Elizabeth Gaynes, the founder of StrangeLove NYC was recently featured in our CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery series in December of 2019. Here is how the company began: A friend of her family owned agarwood plantations in Borneo that were producing sustainable oud. She was intrigued, as it has been long been rumored to be an aphrodisiac.

She enlisted her friend,  model and Global UNHCR ambassador Helena Christensen to sign on as the Creative Director. That was the genesis for the perfume house which uses real oud and other rare and unusual ingredients in their oils and parfums. The company began with a single product; one perfume oil was launched in 2014 at Harrods’ Salon de Parfums … StrangeLove NYC deadofnight.

Strangelove NYC deadofnight, meltmyheart, silencethesea, fallintostars reviews

Strangelove NYC deadofnight, meltmyheart, silencethesea, fallintostars by Sebastian©

Since then four more oud-based scents were added to their collection:  meltmyheart, silencethesea, lostinflowers (which was the favorite of Sr Editor Robert Herrmann, may he RIP), and most recently, fallintostars (reviewed by Editor dana sandu comparing this fragrance to fractals). Each was composed by Christophe Laudamiel.

For this CaFleureBon Contributor Video, Editor Sebastian Jara, a longtime fan of the collection reviews Strangelove NYC deadofnight, an animalic oud that incorporates real oud ,  into its composition, as well as a wonderful mix of natural ingredients as well as unusual synthetics such as  paradisone and wolf wood (used in MUGLER Aura for reference and has a dry woody like vibe). –Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

Awesome. I always enjoy how thorough Sebastian is, and how he broke down the name of the fragrance, “so you can see how lively dead of night really is” i love it! I live in Shreveport, Louisiana USA. I can’t tell the difference between real and synthetic ouds. I’m sure I’ve only experienced synthetic ouds, but I’m looking forward to smelling natural ones.

  • Always love Sebastian’s reviews, oriental spicy/woody have been of interest to me lately, so when Sebastian mentioned it in that way it piqued my interest. Live in California, and I am not experienced enough yet with oud to know whether I can tell the difference between synthetic and real oud.

  • Zachary Gonzalez says:

Hello from California, USA! Another great review from Sebastian! I enjoy how thorough his reviews are, how eloquently he lists the notes, and how honest he is. I am learning to appreciate Ouds and Animalic fragrances, and am very interested in experiencing Dead of Night… and I agree with Sebastian, best name ever! I don’t think I’m experienced enough to differentiate between real and synthetic Ouds, but look forward to smelling a larger variety and gaining a better understanding.

  • Another amazing, in-depth review by Sebastian! I absolutely love rose-oud fragrances, and dead of night sounds very intriguing. I live in Illinois, United States, and I think it’s amazing that more countries are in the giveaway for such a great fragrance! The notes sound fluent and Sebastian did a wonderful job of expressing what the fragrance truly is. I personally have never tried the fragrance, but I would love to smell how the natural oud plays with the rose and the other spices in this lovely fragrance! As for me personally, I prefer natural ouds over synthetic ouds because they provide a better image of what the ingredient is, and it transports me to the environment of an oud tree (whereas synthetic ouds remind me of chemicals and fumes).

  • I’ve watched Sebastian before! I like his analysis, I think it gives me a good sense of what to expect from scents I’ve not experienced in real life. I can sometimes tell… some very cheap ouds are distinctive. Others are very good. Of course, I have only smelled real oud a few times. I am in the US.

  • Always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews and I’m looking forward to trying this fragrance if I win

  • Great detailed review Sebastian. The fragrance smells animalic but it doesnt last long. I don’t mind. Love the rose-oud combo. Plus oud in heart and base? Wow! Looking forward to it. I can’t tell the difference between real and synthetic oud. Still lots to learn. IL, USA.

  • I’ve fancy this house for the past months so far starting with Falling into Stars and hopefully getting my paws on Dead of Night! Loving the animalistic type Ouds more and more as i become more familiar with their smells…love it

  • JungleJuice says:

Awsome review Sebastian! Always appreciate when the history of the brand Is Highlighted and love how Sebastian evokes feelings when speaking about the fragrance.
I live in Pennsylvania. I am originally from Beirut, Lebanon and have worked intermittently in Dubai. It is in Dubai that I fell in love with Oud and the scent trail it leaves even if it is too animalic. I have smelled real cambodian oud from ASQ and have smelled synthetic oud. Real oud is more anymalic than synthetic oud and can be worn in summer. I Would love to try dead of Night

  • I always watch Sebatians reviews. I like the way he gives information about the perfumes and also his passion and charisma.
I take a lot of value of his reviews. Hope he will do a lot of reviews in the future.
In the review of deadofnight I liked how he mentioned the story how this brand started the production of oud. And of course also I am a fan of Christophe Laudamiel and his beand the zoo.

  • andypanayiotou27 says:

I really enjoyed hearing about the origin of the house and how it came about out of a interest in sustainability. I haven’t had a lot of experience with natural oud, so I do have reservations on how experienced my nose is in distinguishing between natural and synthetic.
    Greetings from Cyprus.

  • Denise Dobbins says:

Sebastian is so thorough with his description of notes as well as his honest opinions. I am very interested now because of his review as I definitely find the synthetic Oud and real Oud quite different and with this fragrance, it sounds gorgeous because of so many notes.

  • Romaun m Leggitts says:

This is right up my ally. Oud & Rose is my fav. I love Nemer by Boadicea. I’m hoping the this one will be even better. thank you guys for doing this. God bless

  • Another top class review by Sebastian! He has definitely peaked my interest in this fragrance and the perfume house. I love the passion he puts into every video which really fuels my interest in these niche fragrances. In particular with this video, his breakdown of every note is very thorough and even comments on the unique notes which can be found. I cant really smell the difference between real and synthetic ouds… I am trying to get my nose on as many as I can and am really learning to appreciate them.
    Based in Scotland, United Kingdom.

  • Hello from Bucharest, Romania. Would love to get my nose on this one as to have a benchmark for real oud. I don’t have the experience so I can’t really tell synthetics from natural. Great review by Sebastian, as always. Thank you for the opportunity to participate!

  • fragrancejourney says:

Sebastian does an amazing job of breaking down accords and explaining his experience with fragrances from beginning to the end of the wearing.Ive been looking at this fragrance for awhile but it’s very expensive and out of my price range at the moment.Im really into animalic barnyard oud’s so this would be amazing to smell.Thank you all for the opportunity to win this amazing fragrance.Cordova Tenn USA.

  • This is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite samplings from 2019. The opening is very, extremely banyard, oud. 15 minutes later the dry down begins, and morphs into this stunning, woody, floral. I would already own a bottle if it wasn’t so expensive. I would love to win a bottle of this wonderful parfum! Thank you for the review, and the drawing. US.

