State of Mind French Gallantry

Earlier this year Video Contributor Seven Gavrielatos introduced his channel to ‘State of Mind’, founded by Catherine Laskine Balandina with his review of Open Mind, but it was in 2022 that Sr. Editor Karl Topham turned ÇaFleureBon on to this luxury French brand where art deco-meets modernity in an “olfactory tea room.”

State of Mind French Gallantry is composed by perfumer Karine Dubreuil-Sereni in collaboration with creative director Catherine Laskine-Balandina  and is  unique twist on the aromatic genre, The fragrance opens with a bright sparkling aura and dries down to a slightly smoky leather accord. As in all State of Mind fragrances, French Gallantry also is built around a tea note, here, black tea. State of Mind French Gallantry is composed with ingredients you might associate with a herb garden, such as sage, oregano, thyme, basil and an outstanding tomato leaf note. Although Steven feels it is a warm weather fragrance, most of us live in a climate control environment and I would wear it all year round -Michelyn Camen, Editor-in Chief

Top: Black Tea, Tomato Leaf and Basil; Middle Thyme, Oregano, Sage and Laurels; Base: Leather, Amberwood, Animal notes and Heliotrope.

Disclosure: Steven received a bottle and Michelyn a sample

  • Wow, this parfume looks amazing! I found interesting the parfume itself, it looks strange, but in the same time very interesting, and it has a good shape! I live in Romania!

  • Ramses Perez says:

A black tea note does sound very interesting to me. The bottle is to die for and this is the first time I hear about this brand. The leather accord is peaking my interest. I don’t really abide by the rules of you should wear this on this season so this one I’d wear all year round. Cheers from NJ, USA.

The presentation looks amazing! The note and break down on Redolessence’s channel has me very interested. Wonderful blog and I hope to try French Gallantry. Thank you

The black tea and leather is something new to me which is love to give a try. The bottle looks absolutely beautiful! I am from Indiana, USA

  • I adore Tea in scents. This version brings something new and I would love to try it. I used to drink black Tea with lemon for breakfast and that scent was so good. I’m from eu.

  • neal_buatti says:

Steven’s talked about how French Gallantry draws some similarities to Un Jardin Sur Le Nil by Hermes and that really piqued my interest. I live In Pennsylvania.

  • ConfusedTonberry says:

I love the overall look of the crimson bottle and packaging. The idea of the fragrance would bring me to a herbal garden with great cup of tea and I would definitely look forward to wearing this into the cold months to remind me of what I have to look forward to. And as a man that loves to cook I greatly enjoy more herbal and less spicy scents.

  • Ricardo Varela says:

What got me most interested in in the fragrance in the review by Steven was when he mentioned using a tomato leaf note in this fragrance I immediately caught myself in my imagination wondering what the fragrance and all its notes smell like

  • What I find the most interesting about Steven’s review is that State of Mind’s French Gallantry combines the freshness of herb garden ingredients like tomato leaf, basil, and various spices with a smoky leather accord, creating a unique twist on the aromatic genre. This blend of elements sounds intriguing and adds depth to the fragrance.

  • I enjoyed Steven describing French Gallantry as a aromatic fragrance. I do enjoy the tomato note in fragrances and love the scent of basil, oregano and thyme. A luscious garden sounds wonderful. Thanks for another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

  • Steven says it is an aromatic fragrance suited to cold weather that is not overly complicated, unlike many others he has smelled. I am in US

  • The herbal melange unmucked by spices or gourmands definitely sounds wonderful! Steven was so sad to not have discovered it earlier for warmer weather that I almost felt bad for him! But he has it now, so it’s all good. I live in the U.S.

  • What I found most interesting based on Steven’s video review is how he stated this is a holy grail fragrance for someone who enjoys herbal aromatic fragrances and one that is more suited for the summer time, dressed up or dressed down. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • The display and packaging of the product is so enticing! I adore Steven’s assurances that though the scent is very aromatic, there is still a “clear path” that is intended to be taken when smelled. Sounds to die for. Checking in from Raleigh, North Carolina!

  • Wow, this sounds so interesting. Black tea, tomato, basil! Cool I don’t own any from state of mind. I really would to own one
I am from US and a loyal follower of @Cafleurebon
    Thank you

  • When Steven says he was blown away you can take it to the bank. Never heard of this house but the notes sound very herbal and balsamic perhaps. Interesting that he says the composition goes in one direction without being all over the place this is it. I like the bottle and the atomizer looks first class. Would love to see this 3D beauty in my dresser. From Jacksonville, NC

  • Sounds such a complete , wholesome combination of notes and a name French Gallantry together with a rather original looking bottle draws me in. This is my cup of tea through and through. I live in the EU.

