Stora Skuggan MoonMilk Review + Diving In Mysore Sandalwood Draw

"Old people say that water passes, And under it, the rocks won’t strain; But nature, thought, again, surpasses-

The rocks, although so strong, they crumble, And vanish slowly, as they stand;

On top of them, the waters rumble, And flowing, ever, they remain.- Mihai Codreanu. Translation & adaptation from Romanian by dana

We are made of water, and we are made swimmers- the womb takes care of that, imprinting in our writings the need for liquidity, for accaparement, for abandonment in relative suspension. The time and the light, on the other hand, we’re makers of: the measuring of seasons, lifetimes, eons; the polishing of stones; the mythology of the moon; relativity; the fire; the Aristotelian republic on the wall of a cave.

Unsurprisingly, then, the aurora, eternal fires, bioluminescence and moonmilk became early conundrums to marvel about. All others have been deciphered, but moonmilk particulars are still a scientific mystery: moonmilk exists in caves all over the world but we don’t know why it’s luminous and why it never dries to become solid. Described in 1555 by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner as dripping tears of white liquid that never dry, moonmilk inspired many- and Tomas Hempel, co-founder and perfumer of Stora Skuggan, is amongst them.

Stora Skuggan Moonmilk opens with an emerald-clear, crystalline citrus accord: lime, bergamot, mandarin and petitgrain land sharp and straight, awakening the self like a plunge in a cold underground lake. Your teeth screech, but the entry is rather precise- these notes are blending within each other so perfectly that freshness comes in (the lake, since we’re at it) not with a splash, but with the measured (albeit inhumane) elegance of an Olympic diver. And, at the exact moment of touching the water- lilies-of-the-valley, and a drop of myrtle.

Under the surface are mixed in equal proportions soft spices and milky greens, a bit tannic but friendly and intimate like the sounds that carry underwater: cardamom and crocus, peppers and black tea, volcanic salts and burning sage. They are miraculously dry, all-enveloping, and full-body-experience as they bloom—just like the first sensation of warmth when your body gets used to the coolness of the swim. And, at the exact moment you stop shivering, vetiver.

As your breath slows again to leave room for stillness, you descend in the water cave- a wooden layer is waiting deeper still, fusing with your skin; waves of hot cedar, drops of birch, and a massive vortex of sandalwood pull you in slowly and indubitably until, happily, your self goes back to whence it came. On the surface, tiny ripples widen circles.

Official notes: lime, cardamom, sandalwood, black tea, leather, lily-of-the-valley

  • Moonmilk sounds hauntingly beautiful, ethereal and deeply grounded like a secret underwater cave. Cardamom and Sandalwood are my favorite notes, and I would love to experience Tomas's Moonmilk, as they are entirely new to me, but the phenomena of moonmilk is something I've dreamed of seeing with my own eyes since I first learned of it many years ago. Thank you for the opportunity to win a sample, I live in the US.

  •  What sparked my interest about this fragrance are the notes of sandalwood cardamom and  fragrance are the notes of Sandalwood cardamom and weather leather all three of these are favorites.   I had never heard of moon milk prior to this but now I am intrigued I will be looking into it LOL . Thanks twisted lily for the chance. I am located in the US

  • The first opening notes are my favorite. I love lime, and bergamot. As well as black tea. The volcanic salts and burning sage sound interesting. Hot waves of Cedar! Mixed with a touch of birch, and sandalwood. Sounds amazing! I am not familiar with any perfumes by Stora Skuggan, but will be looking into them. Thank you for being part of the drawing. – US

  • "And, at the exact moment of touching the water- lilies-of-the-valley, and a drop of myrtle."  Sounds divine.  Never heard of moon milk, but it sounds strange and ethereal.  I'm not familiar with Stor Skuggan, but this sounds like I definitely should be.  Thanks for a very interesting review along with haunting art work.  I'm in the USA

  • Both moonmilk and Stora Skuggan perfumes are new to me. However, I am interested in discovering both. Thanks for the draw! USA

I have never heard of moonmilk. It's just wonderful how the world of fragrance can provide fascinating knowledge about the world. And it's so interesting to read about the notes a perfumer chooses to suggest plunging into water and being underwater.

    I live in the USA.

Thank you all for your comments. I do my best to do these beauties justice. But how does one do justice to art??

My translation below, for our romanian readers.

Iar peste trista-i macinare, doar apele raman curgand"

    – Mihai Codreanu.

Note oficiale: limeta, cardamon, lemn de santal, ceai negru, piele, lacramioara

  • Such a beautiful review. This is the first time ever that i hear about “moonmilk” and it sounds really interesting and fascinating. It was so nice to fully immerse in Dana’s olfactive story and lovely descriptions. This is the kind of review that us, perfume lovers need and enjoy. The fragrance notes list looks great, i love black tea and spices. Thank you very much for the nice reading, Dana is awesome.

  • I simply love it. I am always saying that nature hides a lot of misteries/miracles that we are able to see when we are really aware of what we are as part of Her, the Mother Nature. And for sure a perfume can translate in the best way this beauty and mistery of the nature…

Such a great description. I dont know the perfume put with such words…I really have to. I love how a smell has such a conection with everything  that surrounds  us and is not seen all by itself.  Beautiful.  Thank you.

  • Nicoleta.Tomsa says:

Wonderfull to see the words of Codreanu starting us off on the journey you took us on 🙂 Thank you, Dana, for serving beautiful slices of two of my favourite things in this world: great stories & scents.

  • I think this is a very nice review, as usual your story is delightful. Congratulation !

  • Such a beautiful description, Dana. This is the first time when I hear about “moonmilk”, but seems to be an interesting concept. The perfection of the article is completed of the images used.

  • Thank you all for your kind words. Stora Skugga was a surprise for me, as while I normally dwelve in completely different schools of parfumery, each and every thing I tested of theirs spoke to me. That is a job well done, in my book- with artistry to boost.

  • bumbuliuki says:

Wonderful review, Dana ! Thank you for mentioning the natural phenomenon, moonmilk. I wasn't aware of it until now.
Thank you for the beautiful translation of the  poem by Mihai Codreanu !

  • What spark my interest in Stora Skuggan moonmilk is the sandlewood. It is my favorite note in fragrances hands down. I love sandlewood. I would love to get my nose on this scent and literally experience something new and magiccal! I live in CA, USA!!!

  • Raluca Grumazescu says:

Dana always finds a way on describing the notes of a perfume like you are in a story.    First time I hear about moonwalk. Amazing!