  • Sebastian’s description of Dead of Night had me interested in the note of wolf wood. I’m not an expert on real or synthetic oud, but a big fan of unisex fragrances and would love to try this. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • Hello beautiful people!
I’m intrigued by your house and incredible magical perfumes products. Thanks to Sebastian’s video review about your company and introduction to “Dead of night”! What a name! For me it’s meant end of darkness and reborn to new beautiful day!!! Love it!!! Because Sebastian description always serious about each perfume I learned a lot from him and today I have learned about your company and “Dead of Night”, he did good job, I like his review a lot.
I was traveling all my life and all my experiences in my memory , it’s very interesting how notes in fragrance remind me something very special, very specific and that is why I LOVE perfumes
I think your company make best of best fragrances, so I want to say thank you for opportunity to get to know , get experience of this absolutely gorgeous Rose-Oud fr. “Dead of night”!
    I love natural Oud note,
Sorry for my English , it’s my second language
    I’m USA Florida

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always informative and very insightful. You can tell that he really knows fragrances. Dead of Night sounds very dark and mysterious. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to tell the difference between synthetic or natural oud. I wish I could. Please enter me in your giveaway. Thanks. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • Denise Katsabanis says:

I live in New York! Sebastian’s video was so deep. Especially when he said you have to experience the quiet of the Dead Of Night before you can really enjoy this provocative perfume! I immediately connected to this perfume after that. Im looking forward to trying synthetic and natural olds. I’m pretty new to niche perfume world but i’m definitely down the rabbit hole! It’s like an ever winding maze of olfactory awakenings and discoveries!

  • I’d love to be entered to win! I’m not sure I’d be able to tell the difference between faux Oud and real Oud. I love the way Sebastian mentions that the name is perfect for it. Like the stillest most quiet part of the evening. Thank you for the opportunity and I wish you loads of success!

  • bigscoundrel says:

Sebastian always does a great job breaking down the fragrance and its notes. I especially liked the history of deadofnight where its origins come from raising awareness for sustainable farming. I absolutely can smell the difference between synthetic oud and natural oud — either that or I just haven’t smelled a synthetic oud that has the natural oud funk. I’m in New Jersey, USA.

  • Goldenkid96 says:

I honestly want this fragrance because of that wolfwood note it sounds pretty cool I like that Sebastian said it’s a natural oud because I’m into rose oud combos. It’s sound pretty interesting. I’m too young (23) for oud scents but I like wearing them to special occasions, honestly I just want to show off that I’m wearing a 500 dollars fragrance. I live in New York and winters here are way to long for my liking but it gives me an excuse to where heavy and richer scents. I can’t always tell the difference between synthetic and real ouds but sometimes if a oud fragrance smells a lot like bakhoor, which is like burning a coal and putting a dried oud chip on it, I can tell it’s authentic oud. I don’t care much about winning a giveaway I just want world peace…and this fragrance.

  • Sebastian is guilty of absolute cuteness when trying to soften the impact of the animalic real oud may have on some of us and he’s also right about the name! Now, to be able to appreciate the real one, you must exercise your senses by sampling the real oud in as many shapes you can afford to, or lucky to come by. There’s no other way, us, commoners, can distinguish between them. One way of knowing if it’s a synthetic, is the price they sell it for. If It’s cheap it is not real. Unfortunately it’s not necessarily valid, the other way around, meaning that if a fragrance is expensive the oud in it must be real. Of course, you can imagine it’s beauty with the help of the analogies made by the more trained noses. So I did with the whiskey drank by actors in the movies that I watched when I was a child and I hated it when I actually tried it as an adult. It may sound silly but i think that at least the big brands could afford some raw material samples in their shops, to help educate us, especially when exotic and rare materials come into play:)
    Hugs, from Romania !

  • I love how Sebastian gives some background on the fragrances past as an oil. I’m not sure if I’ve ever smelled a fragrance with real oud, so I guess I can’t tell them apart. Washington State, USA

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Sebastian’s reviews are always brimming with information and sometimes I’m not the biggest fan of oud, but after watching him, Strangelove sounds like one I could rock.
I don’t think I could tell the difference between natural and synthetic oud lol
    Thanks for the giveaway
    Pennsylvania USA

  • I really love the way Sebastian takes you on a journey and helps you imagine the full experience of the fragrance from the opening to the dry down. I often can tell the difference between real and synthetic oud, not always. This fragrance sounds challenging, interesting and a little scary! I’d love to try it.
    Los Angeles, CA

  • Hi,
I liked Sebastian’s review particularly where he explains the origins of real oud and how how the concept started with a sample at a TED talk and developed into the end product today. I’d like to enter into the givaway, I live in Nottingham, UK. I can’t smell the difference between real and synthetic oud my nose is not that well trained yet!

  • I like the name and the promise of real oud. I live in Chandler, TX, USA. I don’t know the difference in ouds yet. Thank you.

  • I am not a fan of animalic fragrances just like Sebastian but he convinced me that in this fragrance i should look beyond that. His video made me really courios about DeadofNight. I love his reviews but he will get me either bankrupt or killed by my wife for spending so much money on fragrances.:) His passion is just contagious.
I cant tell the difference between real deal and fake. I thought that all of them were just slightly different syntetics. I thought the time of real oud in fragrances have passed because of its price. I am Milos and I live in Podgorica, Montenegro.

  • Great review! Love the description about how this is a lively, natural and animalic oud fragrance. The comparison to Frederic Malle’s The Night is also helpful. I have never smelled real oud before thus am not sure if I can tell the difference versus a synthetic one (which I assume is what I have been smelling in fragrances all the time). Thanks for the draw. Regards from the USA.

  • Wilson Siavichay says:

Hello from NYC, USA, I am so proud to see a local niche house make such a good perfume, I am very fanatic of oud, spices and woods notes and I would love to treat it.

  • I love oriental and woody scents, Sebastian is always so knowledgable and knows how to review a scent. Would love to win this one, it sounds like a great scent. Living in the EU

  • Jeff Hughes says:

I am learning so much about fragrances from Sebastian and would love the opportunity to try Dead of Night!

  • Live in Virginia. I can smell the difference in Ouds, and this review makes think I would like it.

  • The real oud is dancing on your skin, it has this deep animalistic charm. There is nothing like it in the world. Synthetics are good, especially for ethical sustainability, but they need to be blended with naturals.
Sebastian is entertaining as always. The aspect of the review I liked the most is that he is not limiting the review to just the scent, he talks about the whole history behind the creation and adds personal touches and observations. And some witty humour.

    All the best,
    Your loyal fan from Edinburgh,

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s passion for oud fragrances. I can smell the difference between real oud and synthetic. From New York City

  • citizenkage says:

First off I gotta say that Helena Christensen was my first crush as a little kid. I used to love when that video came on MTV or VH1, so beautiful!! What I like most about Sebastian’s review is his love for the name of this fragrance. I have to agree it’s a really cool name. “Dead of Night.” I’m big on titles and names so I appreciated this because it’s the first thing I thought of…”what a cool name.” I feel like I can tell the difference between synthetic and real oud. Real oud is usually much more animalic and sometimes fecal. Whereas synthetic they try to tone it down to be more wearable. I live in FL, USA.

  • This sounds fantastic, I love rose fragrances they are just the best!! I Live in the US, Iowa, And id like to say I can tell the difference but I’ve been fooled by a lot of synthetic smells before.
Sebastian’s videos are always great to watch, he describes fragrances beautifully.

  • Sebastian always brings such enthusiasm to his reviews. I’m ready for some new takes on oud. I do like it as an anchoring note but want to smell some new variations. I’m really intrigued by the use of wood wood since I like Mugler’s Aura quite a lot. I’m in the US.

