Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient Review (Nathalie Feisthauer) 2020 + Delectable Desire Draw

Sous le Manteau Cuir d'Orient review

Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient, visual interpretation by Cristian©

Since the ancient times, the recipes of love potions were secretly preserved. Ancient formulas and centuries-old legends, they were meant to create desire that the other one could not resist. In the 19th century, these potions were recorded in pharmaceutical books and discovered in 2016 by Sous le Manteau”, Olivia Bransbourg, Creative Director, introduces her most recent foray into the world of perfumery. The recipient of Fragrance Foundation UK 2020 award for “Best Newcomer”, Sous le Manteau enlisted the genius of Master Perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer (Givaudan, Symrise, and now independent with her company LAB scent) to revive centuries’ old love potion recipes and reinterpret them for a contemporary audience. In other words, creating a new “old world” through scent!

My personal initial “coup de foudre” was Sous le Manteau Poudre Impériale, but the more I allowed myself to be entranced by these neo-elixirs, the less I filtered them through my preconceived binary of ‘like-dislike’, and the more profoundly I fell under the spell of each potion – of which Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient is my latest captor.  Cuir d’Orient is a warm and swathing philtre: an ambery and aromatic concoction teeming with opulent yet mellow spices. A powdery and comforting vanilla is the protagonist, supported by luscious resins such as benzoin and opoponax and what I perceive to be a delicious tonka bean facet. The fragrance opens with an alluring and subdued freshness coming from the bergamot. This introduction is brief and it momentarily makes room for the powdery floral notes of heliotrope and orris. The sweetness is discreet and it pulls you in a game of hide and seek, revealing itself in gentle waves of balmy reassurance, then hiding behind soft, tamed leather.

Sous le Manteau Cuir d'Orient

A trove of delectable textures, Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient is at once delicate and unabashed, silky and possessive. The suede accord adds a toned-down carnality to the fragrance without contributing with any sort of dissonance. In fact, it skillfully amplifies the “desire” factor. Out of the current five offerings from Sous le Manteau, I find Cuir d’Orient to be the warmest: torrid in an inside-out way, as if the sun spent its existence within human bodies – the skin being the only barrier keeping it contained. Still, it makes its presence known by way of trepidations, quivers and an acceleration of the rate of heartbeats and breathing.

The synesthetic image that appears in my mind when smelling Sous La Manteau Cuir d’Orient is strangely Sisyphean: a person sitting down in a suede armchair, carefully taking off their cashmere sweater. But this mundane task takes a mythological turn when the sweater doesn’t seem to come to an end. Piles and piles of infinite cashmere start to form hills, then mountains around our unlikely hero, until he is swallowed up in a sea of never-ending comfort.

Notes: Bergamot oil, Orris, Heliotrope, Suede, Patchouli oil, Ambrette, Vanilla Abs, Benzoin resin, Opoponax resin, Musk

Disclaimer: A sample set of the fragrances was gifted to me by Sous le Manteau, for my personal enjoyment. All opinions expressed are my own.

I think that’s what scent does: you no longer fall victim to the binary like-dislike.
Instead, you feel: invigorated, excited, sexy, comforted…challenged.

Scent asks you to be patient, explore. Sit with it for a while.
    Invite others, too.

    This composition sounds gorgeous.

    Have not tried this brand.

    Hi from Boston.

Christian’s description makes this sound like a dialogue between assertiveness and subtlety, between expression and repression of passion, between cool (bergamot) and warm (amber and suede). I have never tried a Sous le Manteau perfume, but this sounds like a great place to start. I am in the USA, in North Carolina.

  • My favorite part in this review of Sous le Manteau Cuir d’Orient by Cristian was this passage – “The synesthetic image that appears in my mind when smelling Sous La Manteau Cuir d’Orient is strangely Sisyphean: a person sitting down in a suede armchair, carefully taking off their cashmere sweater. But this mundane task takes a mythological turn when the sweater doesn’t seem to come to an end. Piles and piles of infinite cashmere start to form hills, then mountains around our unlikely hero, until he is swallowed up in a sea of never-ending comfort.” I guess this passage sums up pretty well the cozy nature of Cuir d’Orient. I have not tried this brand, yet. In USA.

I just love the sound of “piles and piles” of cashmere. I appreciate all of the textural references in the review (and the scent!). The spicy, resiny, sueded notes definitely are calling my name. I haven’t tried anything from this brand yet. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US (Boston)

  • The combination of bergamot and amber is famous from Shalimar and is always welcomed as a new twist on a classic theme. It truly is a love potion. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • First I love the paper cutout interpretation of the scent, and the idea of the sun residing in a person. I too love a cozy and comforting scent so I think this one sounds lovely. In maryland.

  • Courtenay Courier says:

I really enjoyed the description of the resins and the likening to ‘hide-and-seek’ notes is more than intriguing. I don’t have a favourite scent of theirs yet. USA.

