Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis

Francis Bacon’s art is a dance of contradiction – chaotic yet controlled, raw yet refined. It’s in this complex interplay that Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis finds its muse. Like Bacon’s paintings, the perfume is a layered composition, a narrative told through olfactory notes that evoke the same intensity and depth found in his canvases. An olfactory rendez-vous with our deep emotion.

The mid-20th century travels of Francis Bacon to Morocco offer a fascinating glimpse into his life and the inspiration behind the fragrance. During this period, Bacon frequently visited Morocco, drawn there by his longtime partner, Peter Lacy, who had made Tangier his home in the 1950s. At that time, Tangier was renowned for its avant-garde culture and lifestyle. It was celebrated as a hub for many liberal, artistic minds, attracting creative and forward-thinking individuals worldwide. Bacon, like many others, found himself captivated by Morocco’s allure. His summers in Tangier were times of joy and inspiration, the smell and taste of smoked pistachios with a salty brine of the sea in the midnight air. The depth of the woodsy aromas surrounding him everywhere was both relaxing and invigorating. His few surviving works from the time he spent in Tangier, imbued with candid, almost photographic poses and muted color palettes resonated deeply with the tones of contemporary newspaper prints. Bacon was in a period of fervent experimentation, subject, and style, culminating in 1957 with a dramatic pivot to vibrant coloration.

Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis opens with aldehydes and aromatic saffron dancing around it – a bold, striking introduction reminiscent of Bacon’s initial strokes on the canvas. Vibrant, daring, and filled with raw potential. A representation of Bacon’s unapologetic art, where danger, violence and even death constantly linger together. Transitioning into the heart, toasted pistachios meld with juniper wood and driftwood, creating an aromatic bridge that transports you to Bacon’s memories and travels. Like his art, these notes form a complex yet harmonious blend, evoking Tangier’s rich, earthy tones and the rugged, elemental beauty of a Mediterranean volcanic island. It’s an olfactory journey through the artist’s past, where each scent note is a stroke of color on his palette.

The fragrance settles into a base of resinous oud wood, savory sweet ambergris, and bold smokiness of cypriol. These deep, resonant notes embody Bacon’s profound exploration of the human condition. They are the dark, shadowy depths of his paintings, the textured layers of emotion and raw energy that give his work its haunting power. In particular, the oud wood and ambergris evoke the intense, visceral experience of viewing Bacon’s art. There’s a primal, earthy quality here, just as in his depiction of flesh and form.

What makes Bertrand Duchaufour’s work so captivating and why it was on my Best of 2023 round up list, is his ability to parallel the experience of Bacon’s art through scent. Each layer of the perfume unfolds like a chapter in a story or a phase in the artist’s creative process. The top notes are the initial inspiration, striking and unmissable. The heart notes represent the journey, where memories and experiences blend. Deep and enduring, the base notes are the final expression, leaving a lasting impression, much like Bacon’s haunting canvases.

Like Bacon used color to convey emotion and create mood, Bertrand Duchaufour used scent to evoke feelings and memories. The transitions between the notes are seamless yet distinct, like how colors blend and contrast on a canvas. Two artists are creating in different mediums. The warmth of saffron, the earthiness of pistachio and woods, the abyss of oud and ambergris – each note is a color in this fragrant painting, coming together to form a portrait of the artist himself. In a sense, Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis is a continuation of his legacy, a new medium through which his spirit and creativity continue to inspire and captivate.

Notes: aldehydes, saffron, toasted pistachios, juniper wood, driftwood, oud wood, ambergris, cypriol, vetiver, pyrogenic styrax.

My favorite thing about fragrance is the story they tell. Whether it is be about a place, person, or the abstract. My favorites are those that evoke personal memories for me. I look forward to Bertrand Duchaufour’s expression of Bacon’s art in this creation 🙂

  • Fascinated read. I had wondered how one could interpret Francis Bacons work into an olfactory piece. They can really go into the abyss as your article mentions. Knowing it was inspired by his time in Morocco makes this much more intriguing and I could see how these notes would play so well off of each other. Pistachio,Saffron and cypriol ? Yes please. It sounds like a gorgeous olfactory portrait.
Please enter me for your draw, I love in the US. ☺️