  • I enjoyed listening to the scent journey that Sebastian described on his review on YT. I’m not 100% sure if I have smelled real oud. I have bottles of Epic man by Amouage and Oud Wood by Tom Ford which contain oud, but because i don’t think I’ve smelled real oud, i can’t tell them apart yet. Thank you Strangelove NYC for the giveaway. I live in the UK

  • From Seattle, Washington in the USA. I am coincidentally wearing ‘Fall into Stars’ right now, and absolutely love the natural Oud scent and composition of this fragrance and the ‘Dead of Night’ sounds so intriguing! What I enjoyed most about the review from Sebastian’s YouTube video is his description of the opening through dry down and the green fresh foliage/lots of wood and 2 different Oud/ 2 different rose notes, and the strong animallic opening. It sounds exactly like a fragrance that I’d love to wear. I have worn a sample of Montale’s Original Aoud and I’m not entirely sure if it is synthetic but I didn’t care for that note. However, I adore ‘Fall into Stars’ and the Frederic Malle series of Arabian parfums especially The Promise. So, I’m not sure if I can tell the difference except perhaps actual oud oil is smoother, and more depth? Very excited to try a sample of ‘Dead of Night’ whether I win the giveaway or not, thank you!

I’ve sampled Fall into Stars and was intrigued on how something soo animalic(at first) mellows out into something smoother yet still exotic I’d wear. Although I have few ouds that vary in quality, strength, and longevity, i dont think i can tell them apart from real and synthetic ouds (other than price wise).
I will definitely sample Dead if Night, if i don’t win of course. Great review of Sebastian!
    South Gate, Ca. USA

  • Jeff Hughes says:

I live in the Washington, DC area. I’ve never tried or even had the opportunity to try Dead of Night (as Sebastian said, awesome name!) And until I started watching these Smelling Great Fragrances videos, I’d no idea what an “animalistic oud” was! I learn something new about fragrances from Sebastian almost every day. My girlfriend gave me a look when I referred to loving a “fougere” I’d recently tried. It was a good look, though…I think LOL!

  • I enjoyed how Sebastian discussed the history of the house and also that they use sustainable natural Ouds. Also they he explained that this Oud is animalic and also that he explained the aroma chemicals paradisone and wolfwood which are used in the composition. I live in the U.S. and I’m not 100% positive I can smell the difference between natural and synthetic Ouds to be honest. Thank you so much for this extremely generous draw!

  • Pedro Candelaria says:

I love fragances. One of this could be part of my collection. Keep working hard for us.

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s history and origin story on how Strangelove NYC was started and their use of sustainable oud and creation of the fragrance Dead of Night. I live in Texas, USA and I can’t tell the difference between synthetic and real oud.

  • Kranthi Bydida says:

Great review as usual. Sebastian’s description of the fragrance almost brings it to life for us as audience. I’d love to be entered into the giveaway.

My favorite oud fragrance(from sebastian’s) recommendation is the banana republic oud mosaic. Oud and sandalwood , just wow ! Thanks !

  • Just watch Sebastian’s review of Dead of the night. Very interesting combinations. Love watching Sebastian’s reviews honest and not bias. His review was interesting as I don’t have one OUD smelling cologne. But many different brands of designer and niche colognes. I’m very interested in this fragrance as my first OUD cologne. Furthermore his information of Helena Christensen involvement is like WOW! In my Late teens early 20’s she was a BABE!! And based on the picture still a beautiful woman! I live in the Chicagoland suburbs of Illinois USA. Lastly if I can tell the difference between real or synthetic OUD the answer is I’m a OUD newbie but want to learn. Thanks for the consideration!!!

  • Am I the only one that found it amusing when Sebastian was trying to explain what the name Dead of Night evokes for him without trying to get morbid? I appreciate your tact, sir!
I live in NYC and have an NY and animalic/oud story. I was at Bloomingdale’s the woman selling perfumes said a cologne was very animalic and I asked her what that meant and she was trying to describe it and some random guy walking by said “It smells like wet cats” as he passed . The cologne didn’t smell like wet cats but I always laugh when I hear that term. I can’t tell the difference between synthetic wet cats or natural…

  • What I like from Sebastian’s review is his take on the wearing experience that these fragrance seems to make him enjoy. I would like to live it myself.
    I live in Spain, EU.
I am not an expert about ouds, but I have the feeling that the natural oils react and smell much different on each person than the synthetics, that tend to smell rather similar on everyone’s skin. But I don’t think I could recognize the difference for now. Best regards

  • I loved being reminded of the history of this house and sustainable oud. I heard about it back then but never had the chance to sniff the oil. Would go ga ga over this. I’m in USA. Yes, real oud is totally different from synthetic, and often not pleasant. I can handle the fecal barnyard piss ones. I’ve tried. I can’t do it.

  • I always love how he describes fragrances. Compared to other reviewers, Sebastian really gets in dept and is very up front. He made sure viewers know that this is a very OUDY fragrance compared to others out there in the market. All in all, great review. I live in San Diego, CA. And i haven’t had enough experience with ouds to know if i can tell the difference.I have only tried TF Oud Wood and Initio Oud for Greatness and loved them.

  • Matt Peterson says:

As always, Sebastian is a BOSS at fragrance reviews. Everytime without fail he describes things so well and with such honesty that I want to run out and buy the fragrance!
I really would love to try out this fragrance. I want to know what a real ‘serious’ rose/oud fragrance can smell like and how it develops. I am a newbie in the niche fragrances and dont have enough experience to tell the difference between real and synthetic oud. But I want to learn!
Hopefully I can eventually get my hands on all of the fragrances from this house. Truly amazing stuff!
    I am in Utah, USA.

  • Ravil Dashtanov says:

Honestly love Sebastian’s reviews, being middle eastern and having similar tastes makes me lucky to have found someone honest like him. I really like the way he described the differences in the rose and oud in this fragrance vs the traditional rose oud combo. I live in Virginia btw.

  • Dave Spitcaufsky says:

Nice, detailed review as usual, I live in Chicago, Illinois, and can definitely tell the Difference between real oud and synthetic oud.

  • I love hearing Sebastian talk about fragrances especially this one. He is very knowledgable about the different oud, real or synthetic. He seems to really love this Rose and oud fragrance and that appeals to me . Also he love the name of the fragrance, Dead of the night. I have never tried any of this brancd and don’t know if I can tell the difference between natural and synthetic oud. California, USA

  • Sebastian was very clear that dead of night utilizes real oud. Rose and oud go so well together. I’ve not compared synthetic vs real oud. I’m in Texas, USA!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

WOW!!!! What a great review again by Sebastian. I love oud & rose combo in perfumes, so STRANGELOVE NYC DEAD OF NIGHT is definitely for me with animalic, natural, real oud & rose combo. Thanks for your generosity. Would love to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in NY, USA.

  • I always look forward to Sebastian’s reviews because where else would I learn about notes like paradisone and wolf wood? He has quite an eclectic collection of fragrances, and I know I can count on discovering new brands through his videos. I don’t have enough experience with ouds to tell the difference between natural ones and synthetic ones, but I’m drawn to earthy, woody scents, so “Dead of Night” sounds like it will be amazing. Chiming in from New Iberia, Louisiana.

  • Abdul Latif Banire says:

First time hearing about this brand/cologne. Very rich and interesting composition. Just saw the review on Sebastian’s YouTube channel.
Would love to add this to my collection.

  • I appreciated Sebastian’s thorough review of this fragrance, probably as raw as the fragrance itself. I live in New Hampshire and can definitely say that I know no difference between synthetic or natural oud because I have never smelled either before! But this perfume, and particularly Sebastian’s review has definitely piqued my interest! Thanks for this lovely giveaway!