Loved the review. Opening fresh, hide and seek, loads of camera.
Have never tried any from this house

  • Laurentiu says:

Beautiful pictures as always and a keen atention to details! I Iove leather and/or suede, and if I think of it, most of my collection is built around these two notes. Trying something new that features these ingredients, is always a good idea to me.
    Thank you! Europe

A beautiful description by Christian I am intrigued by the notes especially Patchouli oil, suede, opoponax resin. A house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. I didn’t have the chance yet to try any of Sous le Manteau fragrances, it would be awesome to start with this one! I absolutely love the image Cristian depicted of the infinite cashmere sweater that keeps on unfolding…and I am sure I would enjoy very much the perfume, with the opoponax, the orris, the ambrette, the vanilla…it really seems like a comforting and addictive scent! Greetings from Italy

  • Cristian’s review made me long for cashmere in a profound way. The part that really got me, (I had to read it several times)” I find Cuir d’Orient to be the warmest: torrid in an inside-out way, as if the sun spent its existence within human bodies – the skin being the only barrier keeping it contained. Still, it makes its presence known by way of trepidations, quivers, and an acceleration of the rate of heartbeats and breathing.”
As always the art is breathtaking.

  • I haven’t tried anything yet from this fragrance house, but I’ve heard of them and was always interested in trying their releases when I read about them. I like ambery and aromatic fragrances and this one also has spices, citrus, floralness, and it’s resinous: I think that I would like this fragrance. Also, this fragrance house seems like they release high-quality fragrances, so I hope to try, at least, some of their releases. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Trinity33 says:

Cuir d’Orient sounds like a luxurious cashmere throw. The warmly spiced amber and the powdery florals of orris and heliotrope seem so comforting yet elegant. I love Christian’s kirie piece inspired by the fragrance. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • This is a fragrance that really seems to embody the smooth texture of silk or soft cashmere through its notes of orris, heliotrope, suede, and musks. I haven’t tried any of the fragrances from the line, but I am definitely intrigued. In the USA.

  • Valentina says:

Cristian had me when he talked about warmth and sun… I need it to feel my pores and soul right now! I live in Romania

  • I loved the review and enjoyed the description as you can feel the textures of the perfume! The spicy, resiny, sueded notes are amazing and his image of the piles of infinite cashmere and inside-out way of being torrid are so vivid. I have never tried any from this house but very interested in the neo-elixirs or potions as Cristian names them. I live in Spain, EU.

  • joshuabrian says:

I want to have the chance to smell this fragrance just from the description, especially the part where it says it is silky and possessive. The one that i enjoyed smelling the most on someone else (and the only one i happened to smell) is poudre imperiale.I live in Greece

  • Vanilla, resins, suede and powdery notes…sounds like a dream! (Even though the image of the neverending sweater, I must confess, troubled me more than I could have imagined.
Cuir d’Orient really does sound like a comforting, luxurious yet soft fragrance which envelops and pampers you to no end and I would love to try it.

  • Cristian’s review of Cuir d’Orient is described in beautiful words “an ambery and aromatic concoction teeming with opulent yet mellow spices. A powdery and comforting vanilla is the protagonist, supported by luscious resins such as benzoin and opoponax and what I perceive to be a delicious tonka bean facet. ” This fragrance sounds so enchanting, I would love to try it. I have tried poudre impériale, also a beautiful scent. USA

  • Julesinrose says:

First want to say that the piece of artwork is simply gorgeous. And what sparks my interest scent-wise is that the notes list is filled with many of my favorites. And who wouldn’t want to wear “a trove of delectable textures?” I have not tried any Sous le Manteau perfumes. May that be remedied! In the US

  • wandering_nose says:

I have been seduced with the mental and visual picture Cristian painted of the fragrance. His visual representaton of Cuir d’orient and his kirie are delightful, and the composition itself sounds extraordinary. Inviting, powdery, cozy and comforting – this is my perfect fragrant hug. Haven’t had the chance to try Sous Le Manteau creations as of yet, but their philosophy of reviving old love potion recipes by reinterpreting them with a modern touch appeals to me a lot. Based in Ireland, EU

  • The description of the suede and the leather and the fragrance development captured my attention. US

  • The review makes this fragrance sound so cozy and plush. The cashmere analogy really resonated with me! I love resins and think this one is a good match for me. I haven’t tried anything from this house before, so I don’t have a favorite yet. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • I love the idea of light and warmth moving from our core to the outside. I haven’t tried any of Sous le Manteau’s perfumes, but from the descriptions I am intrigued by Poudre impériale. I live in the US..

  • NickKnack says:

The imagery that this guy puts out is awesome – I really enjoy how Cristian relays the image in his mind to give the fragrance a tangible feel. In this example the idea of infinite hills of sweaters and a backdrop of suede and sophistication
    NY USA

  • I like the idea of reinterpreting old philtre recipes, and the image of a person endlessly removing their sweater is very inspired and helpful. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying any Sous Le Manteau scents yet. (USA)

  • As always, a great review of a scent that wasn’t on my radar. The visual interpretation of the scent was my favorite part! Those little yellow blossoms and those dark, sticky vanilla pods are lovely. I’m in the US and this house is new to me…for now. Thank you for the images and review!

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparks my interest on Cristian’s review of Cuir d’Orient is how the note breakdown and expertly detailed review of this fragrance sounds perfect. An oriental, resinous, and ambery masterpiece. Based on this review my favorite Sous le Manteau perfume would probably be Cuir d’Orient. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Martin Ford says:

As well as Cuir d’Orient obviously.

  • doveskylark says:

Cuir d’Orient sounds so comforting, yet perhaps with a touch of carnality from the leather notes. The bergamot note, along with the tonka, orris, and heliotrope, sounds opulent and luscious. Cristian’s review has pulled me in. And I love that Sous le Manteau revives formulas of ancient potions. I haven’t tried anything from this house.
    I live in the USA.