I’ve never tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie, but for a while now I’ve been interested in trying their fragrances. Faces of Francis sounds like a fragrance I’d like to try. Bertrand Duchafour is one of my favorite perfumers, and I’d like to see how he uses the ingredients mentioned in the notes listing. I want to experience its base when Olya describes it as: “a base of resinous oud wood, savory sweet ambergris, and bold smokiness of cypriol.” I’m very intrigued to try Faces of Francis when Olya describes it by saying: “The warmth of saffron, the earthiness of pistachio and woods, the abyss of oud and ambergris”. I’d love to win a bottle of it. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Ramses Perez says:

Bertrand DuChafour is truly one of the best perfumers and he’s particularly perfect at making gourmand style fragrances. Pistachio is starting to make a big splash in fragrances and it’s sure made its way to Faces of Francis. Vilhelm is a house I’m not too familiar with but this one is sure peaking my interest in the whole house. Olya described it as being vibrant and colorful so I’d love to try this one. Cheers from NJ.

Such a nice article & I’ve been so excited about this fragrance ever since I heard about it a few weeks ago! — I love the connection to Francis Bacon. The book I read some months which made me feel really amazed by Bacon, his paintings, what can be found in them is Deleuze’s Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation.
I’d love to enter the draw; I live in MA in the USA.

  • I love Bertrand’s work. Always so creative, so it is perfect that he captured this artist in a bottle. Warm saffron with the earthiness of the pistachio sounds amazing. Seems like pistachio is continuing to have its moment. I love that it isn’t an ice cream type of pistachio. The artwork in this article is beautiful. I actually was testing a sample of the Basil based fragrance this morning, the name escapes me at the moment. I had heard that some people detect a hint of car tires in Faces of Francis, happy to hear Olya makes no mention of that. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Vilhem is a house that I know little about. However, I have heard some good things about a few of their offerings, such as Poets of Berlin and Darling Nikki. From what I am gathering from Olya’s review, as well as others I have read, Vilhelm seems to take the storytelling side of perfumery quite seriously. That is something I appreciate greatly. I have stated time and time again that I adore the transpotive nature of fragrance, but the next most important facet to me is the adventure. I love it when I can relate to a scent through its story, it’s universe, it’s fantasy. As someone who has very recently started to explore and fall in love with pistachio as a note, I would love to see where Faces of Francis might take me. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • The way Francis Bacon used color to differentiate emotion and create mood, Bertrand Duchaufour used scent to capture memories and feelings. The way this perfume represents Bacon’s unapologetic art, where danger, violence and even death constantly work in unison sounds interesting. I’ve never tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie although I’d like to. Thank you for the opportunity. New York, USA.

  • I do not have a pistachio scent yet in my collection.
Wilhelm seems to have unique notes in their scents.
I have Basilico and Fellini in my collection. It is one of my favorite summer scents.

  • I enjoyed reading about Bacon’s summers in Tangiers. Smoked pistachios, saffron and juniper wood notes in Faces of Francis sound fantastic to me. Thanks for another wonderful article and draw. Mich USA

  • I love fragrances that take you on a journey…and I love the way Olya ties the journey this fragrance takes you on to Francis Bacon’s life and art. I haven’t got my nose on a Vilhelm scents yet. Perhaps this will be the first! I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Love that in the heart of this fragrance you have toasted pistachios meld with juniper wood and driftwood. Also love the comparison of the notes to the painting. The top notes striking and unmissable. The heart notes where memories and experiences blend. The base notes deep and enduring.

No I’ve never tried Vilhelm Parfumerie.

  • What intrigues me about Faces of Francis is the connection to Morocco – a place I once visited and that continues to haunt me – and the comparison to a painting, with a different scent or memory to each stroke of the brush. I would love to win this bottle and am in the U.S.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I loved the contrast between the deep complex smells and viewing visual art. Very cool. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

  • What an intoxicating fragrance.. Francis Bacon‘s love letter to Morocco and also a painting of his past. So cool to hear that this perfume was inspired by his time in Tangier in the 1950’s and how that was the hub to so many progressive people and artists like himself.
The opening with the aldehydes and saffron sounds so beautiful. The bold, smoky and resinous finish being the reflection of the layers and textures of his paintings, often times deep, dark and symbolic. The transition of all these exotic, beautiful notes capturing the colors of his paintings. I’m captivated, Olya!