  • I loved hearing about the interesting history of this house. One of the things I love most about fragrance is how it transports one to exotic locales and unites us across time, space and culture. Sebastian gave an excellent and in-depth review as always. I have not yet honed my “oud chops” enough to distinguish natural from synthetic oud, but am avidly learning and eager to know more. From Chicago, IL / USA

  • Being somebody that is somewhat new to fragrances, a list of ingredients that long can be intimidating and confusing. It was cool and supper helpful that he boiled down the main notes to oud and rose. I also enjoyed how he didn’t stop there but dived into the notes that back up the scent. I’m from Minneapolis, Minnesota in the U.S. I definitely haven’t smelt enough oud fragrances to know the difference. That being said there’s a good chance I’ve only smelt synthetic ouds before.

  • Edward Market says:

Current Oud favorite is “OUD FOR GREATNESS” by Initio. Love the scent of Oud and this sounds like a powerhouse for the scent. I also notice this has the agarwood like Initio. Rose is a great balance for the scent of Oud in many fragrances….at least I think so. I’d be very excited to try this

  • What I liked most about Sebastian’s review was how thorough yet engaging it was. He always has a way of speaking that keeps you hooked and interested in what comes next.
I also always appreciate him sharing insight into the house itself, its so helpful to learn about that too.

I can tell the difference between natural and synthetic oud if the quality or blend isn’t good but if it’s done very well it’s hard to distinguish the difference.

    From Ireland, EU.

  • Sébastien knows his Oud I love how he speaks passionately about the real oudiness of Dead of Night. I live in Paris, France .
As someone who grew up in an the old Medina of Fez, we had this bazaar where they sold real oud and it always smelled of Oud passing by. Oud was the first real scent that made me realise I loved fragrances. So I think I am able differentiate between the real and the synthetic ouds.

  • I love Sebastian’s channel and that he described Dead of Night as having an animalic oud. My favorite! I can definitely tell the difference in synthetic and natural oud. I live in Dallas Tx.

  • Ramey Blankenship says:

I love the way Sebastian Described the way the oud and rose worked together. I’m in Alabama , USA. I have a few “oud” fragrances but don’t know if they use real oud or not. I would love this one so I could compare.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I enjoyed about the review, is that he thoroughly explained the background of the fragrance, and then made it sound quite appealing, although quite animalic. I, unfortunately, have not yet smelled oud. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Just smelled some oud chips without being sure they were original: was surprisingly suave and pleasant. I have only a slightly idea about ouds based on the olfactive pyramids stated by reliable houses. So I’ll be happy to have and smell a certified oud. It’s very interesting how the StrangeLove NYC was founded. I am sure I can fel in love with deadofnight. Sebastian’s videos are always factual, trying to explain how a special ingredient smells, now I have an idea how paradisone and wolf wood can be. I live in the EU.

  • Great review. I enjoyed hearing how animalic the fragrance can be, the wolf wood, and the combination of rose (a scent that I am becoming very fond of as of late); very interested. I am from the USA and to my knowledge I cannot smell the difference between real and fake oud.

  • Sebastian always bring’s up hidden gems. Very detailed review as always, it makes me want to try this one. Especially since I’ve never tried any real animalic oud before.

  • Keith O Halloran says:

This fragrance has me intrigued. It has so many beautiful and sustainable ingredient that sound so beautiful as Sebastian describes them. Real animalistic Oud, WoW I’m doubly intrigued.

  • Justin Hinckley says:

I love the pairing of Oud, naturaul, and Rose and love the the fact that this frgrance has many notes and is complex.

  • Sebastian tells this brand’s owners include Helena Christiansen, the supermodel from the 1990s. It is created by Christophe Laudamiel and has real oud. it is oriental woody style and will particularly appeal to those who like animalic fragrances. Sebastian also loves the name and how this fragrance comes in oil, too in addition to edp that is reviewed. My record is mixed when it comes to telling the difference between real and synthetic oud. Sometimes I can tell and sometimes I cannot. I am in US.

  • Hello sebastian
great review as always, great deqcription with right words to describe
really enjoying to watch you and you have “the art” to talk about and describe fragrances
for me really oud doesnt smell synthetic or “skunky”
    i live in France

  • As ever Sebastian has a sillage of authority and insight, I love a rose oud combo but haven’t smelled a real oud version, UK based, thanks

  • The Oud & Rose combo might be a little worn out, but simply because the two work so well together. Natural Oud usually smells more interesting and doesn’t necessarily have to be animalic. This one sounds interesting. I think Hedione (or Paradisone in this case) can help such heavier fragrances a lot to become brighter.

    Best wishes from Germany

  • Lefteris Fotopoulos says:

Love the rose oud combo and my favourite is diptyque oud palao. I would love to try another one like this. I’m from Greece. I don’t know if I have ever smelled real oud so I don’t think I can tell the difference.

I have been a subcsriber of Smelling Great Fragrance for at least 2 years now. I love Sebastians detailed reviews and so is this one.
As for the oud…I do not have a lot of experiance with it. I love perumes and have stareted my perfume journey about 3 years ago, so I would love to add this one to my little seection.

I like the detail that sebastian delves into on this video as well as listing the notes. I honestly cannot smell the difference between the ouds. I live in Whittier, California, USA.

  • Hello from Alicante, Spain!

Excellent review by Sebastian as always. I’ve been looking for a review of this fragrance for quite a while as I’ve started discovering Strangelove NY (I own MeltmyHeart). Especially useful was Sebastian’s comparison to The Night of Frederic Malle (which I own and treasure). What is also appreciated is his emphasis on the fact that the brand uses real oud oil which is good to know since he reviews so many oud fragrances on his channel. Also, his warning about the opening being animalic is very welcome. I love animalic fragrances, thus, for me this more of an invitation to try/buy it! Perhaps this should have been included in his video of the top three skankiest oud fragrances along with Phuong Dang, FM and Le Labo 😉

I look forward to more reviews of fragrances from this brand, especially LostinFlowers and SilencetheSea.

  • I think Sebastian always does a fine job with reviewing fragrances like this and highlighting their true character. I have a deep appreciation for this house and for Christophe Laudamiel’s work. Would love to have a chance to try this ! I am based in Europe

  • Krzysztof Patyna says:

I enjoyed the fact it contains real oud wood rather then synthetic. Having said that I never smelled both to notice the difference. It’d be good to compare. I also like the name of the fragrance and the fact it speaks for it self without words. I’m from UK.

  • imranabdullah says:

Awesome Sebastian. Always love Sebastian’s reviews. This is another great review from Sebastian. I love Oud and rose fragrances and this fragrance sounds amazing.

  • Lee Mitchell says:

    Hi from UK,
Sebastian is the best reviewer on YouTube he is always so clear and honest with his descriptions I can sometimes blind buy from the way he explains a fragrance as I am that confident I will like it or not, and this one sounds right up my street, I love rose and Oud and the quality of the ingredients used sounds so intriguing, I really want to try melt my heart as well so will be hunting these out for sure.

  • I liked the thorough breakdown of the notes and detailed description that Sebastian provided. This sounds like an interesting oud to me, given it’s a natural one with a very musky, animalic dimension. To be honest, I can’t smell the differences between natural and synthetic oud, I haven’t smelled enough of each, knowing which is which. I am in the EU, thanks for the chance.