  • What a great review of State of Mind French Gallantry! I have Aesthetic Turbulence and tried butterfly mind. Since I like aromatic fragrances especially with basil, sage and tomato leaf it sounds great and black tea. gonna check it out

  • Thank you for the fantastic review of French Gallantry, Steven!
I adore the State of Mind line, and French Gallantry sounds like another incredible fragrance from them. I love aromatic fragrances especially with basil and most importantly tomato leaf! One of my favorite notes ever. I love the impression it gives of being in a garden and being surrounded by herbs. I like the idea of that saffron touch you mentioned that’s reminiscent of a smooth leather. Uncomplicated, fresh, and beautiful. You’re right Steven, this sounds awfully inviting and oh goodness I would love an invitation to this one.

  • This perfume sounds amazing! I absolutely love black tea notes in perfume. Tomato leaves are one of my favorite scents and you don’t see it often in perfumery. I love the imagery Steven presents in his review of being in an herb garden. I think this perfume would be a perfect fit for Thanksgiving if you’re in the States!

  • Hello from Florida, and thank you to Steven for the review!

Tomato leaf and sage are two of my favorite notes, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them interpreted through an animalic lens. French Gallantry sounds like such a unique scent — I’d love to give it a try!

  • If French Gallantry made such an impression on Steven, it must be gorgeous.
I’m curious about the tomato leaf, and how it plays here – I loved all the perfumes featuring this note, that I had the chance to sample/wear.
Thanks for the review and the draw, from Europe.

  • I had the opportunity of trying Aesthetic turbulence by The same brand and I could feel how they elevate the tea accord to his highest level. Then I can imagine how French Gallantry should Work.
Attending to the Steven’s review I can almosy feel this mix of tea and Leather and how elegant It is.
    I LOVE in Spain (EU)

  • What I found most interesting from the video was the discussion regarding the tomato leaf note. US

  • Sounds like a real and unique aromatic through and through, with the basil and tomato leaf, and then black tea and leather.
I was happy Steven said that it was still not too complicated, so an unapproachable kind of fragrance, and I also find the bottle absolutely gorgeous.
    From EU.

  • A smoky herb fragrance sounds like a year round scent to me too. The black tea and garden herb notes combined with the leather and wood notes make for an exceptionally well conceived fragrance. I would love to experience the tomato leaf note since I’ve yet to be impressed with any I’ve tried so far. Beautiful presentation as well! I’m in the US

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Steven talked about State of Mind French’s similarities to Un Jardin Sur Le Nil by Hermes, and I’m curious about that and how the heliotrope feels in that context. I am from EU

  • AromaDulce73 says:

Intrigued by Steven mentioning the tomato leaf note as being bright & organic. Don’t think I ever smelled a fragrance with this note. Sounds interesting, spicy and unique.

  • Steven’s love of tomato leaf warms me up to this just a tad bit. I generally think of tomato leaf as almost animalic, almost like BO. Akin to cumin. But he says this is fresh and aromatic, so I’m trying to picture how this could work. There are a lot of herbs in this fragrance, perhaps those cover/change the funk I get from tomato leaf.

  • perusegenesis says:

Thank you for this review, Steven! Black tea and smooth leather sounds excellent! A herby garden sounds intriguing, State of Mind releases seem really interesting. I’m currently located in Romania, Europe. <3

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

The bottle makes me think about Rooibos tea, it looks simply stunning.
This sounds like one of those scents one really must try, the notes are appealing (to me, at least), the bottling gorgeous, and Steven’s statement about being wow…well…says pretty much about French Gallantry.
    I live in Europe.

  • Januarililjan says:

Interesting. Michelyn and Steven are good, thanks. I usually do not like aromatics, but I do like tea. Hopefully this is good.

    I live in the EU.

  • If this perfume totally blew away Steven after so many scents sniffed, it must be something necessary to try!! Lush Garden Aromatic (basil, oregano, thyme) with the tomato leaf note that I adore! Not just the Hermes Steven mentions in the video, but an amazing “Tomato Leaves” candle by Loewe. I agree with Michelyn that it suits not just by summer time as Steven points out, but to be honest, ther is nothing more “summery” in our mediterranean countries than a tomato plant full of ripe fruits. I live in Spain, EU.

  • I liked the way Steven described the scent as an aromatic perfume with a lot of herbs (sage, basil, thyme, oregano) and various other ingredients, e.g. some sparkling citrus aura in the opening and leather accord in the drydown. And, the interesting tomato leaf note. The presentation also looks great. Greetings from EU.

  • Tea fragrances have become one of my recent obsessions, so seeing that note listed instantly caught my attention. I like the idea of an aromatic tea. Steven spoke about the tomato leaf and laurel notes giving it great character, and I can imagine them playing nicely with the tea. Despite him saying it might be best suited for warmer weather, as Michelyn commented, many of us work in climate controlled environments nowadays so most scents can be worn almost any time. I am so thankful for that as my mood for fragrance is constantly shifting. Sounds great and I would love to give it a try. Best of luck to all, I live in NC, USA.

