Creative Director Ulrich Lang of Ulrich Lang New York began creating his sophisticated, pleasurable line of fragrance in 2003.Those among us who have been around for a while met him in 2011 at Elements Showcase, a venue for international brands (Jovoy Paris, Neela Vermeire Creations, and Stéphane Humbert Lucas all exhibited there in early days). Ulrich Lang was always the Ringmaster of Ceremonies, making introductions and gathering like minds together – for which many of us continue to be thankful.

Suncrest is the ninth fragrance in Uli’s collection, and it is a carefree breath of solar optimism, guaranteed to put a smile on your face and jauntiness in your stride. The beauty of Ulrich Lang’s aesthetic lies in its versatility and wide appeal: like the creative director himself, you would be hard put not to like them. Suncrest, in particular – suits any and every occasion: if that happens to be formal, then you are flawlessly elegant and unfussy; if it is worn casually, Suncrest’s tonicity and bracing good humor fill the bill with unstudied bonhomie.

Ulrich Lang New York Suncrest fruits, flowers, and woody notes conspire to meld tangy, fleshy, and gilded tones with a solidly sylvan base; it’s a winning combination. The choices of fruit couldn’t be more different. Peach notes are so honeyed, pulpy; black currant is a little devil, combining mouthwateringly tart characteristics with a dash of sweetness, a wine-like quality, and an animalic subcontext. You are able to discern each, and yet they form a perfect partnership. Sicilian lemon offers a delicious pucker, sunny and welcoming. A dulcet lily of the valley note is wed to jasmine – and they perform a tender duet in which neither overpowers the other; it’s rather silken, in fact. Firmenich’s Dreamwood™ provides a sustainable alternative to Mysore sandalwood, imparting a creamy texture which is beautiful in tandem with cedarwood. And while Ambrox (also by Firmenich) is not among my favorite olfactory materials (because it is frequently wielded in sledgehammer fashion), it is utilized very effectively in Suncrest’s base, with just enough woody amber aplomb to ground and heighten the fragrance’s tenacity while extending its wear. The overall effect is playfully refined and unrestrainedly lovable – and it lasts all day long.

Simplicity and noteworthy design are emblematic of the Ulrich Lang New York line, and Suncrest is particularly stunning, thanks to Japanese American photographer Will Matsuda. In radiant hues of ripe tomato red, deepest violet, and charcoal, the eye is drawn to its compelling packaging – which is open to one’s own interpretation, as contemporary art often is. Such thoughtful attention to detail enhances our sensory experience: both jus and box are timeless and captivating.

‘When I bring sweet things to your greedy hands, I know why there is honey in the cup of the flower and why fruits are secretly filled with sweet juice’. ~ excerpt from Gitanjali 62, by Rabindranath Tagore

Notes: peach, black currant, Sicilian lemon, jasmine, lily of the valley, Dreamwood™ (Firmenich), cedarwood, ambrox (Firmenich)

My bottle was a gift – many thanks!  My nose is my own…

I liked how Ida mentioned that this fragrance suits any occasion, both formal and casual. Also, both playfully refined and unrestrainedly lovable. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I found it intriguing when Ida pointed out that this fragrance effortlessly complements any event, whether it’s a formal gathering or a laid-back hangout. From KC go chiefs!!

  • Oh my heavens, this sounds like such a gorgeous fragrance.
Thank you for the review, Ida. Fruity, fresh, woody, floral…all things I adore.

I LOVE fragrances with notes of fruits on them, never smelled peach on a fragrance before but with all the other notes complimenting the peach. I just can imagine wearing it and being happy.

  • I love thats for all occasions. Lemon note is beautiful. Also the flowers that follow. Really curious about the whole creation. I’m from eu.

  • Love learning history of brand. Ida did a wonderful job describing the notes. Love a fragrance that can be wore for all occasions. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • The design language of this perfume is like nothing else, I love it! It has the stunning note of jasmin that is so pure and calming. These facts really appealed to me. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • The way he described the notes coming together to make a beautifully honeyed, fruity and wood fragrance!

  • This perfume has a beautiful esthetic and wonderful notes that sounds like it’s a “can’t go wring” but not “easy grab” hence boring. Ida knows her onions. I love in NY and thank you for the opportunity to try.

  • “Solar optimism”: I like the sound of that! I always feel sad as we leave the summer months, and I imagine a perfume like Suncrest could bring a touch of summer into my life during any season. Thanks for the review and giveaway.

To begin with, the bottle is a visual treat – I’m a fool for minimalism, and here, the almost cool transparent clashes with the bright red in the most beautiful contrast. Only looking at the bottle and an iced glass of water with red berries came to mind :).
The scent sounds perfect – if it suits every occasion and if you have to work hard not to like it.

I am always looking for versatile fragrances for a new signature scent, and Ida’s mention on its versatility has me intrigued. Suncrest has an very appealing list of notes, and with black current not being as readily available in the US it has me interested in its impact on the overall scent profile.

  • For the genre fruity floral I hardly get excited, because most of the times it’s just a non descript melange of, well, fruits and flowers; boring and hard to evoque anything.
Reading this review, it doesn’t seem to be the case here, as the chosen fruits could complement each other. Lilly of the valley is one of my favorite flower smell, so I would be eager to see it what the end result looks like.
I like the simplicity of the bootle, it’s very minimalist and beautiful.
    I am in the EU.