  • It’s hard to communicate how something smells, but Sebastian certainly is the guy who does it best. And when you combine his nose with his elegant phrasing you get videos that are informative and entertaining.
I am relatively early in my fragrance journey and therefore I can not tell synthetic and natural ouds apart, however I sure look forward to acquiring that skill.
    Cheers from Switzerland

  • As always a great review from Sebastian. In this video in particular I enjoyed how Sebastian talking about the history of Dead of Night fragrance.
I’m not so experienced to smell the difference between synthetic and real oud but I like to wear rose and wood fragrances.

    All the best!

  • Nojimu S Adebanji says:

I will like to win full bottle of this fragrance…. I have rose and oud fragrance but have not try natural oud before

  • I just love Sebastians videos, as they are always insightful, and he is always so dead on with his descriptions!!

  • Thank you for a very detailed review, especially the explanation about Paradisone and Wolfwood. I’m not sure about natural vs synthetic oud, having not smelled much natural one except in Tauer’s.
Thanks for the draw! I live in EU.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always a joy to watch. No difference this time: A good balance between background information and a thorough description of the fragrance itself.

Since I’ve only smelled Oud fragrances that are way to cheap to contain the organic stuff, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t tell the difference to synthetic.

Being able to would be nice. So please enter me in the draw. I’m from Germany, EU.

  • Greeting from Cairo Egypt, amazing review yet again. As a middle Eastern I do enjoy oud and I prefer the natural oud more than the synthetic.

  • IvanVelikov says:

First time I’ve heard Strangelove NYC was here a few weeks back. Judging by Sebastian take Dead of Night is special really complex scent, going through a lot of phases. I’m sensing some old school vibes in it , but I’m sure sandalwood and rose will balance out the animalic smell well. I would wear it with a suit.

  • Great review by Sebastian of this perfume.
I have never smelled this perfume but I think the combination of oud and rose makes it an amazing fragrance and the name of the perfume matches wonderfully.
I think I can’t make the difference between synthetic and real oud.
I am from Romania and I would be glad if I won this perfume.

  • Man does this sound awesome – two types of oud and two types of rose! I love Sebastian saying you really need the dead of night and silence to experience a fragrance like this because it starts so bold and animalic! I’m in the USA in Pennsylvania and I’ve never had the opportunity to smell real and synthetic oud side by side, but the oud fragrances I do have, I love!

  • Another great review from Sebastian!
And what a very creative name of perfume!!!
I like oriental woody/spicy perfumes, so would like to test this perfume.
It is hard to describe differences between natural and synthetic oud!

  • Hello,
I love Sebastian a lot actually. I’ve been interested in perfumery world long time ago but never thought of creating a collection. Sebastian has a way that makes having a collection of scents seem intriguing. So I started my collection and bought my very first perfume in my collection and that is Oud and Bergamot by Jo Malon.
I love oud, where I’m from, in Dubai, every event, wedding, celebration almost smell of oud. Oud is elegant, nostalgic it reminds me of my mother in a way. Very cosy note. I definitely can differentiate between real Oud and synthetic Oud. Synthetic Oud is more clean and a lot lighter, where the real Oud is more alive and heavy smelling. I hope I win this fragrance so i can expand my collection. This would be a great addition to it. Thank you guys.

  • Xin Yli-Rekola says:

  • Sebastian reviews are also good lots of information my favorite channel dead of night looks like winner in my book. I am from new York state

  • This is not a perfume but an “elixir of love”, a dream for oud lovers.

I love Sebastians reviews. He always keeps it friendly without seeming dishonest. Rose and Oud is a combination that never seems to get boring. I love Frederic Malles The Night, that Sebastian compared this fragrance with. Thank you for the chance of winning a botle. Im from Austria EU

  • Greetings! From Dallas, Texas.
I enjoy hearing history on fragrances and how they got started. Interesting to learn Dead of Night was started to raise awareness on sustainable farming.
I have not had many experience with real oud so would probably not know the difference between real and synthetic. I hear real oud is more anamalic. Would love to get more familiar with this fragrance!

  • Like always awesome review by Sebastian. I follow many reviews and some don’t have that special and interesting way of describing fragrances and how they make you feel.

  • Thanks again for another great review, Sebastian! Yet another niche house I adore. I loved how you described Dead of Night. It’s something I have yet to smell. I can’t tell the difference between the authentic and synthetic oud so I’m hoping to win this one. Thanks Cafleurebon for this generous draw. – CA, USA

  • Eric Rellergert says:

Hello, I’m in Missouri, USA. Wonderful review, I liked that Sebastian pointed out that this is real oud vs. synthetic. However, I’m not sure I really know the difference, I have several ouds in my collection but thinking they are probably all synthetic. I love animalics, and I love roses combined with them.
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  • As Always, I enjoyed Sabastian’s review for his detailed description of the scent profile from opening to dry down. I enjoy the animatic character of well-crafted natural oud over the synthetic, but I love both.

  • Another intriguingly descriptive review from Sebastian. And while synthetic oud does have its place, I can certainly tell when real oud is part of the formula. (Matawan, New Jersey)

  • I have not smelled real oud before just synthetic kind. I am intrigued by woody oud fragrances. Thanks from UK

  • I adore Rose and Oud combos I have only got experience with synthetic oud to be honest I don’t think I could tell them apart. Thanks from UK

  • I have always enjoyed Sebastian reviews because he walks you though the development of fragrance . The Dead of Night I enjoyed here how this fragrance transitioned though the difference notes . Thank you Strangelove for the giveaway .

  • I enjoyed the energetic video review of this fragrance that includes some of my favorite notes, rose, violet, and amber, in addition to high quality oud. And what an original name! I am not experienced enough to tell the difference between natural and synthetic oud. I am in the USA.

  • Love Sebastian’s comments about real oud and can definitely tell the difference! I’m in DC USA

  • Greetings from Connecticut, USA. Honestly, I have never heard of Strangelove NYC, and unfortunately there is no place near me to try this. But what I like, Sebastian drew parallels with famous perfumes, and I can predict whether I like it or not. And of course oud and rose … definitely nice.

  • I enjoyed the description of different ouds in the review of deadofnight. I’m not sure I could tell the difference between natural and synthetic oud, but I’d like to learn. I am in the USA.

  • What I love about Sebastian is his expertise and art of describing a fragrance in such a way that you can almost smell it, which he did with this fragrance.
I enjoyed the story behind the company and the ingredients used in your fragrance, and I enjoyed the appealing experience this fragrance gives you as described by Sebastian. I can smell the difference between synthetic and real oud in most fragrances.

Thank you for this great oppurtunity.

  • I like how Sebastian keeps on warning us! And thinking of the mentioned Malle Night I fully understand why. I’ve smelled real and synthetic Oud as raw material. But in a perfume there sure are cases where I easily am wrong. Thanks for the draw, would love to win this to Germany.

  • Ester Belmonte says:

I loved the rose/oud combo with animalic notes described by Sebastian in the fragance. Rose/oud and animalic perfumes are my favorite, so this must be amazing. I live in Belgium, Europe, and I think I can pick up the difference between synthetic and real oud pretty well. I’m an oud obsessed! Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

  • Sebastian brings these fragrances to life. I really want to give this one a go with the oud/animalic accords. Sounds divine. USA, I can usually distinguish real oud.

