describes this as a new take on these classic ingredients. And I would love to feel like a totally put together, effortlessly chic woman. I have not tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances.

  • Fig is a note I love in perfume and this one sounds really good. The addition of jasmine to the fig sounds very yummy. I love the tie in with the Slim Aaron photos that Dalya used. I’ve always loved those iconic photos and the glamourous era they represent. I have been eager to try Vilhelm Parfumerie but have not yet. This one sounds a good place to start.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds fantastic! I love fig and jasmine and the addition of pepper sounds awesome. I had a lot of fun googling Slim Aarons’ photos but I do not remember what it feels like to dress up. I use my fragrance to dress up these days in jeans and t shirt. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love this fragrance. I think Dalya does it justice comparing it to Slim Aaron’s photographs. The fragrance possesses something classic, but has a timeless feel to it as the perfumers have really tried to give it an edge. Great review!

  • I was first introduced to fig fragrance by Diptyque’s philosykos and L’artisan Parfumeur’s Premier Figuier. To a nose like me, I was not able to tell the differences. Then I wandered into Paolo Terenzi’s fig territory with Vele. All of those have brought me the experience of greenness and milkyness aspects of fig. But with the touch of sichuan pepper in Purple Fig, I am sure it is a brand new dimension.

  • It was just last week that I added the Slim Aarons coffee table book to my summer wish list; what a delight to see his work drawing comparisons to a perfume from Vilhelm Parfumerie! If Purple Fig evokes even one bikini’s worth of the old school glamour in Aarons’ photography, I’m sure it is absolutely wonderful. Sichuan pepper, Fig, and Jasmine together sound like a fun composition. I’m wearing a sample of Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Poets of Berlin today, and my favorite from the house is Room Service. I would love to try Purple Fig. Thank you from the US.

  • I’m interested in the classic implications of this scent. I like the addition of the green notes. While I don’t have a favorite Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance, this sounds like something I would like. Many thanks for the review and many thanks to Vilhelm Parfumerie for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • Kateryna Plesiuk says:

That comparison of the photographer’s works to a perfume was something that I did not come across before. What would Helmut Newton’s works smell like?
I do not have a fav Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance yet since I did not try it, but I would love to!

  • The Jasmine and the juicy fig makes this fragrance sound like a nice refreshing scent for the upcoming spring along with the pepper to give it a little pop. I didn’t mind if the fragrance comes off a little soapy since I like soap fragrances. I haven’t tried any fragrances from this house yet.

  • Sophisticated fragrance with fig , greenness, vetiver , Happy Fig screams class , a bit mature maybe? Or it’s just my association with fig-green fragrances.
I’m in tailoring business, and I would gladly wear Happy Fig with a suit , while working with clients at the shop.
Yes i have not only tried, but later bought Vilhelm Parfumerie Morning Chess. As usual the reason was Sebastian Jara review for Cafleurebon.
Thanks Dalya, Sebastian’s partner in crime 🙂 Of course I would like to also thank Europerfumes for the opportunity.

  • I felt glam just reading Daly’s review. I love the way Çafleurebon writers introduce such interesting cultural and artistic information in their reviews. I have seen photography by Slim Aaron, but I haven’t read much about his career and inspiration. I often get a glamorous feeling with fig perfumes. Also galbanum. I haven’t tried anything from Vilhelm Perfumerie.
    I live in the USA.

  • I do own a number of fig-dominant fragrances, both emphasizing the milky and fruity sides as well as a green aspect. I have tried several Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances, and purchased (and absolutely adore) Basilico & Fellini, which contains a milky fig note. CONUS

  • Dalya’s description made this sound like a marvel of creativity, of pairing a fig note with other unexpected ones. I like the distinction she made between the aroma of ripe figs anda that of unripe ones and the greenery around them. It made me curious to smell the difference. I have never tried a Wilhelm perfume, but they always sound expensive and sophisticated. I am in the US, in NC.

