The Different Company After Midnight

While conventional cologne is traditionally reserved for daylight hours, Luc Gabriel, The Different Company’s co- founder and creative director, in collaboration with perfumer Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann, sought to transcend traditions and create a cologne-style perfume that would gracefully adorn the nocturnal hours. After Midnight’s essence evokes that night time allure, enveloping those who encounter it in an intoxicating embrace, twisting conventions with mastic and benzoin blurring the encounter so it falls between styles, almost like a meeting of two spirits soon to be one.

The Different Company After Midnight instantly made me think of Richard Linklater’s 1995 film “Before Sunrise.” In it we’re introduced to two captivating individuals, Jesse and Celine, who possess a unique blend of intelligence, sensitivity, and curiosity. They find themselves together on a train in Austria, where their paths intertwine in a serendipitous encounter. As they engage in conversation, a profound connection forms, igniting a spark of attraction between them. Both in their early twenties, Jesse, an adventurous American armed with a Euro Rail pass, is en route to Vienna to catch a budget-friendly flight back home. On the other hand, Celine, a French student studying at the prestigious Sorbonne, is making her way back to Paris. As they delve deeper into conversation, a wild idea takes hold of Jesse’s mind – why not invite Celine to disembark with him in Vienna? They could spend precious moments together until he departs for his flight.

The structure of After Midnight seems to fit beautifully with the unfolding of the film’s narrative; opening fresh and wide-eyed Jesse and Celine’s first interactions are full with that classic neroli fresh greens, soft woods and bergamot giving that bright sparkle we all know from classic eau de cologne style perfumes, there’s a herbal twist from angelica giving both this strange confidence to go forward with this night time adventure in Vienna.

Before Sunrise movie still Richard Linklater 1995 via IMBD

Like The Different Company After Midnight, this scenario in the film, unfolds in a manner that is both enchanting and tender. Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” captures the essence of a love affair for Generation X, yet Jesse and Celine transcend the confines of their generation, defying the mundane expectation of perpetual boredom. The film mirrors real life, resembling a documentary with an invisible camera, as it follows their meandering journey through the streets of Vienna, from the late afternoon until the break of dawn. Remarkably, Jesse and Celine encounter no interruptions or disturbances along their path, as their conversations traverse a wide range of topics, from the complexities of familial relationships to the enigma of death, from reminiscing about past romantic entanglements to contemplating the implications of a world with more souls than ever before. Quiet like how a perfume can take you out of the busy world into your own private thoughts. Linklater’s dialogue possesses a peculiar charm, exemplified when Jesse playfully suggests that their time together can be likened to “time travel,” prompting Celine to ponder the mysteries of her future and the people she will encounter.

Their encounter feels like timeless exchange, yet also unique, quiet like how the eau de cologne structure is given its own unique twist as mastic brings out this fresh balsamic facet, along with more soft musky blonde wood aromas. It also adds a little tension, that playful date night conversation where the two might not see eye to eye, yet there’s some whispers of wild flowers with a little cinnamon spice hinting at desire, still sparkling with bergamot while slowly getting sensual and soft with a tender iris. It’s a very soft iris, like eyes meeting across a table and melting looks when the gaze is held too long. There’s this almost floral incense like feel as the iris and labdanum blend into this cosy, Zen-like powdery veil that enrobes the perfume.

There’s an undeniable spark of desire between Jesse and Celine, and Linklater delicately navigates it, allowing it to unfold naturally. In the comforting confines of a music store’s listening booth, a magical moment transpires. Their eyes meet, but quickly avert, as if afraid of being discovered. The way they execute this dance of glances – the perfect timing, the subtle blush of embarrassment – captures the essence of authenticity.

Before Sunrise movie

In “Before Sunrise,” Richard Linklater crafts a captivating tale that transcends the boundaries of traditional romance. Jesse and Celine’s story is a testament to the power of human connection, reminding us that sometimes, the most extraordinary moments can be found in the simplest of conversations and the most unexpected encounters.

In The Different Company After Midnight Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann does similar, crafting captivating tale, delicately navigating its composition, giving us this tender end with an amber sweet soft iris that gently haunts the skin with a gentle resinous depth from benzoin. It’s almost like the scent of a lover is left lingering on your skin, as After Midnight turns to light in the early hours of a new day. It still whispers of bitter greens, a slight remorse that this adventure is over, but you can always start over by spraying it again. The Different Company After Midnight is a beautiful adventure, telling a subtle and delicate tale of love at night.

Top notes are Neroli, Bergamot and Angelica; Middle notes are Iris, Jasmine and Mastic (Lentisque), Cinnamon; Base notes are Labdanum, Amber, Benzoin and Woody Notes.

  • What sparked my interest based on J’s review is how The Different Company After Midnight takes you on a beautiful adventure, conveying a subtle and delicate tale of love at night. I’ve never tried anything from The Different Company. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • The tale of love this fragrance can make me imagine really sparks my interest. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU. Tokyo bloom would probably be my favorite but After Midnight is something really unique and special for sure.