  • Kevin Threat says:

I love the review because I’m a huge fan of rose and oud combos. With oud in the top and basenote, it sounds like a fragrance of supreme depth and complexity! I live in Brooklyn, NY. I’m starting to learn the difference between real and synthetic oud. The real oud sings off of my skin and the sillage is very prominent. I think real oud is more interesting and fascinating.

  • I enjoy how Sebastian reviews all those fragances. He is truly expressive and fun.
Well, I can tell the difference between real or synthetic oud. My nose is still learning.

  • I liked how Sebastian broke down the notes and described how it smells, it sounds like something I’d really like. I grew up in the Middle East so I can distinguish real oud from synthetic, although I appreciate both in some way.

I live in Los Angeles, USA.

  • hautebrother says:

I am a huge fan of the rose and oud combo! I’m writing from Brooklyn, NY. Sebastian is always so thorough with his reviews and I’m very intrigued by the prominent oud progression in this fragrance. Real oud sings and has more nuance than synthetic oud. The sillage has more depth as well; less sharp to my nose and more mysterious.

  • I enjoyed Sebastian passion for reviewing, he know how to break the scent piece by piece. And in doing so he gives the viewer an accurate picture of the scent.
    I’m from Israel.

  • I don’t have the experience to be able to differentiate between synthetic oud and the real deal. I wish I had the opportunity to learn that skill.. Sebastian always has such great detailed reviews and I so enjoy them. This would be most interesting to try. Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I have recently inculcated this hobby and Sebastian’s content has been a primary source of me learning so much about the world of fragrances. This is yet another niche brand and some notes(wolf wood) I had never heard of and would love to smell this sometime sooner than later.

  • Another top class review by Sebastian! Sebastian did a wonderful job of expressing what the fragrance truly is also I love the passion he puts into every video which fuels my interest in these niche fragrances. Thanks to him I am reading this blog and I am interested in niche perfumery. Unfortunately, I am not experienced enough yet with oud to know whether I can tell the difference between synthetic and real oud. If I win it, I will roll on the floor for joy.

  • I have not tried many oud fragrances, so I’m not even sure that those few I tried were natural of synthetic ouds, but I always prefer natural materials, even in perfumes. So I would very love to try this perfume. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

I would love to be entered to the giveaway! I really loved how Sebastian talked about the differences between natural oud and synthetic…I didn’t realize there are two types!

  • Such a great initiative!
I loved that Sebastian is so spot on. I have a sample of this myself and after his review understand it so much better. I love this fragrance!
    I am in the Netherlands.
After having smelled dozens of real ouds I pick the synthetic ones out immediately. After the real oud there is really no turning back.

  • Hello from Zagreb capital city of Croatia small country in cross of Italy, I watched Sebastian review of this incredible fragrance Strangelove NYC deadofnight, just love the way how Sebastian describes it to every detail almost I can smell it through my iPhone It would be very nice to be chosen for this giveaway and to have this amazing fragrance.
And Sorry if bad English, I’m giving my best ‍♂️

  • My nose is not as sophisticated as some others, so I don’t know if I’d be able to discern the difference between synthetic and natural oud.
I really enjoyed Sebastian’s review. I love oriental, spicy fragrances. And am really intrigued with the note of wolf wood. I haven’t smelled Mugler Aura so I have no idea what it smells like!
    I live in the USA.

  • Now this is an amazing giveaway . Great review from Sebastian as always, i’ve heard only great things about this house so i would love to test dead if night. As for the oud knowledge, even if i’ve smelled several types of skanky ouds, medicinal ouds, synth ouds, cheap or expensive ouds over the last years, i’m still not good enough to tell the difference each and every single time. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

Always love Sebastian’s reviews, oriental spicy/woody have been of interest to me lately, so when Sebastian mentioned it in that way it piqued my interest.

I live in Atlanta and I am not experienced enough yet with oud to know whether I can tell the difference between synthetic and real oud. However, this is the real oud here and I have smelled real oud back in India as well but not sure whether I would be able to differentiate between real and chemical.

    Would love to win this.

    Regards
    Sunny

I loved sebastien’s review because he is really in depth about all the notes and particularities of the scent. I would love to try this fragrance because I am a fan of Oud and Roses, but I haven’t really tried the two together. I can’t really tell the difference between real and synthetic, and I live in Texas.

  • Thank you Sebastian for this great review, thank you to Strangelove NYC for their generosity and a thank you to Christophe for creating these amazing perfumes.

It’s always a pleasure to watch Sebastian’s reviews. I love how he went on to explain the backstory behind the perfume and the brokedown the name of it as well.

Personally, I’ve never thought much about being able to tell the difference between the natural or synthetic ouds, I’m thinking that I probably cannot, though, in reality I probably can.

I’m in Metro Boston, MA, USA.

  • Sérgio Rodrigo Teixeira says:

Another great review from Sebastian. The way he’s able to relay the vibe of a scent is outstanding. In this particular one, how he manages to describe the difference between the real and synth oud, and the animalic aspects of the oppening is really visual, and by lack of another word, not short of amazing. I think I can tell if a fragrance has real oud in it…I think. I’m from Portugal

  • Sebastian always has great detailed reviews. This one sounds interesting. I’m not sure if I’ve smelled both synthetic and real oud, so I don’t know if I could tell the difference. I’m in Michigan.

  • VA, USA
From Seb’s review, I think the trio of oud, rose & jasmine are what makes this fragrance special. I’ve worn all sorts of real oud oils for decades and can easily tell the difference right away.

  • I always appreciate finding out new frangrances and discovering new brands. Sebastian’s reviews are exactly that and this one made me curious. I can tell the difference between real and synthetic ouds from the metalic, stingy openings of the frangrances. Greeting from Romania!

  • Such a popular review and perhaps perfume also. I have not been able to smell it. But I love Christophe and his work and the glamour of SLNY. And Sebastian does a great job explaining natural and synthetic OUD. As a natural perfumer of course I love natural OUD. I would be so thrilled to win this perfume, thanks to the generosity of SLNY. I am in Europe.

  • Sebastian is always really thorough, and I’ve never heard of this perfume before. Natural oud is usually more animalic, but not always so I’m not always able to tell the difference. And I’m from Denmark(EU)

I enjoyed Sebastian’s honest & experienced opinion explaining the ingredients of Strangelove NYC deadofnight and making me curious to find out how high-end quality of Oud have been used to create this perfume cause throughout my journey I had a lot to compare among many varieties of synthetic and real Oud.

  • mustafa daoud says:

Brilliant review by Sebastian as always his details and the background of Dead of Night.
I also enjoy the way he explains the product you feel like you are familiar with the scent and you want to experience the journey of it and he is spot on with the name very unique.
    I live in London UK.
At this moment of time I am not that experience to tell the difference between synthetic Oud or real but hopefully in near future I will be able to differentiate it.

  • After watching this review I got the doubts if I really understand what the real oud is… I’ve been into oud fragrances lately and would very much like to try this “animalic oud” in combination with rose. This combo sounds divine!

    Lina, EU, Lithuania

  • Hello from London, U.K.
Not only was Sebastian’s review very informative it also made you want to go out and try the perfume immediately!
My experience with ouds is quite limited but I tend to regard more animalic smelling ouds as the real thing.