  • Fragrances in the same ballpark as Purple Fig i really appreciate. Green fragrances done the right way , with juicy fruityness just work in those days i want to be alone, and have a walk in the park, or drinking Tea on the porch.
I’ve heard about two Vilhelm Perfumery fragrances, Dear Polly and Morning Chess , and wanted to try them in my local Barney’s, but after the bankruptcy it wasn’t possible.
Good thing is they work with Europerfumes .
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Beautiful review with lovely Marilyn Monroe.
I like fig in perfumery- so “bright green fig latex” with jasmine sounds amazing!!

Thank you for the beautiful review Dalya.
I must thank your review for the wonderful introduction to Slim Aaron’s photography. His work captures the time of an era that has past in, in much the same way that this perfume does. The review shows that the fragrance posseses much of a lost style (like coiffed hair) using timeless ingredients.

I haven’t had a chance to smell a fragrance from this house.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I am interested in trying this fragrance. Dalya’s article made it seem like this fragrance would be a good way to become familiar with the better fig fragrances. I would like to see how all of the notes work with each other. I haven’t tried anything yet from Vilhelm Parfumerie. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Don’t love Fig fragrances yet but still searching for one. I’ve tried a few so far. I’d like the chance to try this fruity green fig. Morning Chess is another Vilhelm I’ve tried and it was a nice scent
    Thanks, Ca

  • Thanks to Dalya for the introduction to Slim Aaron’s photography! So cool, now I am down the rabbit hole looking at more and more.. but back to the review and yum fig and galbanum and Sichuan pepper. This sounds amazing- though cannot promise that I wouldn’t wear it in sweatpants.. thanks so much for the fun review and giveaway- haven’t tried this house but would love to. Commenting from NY.

  • Michael Prince says:

What inspired my interest in Vilhelm Parfumerie Purple Fig based on Dalya’s review is how this fragrance is being described as being very classy and timeless worn by an older generation of people who projected that vibe and lifestyle, but this fragrance is also modern, appealing, and wearable by todays standards. I am also a big fan of fig in fragrances so I would love to try this one. My favorite Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance is Morning Chess. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • I love Dalya’s idea of pairing this perfume with the work of Slim Aarons, especially because the brand always seems to have such evocative stories being each of their fragrances. I own and love Smoke Show and would be thrilled to try this one! Writing from Maine, USA.

  • Judging by the comments, I’m one of the very few familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie. I know all, but 2 2020 releases . Skin X and Chicago High are the only two , I’ve not yet smelled.
Now one important clarification i have to make about Purple Fig. The current version is not the same , like it was when it came out. Back then inspiration behind it was some tragic Royal love story , that ended with the death of one of the lovers. In the original one there was no jasmine i think , but a lot of cassis. It was also a bit boozy with hints of red wine. Lady in Vilhelm Parfumerie customer support by the name of Erika confirmed the reformulation .
Nowadays version of Purple Fig is more green and fresh , less sweet and fruity , and booziness is gone. More like cousins, rather than twins.
It smells natural, I think more of a spring and summer fragrance.
Guys get some samples, and try Vilhelm Parfumerie, they have quite a few gems .
Poets of Berlin is my favorite one.
Thanks for the opportunity, all profiles I already follow .

  • Vilhelm Parfumerie unfortunately i do not know personally, but Poets of Berlin perfumer I’m well aware of. Jerome Epinette is well known for his fresh, really pleasing authentic, smelling like a real deal scents.
Fig fragrances are awesome for the upcoming season, I’m getting tired of the cold weather lately. Purple Fig sounds cheerful and bright , right what I need at the moment.
Please review more Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances, I’d love to know more, especially Chicago High and Mango Skin.

Great article, Dalya! I love the imagery that is used to connect the fragrance to the photographic style of Slim Aarons (whom I’d never heard of, but went and had a look at some of his photographs after reading this post). Purple Fig sounds absolutely stunning, and any fragrance with a descriptor of “glamorous” peaks my interest. I’ve not yet tried anything from Vilhelm but would love to try this one. Thanks for the introduction to this fragrance and to Slim Aarons! Located in the USA.

  • Green Fig is my kind of fragrance. Being a barber my love for green , fresh and spicy aromatics comes naturally.
The fruitiness of the fig , and the sap of the tree smell are more than welcome . Versatile fragrance i can wear on all occasions.
I’m not familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie, I need to finally get some samples.