  • What a neat story Faces of Frances tells; I remember my time in Morocco, although it was spent in Marrakesh not Tangier I still recall similar alluring experiences that I found my senses to be constantly surprised and inspired by the aromas and mystery of that beautiful country. Hearing the notes of this fragrance being a symbol of the paint strokes in his work, I can imagine the artistry and depth this perfume possesses. Those notes of saffron and toasted pistachios I bet are just perfectly blended with all its other facets, true to this magnificent line Vilhelm Perfumerie fosters.

  • I would love to try something with the smell of saffron! I have nothing like that in my collection. Thank you so much for the giveaway – I am logged in and registered! I live in the US.

  • Vilhelm Parfumerie I’ve heard, but unfortunately I have no experience with. Faces of Francis perfumer on the other hand I’m familiar with. Bertrand Duchaufour is well known for pleasing , and authentic smelling scents.
    Woody spicy and leathery fragrances
are awesome all year round, not just for the cold weather we have right now .Faces of Francis sounds cheerful and artistic , right what I need at the moment. I like the saffron, toasted pistachios and Moroccan connections.
Please review more Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances, I’d love to know more, especially Chicago High , To My Father and Mango Skin.

  • Vilhelm is a favorite! Would love to smell this scent. Love saffron fragrances! Might make a trip to Dallas from Oklahoma to smell some fresh f these great finds.

  • Art is a beautiful thing because you can be expressive and make it as obvious or complex as you want, while also being easy to take in. In perfumery, it takes even more creativity when you can convey a story through scent. Bertrand Duchaufour Is definitely one of my favorite perfumers and I always enjoy wearing a piece of his art. I haven’t tried anything from this house yet but they’re definitely on my list.

  • Really interesting review Olya. Francis Bacon is such a seminal visionary mid-century artist. I can see why he would be a great muse for a fragrance. A trip to Morocco wouldn’t be complete without scents of saffron, pistachio, oud and dry woods. I’m a fan of Bertrand Duchaufour and would love to try this. I’m in the US.

  • David Furman says:

From what I gather this sounds like a dark, deep, and resinous goodie. Never have owned or smelled any Vilhelm frags but I’ve heard nothing but great things. One I heard was photo realistic is London Funk. I was surprised when I saw oud wood in the note breakdown because I didnt associate this house with alot of oudy options. Please let me win so I can expand my horizon and hopefully fall for a new house. Fingers crossed, from Jacksonville, NC.

  • I love this house, and the name Francis has a special place in my heart, Bacon’s art is of course incredible… and as far as the notes?! Toasted pistachios youve got me already! But add in juniper, vetiver and how the Oud and ambergris was described and I’m all yours.
In California thank you for the chance!

I’m a fan of francis bacon’s work, and the passion and struggle represented in his art. I’m interested in seeing if this perfume keeps the edges of his work. USA.

  • great article & I’ve been so excited about this fragrance ever since I heard about it a few weeks. — I love the connection to Francis Bacon.

  • Love that pistachio note and the description of the heart “Transitioning into the heart, toasted pistachios meld with juniper wood and driftwood, creating an aromatic bridge that transports you to Bacon’s memories and travels. ”
It isn’t often you find a fragrance that has pistachio notes in it, and that alone, makes me want to try it!

I love how Olya gave the background information about Francis Bacon and his time spent in Morocco. She also explained so wonderfully and vividly how Bertrand Duchaufour evoked the colors of Francis Bacon’s works through scent. What a master he is to be able to convey an artist like Bacon through Faces of Francis.
I haven’t tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie.
    I live in the USA.

  • As a brief tangent from Faces of Francis, that photo of a street in Tangier is wonderful! This perfume sounds excellent too, combining a range of aromatic woody notes—aldehydes and saffron flowing into pistachio and juniper (intriguing pairing), and then a rugged, smoky base. This also sounds a little challenging, asuming the earthy dosage of oud, ambergris, cypriol, and saffron are strong, though they all sound well blended and in service of the theme. Plus that bottle is great. Would love to try it.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances.