  • As an notsoexpert blind buyer,I rely a lot on reviews – and not one time I found myself with yet another fragrance I don’t like :). For this reason I appreciate Sebastian’s reviews a lot – fragrances make lost stories come alive, and he does a great job in illustrating this aspect.
I don’t think I can note the difference between ouds, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never smelled a real one so far 🙂

  • Wow. My kind of fragrance discription. Oud and rose together favorite combos of notes. And an angelic that dries down nicely.
I’ve never seen the movie you’re referring to tomtom the 90s.
Thank you for entering g me in this drawing.

  • I enjoyed the the entire Youtube review but specially the fact that I was not even aware of the existent of this brand. I’m fairly new in the Niche perfume world and I’m trying to build my knowledge about the different scents and ingredients. Because of that I still can’t smell the difference between synthetic and real oud. I think this fantastic fragrance will help me quit a bit to accomplish that. I live in Orlando, Fl USA
    Thank you.

  • Since I own the Strangelove NYC sample set, I’ll share my thoughts:
-Lost In Flowers , too much white flowers for my taste, gets more woody in the base , the also more indolic.
-Dead of Night , beautifully made rose and oud combination. Yes the opening is a bit harsh, but the drydown is really nice.
-Silence The Sea , but time no , I just don’t like salty fragrances. There’s a feeling of some beach in late October, with tons of seaweed, driftwood, and wet sand all of combined with foggy cold air. I appreciate the creativity, but the smell is not for me.
-Melt My Heart , now we’re talking. To me by very far the best -Strangelove NYC fragrance. Chocolate, oud , lots of nutmeg and powderyness , slightly buttery too.

I can smell synthetic and real Oud, but:
    1. Some synthetic Oud fragrances could be so well blended, that it’s hard to pick up the differences.
    2. There’s no such thing as “real Oud smell” , because it depends where the Oud is sourced from. The smell differs quite a lot.
    Thanks for the draw

Thanks for such a thorough review Sebastian. I love those animalic ouds.

    Cheers from WI, USA!

  • Identifying and differentiating between genuine (provided they are from trustworthy and reliable sources) and synthetic oud neat is typically less challenging that those in compositions. That’s the best I can say with much trepidation!
I found the name, Sebastian’s interpretation and the official blurb quite intriguing – especially the implied state of mind and body of the wearer. I also liked that he mentioned in the video that there are similarities amongst it, The Night (F. Malle) and the likes.

Since I wear artisan oud oils neat, and sometimes with florals ottos, I can’t but participate in such a generous draw. Thank you for the opportunity. (UK & BD)

  • First off, I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity for this chance to receive a bottle of dead of night. Mr. Sebastian has educated me with the knowledge of scent description and interactions I’m a way I never imagined. I have always been a lover of scents and their origins. I lace my life with notes of patchouli and vetiver, rose and oud, and incense. These are found in my living and bedroom spaces, my skin, and my soul. Hahah I am a new comer when it comes to differentiating between synthetic and natural oud but with Mr. Sebastian’s guidance I am learning to do just that. Currently I am on the hunt for a new signature scent seeing as how after chemo/radiation/hysterectomy/menopause (at 40 mind you) I can no longer wear my previous fragrance which I have worn since 1997 from the mugler house. O would simply lobe the chance to audition this exquisite composition on my skin. I love the story and the importance of sustainability within this company. As a former professional dancer and current special needs teacher, I live to dance in the depth and importance of scents. I say importance bc of the ability a scent can transport you to another place. Another time. Another life. I walk the line of my own history and my current existence with the tie that binds. That tie is fragrance. But who am I kidding, I don’t walk the line… I twirl.

  • Hello from Germany near Bonn. I have only been a subscriber for one month and therefore have only a limited impression. What I can say for sure is that Sebastian knows a lot about perfumes and in his reviews you don’t just get an objective description of the product, but you get a group-specific recommendation from a professional. I like the way he describes and interprets the different fragrances. I probably wouldn’t know the difference between synthetic and real Oud, but that’s why I look at the reviews. Also in the video about “Dead of Night” he proved his knowledge again and of course brought the product across and even told the story of the company. I would buy it if it was cheaper. Sorry for my English. Greetings from Germany.

  • This was a really good review! I especially enjoyed Sebastian explaining the history of Strangelove and their ethos of using sustainable oud sources in their perfumery. It was also interesting hearing about two new synthetic perfume ingredients. There is definitely a great difference between real and synthetic oud. Although I like both, I prefer real oud as it is so much deeper and richer, often displaying multiple facets as a fragrance develops. Synthetic oud doesn’t go through this olfactory metamorphosis, although it can smell good if the accord is of high quality. Thanks Sebastian for the review and thanks to Strangelove NYC for such an awesome, generous giveaway! I’m in Oregon, US.

Hello, I’m hailing from the Midwestern region, here in Iowa City, IA., to be exact.
Thank you, for allowing me to use this platform to express my thoughts on such an enthralling material.
I am both, highly intrigued by the doctrine of this new fragrance house & can’t wait to experience their latest NOVEL approach to this precious wood material in Perfumery.

To me, Synthetics such as [Black Agar & the like], differ from the natural material in that the perception of the aroma tends to be more streamlined i.e,
    (woody-ambery) & far more
    (linear) than the natural material.

The Synthetics definitely lack the high & low “Partials” intoned by a note of natural Oud.

But, I would think that, the Synthetics should integrate more easily into larger olfactory narratives than natural Oud.

I first smelled real Oud, from Cambodia, in 2007.
    Back then, I thought it had a slightly {spicy/woody} aroma with a backnote that resembled the odor of a freshly unwrapped {“Band-Aid™”}

Since that time, I have acquired not only the ability to perceive & appreciate the olfactory media that wafts from Oud, but I’ve also learned to listen to the very “Spirit” of it’s scent. In so doing, I then allow myself to take the “Tour” that this complicated material presents.

The nature of Oud’s origins is as unique & individual as the people who will eventually wear it’s fragrance.
This makes for an innately personal experience by anyone fortunate enough to inhale it’s aroma.
    There’s a spiritually in that.
So, this base note is as complexed as it is auspicious and that’s intriguing!

While Oud’s gentle essence languidly unfurls during the drying down phases, you’ll not only imagine inhaling warm fumes seeping up from the cracks of the deepest [Depths] in the foundation from the oldest temples of Asia.
But the scenario will be complete with nuances of rare & precious wood as our noses are directed towards undertones of INCENSE buoying an [Ethereal] nuance to the woody/ambery/resinous aura of the Oud note.

In this sense, the grounding Depth gained from using this material, stretches all the way up to the intangibility of Ethereal nuances.
This Effect, gives a sort of expansive quality, to the way you experience the environment, that real Oud creates.

You don’t just smell Oud, through nostalgia, you feel it, too!

A myriad of effects can be achieved from the use of this (one) natural raw material and it’s sustainably grown, too!
    Wow!
It’s so great to see a New Company with such strong ethical values equally yoked to a sound business model!
    I can’t wait to take
    the NEWEST journey offered by
    Strangelove NYC
    {deadofnight}

  • Deadofnight is a nice name indeed.
I think it would start more darker and really woody, but the rose and sandalwood would make it spirited and posh at the same time.
I can make a difference between natural and synthetic oud , most of the time.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

I liked that he picked dead of night for review as it was the one of the most hyped and loved Strangelove NYC.

  • sebastian’s review of dead of night was informative & persuasive, and now i want to try if my nose could smell the difference between synthetic & real oud here in california

  • Sebastian’s review of Dead of Night is very alluring. As Sebastian it took some time for me to appreciate real oud in fragrances, but if you do it’s wonderful. I’d love to win Strangelove deadofnight. I live in Netherlands, EU. Thank you for another wonderful draw.

