Taking inspiration from traditional Japanese Kabuki and the concept of “hidden beauty”, Tokyo based perfume company Tobali has created a mysterious and haunting perfume called Spring Snow. Tobali is a Japanese word created over 1000 years ago to mean “…a cloth used to hide something, or hanging silk used to divide a space and offer concealment. Being hidden by a veil, allowing only glimpses to be seen, both increases the appeal of what lies on the other side and sublimates that attraction. Therefore the name “TOBALI” was chosen.” -Tobali Perfumes

In Kabuki tradition female roles were almost always portrayed by men. The hidden beauty in Tobali Spring Snow alludes to Nakamura Utaemon VI, arguably one of the most famous Kabuki actors whose female characters were thought to be the ultimate expression of femininity.

He was devoted to an image of beauty transcending that of gender, and when he passed away, it was on an illusory day very much befitting the life he had led; with the spring cherry blossom in the full bloom in the garden amid a powdered scattering of unseasonable snow. Tobali Spring Snow is described as “Calm concealed in grace” and is a perfect metaphor for this allusive and compelling fragrance. It’s what you don’t immediately see, but rather glimpse through gentle snowfall that creates the beautiful aura surrounding this scent. Categorized as an incense and woody perfume, it is so much more than that. Spring Snow is the iron fist in the velvet glove; presenting a perfect feeling of yin and yang, strength and tranquility.

Created in 2017 and presented in an all-white bottle shaped like a Japanese Mino-ware alter-offering container, Tobali’s Spring Snow presents like the wafting breeze lifting the wife’s veil in Kurosawa’s classic film Rashomon. The gentle spray of Spring Snow on my arm feels light and airy; a puff of powder from a lover’s boudoir, but cool as snow drifting; a gauzy layer of soft cherry blossom enrobed in a late spring snow. A woody incense is lightly burning in the background, hinoki, cedar-like notes, and precious sandalwood drift and mingle with the tranquil mix of dancing snowflakes and yellow blossoms. It’s an addictive complicity, this mix of Ukon Sakura, reminiscent of cherry blossom trees laced with the rich sandalwood and musky amber. It brings to mind strength and softness at the same time. The cashmere wood wraps the fragrance in the quiet still of meditation, and the presence of the oudh adds a scented umami that creates the beautiful and untroubled depth of Tobali Spring Snow leaving the wearer with a wondrous and other-worldly perfume.

Notes: Ukon Sakura (Turmeric-Colored Cherry Blossom), Creamy Powdery Snow, White Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood, Vetiver, Musk, Amber, Hidden Japonism 834 (Oudh-Centered Notes).

Disclosure: Thanks so much to Europerfumes  the US distributor for Tobali for Spring Snow. The opinions are my own.

Spring Snow looks interesting, inspired by Japanese arts. The notes include sandalwood, musk, and cashmere wood that I enjoy. Japanese fragrances can be discreet and this one also seems like it is not overly loud. US

  • Spring Snow sounds like it would be a powdery ethereal fragrance, with hints of cherry blossoms. Lovely! For me, everything carries it's own beauty. Look, feel, smell, taste, hear anything long enough and you will find something beautiful within it. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • Hi Robert!!!! The hidden beauty is the best beauty. It is worth finding and isn't flashy or seeking attention. This fragrance sounds like that. I'm interested. In USA, sir.

  • I love the explanation of "tobali" – it's true that by the obscuring an object does make it more alluring. The simplicity and stillness of the fragrance sounds lovely. It would be perfect to wear when you are coming off a heavy-hitter winter fragrance bender!

I would be so happy to win a bottle of Spring Snow. Thank you for the chance.

  • I am very attracted to this concept and I like how the bottle looks! Unfortunately  I can't enter because I am in Germany. Good luck to the rest

Robert's review has really made me want to try this fragrance now! The bottle is stunning too. I am in the USA and having my own share of "spring snow".

  • Would love to win this addicting complicity with the creamy powdery snow note. US

  • I had never heard of Tobali perfume before but I really enjoyed knowing what they stand for. I have always loved  kabuki and think hidden beauty is found in unlikely places like on buses, woods or even your own mind. I love the cherry blossom and incense. Thank you for introducing me to 10 Corso Cormo in NYC

i live in Connecticut and will make a trip

  • This one sounds gorgeous.  Cherry blossoms, incense, sandalwood, these are a few of my favorite things.  Robert has a wonderful way of evoking scent in words.  I am in the USA.