I collect fragrances that remind me of a herb garden. I love aromatic notes like thyme and sage. I also like tomato leaf notes. I like the way that Steven said that French Gallantry is not overly complicated, yet it is smooth and timeless. The leather note at the end sounds amazing. Hmm. Maybe this might be a holy grail herbal fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • Aromatic goodness! Michelyn and Steven combined to really intrigue me with their words on this beauty. Packaging looks lovely, with the crimson bottle and the rare triangular form, hopefully the juice inside is just as lovely!

    I live in Sweden, EU.

  • Fantastic introduction by Michelyn and review by Steven.
State of Mind is a fragrance house that has been growing on me in the latest months.
French Gallantry is surely another hit. I love the tomato leaf note on it and the leather in the dry down.
I hope I get my nose on this beautiful aromatic fragrance, I am sure I am going to adore it.
    USA here.

  • Theenzoftheworld says:

You had me at black tea and tomato leaf! Huge fan of Rasasi Shuhrah and Russian Tea by Masque … picturing something of a hybrid of the two with this one. Steven’s assessment of it being warm weather appropriate is also heartening – with the Smokey leather dry down it seems like I could pull this off in all seasons. Would ship to Pittsburgh, PA if I win

  • MatthewKeilwitz says:

I don’t know how something this complexly herbal and out of left field could be described as smooth and “mass-appealing” (as Steven stated), but I’m certainly willing to find out.

  • State of Mind fragrances I discovered in Germany, they are available in i think the biggest local fragrance store. The salesperson told me about the history, how they were made , and the tea and coffee concept.
French Gallantry is like both Michelyn and Steven said green aromatic, herbal and leathery. The leather I can smell from the beginning, not just in the drydown, the tea accord is strong too. What stunned me a bit is how both contributors never brought up the bay leaf, it’s even stronger than the tomato leaves to me. The French herb garden picture also made me think of drinking Yunnan Black Tea there, walking and enjoying the view.
Out of the few State of Mind fragrances I’ve smelled Spontaneous Generosity i like the most. The salesman also told me that there one particular fragrance based on coffee, cognac and walnuts , but it’s not yet available in Germany, probably in late Spring. If you haven’t already , can you review it on Cafleurebon?
    Thank you so much

  • i have the chance to try this nrand and it’s quite underated in my opinion Even though it deserves more visibility. This sound like the perfect gentleman fragrance as said by in steve video plus I really enjoy the notes of tomato in fragrance. Greetings from Italy

  • I’m very intrigued by all of the herbal notes listed in Steven’s video, especially the sage, laurel, and basil. I’m very interested in the sparkling citrus that dries down into a nice leather accord. Tomato is such a fun scent to find added as well. This would be the perfect fragrance for going to farmers markets in summer, surrounded by other fresh aromatic notes, you would fit right in, but still manage to lead the show. The 7hour longevity and beautiful bottle are definitely a plus too!

  • I love the sound of the leather, tomato leaf, and tea notes in this fragrance! In particular I like the way Steven described the bright and organic quality of the tomato leaf, and how all the different notes come together to make a smooth and cohesive composition. Thank you for the opportunity to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

  • FragranceIsMe says:

Steven piqued my interest in this fragrance with his focus of the “tomato leaf” note. The remainder of notes listed, especially the black tea, have solidified my interest. Looking forward to getting my nose on this one.

  • Black tea fragrances are a favorite of mine, plus tomato leaf is a favorite note, and I love the idea of a tea fragrance that plays up the tea’s herbal qualities. Steven pointed out that French Gallantry has a surprising combination of sparkling citrus aura and strong leather base, which grabbed my attention. The lush garden qualities of this fragrance are very appealing too; Steven called out the aromatic thyme, without an overdose of spice. I appreciate a fragrance with a deliberate, precise concept, executed with a similarly mapped progression. (I love that ruby bottle as well.)

I’m in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • wallygator88 says:

THanks for the review Steven. I really like the aesthetics of this brand.

THis is such a fascinating fragrance. The use of tomato leaf with black tea is such a unique combination. The smooth leather accord (and maybe even saffron, with all it’s spicey sweetness), with thyme and laurel and the overdose of spice makes this sound so well designed.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

What I found most interesting about Steven’s video review of State of Mind French Galantry is just how very talented he is as a reviewer. He can really describe things perfectly to his audience. He is so well spoken and knowledgeable about fragrances. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni in collaboration with creative director Catherine Laskine-Balandina sounds like they have created a truly unique aromatic style fragrance with an amazing leather accord. I am from the USA.

  • Ok a black tea note and a leather accord, that caught my attention.
And the bottle is so gorgeous.