  • Ulrich Lang New York Suncrest seems like a cheerful composition that is suited to all occasions and has lot of sides such as fruity, floral, and woody. I am in US.

  • It is thrilling for me to see this bottle among myriad of other launches. Its unpretentious minimalism and its wide embracing name tells me it may have a potential to be a signature scent.

  • So beautiful article – I enjoyed it.
It was interesting read about Uli.
And even from first sentence of description of this perfume “…breath of solar optimism, guaranteed to put a smile on your face and jauntiness in your stride” – I felt with optimism. I and maybe we all need a solar optimism and piece of happiness in this days.
The beautiful ingredients pyramid promise positive vibes too.

  • Nice review Ida! Quite a figure Mr. Lang must be! So great to know that his perfumes are as inviting and friendly as his creator. Suncrest is Solar, Suncrest is Radiant. After the beautiful pic of Will Matsuda, the scent tends to Red, like a saturated photo. A fleshy, fruity/floral scent: first the fruits: peach, currant and lemon, then the white flowers: jasmine and lilly of the valley to end with a woody amber base with the Dreamwood™that I didn´t know was a sustainable alternative to best indian sandalwood. Smile on my face after reading the review! I live in Spain, EU!

I thought the peach fruity note was unique and interesting. Sounds like a great fragrance I would love to try one day.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Suncrest is a fragrance about happiness and is expressed through fleshy pulpy fruits, notably peach, black currant and Sicilian lemon blended with solar flowers jasmine and lily of the valley.

  • I adore Ida’s description of Suncrest as melding “tangy, fleshy, and gilded tones with a solidly sylvan base. It tells me all I need to know about experiencing the fragrance on skin. The fruits sound unctuous and well employed. The florals are subtle and although I do like Ambrox, I’m glad to see it’s judiciously used here. Suncrest sounds well-blended and universally appealing. I’m in the US.

  • Never tried anything from Ulrich Lang, but I am always up to testing fun fruity floral fragrances. The combination of peach and jasmine does sound like something I could easily enjoy.
    Thanks

  • Regis Monkton says:

I would definitely like to try Ulrich Lang New York Suncrest. I can like fruity fragrances, and black currant is one of my favorite fragrance notes, e.g. Amouage “Imitation Woman” is one of my favorite fragrances. I’d like to experience the contrast between the peach and the black currant. Also, I want to see what the fruitiness is like in combination with the floral and woody aspects. For a while now, I’ve been interested in trying fragrances from Ulrich Lang New York, but I haven’t had a chance to yet. I live in the U.S.A.

  • It seems like a gorgeous fragance! I would love to try this solar peachy parfume, it seems a good way to finish the summer. Im in the EU.

  • The range of fruit notes Lang used here are interesting and represent three wholly different attributes. Suncrest also seems to be using synthetic materials effectively; a restrained application of ambrox and a creamy combination of Dreamwood™ and cedarwood. I’m curious how this fragrance progresses—I hope the multifaceted fruity opening lasts a bit, though the woody base notes sound calming and easy to wear. Classy packaging too. Thanks for the review, Ida.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Fantastic review here by Ida.
Ulrich Lang got me off guard here. I always enjoy descovering new fragrance houses and this one is surely a great one.
Suncrest looks like something I was needing in my life.
I love the fruity notes that it provides and how they all can be discerned each. I love peach in my fragrances so this one I am sure I will adore. I hope I win this one.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appealed to me about Ida’a review of Ulrich Lang New York Suncrest is how she describes this fruity, floral, and woody fragrance. The fleshy Peach, tart Lemon, and duality of the blackcurrant seem to interact perfectly in this composition. I own Apsu from the brand and love it’s realistic and natural nature. I would love the opportunity to win Suncrest. I am from the USA.

  • I like how Ida described the peach note as honeyed and pulpy – sounds so realistic and delicious! I’d love to win a bottle. I’m in MN, USA.

  • HAJ THAMI Anass says:

Notes of fruits woods that sounds like my favorite combo.
I would love to get my nose on this one

  • this sounds really nice – the notes all together, and not overpowering. I like that you don’t have to reserve it for special occasions. I’m in the US.
    thank you for the review!

  • and he had been partial to fragrance since his early Swabian childhood

Ida made me smile, maybe it’s because I moved to Germany, or it’s because Swabian in Germany goes with some wild, loud and passionate stereotypes , like Texan in US 🙂 It seems like
Ulrich Lang is Swabian living in NYC, unique encounter if you ask me.
Suncrest is a happy fragrance made for the warmer Spring and Autumn days . Ida Meister contribution , and the delicious quote from Rabindranath Tagire are like a walk in Munich with a bowl of peach and black currant gelato.
    Thanks to all involved

  • Thanks for the great review Ida.

This is a really cool fragrance (especially as we are entering longer periods of darkness) that makes use of so many disparate elements in a harmonious manner. Sweet ripe fruits, tart berries, citruses, white florals leading to a creamy sandalwood, sounds like a tropical party to my mind.

Thanks for bringing this fragrance to our notice.

    Cheers from WI, USA