  • Everyone needs a place to retreat, and clear up their minds. Olya review brought me to Tangier in Morocco having a walk in the Spring . I have no idea what the atmosphere in the 50s when Francis Bacon regularly visited the city, my impressions are from 8 years ago.The so called White City style , nature and cuisine are beautiful and inviting.
Quality fragrances like Faces of Francis i like a lot. The base of resinous oud , savory sweetness and smokiness is quite alluring.
The only Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance I’ve smelled is Mango Skin , my younger cousin owns a bottle , beautiful ripe tropical fruits and patchouli fragrance
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • I’m well familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie. I know all except for the latest edition Sparkling Joe . If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1. Chicago High
    2. Poets of Berlin / To My Father
    3. Mango Skin / Faces of Francis

“During this period, Bacon frequently visited Morocco, drawn there by his longtime partner, Peter Lacy, who had made Tangier his home in the 1950s. At that time, Tangier was renowned for its avant-garde culture and lifestyle. It was celebrated as a hub for many liberal, artistic minds, attracting creative and forward-thinking individuals worldwide.”

Not exactly, it’s a very complex topic , to say the least. Tangier during the time period was not part of Morocco, but part of the Tangier International Zone, from 1925 until 1956 , basically international zone of various sectors in theory controlled by a committee of 30 countries, but basically France, Spain, Italy, UK and US (after 1945) were calling the shots. During the WWII it became a safe place, and transitional hub for the Jewish community fleeing persecution , Spaniards fleeing Franco’s Spain because of political repression and military tribunals. In the early 50s Tangier became also a magnet for a expats, writers are all kinds artists , from Paul Bowles, Matisse, Tiffany and apparently Francis Bacon and Peter Lacy. Due to its international (almost) tax-free zone status Tangier was the biggest grugs smuggling port in the world, drugs were basically free, Heaven for criminal money laundering and all other of similar matters activities. No wonder William S. Burroughs wrote “Naked Lunch” in Tangier, if you know literature, you know what it’s all about. To end up my Tangier in the 50s rant I’ll just say that “Anything could be bought at a price” was the thing that sums it up.
Back to Vilhelm Parfumerie and Faces of Francis, my opinion of the fragrance is not the same compared to what Olya is getting. I don’t know if it’s my body chemistry, but the fragrance is much sweeter on my skin , I don’t get anything salty , on the contrary aldehydic opening, and then Faces of Francis turns into candied pistachios, honey, a bit of smoke and comforting leather. I really like it , but completely different reasons compared to Olya. To me also Faces of Francis smells like a cousin to Baklava, another fragrance composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, less sweeter, more smoky and with leather.
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

I loved Olya’s review of Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis. This relatively newer release has been getting a lot of positive attention in the fragrance community. I loved learning about artist/painter Francis Bacon and the inspiration behind this fragrance Faces of Francis and his travels to Tangier, Morocco. This sounds like another amazing creation by Bertrand Duchaufour. The only creation I’ve tried from Vilhelm Parfumerie is Morning Chess which I own. I am from the USA.

Thanks for the fun review Olya.

This is a very different fragrance for the brand and Bertrand Duchaufour has used a fascinating palette of scents to capture Bacon’s memories of his travels. The use of saffron and aldehydes, oud and resins and that wonderful toasted pistachio note all make this sound like a fragrance that could possibly take us as well on this exotic journey.

I have not had the chance to try this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The interpretation and juxtaposition between art and scent is genius. I’ve been impressed by samples of Poets of Berlin and Mango Shin, so would be happy to win this created by Duchaufour. US

  • Fragrances in the same ballpark as Faces of Francis i really appreciate. Deep woody resinous and vibrant scents with done the right way , they just work in those days i want to be alone, having a walk in the park, of my favorite way to relax, drinking Tea on the porch , and eating pistachios.
Never been to Tangier or any other place in Morocco, but I’ve sampled Dear Polly,Morning Chess , and Poets of Berlin all are really nice ,still I prefer Poets of Berlin, I even bought a bottle last Summer.

  • Olya Bar take on Vilhelm Parfumerie Faces of Francis was so laid back, I imagined being in a Tangier , making Moroccan Pistachios and Orange Blossom Cake and later on having a walk on the streets of the beautiful city
I do know one Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance called Mango Skin, just a sample but still. Love the smell, and taste of mango. It’s one of the best ripe mango fragrances on the market. It also smells quite natural .
