Top 10 Valentine’s Day Perfumes by Steven
For me, Valentine’s Day is one of those “Hallmark Holidays” targeted by marketers to induce you to send cards and to give gifts, often flowers and chocolates. I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day since, like New Year’s Eve, it feels forced. Whether you are spending February 14th with a lover, partner, friends or on your own, in Steven and my part one co-curated Top Ten Valentine’s Day perfumes for 2023, we chose five fragrances that feature three ingredients known for their romantic and sensual qualities: chocolate, rose and musk. – Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
Throughout history chocolate has been touted as a stimulant, to prepare for war and as an aphrodisiac. Chocolate contains some of the chemicals produced by the brain when we fall in love, which might be one of the reasons it is so popular as a gift for Valentine’s Day and such an addictive note in perfumery. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
Montale Chocolate Greedy smells terrific… like chocolate cake in liquid form. It is so rich you think you must have eaten the whole thing but you don’t have a stomach ache. – Steven and Michelyn
Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir was composed by Harry Fremont and Jacques Cavallier for the Private Label Collection in 2007 and like all the fragrances on this list, smells great on both men and women. It is sweet, chocolaty, and flavorful. Rose, saffron, and truffle enhance the blend while adding to the sensual personality of the perfume. –Michelyn and Steven
Strangelove NYC MeltMyHeart (Christophe Laudamiel): This fragrance lives up to its name. It is my number one choice, because wearing MeltMyHeart REALLY melts my heart (and anyone around me every time I wear it). I wore the EDP on a date recently, and it must have been my perfume that prompted him to say, “Let’s skip dessert!”, (I sent him packing, but he keeps sliding into my dms). The dusty cocoa¸ an overdose of buttery orris (one of the most expensive ingredients in the world) and ylang feel plush and creamy and are intertwined in a sensual (sustainable) oud embrace. More important than pleasing others, it reminds me that I wear perfume for myself. I feel more “me” wearing it, and that is everything you can ever want-Michelyn
The Empress Josephine Bonaparte loved musk and used it abundantly—so much so that the walls of her boudoir retained the smell for decades. Legend has it Napoleon wrote her in a letter, “Home in three days, don’t bathe.”- Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
Ramon Monegal Atractone Musk (Ramone Monegal) 2022: “When I wear Attractone Musk it’s the law of attraction, desire and a connection with life that is communicated via myself.”-Ramon Monegal. Attractone Musk attracts either on its own or layered with other perfumes. There is a sultry quality to this gorgeous musky floral. Red hot at the top, the jasmine is carnal and indolic, the sweetness of kiss is hinted at with the red lipstick vibe from raspberry but wait there is an ocean breeze moving in until the “my skin but better dry down” of a mélange of musk. Notes include Ozonic, Aldehydes, Baies rose, Cumin, Cashmeran, Jasmine, Lily of the valley, Lilac, Cyclamen, Sandalwood, Musk cocktail, Amber, and Raspberry -Michelyn
Rogue Perfumery Rostracto (Manuel Cross) 2022: There are roses… and there are roses gone rogue. Rostracto was one of Sr Editor Karl Topham’s TOP TEN Perfumes of 2022, so it seems fitting I quote from his review, “imagine the contrast of caressing a rose’s velvety petal then being caught by the spitefulness of its thorn.” If you are a fan of neo-vintage fragrances especially those where only the finest quality ingredients are used, Rostracto is a must for Valentine’s Day… or any day. This is Steven’s #1 pick. Notes include: Bulgarian Rose Absolute, Fir Balsam Absolute, Artemisia, Benzoin Resin, Charred Cedar, Musk–Karl, Michelyn and Steven