A movie inspired fragrance sounds interesting to me. I love the idea of a scent taking you on a romantic night time journey. I never heard of this fragrance house, definitely interested in trying it out.

  • I enjoyed how J tied the movie storyline to the development of the scent over time, which was such fun to read. Should I win this, I will need to wear it while re-watching the film. I love so many of the notes, I’m sure I will enjoy the perfume. Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • My interest was first sparked by seeing how purple this is. I can’t say I have a favorite TDC but I enjoy several. US

  • Apparently I missed a very good movie. I think mastic is underused in fragrance. I love to cook with it. I believe I have 2 fragrances with this note. Neroli is a new favorite of mine. I’d love to win this and wear it while watching “Before Sunrise”. My fave from the line is still “I Miss Violet”. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I absolutely adore how J highlights the perfume “After Midnight” by The Different Company, drawing parallels with the film “Before Sunrise.” Both the perfume and the movie evoke a sense of connection, romance, and authenticity, making them perfect companions for a memorable night. The description of the perfume’s notes and its ability to tell a subtle and delicate tale of love at night are particularly engaging.

I also like how the structure of the perfume’s development mirrors the unfolding narrative in the film, emphasizing the enchanting and tender aspects of both. This comparison really showcases the perfume’s ability to capture the essence of a love affair.

J’s article piques my interest by linking the perfume to a beloved film and highlighting its ability to evoke genuine emotions and experiences. So poetic and deep… love it!

My favorite perfume from The Different Company is Rose Poivrée.

    Greetings from the EU (Germany).

  • I really like JWearescentient reviews here and on Instagram. The tie in to the movie Before Sunrise and a chance meeting was fascinating. My favorite TDC is Une Nuit Magnetique.

  • Well, we all could use a romantic evening. I like the mention of a floral incense within this fragrance. Thanks for another wonderful article and draw. Mich USA

  • The way J describes how the Iris and amber melt makes me think of a kiss on a mild night in St Louis I’d had years ago, the same time that “Before Sunrise” was out.

I e only experienced the dark vanilla of Majaina Sin from The Different Company. I thought it was sexy, but just wish it pushed out a little stronger.

Oh, yes, the Before Sunrise trilogy, so beautiful! <3 Being described as the scent of a lover left lingering is enough to gets my interest highly. Everything about it sounds beautiful. Thank you for this review! My favorite from TDC is Jasmin de Nuit, I stumbled over an old bottle and I've been obsessed with it this past year. I'm currently in Romania Europe.

I like how the scent “whispers of bitter greens”, as bitter is an integral part of life, as much a sweet.

  • Choosing this line as my favorite In “Before Sunrise,” Richard Linklater crafts a captivating tale that transcends the boundaries of traditional romance. Jesse and Celine’s story is a testament to the power of human connection, reminding us that sometimes, the most extraordinary moments can be found in the simplest of conversations and the most unexpected encounters.
If we link this to what a fragrance can make us feel, it’s totally accurate, sometimes a simple thing like a perfume spray can give us an extraordinary moment full of memories …

The Before series is one of my all-time favorite series of movies. I remember watching Before Sunrise in the 90’s. I love the idea of a fragrance inspired by this great romance, and wow the notes sounds really lovely and romantic indeed. Beautiful!

Beautiful olfactory narrative film with notes of neroli, angelica, iris caressed by amber with woody notes! I am from EU

  • What a gorgeous, classic blend of notes! Crisp citrus (flowers) in the opening, progressing to iris, jasmine and the quite unusual mastic and then drying down to noble woods and resins. Sounds gorgeous!
I also loved the analogy with the movie. I have to watch it again because I can’t remember much at all, even though the photos and some sequences sound very familiar. I’d like to read more of these “perfume-to-movie” comparisons, they’re really interesting!
    Commenting from the EU.

  • After Midnight sounds so complex and intriguing! I love the description of the drydown with ambery iris contrasted with bitter greens. I’d love the chance to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA. My favorite from The Different Company is Oud Shamash.

  • I remember seeing the Linklater trilogy back in the 1990s. It was such a bittersweet look at romance and Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke were perfectly cast and the young lovers. The Different Company’s After Midnight pays tribute to the movie with it’s amber sweet skin scent and slight bitterness of the greens, I’m in the US.

  • This sounds like a perfect comfort scent for darker weather, actually. I adore soft incense-feel in a scent. I live in the US and my favorite Different Company scent so far is probably Sel de Vetiver, or Ellena’s Boisd ‘Iris.

  • I really love the presentation of this bottle. Something that screams iris low and behold, I was right. The middle notes sound great but I know the overall balance is just right. Would love to have this blue beauty in my grasp. From Jacksonville, NC

  • After Midnight sounds so lovely! I loved the review because I felt almost immersed in the story of two people falling in love. It’s such a tender and romantic description. The note of iris is a favorite of mine. I’m now off to watch this movie! (I am located in the USA)

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to J for the review!

I absolutely love the movie Before Sunrise, so I’m curious to see if After Midnight could convey that same sense of serendipitous beguilement. The combination of angelica and mastic also makes this a very tempting purchase. I’d love to give it a try!