  • Strangelove NYC fragrances are really expensive. Looked up their site, and boy oh boy..
I don’t mind spending such money, but I have to be really impressed by both the smell, and the performance .
From Deadofnight expect bold, but not harsh unapologetic fragrance with natural oud and rose , arguably leaning a bit masculine. Thanks.
I do think my nose is experienced , so yes I get when there’s natural oud.
Back and forth between USA and Scotland. 1 week in US -> 1 week in Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and EU/UK at the same time.

  • Christophe Laudamiel is the perfumer behind Amber Absolute Tom Ford , one of the best amber fragrances ever. I presume judging by the prices of Strangelove NYC perfumes, the brand owners gave him full cart blanche , so my expectations are pretty high. Grown up smell for successful people, my thoughts on DeadofNight. Thanks. USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow this sounds incredible. There seems to be so much more going on than oud and rose here. I love Sebastian’s reviews. I’m learning to appreciate natural oud and really appreciate Sebastian’s description of the animal if nature of this fragrance. Thank you for this amazing draw. I’m in the US

  • Loved Sebastian’s review as it was in English, as in plain English, Ha. My first time watching his video and already in love. No experience with Strangelove perfumes, yet. Only tangible oud experience is RealOud from Phoenicia Perfumes, and I loved it, so I guess I like natural ouds. Please have a video on synthetic ouds as I have no idea what they are like, and am interested in trying them out. I may or may not like synthetic ouds, but definitely love the natural ones (such as Indian and Kalimantan our in RealOud by Phoenicia). The combination of our and rose sounds delicious. Thanks for the nice review and the awesome giveaways. I’m from the USA.

(No way to edit my comment, so posting it again after correcting the annoying auto-corrects!!!).

  • Really artsy review, and a niche brand that stands out with really limited edition products. I respect such approach.
If DeadofNight could have been a movie character fragrance, it will fit Jamie Dornan and his role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey. Alpha male fragrance .
    I’m excited for this giveaway.

Great review, Sebastian, especially the description of the stillness in *dead of night*. hope for the opportunity to smell that feeling in this fragrance!! Honestly not sure if the ouds in my fragrances is real or synthetic :/ I do love a good sharp oud and would love to try this. I live in Berlin, Germany.

  • I love rose and oud combination , done right.
Different varieties of all natural oud , rose , santal . All the boxes are checked.
Next time visiting Luckyscent I’ll check Strangelove NYC.
Sebastian reviews are always so invigorating.
    Thanks for the giveaway.
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • Dubaiscents says:

I tried this scent at the new NYC Luckyscent with my husband and we both agreed that this has to be real Oud! And being from the Middle East, I truest his opinion. This whole line is gorgeous and I would love to own a bottle of this. Thanks for the review and chance to win such a gorgeous scent! I’m in the US.

  • Excellent review by Sebastian and I loved the way he explained the notes! I am glad that he stressed that this is an animalic oud. I am intrigued by the paradisone and wolf wood in this fragrance. I also like that it is a rosy oud according to Sebastian. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Always loved Sebastian’s reviews. He did a wonderful job by explaining in detail the notes and the source of the natural oud. I especially appreciate that it’s sustainable.
I haven’t had the chance to smell a good, natural oud, so this could be a first.
Thank you for the great review and an incredibly generous draw!
    I’m in the EU.

  • Loved Sebastian’s review as always. I agree that the fragrance name is awesome. Interested in how the real oud works with the rest of this composition.

  • latifbanire says:

First time hearing about this brand/cologne. Very rich and interesting composition. Just saw the review on Sebastian’s YouTube channel.
Would love to add this to my collection.

I enjoyed Sebastian’s discussion of natural and synthetic oud. I have read a lot about oud but don’t have much experience with it, so I don’t have a preference, but he gave me some things to look for (or should I say sniff for). As usual, he gave a vivid description of how the scent works in its various phases. I live in the US, in North Carolina. I wish he had explained why the “of” in the fragrance name is in italics, if there is a reason. Also, is he aware of the British film called DEAD OF NIGHT, which used to have something of a cult following?

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Sebastian’s review of Strangelove NYC deadofnight…so detailed and descriptive with all his reviews going through all the actual and perceived notes throughout the life of the fragrance. A classic Rose/Oud fragrance with natural oud and unique ingredients such as paradisone and wolf wood. I really don’t think I can tell the difference between real and synthetic ouds. I am from Ohio, USA.

Sebastian never fails to give us a fantastic review and his take on phenomenal fragrances! Thank you for the small history lesson on the brand, Sebastian… I appreciated that! Sebastian says you have to have a sophisticated pallet to appreciate deadofnight, and I think that is what intrigues me most! I like to think I have a sophisticated pallet, but don’t we all?!?! I guess now I am definitely going to have to seek out at least a sample of this to judge my own tastes, ha! I really enjoy Christophe Laudamiel’s creations so I am sure I would love this one! I have been a huge fan of his work for a while now….. Fierce by Abercrombie & Fitch used to be my stuff back in the day, and I loved every bit of it, even if everyone and their brother was wearing it! He is one of Sarah McCartney’s favorite perfumers so that makes him that much more respectable to me! Thank you Sebastian for reviewing and enlightening us on deadofnight! That was truly a great video! I had to re-watch it a couple of times! A huge thank you goes out to the ladies at Strangelove NYC for this super generous opportunity! This is beyond awesome and sure will be a delight for the winner! Thank you Michelyn for putting this all together! It is greatly appreciated! Sending comments in the deadofnight from Delaware, US. Good luck to all!

  • Hello from NJ , USA. I am always on the market for ouds. It’s my favorite note. I have never experienced anything from this company. I love rose ouds like xerjoff More than Words and Armani Rose d’arabie. However, I love that mix. Recently tried Boadicea Almas but did not like it much. But I am interested in seeing what this company did because it sounds interesting and unique.
And yes I can definitely differentiate real from synthetic oud. It becomes obvious as the scent progresses. I know natural oud is very difficult and expensive to source but I def would like to try it out.

  • Angela Tiegs says:

Good Evening, I really love how detailed Sebastian this Strangelove NYC dead of night review, I also appreciate the history as if helps me appreciate the fragrance I am wearing even more.

    I live Wisconsin USA.

I have a hard time distinguishing between real and synthetic oud. I need to keep trying more! 🙂

  • I love animalics and love Rose. Sounds like a STUNNING fragrance, thank you sebastian, thank you michelyn

  • brings to mind Basil Dearden’s Dead of Night! being from the Middle East i am not a stranger to real oud, so would love to try this one out. Still my favorite (so called authentic) oud perfume is the night by malle but its overpriced. from Lebanon.

  • Nice review from Sebastian. I love the Sound of this perfume, the oud mostly, which is prominent here as i understand, but i could not distinguish Real oud from a synthetic one yet. Dead of Night is when my date and i are sitting in the park after a Nice dinner and listening to the trees whistle on valentines Day. I would love to win this fragrance so i could gift it to her, i never won anything ever. Except a soccer cup.
Much love from Denmark. (Helena C’s home country) ☘️ love wicked game and Helena , she is an absolutely lovely woman.

  • I haven’t smelled enough synthetic vs real oud to be able to tell, but its interesting that people prefer one over the other!