  • Jake smith says:

Sounds gorgeous I love cherry blossom! I haven't tried anything form to Ali yet but this sounds like a good place to start! Incense and sandlewood are among my favorite notes even if they are in the background I would love to see how they pair with the cherry blossom and I am also very interested to see what the creamy powdery snow note is like. Even just looking at the notes it sounds like it captures the scene perfectly! Thank you for the description and giveaway! I am in the USA in AZ

  • Definitely sounds amazing! Light fluffy snow in spring with cherry blossoms out sign me up! Thank you for the lovely description! I am in the USA

  • Just Add Light says:

I always resonated with Japanese tradition, being a practitioner of the martial arts; so the juxtaposition of cherry (my favourite fruit) with sandalwood is an ideal combo for me.  Robert's description of the yin and yang feeling and burning incense in the background also makes it an ideal scent for meditation.  Transcendental indeed.  USA.

  • I love the elegant way beauty is represented here.  Feminine and soft.  Spring Snow is a perfect name for how this fragrance is described.  I am ready for Spring and Spring Snow!  🙂  In the USA.

  • doveskylark says:

I lived in Japan for many yeats and I always loved the distinct–yet over so subtle– fragrance of cherry blossom season. And when a rare snow fall occurs during the blossoms…..well, it's  just the most beautiful view one can ever hope to see. I miss Japan and the way beauty lies in shadows, like on a rainy night in an alley inGinza, or a hot summer day with deafening cicadas.

    I live in the USA,

  • Not only do I love the notes and overall aesthetic of this perfume…I love Robert's review! It's not every day I see someone make a correlation between an intriguing scent and an Akira Kurosawa film! It's honestly a treat to see my two of my favorite things – niche perfumes and old samurai movies – brought together in a lovely juxtaposition. Ironically enough, I was also very recently watching kabuki performances by Nakamura Utaemon VI on youtube! So, needless to say…this review speaks to me in an almost eerie way!

As for my thoughts on "transcendental beauty"…well, they could take up way too much space here. Transcendental beauty is something I look for not only in everyday life..but, in my perfumes. So in regards to perfume – I specifically seek out scents that go beyond "this smells beautiful." It's special to find a fragrance that can take me to another place, another time, or invoke deeper thoughts.

Thanks for the chance to get my nose on this! (I'm in the USA.)

  • This sounds lovely and the bottle is so nice. I like the sound of a gentle snowfall . Thank you for the draw!

  • Spring Snow's incense and soft powder notes suggest a very calm and meditative perfume. I'd love to try this beauty. (USA)

  • Spring snow and Japanese cherry blossoms are such a beautiful sight to see…magical and mesmerizing. The notes of this creation sounds like a beautiful expression of a powedery, calm and sedative experience in relaxing love. I live in CA, USA.

  • Always been fascinated by the Japanese culture, history and cuisine. I already knew only males can perform in Kabuki theaters, but nonetheless the review of Spring Snow I really enjoyed. Nice job by Robert Herrmann. Ad a orthodox Christian I’m used to woody incense smells. I actually love the smell. Thx to all involved in this giveaway. USA

  • What beautiful photos! This fragrance sounds so ethereal and feminine. I love the note of cherry blossom.

    I live in the USA.

  • This definitely sounds like the perfect perfume for spring. I also love the all-white bottle and the way it’s shaped. The review was well written and described the notes in details. As for transcendental beauty, it’s nice to see the good and beauty that is beyond just the surface.

    I live in USA.

  • RoseMacaroon says:

Well there are multiple aspects to live here: the note list just sounds luscious. What I'm so appreciating here thougb is the comparison to a specific transition in the seasons, and this tie-in with kabuki, about which i am wholly ignorant, intrigues me to the point where i am going to be reading up on it this weekend for sure. I've just in the past few months started to branch out into genres of performing arts i haven't looked into before, so I'm really very grateful for this additional input. It would be pretty impossible to express myself in this format on the subject of transcendent beauty, so i will just limit my remarks here to my obsessions with music, dance forms, and fragrance aa synonymous with my endless fascination for it. I'm in the US, and again, many thanks for this very artful review.

  • The bottle is beautiful and the fragrance sounds wonderful the cherry blossom with woody incense notes sounds great. Also I haven't got to try oud in a fragrance yet but would love to this was a great review definitely has a way with words. Sounds like poetry almost!