  • “Their encounter feels like timeless exchange, yet also unique, quiet like how the eau de cologne structure is given its own unique twist as mastic brings out this fresh balsamic facet, along with more soft musky blonde wood aromas. It also adds a little tension, that playful date night conversation where the two might not see eye to eye, yet there’s some whispers of wild flowers with a little cinnamon spice hinting at desire, still sparkling with bergamot while slowly getting sensual and soft with a tender iris.” I love how this was written as if it was a date, well done! I was really captivated by the notes and wearescentient’s words on this perfume. This is a new brand to me.

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • This fragrance is one of the underrated masterpieces and you describe it so well!!
“Sparkling with bergamot while slowly getting sensual and soft with a tender iris. It’s a very soft iris, like eyes meeting across a table and melting looks when the gaze is held too long. There’s this almost floral incense like feel as the iris and labdanum blend into this cosy, Zen-like powdery veil.”
I really like its texture – it is cool and fresh, but has some darkness like our northern summer white nights. I like how the angelica and bergamot blends into mastica and iris, it is minimalistic and complex at the same time.
My favorite from the Different Company is Bachmakov.
Thank you for the review and giveaway, i live in the EU.

  • Iris, angelica and labdanum? Oh yes! This perfume has already gained me!! I find here some of my Favourite notes and, basing in the J’s review, I sure this IS justo my type of scent. I have not tried many perfumes from this brand so this would be a great opportunity to know the different company Closer. I LOVE in Spain (EU)

  • J’s thoughtful review reminds me that I still haven’t watched any of Linklater’s Before films, which at this point are considered modern classics. And J points out some interesting ways in which After Midnight bridges cologne-style fragrances and nocturnal designs, like the angelica segue from bright opening to musky blonde wood, iris, and labdanum. Wonderful review, and After Midnight sounds wonderful as well.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any The Different Company perfumes. Thanks for the giveaway!

The zen-like powder that he said is present is interesting to me. Notes sound good. Mastic is new to me. I have not heard of this brand before.

  • foreverscents says:

I love all the movies in the “Before” trilogy. It was masterly writing indeed from J to draw a parallel between “Before Sunrise” and After Midnight. J perfectly described the journey this fragrance takes with its neroli opening, to its herbal this and finally to its tender end with iris and benzoin. I can see 2 new lovers taking a similar kind of journey.
I like Tokyo Bloom from The Different Company.

Thank you for the lovely review.

The presentation of this fragrance is really beautiful.

I really appreciate the tenderness and how delicate the notes of this fragrance are – subtle florals, with the lipsticky delicate goodness of iris, resting on a bed of resins and incense truly makes for a fun fragrance.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I loved the drawing of the parallel of the perfume with the movie! So many things can happen in the middle of the night and to have it be this, and not referencing a club or party, but a lovely beautiful intellectual love connection is so apropros! I only have White Zagora, I’ve been eyeing Osmanthus, and it sounds like this one needs to go on the list too! I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Great review here by –J @Wearescentient
The Different Company never dissapoints me and After Midnight is yet another fantastic creation by these amazing fragrance artists.
I love how this fragrance is thought for using on the late hours instead of daily light. Since I am a nocturnal person I will surely adore this.
The fresh opening, the greenness, the iris; everything blends into this majestic fragrance.
I hope I win this one.

I’ve not smelled any fragrances from The Different Company, but I do love the movie Before Sunrise! The description of the spice adding a bit of a seductive quality to the florals is also intriguing. IF I Win, I will spray this on and have a movie night with my Fiancée! I live in Pittsburgh, PA.

  • I believe most The Different Company fans already know, but for all others – the brand offers 100ml refills , don’t throw away your empty bottles , and buy a refill instead. You’ll be helping the environment, saving €45 , and support the brand all at the same time.
Before Sunshine is a great movie, After Midnight is just as good, I had a bottle 6-7 years ago.
J @Wearescentient review i enjoyed, although I can’t say I’m on the same page about the nocturnal , scent of a lover , and the amber sweet soft iris aspects of the fragrance. Some time past by , but on me After Midnight opens up very green, almost bitter , and quickly turns into cold powdery iris , mastic and something slightly woody. Unlike on J @Wearescentient on me the fragrance is linear, and I think it’s more of a professional, rather than romantic type of scent , as much as I like it i wouldn’t wear it on a date.
If I had to name one The Different Company fragrance to suit After Midnight movie , it would be my favorite Oud Shamash, it’s amazing and pretty much underrated gem.
    Thank you so much

What sparks my interest based on J’s review of The Different Company After Midnight is how they compare the fragrance to Richard Linklater’s 1995 film “Before Sunrise.” I am also intrigued how Luc Gabriel, The Different Company’s co- founder and creative director, in collaboration with perfumer Emilie Bevierre-Coppermann, sought to transcend traditions and create a cologne-style perfume that would gracefully adorn the nocturnal hours. The note breakdown and review provided by J sounds very interesting. I haven’t tried anything from The Different Company yet, so I may have to say After Midnight. I am from the USA.
